Obama has put letters and ads specifically targeted towards gay groups in gay newspapers, expressing support for their views and positions. These specific ads and letters may be used by conservatives to target him, but he stands by his principles and he stands by the gay community - even if he doesn't support gay marriage, but instead civil unions.
