- BBE1965, on 05/20/2009, -4/+76The new meme I see in the media is that questioning the CIA's veracity is tantamount to treason and thus terribly unpatriotic. Disclosures like this help drive home the truth: the CIA lies out of it's metaphorical ass and always has. They are part of the problem. All hail Senator Bob Graham's meticulous daily notebook record keeping.
- Lederhosed, on 05/20/2009, -4/+53The CIA's word is definitely no more trustworthy than that of any politician.
- TAwtry, on 05/20/2009, -3/+42Outstanding, investigative journalism by placing all the facts regarding unwarranted surveillance (FISA – Patriot Act) in such a presentable, informative style.
Great Posting! - novenator, on 05/20/2009, -4/+38Seconded. The CIA will continue to try and distort the truth to cover their own asses. What we need is for a brave person inside to leak information on this, like a modern day Deep Throat.
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -3/+32wow! This is big news!
- angeladtao, on 05/20/2009, -6/+33President Obama finally stepped up to the plate and gave a news conference to express his confidence in Nancy Pelosi's leadership and judgment. It was about time that he weighed in on this switcheroo by the Republicans. This news makes it even more certain that the Repubs are drawing the noose tighter and tighter around their own necks. How can they be so stupid as to pursue someone who, when confronted about the veracity of her claims vs. the CIA's record-keeping, says, "Bring it on!". It boggles the mind, but then most of what the Reps do these days boggles my mind. Jeezzz...
- Pash1994, on 05/20/2009, -3/+27His meticulous record keeping is off the charts!
From "The Rachel Maddow Show," May 15, 2009
"Former Senator Bob Graham's (admittedly odd) penchant for writing everything he does in little notebooks may come in handy for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi."
Senator Bob Graham's Little Red Notebooks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBUIe0pUrr8 - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -6/+30I knew this was going to back- fire on the republicans. I love it when they hang themselves with their own rope. The CIA's word isn't worth a damn, nor is Bush's, Cheney's or anyone that was an "insider" of that tainted administration.
The GOP should apologize to Speaker Pelosi. They got down right ugly, and some of the comments by political hacks were sexist (I don't believe in playing that card at the drop of a hat)- however, they were going on about her "botoxed" face, her clothing- and then calling for her to resign etc. This whole thing is related to the Bush administration covering it's ass. It's's time for a full "throated" investigation (to borrow one of nov's words), and for Bush, Cheney, Rice, and the rest of these people to be held accountable for their actions (ie "alleged" crimes)! - mgraham80, on 05/20/2009, -2/+23Geeze people, it's not like the CIA has a history of deceiving Congress.
...
Oh wait, they do, you say? Well, it's not like we can show the CIA under Bush ever deceived, say, the Secretary of State in its own administration.
...
Oh wait, they lied to SOS Powell prior to his much-panned UN appearance, you say?
...
Err. Why do you hate America you pinko commie anarchosocialfascist?! - govtdoesnotwork, on 05/20/2009, -2/+21Graham was a pretty good governor. Everyone liked him, and even back then he constantly took notes. He'd have probably made a better Presidential candidate than Kerry in 2004.
- Doxocopa, on 05/20/2009, -1/+19This may sound a bit of the road from above comments... but have you noticed how easily today people just resort to lies and … lye, lye, lye... as if by some sort of magic Cinderella pass a repeated lye is turned into truth? - It is a worldwide phenomenon: “have a problem? – Don’t worry… just lye about it!”
- Insightful, on 05/20/2009, -2/+19Note to CIA:
Even if you briefed every single Senator and Congressmen, that does not make your act any less reprehensible or illegal. - highlymodified, on 05/20/2009, -2/+18Not to spam, but the idea needs to be out there:
THE CIA DOESN'T MAKE ANYONE SAFER. It has triggered lies at home and genocide abroad.
The CIA either needs to be severely restructured for oversight and sufficiently segregated from international politics, or completely disbanded.
The CIA trained Osama bin Laden, fueled El Salvadorian death squads, orchestrated coup d'etat in several Central American nations, paying paramilitaries (often with drugs) to fight our wars quietly as in Laos...why do we believe their modern methods are helpful to anyone, including ourselves? - arianapaz, on 05/20/2009, -1/+17lies as a way of life in American government, I should get used to it but never will, it will continue to surprise me. This story boggles the mind, creating false memos and letters with false dates hoping that if someone like Pelosi or Graham said "no that did not happen" well all you have to do is destroy them, that's easy enough. which is what happens anyway, let's destroy all the truth tellers............
- beakerwimp, on 05/20/2009, -0/+15Bob Graham was a Democratic Senator from Florida. You must have him confused with Senator Lindsey Graham who is a Republican Senator from South Carolina. Not that it changes the central point. Bob Graham's meticulous notes keep contradicting the CIA's "record keeping".
- ClosedCaption, on 05/20/2009, -4/+17Which one will happen next?
A) Bob Graham will be accused of lying and hating our intel agencies
B) Graham will be told to leave the GOP because "he never really was a republican"
C) Republicans auto-agreement mechanisms will short circuit from the existence of two different opinions in the same party
If republicans want to stick to "politicians lie but the CIA never does" mantra they will eat those words in the future - absurdist, on 05/20/2009, -1/+12Lye is corrosive. It eats away at the truth. Dissolves it like a clump of hair in your drain.
Oh wait... you meant lie, didn't you? - beardog4321, on 05/21/2009, -1/+10Why should anything change with the CIA? They have a long history of deceit and deception, decades long, but these republicans and their latest meme is so freaking hypocritical, it is beyond any rational logic. But maybe that is why it works for them. Rather then focus on the actual violations of the law, i.e. torture, and all those responsible for instituting it, and all the other little, or big dirty secrets, the meme says lets focus on who was at at some meeting where this was suppose to be said. Huh? I just saw Boehner on CNN with Wolfie, and as usual Wolfie let Boehner slide on many falsehoods and lies, and let him puff himself up with his supposed righteous indignation. Boy, sometimes, even though I am a veteran who is disabled, I would love to take these folks to task out behind the woodshed. I really think we need a true revolution, every generation or so, like Jefferson talked about. I am just getting fed up with all this crap.
- spriggig, on 05/21/2009, -1/+9That bastard Cheney is on TV every night spinning his lies and trying to set the stage in case the ***** hits the fan. I say it's time to throw the ***** at the fan and see where it lands. I want to know what happened, who died for what and who got filthy rich.
Justice delayed is justice denied! - FlaNative, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8Our great DINO leaders are to blame;
The "Impeachment is off the table" gave Bush all the permission he wanted for anything.
Pelosi allowed it to happen by not impeaching the a-hole years ago.. - clvngodess, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7Great pun.
- clvngodess, on 05/20/2009, -2/+8I don't like the sexist comments, from anyone. However, I'm not going to let Pelosi off the hook. She's a tool, saying one thing to get elected and then recanting once she took office.
- Echota, on 05/20/2009, -2/+8@ highlymodified...............you are telling the truth with your post!
- kingmanic, on 05/21/2009, -1/+6The CIA has always been loose with the truth and morality.
- homercles337, on 05/21/2009, -5/+9Thanks to the Bush Administration politicizing *everything*.
- spider-man, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3Since Bob Graham is a democrat I highly doubt the he will be told to leave the GOP.
- Eorster, on 05/21/2009, -3/+6I never thought I would see the utter destruction of the republican party. What a mess. They don't know if they are coming or going.
- kingmanic, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4Sure but the otherside has nothing. So on one side you have personal dated notes. On the other. Nothing. Which leaves some doubt but it's the CIA. As trust worthy as a Kuwaiti business deal. (see recent Dow Chemical Kuwait deal for a reference)
- Dustin00, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2She said "Empeachment is off the table" and she blocked all the hearing to investigate any allegations that were being made.
The Republicans banked on her word.
Put 'em all on trial. - utopianlady, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Bob Graham is a wanker!
- Tiskel, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Do you really think he creates the notes in a vacuum? His notes would need to mesh with thousands of other notes and public records to make sense. If he were faking them, he would have to be part of one huge conspiracy. Or, he is correct and the CIA (conspiracy? them?) is correct. I'm siding with the Senator, since it has been demonstrated repeatedly that the CIA will do just about anything to cover itself.
Given the parties involved, anyone who doesn't at least question the veracity of the documents being brought forth by the CIA has let their hatred of a political party cloud all judgment. - stuffradio, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Why not get both at the same time...?
- spider-man, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3"The CIA's word isn't worth a damn, nor is Bush's, Cheney's"
But the word of a Democratic senator is golden, I suppose. - JohnnySoftware, on 07/27/2009, -0/+1Lameness; the link to the page this points to is broken. It is throwing up a 404 error. Anyone got the new URL for the page, that works?
I'm getting tons of these 404 errors this summer for things that were posted this year, supposedly. What is up? Did CMS developers suddenly forget about "durable URLs" or are people just "making up" a post to an imaginary article?
Either way, it is very lame. And Digg does not seem to have a mechanism for correcting broken links, other than posting them in a comment someplace. - loki49152, on 05/21/2009, -4/+3Osama bin Laden never trained with CIA. He actually chastised other mujahedeen for doing so because he already considered us the next enemy to fight after the Soviet Union.
- 3tcp, on 05/21/2009, -5/+3I might believe this is Pelosi's other actions and positions regarding exposing the truth about what has been going on and investigating those in the bush administration responsible for all this didn't indicate that she knew about this all along and was trying to hide it.
If she hadn't been an accomplice in the bush administration's quest to hide the truth for so long then I might believe her. Why would she be such a devoted advocate for secrecy and supporter of bush/cheney's plans if she didn't know just how politically damaging it would be if everyone knew what she knew (and that she knew it)?
I'm not very interested in what the republicans say about her, I have suspected that she knew about this ever since I heard about it. She has not been an advocate for public disclosure on an issue where it would have been very relevant to the interests of the american people. - digbird, on 05/21/2009, -7/+4I remember a saying "People believe that which they find pleasant to believe." That's pretty much true of anyone and everyone.
Bob Graham could be telling the truth, but why is he more or less credible than the CIA? Graham's a politician. He's not standing above it all.
Maybe Graham is right and the CIA is wrong, but it is possible that the CIA is right and Graham is wrong. - loki49152, on 05/21/2009, -9/+4Has it occurred to anyone else that meticulously detailed notebooks are an excellent way to CYA, particularly if you write them to show yourself only in a favorable light? The fact that the notes are detailed does not imply that those details are true.
