- Bartboy919, on 06/01/2009, -6/+190HEY, Its June 1st, Not April 1st!
- d4nie1, on 06/01/2009, -15/+129While I am glad he has spoken his support, I can't help but think that if he didn't have a gay daughter that he would never be taking this stance. Unfortunately I think most hard right wingers are perfectly fine with hate and discrimination unless they are personally affected by it.
- RonPauls, on 06/01/2009, -24/+134So Cheney supports gay marriage, and fundamentalist Christian Obama opposes?
How about government just stays out of it, and people can form whatever voluntary personal relationships and contracts that they wish? - rawnzilla, on 06/02/2009, -6/+99But can he see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch™?
- vault, on 06/02/2009, -4/+72I think it's more because of his daughter than the fact he sees which the way the wind's blowing because he's not running for any office. He may have always felt that way and only said otherwise to pick up religious voters.
- manleypciii, on 06/01/2009, -1/+65Well its the legal side of it which most people are interested in. Government does regulate that.
- franklymister, on 06/02/2009, -12/+74Ok, my brain just exploded.
I honestly saw Cheney during that video as a human being, with a real heart.
There's not a single politician in the world that I agree with on every single issue - but damn it feels good to be able to look at them as individuals with their own views, instead of cartoonish "good guys" and "bad guys."
Just for today, I'll go ahead and be a Cheney supporter. Tomorrow, all the right wingers & left wingers can get back to fighting about the war and the economy. For today, though - ok, conservatives, your guy's not all bad. - hadees, on 06/02/2009, -6/+57No its an argument to take the state out of marriage. Marriage is a cultural and religious voluntary pairing. The government doesn't have to approve my girlfriend or my bar mitzvah then why should they have to approve my marriage? The government has no place in any of it. All you need is regular old contract law and custody law. The government shouldn't be in the business of giving tax benefits to people who choose to have a life partner over people who choose to be single. The government shouldn't care. They should stay out of our lives.
- trefitch, on 06/02/2009, -2/+40replace "hard right wingers" with "people" and you've got a solid point.
- z0rk, on 06/01/2009, -10/+47I agree this is mostly a states right issue. having a gay sister and many gay friends i believe gay marriage should be legal. the only place the federal government comes into this is the tax code. leaving gay marriage purely to the states leaves gay couple at a tax disadvantage when compared to straight couples. update the tax code to allow any 2 adults to file jointly and i have no issue what so ever with each state choosing weather to allow gays to marry or not.
- Diefree, on 06/01/2009, -17/+53Wow the anti-civil rights bigots are losing support left and right. First Rick "homosexuals are pedophiles" Warren jumped ship now Dick Cheney. Don't get me wrong Dick Cheney is an evil bastard, but he's a smart evil bastard. He sees which way the wind's blowing.
- thcobbs, on 06/02/2009, -3/+37"Why should it"
Because all the ramifications of "marriage" reside in a legal/statuary basis. Therefore they are the domain of your government.
If you really want your girlfriend to be able to sue you for alimony because you said you loved her to get in her pants once... go ahead and take the "Everyone who loves each other should be married" approach. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -2/+28Actually, Dick Cheney has been consistent on his position in this matter for quite some time. He's supported gay marriage openly for at least a couple of years.

- Koushiro, on 06/02/2009, -6/+30Well Cheney's daughter is a lesbian, isn't she?
- flanflan567, on 06/01/2009, -17/+41I don't care if he supports every GLBT rights issue under the sun, he's still an evil bastard.
On the upside, though, at least this shows the fundies are losing ground. Hell, if that's what a gay child will do for you then I hope one of Obama's daughter's turns out to be a lesbian. - Jeepinator, on 06/02/2009, -0/+22I was against it until I found out that some kid I went to high school with turned out to be gay. I didn't know him well, but I knew him well enough to know he was a normal guy like me with different preferences. I was just plain ignorant of the situation before that. I feel like a lot of people against gays don't actually know any, just like a lot of racists probably don't know any people of other races.
- murrdpirate, on 06/02/2009, -0/+19If you read that article you would see that he supported gay marriage in 2004.
- STPZ, on 06/02/2009, -8/+25the best government is the one that governs the least
- hadees, on 06/02/2009, -3/+20@unlimitedorb, who the hell cares if 3 people want to say they are married How does that affect me and why should the government be involved?
The point is it is neither the government's place to sanctioning or prohibit it. No one says you have to agree. The issue is if the government should be in the business of sanctioning personal relationships. I think it is so obviously a no. Do you want the government to make you get a blood test to have a girlfriend? Should the government tell you that you can only have best friends of the same sex? Marriage is just another social/religious relationship that government has no place in.
@ThaATrain, in the words of one foghorn leghorn, That's a joke... I say, that's a joke, son. - Lefts, on 06/02/2009, -4/+21It's a trap!
- DarkShroud, on 06/02/2009, -4/+21Do you actually think that everyone who votes against gay marriage is a right winger? Most of the "blacks" that voted for Obama also voted against Gay marriage. But Liberals only harass Christians & Mormons for voting the way they did.
- oboshoe, on 06/02/2009, -7/+23Ironic that a right wing conservative ex vice President offers more support for Gay marriage than the current left wing liberal President.
- mrogi, on 06/02/2009, -7/+23Why does anybody give a rat's ass what Dick Cheney has to say? He is no longer an elected official. He left office with an abysmal 13% approval rating. Enough with the dick cheney.
- gethapppy, on 06/02/2009, -0/+15While it is technically a decision for the states to make, it bothers me that other states are allowed to ignore the "full faith and credit" part of the Constitution thanks to that lovely Defense of Marriage Act. All states should recognize the legality of marriages that take place elsewhere, even if that would perhaps defeat the purpose of letting the states decide, seeing as couples would probably just travel to a state where gay marriage is legal, get hitched, then travel back.
- alexra, on 06/02/2009, -9/+23the conservatives must be going crazy right now
- bicyclethief, on 06/02/2009, -8/+22Yeah, I think that's what Katrina victims were chanting while holed up in the superdome.
- nepidae, on 06/02/2009, -0/+13to be honest without country wide acceptance, saying you accept gay marriage only at a state level is still pretty much a sham from these people.
- FirstOne1, on 06/01/2009, -11/+23it should be federal not simply state because federal laws recognize heterosexual marriage. but hey, good for cheney. normally i can't stand the bastard, but apparently having a gay daughter has opened him up a little.
- thunderdonkey, on 06/02/2009, -0/+12This is my latest theory on what it boils down to in the eyes of the vast majority of what are typically considered to be conservative Christians (I'm a fan of the simple explanations, even if they're not what I believe):
In the eyes of God, extramarital sexual relations are wrong.
In the eyes of God, homosexuality is wrong.
In the eyes of God, marriage is a sacrament reserved for the union a man and a woman.
Therefore, legalizing same-sex marriage would imply that their sexual relationship is healthy and blessed by God, and consequently would be the equivalent of dividing their faith by zero.
I'm not saying it's right, but it's the only explanation I can really think of that would stand the test of the conservative Christian's logic (albeit based purely upon my perceptions of it).
This is exactly why the world needs to embrace the separation of church and state both in constitution and conscience. - ThaATrain, on 06/02/2009, -3/+15"[The government] should stay out of our lives."
Whats with the hammer and sickle avatar, if you're opposed to regulation? - michaelrsa, on 06/02/2009, -0/+12That was insightful man, to bad these other people can't let go of their feelings for even two minutes.
- bg2500, on 06/02/2009, -0/+12You are right. His daughter is a lesbian and has been out for a long time.
- tacoman359, on 06/02/2009, -4/+16I guess when you have a gay daughter, you have to support her. But still, its nice to see he has a grip on a small part of reality. I never would have seen him supporting this. Good job, Dick Cheney, for the first thing I have probably ever agreed with you on.
- MrColdheart, on 06/01/2009, -7/+18You made an argument to abolish marriage.
- pintomp3, on 06/02/2009, -0/+11But it should recognize contracts between consenting adults regardless of sexual orientation, hence marriage.
- nepidae, on 06/02/2009, -12/+22this ***** will do anything to stay in the media.
- murrdpirate, on 06/02/2009, -4/+14He clearly says that he believes anyone should be able to form any union they want. You're just trying to see this in a negative light because you already have a negative view of him. That's called bias.
- Dewhead, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10Or maybe Cheney just supports gay marriage? Some people do and some don't in both political parties. I know its a shock to some democrats but not all republicans believe exactly the same thing.
- DiscoUnderpants, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10@deadmoo
Would those contracts not be enforced and regulated by the government? - superkendall, on 06/02/2009, -4/+13Isn't that a plenty good reason?
- CasualReader, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Well no. Back in 2000 in a public debate he said about gay unions:
Mr Cheney said: "We live in a free society and freedom means freedom for everybody . . . it's really no one else's business." He added, "I try to be open-minded about it as much as I can", and said he felt it was up to each state to decide how relationships were recognised.
He has been fairly consistent on this issue but of course not very loud since as Vice President he might not think it proper to contradict his President. - pintomp3, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9Neo-cons tend to he hawkish on foreign policy and pro-corporation, but often only support conservative social policy to keep the religious nutters on board.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -2/+11so all conservatives believe the same thing? wow you must be a moon bat then.
- geoboy, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10The Katrina disaster is the epitome of bad government, not less government. In fact, the idea that big Uncle Sam is gonna make sure everything's ok and will come to the rescue if need be is what made people stay in their ***** homes instead of evacuate. But yeah, it's pretty insulting that being the war mongering super power that we are, we can't even manage to conduct a rescue operation on one of our own cities. Our big ass government can't get the priorities straight. There's a fine endorsement for government that governs a lot (but can't govern worth *****).
- CasualReader, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9You are right. If religious people do not wish to marry gays in their church, they won't be forced to.
But, they should not be allowed to force others to follow their prejudice. Gay Marriage SHOULD be available to those who want it. - trefitch, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9that or ***** like you and me haven't stopped talking about him yet :P
- COINTELPROAgent, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9Appose - is that like, to have no opinion either way?
