- nickiank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try telling that to the locals. You know what a lot of folks here in Chicago say when you bring up Daley? "Well, he's a corrupt S.O.B., but you know what? I like him." I've heard this more or less verbatim so many times in the six years I've lived here that I've lost count. The bastard's got his hands in *everything* and is more or less king here, down to the feudal sense of the word. Scary thing is that there's enough people working for the city who rely on his particular brand of corruption and cronyism, and enough people who benefit from it in a secondary or even tertiary fashion, that he continues to stay in power. In the eyes of many, the man can do no wrong.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Having lived here 5 years, I cannot belive the ***** they let Daley get away with. They could fill a whole day of the Tribune with all the stories of corruption that have gone on while he was in office, yet he had "no idea" any of them were going on.
- nickiank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone whining about "liberal" Chicago must not be paying attention to the fact that one of the big issues here is police brutality. In a traditionally liberal environment, such would be decried. The problem is not liberalism, but straight-ticket voters who don't pay attention to what a given individual's platform actually happens to be about, figuring that *surely* all Democrats are on the lookout for the lower class...something Daley honestly doesn't give a ***** about it he has never made a serious effort to crack down on the rampant police brutality here that extends to electric-shock-on-the-nads-to-coerce-a-false-confession policy and beyond. Traditionally, liberals don't tolerate ***** like that.
- qaddafi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know why people don't give a ***** what he does? It's because he's a lefty :)
and I LOVE HIM! - inactive, on 12/26/2008, -2/+4Daley is a corrupt, old man, IMHO.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget, this is in Illinois and Daley is the least of our problems as far as corruption goes. Just look at the past two governors of the state, Ryan and Blagojevich. With so much of this going on at so many different levels in the government, it really isn't surprising that people will overlook Daley's corruption as long as he does an otherwise half decent job.
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a culture of corruption to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Illinois is a liberal la la land where I lived for too many years. As long as the people aren't revolting [the good ones moved away years ago], the graft is flowing, and they vote the democratic ticket no one really cares what happens. Chicago cops are the enforcers in that city who are amongst the 2 groups allowed to own guns there [criminals are the other group]. If you want to catch a break you had better have pockets filled with cash.
The people tortured did not heed the liberal party line. You are free to be a terrorist, you are free to deal drugs, but you are not free to mess with liberal policy in Illinois. That is why you cannot find a decent conservative Representative in the entire state. - Altanar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't fight King Daley.
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a difference between military torture to coerce information and pure police brutality. The police almost never have an excuse to torture (the only time would be when you capture a suspect who left a kidnapped person to die, which really doesnt happen often), and even the military should do it when they are sure a person has very important information. It should never be a widely used technique. In this case, however, you have a corrupt politician who lived on plausible deniability, although it seems he probably knew what was going on anyway. As corrupt as they come.
- Yaa101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Nazi supporters said the same after the war, "we didn't know".
b.t.w. ***** Godwin!!! - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Prove he did then...
as much as my 'spider sense' is telling me he had to know what was going on... Why can't one single newspaper, or one single news report flat out prove he ordered, or knew what was going on in any of these cases? - floorman56, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Remember when he tore up the runway at Meigs Field in the middle of the night?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meigs_Field - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are the anti-torture liberals on this topic? I guess they redefined the word again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EAMUS1CATULI, thank you for proving my point. :o)
- EAMUS1CATULI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If the title is true then i truely have much more respect for him ....Just when i thought i wasnt going to vote for him this changes my vote.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nickiank, I lived in Chitcago for almost 30 years, and I am here to tell you that You are Wrong!
From the first Daley administration right through to the current one police brutality has been the norm in that city. Nothing has changed in well over 30 years including the party running that city. You can talk all week long about how 'caring' liberals, and liberalism are/is, but the actions allowed by your beloved liberals do not bear out your hypothesis. Not even a little bit. Not at all.
