- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -26/+395I like the 2009 Bill much better than the 2008 Bill.
Key part of quote:
"He has reached across, and it takes two to tango. I find it amazing that Republicans, who doubled the debt of the country in eight years and produced no new jobs doing it — gave us an economic record that is totally bereft of any productive result — are now criticizing him for spending money. … This stimulus is our bridge over troubled waters. He did the right thing.” - thenekkidtruth, on 02/17/2009, -23/+245All weekend GOP talking heads were telling us about what little commitment Barack Obama had to bipartisanship. Since Barack literally has ALREADY spent more time earnestly reaching across the aisle than Bush did in 8 years, every one of 'em's been smokin' it. What can we expect next? That they're gonna put 'Honesty' in the official Republican platform in the hope that a few more suckers might believe it ?
From Balloon Juice: "I really don’t understand how bipartisanship is ever going to work when one of the parties is insane. Imagine trying to negotiate an agreement on dinner plans with your date, and you suggest Italian and she states her preference would be a meal of tire rims and anthrax. If you can figure out a way to split the difference there and find a meal you will both enjoy, you can probably figure out how bipartisanship is going to work the next few years." - royceguy, on 02/17/2009, -23/+224bipartisanship means the republicans get everything they want, just like when bush was president.
funny thing is they really believe that. - Zippo, on 02/17/2009, -17/+134For god sake, GOP, quit your complaining and start helping. Clearly your tactics didn't work (in fact, they did the opposite)... so maybe you could get off your asses and help try and fix the country - as opposed to just complaining.
- moose26, on 02/17/2009, -18/+116For the record, I always liked Clinton and overall thought he did a good job during his two terms as President.
- doubleoh7, on 02/17/2009, -5/+92Thank you. Your comment has been added to your record.
- JinandJuice, on 02/17/2009, -21/+106I had forgotten how presidents' speeches actually meant something.
- Beatmiser, on 02/17/2009, -8/+92The saddest thing in all of this is that Republicans are essentially hoping that the stimulus utterly fails and plunges us into a true depression in order to further their political agenda. I mean really, how ***** up is that?
- cataractmoon, on 02/17/2009, -20/+90I do think Obama will continue pushing liberal, moderate, and conservative ideas. Obama will create partisanship when he pursues a policy that is perhaps more moderate and conservative compared to his party. When this happen, true bipartisanship will begin to happen, but how can bipartisanship happen on a 787 + billion dollar package? That kind of money is bold and frightening.
Give Obama time. He is a long-term thinker, and the media is so short-termed!
And, Clinton is spot on! Maybe his criticism will wake up some Republicans. Maybe it won't. Regardless, I don't prefer former Presidents speaking about current Presidents, but I think Clinton felt he needed to considering that Dick Cheney trounced all over Obama's plan. Mr. Cheney, go fishing and leave the economy to a Democrat and a President! - ophello, on 02/17/2009, -11/+65Is it ok that I sort of miss Bill a little?
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -26/+75The people voted against the Republicans and their short sighted values in the last election. It's time for them to shutup.
- pintomp3, on 02/17/2009, -1/+486 out of the 8 Bush years, Republicans controlled all three branches. The last two, Democrats had a slim majority in one branch and couldn't override a Bush veto.
- misterrock, on 02/17/2009, -6/+52can you read?
***** seriously, this line:
Bill Clinton D 1997-2001 65.6% 57.4% 0.42 -8.2%
George W. Bush R 2001-2005 57.4% 64.3% 1.15 +6.9%
George W. Bush R 2005-2009 64.3% 68.2% projection +3.9% projection
the last item in there is percent change in debt/GDP.
furthermore, clinton was referring to public debt, which is the gross debt less the amount the government owes itself. this did double during bush's two terms.
honestly, get a grip on reality. the ***** you link to doesn't even support your claims. - ictoan, on 02/17/2009, -8/+48What are you talking about?
Clinton was the only president in recent years to actually balance our national spending.
Just look at the wiki site that you provided to check the facts. - aFoxy21, on 02/17/2009, -8/+41It's nice to see Bill back, doing what he does best -- explaining complex problems in easy to understand language, without ever seeming to dumb it down. I don't mind the way President Obama speaks, but I know my mom (an on-the-fence Conservative) can't always follow him. She loved Bill Clinton & I think hearing from him occasionally over the next 4 years will make her more comfortable with Obama's message -- and maybe that'll get her to vote for him next time!
- aptanalogy, on 02/17/2009, -3/+36Not to mention that the increase in debt between 1978 and 2005 during Republican administrations was 36.4%; it was 4.2% under Democrats. Reagan and the two Bushes apparently spent just like good fiscal conserv- I mean drunken sailors.
- Foot56, on 02/17/2009, -5/+37So in the past eight years every time a democrat wanted a say in legislation they were shut out, if they voted for a bill they thought was wrong “they hate America.” Republicans spend 1.5 trillion over 6 years on tax cuts that lost jobs helped make our economy go further in a downward spiral. They had no problem spending 2.5+ trillion on wars but when we want to spend it back here in the United States “It’s wasteful spending.” Obama went over to Capitol Hill and talked with House and Senate Republicans and wanted to hear what they said. Kind of funny you did not hear of a plan from Republicans, however you just heard them run their mouths “Spending NO NO.” “ We did not get a say!” If you can prove to me this was not a political stunt praying it fails so in 2012 they can pick up more seats. Then can say “Hey we voted NO” You tell me tell me if that is American, rather than having a plan of their own and working in bipartisan like Obama wanted.
- Countess666, on 02/17/2009, -0/+29yes it funny to see how they can accept the new realities and make the best of them and work with them....
i know a party that starts with a R that could learn a big lesson from these 2. - inactive, on 02/17/2009, -14/+43Clinton kicking it old school. Awesome.
Anyway, I'm just glad we finally have someone competent in the White House. Let the Republicans have their echo-chamber. They can whine and scream their way all the way to 2010, when they'll lose what little power they have left in Congress. - TheTaoOfBill, on 02/17/2009, -9/+37Are you serious? The whole stimulus bill was change.
We changed from wreckless spending on things like war that create no new jobs nor does it improve the life of Americans to spending directly on Americans. Soon we will be out of the war and our war costs will go down further and there will be more money to spend to better America.
Spending money to benefit Americans is the change. And it's a very welcome change. - pixelate, on 02/17/2009, -1/+28More optic, less wind, OK?
- pintomp3, on 02/17/2009, -4/+31The GOP needs to admit that trickle-down economics don't work.
- wafla, on 02/17/2009, -6/+32Yes, Clinton was one of our best, regardless of the political hackjobs done on him during his term, and regardless of his private relations.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 02/17/2009, -7/+33g00dETH3R voted for George W. Bush in 2004. Therefore you can ignore anything he says about politics.
- magamiako, on 02/17/2009, -9/+34Republicans: YOUR ***** DIDN'T WORK FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS. SHUT THE ***** UP. You failed, not only did you fail, but you failed so ***** epically hard that you have created a new low by which to benchmark failure. Just when we thought things couldn't possibly get any worse you ***** went and made it much, much worse.
- kukurio, on 02/17/2009, -7/+32I guess you didn't notice the fact that 40% of the bill was comprised of tax breaks, which the Democrats don't believe in. The fact is, House Republicans took Obama's concessions and voted against the bill anyway. When the House and Senate versions needed to be reconciled, there was no reason for House Republicans to get a seat at the table, because they had already made it clear that they weren't going to vote for a bill that wasn't 100% of what they wanted.
- gegan249, on 02/17/2009, -8/+32I'm an ex-repubican disgusted with their party. I have never seen an organized group of professionals so dead-set on destroying a president just to get their party back in power. I don't care if you don't vote DEMOCRAT, just don't vote REPUBICAN. (yes. re-pubic-can)
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -8/+31I think Clinton put in words exactly what I think about GOP and the Stimulus Package.
Is there anything wrong with that? Am I so wrong about something, here? I am an intelligent guy, I usually know when someone is right (I'm not a "fanboy" of anyone, except for intelligent people who know how to do their job). And I firmly believe he is right on this, because it's what I've been thinking all along - but then there's tons of people saying tax cuts is the way to go, and that Obama is going to ruin the economy, even intentionally because he's almost like the devil, and treating me like I'm the ignorant.
My question to you out there thinking that way, is.... are you sure? Really sure? - ThsGuyRightHere, on 02/17/2009, -1/+23It actually makes a lot of sense. Read it again, a little bit slower this time.
- novenator, on 02/17/2009, -7/+25I feel your pain goodeth3r, but respectfully disagree. I think Obama has shown extraordinary resilience to the washington machine.
- misterrock, on 02/17/2009, -8/+26boo ***** hoo. republicans proved themselves completely unwilling to work with democrats on this.
when you can't win policy debate, you argue about the process. - MusicMagi, on 02/17/2009, -4/+21It's true, for all the idiots that called everyone a terrorist and 'un-america' that was against the war are now hoping our president and our country will fail just so they can say 'I told you so' That's about as close to treason as it gets. IF anyone is unamerican or a terrorist it's people like rush rimblabla that wants obama to fail.
- wafla, on 02/17/2009, -4/+21"you'll find that the majority of Congress was Democrat"
Oops twinklyJesus, your error has been noted! Please refactor your conclusions to incorporate the correct data. You don't want to be accused of spreading misinformation. - captainglobal, on 02/17/2009, -7/+24Sorry, but "GOP tactics" gave us the war in Iraq. Your effort at revisionist history would be comical if not for all the lives that have been lost.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -2/+19OH really? Sorry to come in here like this, but... he pretty much mirrored what the GOP has been thinking and still thinks... in pretty much almost everything he said and did... And they wanted to keep doing the same with McCain, and they sound like Bush whenever they talk still today...
Why are you defending the GOP so passionately? I don't get it, I'm sorry. So you're saying Bush was just a mistake and the GOP is a little better than that? Ok. So you're saying tax cuts didn't work... because Bush did them, and not someone else? What else are you going to say to defend them? I'm curious... - bcarl314, on 02/17/2009, -4/+19GOP tactics, you know the "Tax cuts, Tax cuts, no regulation, screw the people, help the rich" mantra we've been hearing for the last 8 years, directly resulted in the current situation.
Tickle down is a failed policy - PERIOD - scottk59, on 02/17/2009, -1/+16We have found him! The Worst Investor Ever! His powers of false attribution know no bounds.
How are those shares of Enron you bought doing, BTW? - macfan93, on 02/17/2009, -5/+20Even when Galileo showed the church that an orange and a grape fall at the same speed, they still did not believe that all objects fall at the same speed. Even when obama's plan starts to work, republicans will still criticize it.
- alecks, on 02/17/2009, -1/+15And when YOUR stuff backfired under Bush, did you finally blame yourself?
- VanillaBabies, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1410 Trillion + 800 Million = 30 Trillion? How does that work exactly?
Seriously though, any point you could have made was instantly void when you typed "you liberals". Which is too bad because you raised a very important but often ignored point that while Obama does seem to at least be trying to congressional leadership, Pelosi especially, seems hell-bent on her way or the highway. It is a horrible way to lead, and a miserable message to send to the American public.
Another opportunity wasted for intelligent discourse in the name of name-calling and unnecessary bashing. But i do congratulate you, your trolling is the poster child of why a path of bi-partisanship is doomed. As long we we view eachother as that other group that could never have any common goals or mutual interests nothing will be accomplished. - misterrock, on 02/17/2009, -2/+16it's too ***** late for the GOP to disown Bush. You supported him. Own up to it.
if the GOP can't own that mistake, how can we trust them to run the country? - seltaeb4, on 02/17/2009, -2/+15He's only been in office for 3 weeks. Cut the guy some slack.
- BionicPimp, on 02/17/2009, -4/+17Do you ever watch ER? Have you ever seen when they wheel in an emergency room patient who is dying and the main doctor will say "20cc's of {insert magical drug name here}" and there's always some intern or nurse that will say "...but that will cause high blood pressure!!!" ( or some other problem. premature baldness. erectile dysfunction. etc. ). The main doctor always responds, " but at least the patient will live!"
unfortunately, this is digg, so I'll spell it out. the US economy is the the guy dying. the magical drug is the stimulus package. If we don't stop it from dying *now* it won't matter if it *hurts* later - digg4peace, on 02/17/2009, -3/+16It depends on which president you are speaking of. The one we have now is actually trying to help you. imagine that.
- jiggawatt, on 02/17/2009, -1/+14Bipartisanship to the Republicans/Conservatives right now means giving in to their ideology! That's what Obama has been saying, that's why he made the joking comment that "he won". There have been concessions in this bill to republican ideals. Republican ideas have been taken into account and included, so this whole drama of the republicans crying "fake bipartisanship" is just a ruse and really shows how insane they are acting and what their strategies are. Bush never gave us any real bipartisanship, and quite the opposite, the dems either went along with the republicans, or they hated America. It was the whole "with us or against us" mentality of the Bush admin that those of us who tried to reason with you all had to put up with for so long. Lucky for them the dems aren't acting the same way or using the same asinine scare tactics. So what I really want to say is, yes this is much better bipartisanship than we've had in a long time, and I hope it continues, but SHUT THE F*CK UP and deal with the fact that you wont get your way anymore!
- OriginalLucid1, on 02/17/2009, -3/+15Also wrong. High energy prices and the collapse of the credit market sunk the economy.
- jakeoooh, on 02/17/2009, -0/+12bank reforms
- jiggawatt, on 02/17/2009, -3/+15It does matter when you're going to espouse self-righteousness. The past is taken into account when people are scrutinizing your judgment. If they are so right now, why in the hell were they so wrong for 8 years? They being right is highly argueable. Honestly, where are their better solutions other than "tax cuts", because I've yet to talk to a single economist, and I know a few, who think Tax Cuts will have any long term sustainable benefit. And they got some tax cuts!
What this bill needs to coincide with it is heavy reform in many sectors and industry oversight. Otherwise we're throwing money into a bad system that got us where we're at. It's gonna hurt, but it's time to yank some teeth and get things back into alignment. Again, Tax Cuts are your answer? No. - wejmahtin, on 02/17/2009, -3/+14If you held him upside down, a mountain of lobbyists wouldn't fall out of his pockets, for one thing.
- misterrock, on 02/17/2009, -2/+13the stock market is reacting to ***** that's happening in other parts of the world today.
Also, I'm glad we don't have people in charge who formulate long-term policy based on how well it will help a single day's trading. -
