- gannondork, on 03/11/2008, -4/+83So Hillary is two faced and has no morals? In other news the sky is blue.
- dBass, on 03/11/2008, -20/+85This is "inaccurate", as a member of the Walmart team, she was actually very vocal about how great Walmart was and how they earned their big profits.
- haobaba1, on 03/11/2008, -4/+59Talk about typical washington double speak.
- missingnoh4x, on 03/11/2008, -3/+43Obligatory "***** Hillary/Walmart/the RIAA" comment.
- kanvas, on 03/11/2008, -8/+45Can we just post an article with the headline "Clinton is a horrible bitch" and be done with it? My head may explode if I keep seeing her nasty grin on the front page.
- Xanrez, on 03/11/2008, -5/+22The significance of this story in a nutshell: Pennsylvania is the last "big state" left in the primary. Clinton is heavily favored to win that state. Pennsylvania is heavily populated by unions and union supporters. The news needs to be spread that Clinton is anti-union as proven by her Wal-Mart days so that the voters of Pennsylvania wake up and see through Clinton's lies.
- greenlight2001, on 03/11/2008, -2/+18Over your head.
- cocacolakid301, on 03/11/2008, -8/+22Unions began because employers were treating their workers horribly - no breaks, 12-16 hour days, little pay, no raises, and if you complained or were ever late you were fired on the spot. Not to mention things like the management of the Ford Motor Company dropping metal car parts off rooftops to land on the heads of their employees who were stagging a walkout. Unions put an end to that garbage. It's a fascinating history to read up on.
Unions obviously have their problems, but the benefits typically outweigh them - higher pay, job protection, retirement benefits, etc. - chrissku, on 03/11/2008, -3/+15Maybe Hillary is planning on explaining this and releasing her taxes on the same day she concedes the race to Obama. Hopefully that day is soon.
- pevensen, on 03/11/2008, -6/+18I can't tell if this is supposed to be a negative or positive.
- maley, on 03/11/2008, -2/+14Most people that blast Wal-Mart do so blindly. They don't k now that their board members are paid VERY low for being the biggest corporation in the world. They could be making hundreds of millions but they don't because they pass the cost on to consumers. As far as Unions go, Wal-Mart does a pretty good job of paying their employees at least as far as other stores that they're similar too ie) Target (I work there). At the end of the day it comes down to the consumers. You shop there, you want the low prices. If you dugg this then don't shop @ Wal-Mart, ever.
- FLUX, on 03/11/2008, -7/+16Want to see what unions are good for , look at our auto industry and school teachers :the auto industry is in shambles because they are paying the man who sweeps the floor 40 grand a year and cant fire the idiot who does the crappy work on your car , as for school teachers union look at the money we dump into schools and johnny cant read and every year we fall further behind the rest of the world . Unions are ruining this country they had a time and place many years ago, now they are bloated self serving bureaucracies
- Midtowner, on 03/11/2008, -4/+13I'm a McCain supporter, but I'd rather have Obama than Clinton. That said, this article is irrelevant. This stuff is 16 years old! There are a lot more recent things in Clinton's past which are actually relevant to her qualifications and character. This is not one of those things. She was on the Board of Directors for Wal-Mart. When you're on the Board, your loyalty is to the shareholders, not the employees, most certainly not the unions. If she had abused her position on the Board in order to give unions undue influence in the corporate decision making process, only then would I be worried.
- coyote1284, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9the average digger is well aware of what the Republican party is responsible for and not, and what the Democratic party let the Republican party get away with. Your not-so moderate tirade is not a wake-up, just the same "OMG, REUBLICANS ARE EVIL' drivel we've heard for the past 7 years.
- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -8/+16Don't worry about the copyright, sweetie. Why would we want to copy any of your lies and propaganda?
And if you think that Democrats are so much better than Republicans, you need get out of your dorm room or parents' basement more often. They both suck. But, you wouldn't know that if you just listen to DailyKos, know what I mean tough guy? - orlandorays, on 03/11/2008, -3/+11As always, she only cares when she wants power.
- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -4/+12oh noes, evil walmart
- chrissku, on 03/11/2008, -1/+8Yea I realize now that I misread what was written. My fault.
- logicalnoise, on 03/11/2008, -7/+14HUCK FILLARY!
- xelerated, on 03/11/2008, -20/+27Unions are bad. bad for everyone involved. if people want to make a point to management without GIVING away money for nothing, there are other ways..... Unions suck... infact when possible I avoid buying from companies that have unions.
- insomniac8400, on 03/11/2008, -13/+19Who cares Hillary is a monster and unions ruin companies.
- skdontya, on 03/11/2008, -1/+7Costco has a great reputation on Wall Street, among customers, and its workers--union and non-union alike. Treating workers well and low prices aren't mutually exclusive.
- deadcrickets, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6Both sides. Unions can prevent exploitation but they also encourage businesses to outsource or to move their factories to low paying countries. This has happened over and over.
- dbalaski, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6Auto Industy ? Maybe -- more of the mfg giving us crap designs..
Teachers ? No -- we ask them to do more and more -- but lets face it.
Teaching kids sometimes is like leading a horse to water --- try as hard as you want , only the horse will decide when he/she wants to drink it.
Personally: I think a lot of kids are more characteristic of the statement made in the movie Idiocracy -- see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upyewL0oaWA
you'll understand my point - NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6You presumably know nothing about unions, but you are right, a union will balance a profit margin out quick, well actually only when it is positive margin to start.
Have you been in a union shop? Back when there were no windows and children working they prevented exploitation, but all they do now is exploit. - lamprey187, on 03/11/2008, -4/+9@ kn3x
don't blame unions for corporate greed.
"...at the expense of poorer workers abroad. but lemme guess, they dont count as human beings as much as unionized Americans, amirite?"
No you are wrong, that would be how corporations like Walmart buy inferior goods made in sweatshops and then wrap the American flag around it. Are you just ignorant ???? - kn3x, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6"sending jobs overseas"
looks like someone failed economics 101 - cyclades, on 03/11/2008, -3/+8She's a self serving hypocrite.
- serif69, on 03/11/2008, -4/+9How the hell did this make the front page? From over a month ago:
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Hillary_Remained ... - acdcfanbill, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4That would be Fletch Lives. :)
- jgzman, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5Reading Comprehension is a wonderful thing. I invite you to try it sometime.
- alexology, on 03/11/2008, -11/+15Its not a monopoly. Simply put, its just a way for a group to organize to represent their interests. Companies have their representatives, their workers should too.
- rhbama13, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5Wow chill out.
- ftx437, on 03/11/2008, -6/+10Unions are a problem in this country i believe, they make it so a company has to pay a guy 20/hr to sweep the floor, or make a school keep a teacher that is incompetent, or not even let you the parents choose where your kids goto school (vouchers). Company's have had to close plants down because they could afford the pay that the workers demand and then the unions throw a fit because there closing the plant down. I've actualy turned down a job (granted it was a very well paying job) because if i took it i would have been forced to join there union and pay "dues" no thanks. There out dated.
Also there was a article/story (sorry i can't find the link right this second and forgive me if i am wrong) about how this company wanted to build a building with some kind of piping in it that would reduce water waste and the plumbers union in the area were aginst it becasue they would have less work to do there. (i.e. repairs) - kn3x, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5....as opposed to who?
- 7goats, on 03/11/2008, -2/+6How can HRC defend being on Wal-Mart's Board if she did nothing to protect the rights of the workers? Aside from the anti-union news, we all knew that Wal-Mart had horrific hiring practices that forced workers to not work more than 30 hours so that they wouldn't be counted as full time workers eligible for benefits. This is a HUGE indicator of how she is unqualified to lead. She cannot seem to say no to power. She must be at the table, but then she squanders that position on inaction. She could have bullied them to address these labor issues, and maybe the thousands of other companies who took a page form the Wal-Mart playbook would not have been able to instill similar working conditions on it's workers.
FTA: Heck, she's proud of it "I'm always proud of Wal-Mart and what we do and the way we do it better than anybody else," says HRC. - Raxem, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5Yawn. Her not supporting unions when she was on the wal-mart board has been on the front page of digg how many times?
- Landlocked, on 03/11/2008, -2/+6Also noteworthy, Obama's wife runs a juice company that is a major Wal-Mart supplier. Left or right, everybody has ties to whatever's making money.
- dbalaski, on 03/11/2008, -3/+7Excuse me -- Not All unions are bad - A working living wage and medical benefit is not much for an employee to ask for, which is why unions were born in the first place.
Some offer great benefits to the employers as well as the customers.
Take for instance: IBEW --International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
This union functions as a guild hall. This union is what allowed my father to own/run a small industrial electrical contracting firm .
He worked in the field with his men, and when he needed more men, he called the union and hired them for a short term from the union "bench".
When things were slow, he would be the only worker.
Of course their rates were higher than the non-unionized counterparts. But they were highly skilled electricians willing to go thru this Guild Rotation. And it allowed small contractors the ability to survive lean times instead of always fighting cut-throat for any type of job . (Industrial electrical work is very different from Residential and Commercial.) - skipdog172, on 03/11/2008, -4/+8HOORAY FOR MORE IGNORANT WAL-MART HATE! THOSE UNIONS SURE DID GREAT THINGS FOR GM! IN FACT THE UNIONS ARE WORKING SO GREAT FOR GM THEY OFFERED 80K TO ALL UNION WORKERS JUST SO THEY CAN HIRE OTHERS WHO WOULD GET PAY COMPARABLE TO ANY OTHER SKILL-LESS JOB!
I'm not a Hillary supporter. I just hate senseless wal-mart hate that makes no sense to any reasonable person. Why wal-mart employees deserve to be overpaid is beyond me. Seriously, someone explain why they believe wal-mart employees deserve to make far more than any other kind of similar job. If you have no skills, you work at walmart and get paid enough to have a house, car, and food on the table. Why do we need to reward a lack of education and lack of desire to get educated? It just doesn't make any sense to me that people WANT wal-mart unionized so that we would all pay higher prices and so young kids today can grow up knowing "I don't have to obtain any job skills. I can work at wal-mart and be set!" - cnorris1, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4I agree but Johnny cant read because kids/parents dont care about education
- wedgemartin, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Highly skilled sure. Motivated to work? Possibly. Going home at 1 minute till 5pm with a job unfinished? Probably.
What about the small companies that want to compete in areas in fields that are dominated by union mobsters.. Forced to sign union agreements and spend ridiculous amounts of money for union 'fees' just to try to compete, getting squashed in the process because they can't afford it. - Eivo, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rezko.jpg
lol, wut? - justinx0r, on 03/11/2008, -3/+6I think the average Wal-Mart wage is $9.00 or $9.25 which is around $3 more than the minimum wage. They employ people that otherwise would not have a job.
- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -3/+6If you lived in a union town, you would probably despise unions (unless you are part of their machine). They are corrupt, violent organizations. Ever try to cross a picket line? Unions have killed people over that. And how they "visit" people at their homes to intimidate them into making "the right decisions".
I've worked in 4 union shops. There were some good people in all of them, but there were also a hell of a lot more harassing, lazy, and thieving people the union protected that would have been out on their ass anywhere else.
The worst were unionized Gov't workers. Can't fire them, can't get rid of their obsolete jobs. When people call for nationalized healthcare and say it will be cheaper, I have to laugh. Unions (and politicians) will make sure that the costs only go one way - up. - aliengoods, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3It's takes a big man to admit he's wrong. I am not a big man.
Bonus points if you can name the movie. - thorstrongstone, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3I think that it is funny that people who abhor unions have no idea how much they owe to them; how thankful they should be.
Five day work week? Thanks unions. Labor laws? Thanks unions. CHILD labor laws? Thanks unions.
Yes, the heads of the A.F.L.C.I.O may be bastards, but they have not run a true union in 40 years, so I hardly think one can gauge unions on the actions of a major. No, one must know what unions are about before they can judge.
And you know what, ***** all of you who bash unions, and the workers they represent. If you want to be exploited, fine, but stay the ***** out of the lives of the workers who join such groups because they are sick of being dicked around by rich scumbags who THINK they know what is best for everyone.....especially those they pay eight dollars an hour.
And you know what is really funny? Most of the time, people join unions because they simply want to earn a wage that will allow them to live, yet you badmouth them. You say that the are counter-productive. Yeah, I would say that getting 13 more cents an hour, and maybe some health benefits is REALLY counter-productive. Give me a ***** break.
Just because you eat well does not mean that everyone else does.
Anyway, Hillary is a *****, and that is one of the major reasons why she will not be winning this primary. - inactive, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4Have any of you ever experienced an organizing drive? Dirty, nasty and I don't mean the company's tactics. The company will tell you that you can kiss raises goodbye due to the higher costs they bear. But the union is quite different. It's so nice to have "visits" from the "friendly" organizers.
When the organizers come to "visit" (i.e. threaten), it's a good idea to keep a gun handy. - OralCavity, on 03/11/2008, -2/+5i'm sure it's that easy for everyone.
- davidrools, on 03/11/2008, -3/+6I think it's both. Hillary gets a +1 for fighting to get women promoted. -1 for failing at that, since women still have an incredibly tough time doing that at WalMart. Also a -10 for letting the notoriously anti-union company remain (and even get worse at) crushing unionization. This is particularly negative because she relied on a strong base of blue collar and union supporters, especially in Ohio. So overall negative.
