- hemphill81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22If Schwarzenegger can win an election I am sure Barkley can. He can just head butt voters that will not vote for him.
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Gnarls Barkley should run instead.
or...
Sir Charles should get votes based on the Sega game "Barkley's Shutup and Jam" - drjjoyner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Heh. He's been saying this for about 15 years but always bumps the date back.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9He should run a "shut up and vote" ad campaign.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Many people that say that about the south haven't been to the south. Or they're southerners that haven't been out of the south to see how it's worse in many areas far, far away from the south. Racism isn't a southern thing.
- CamoChris, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12A Barkley quote from the article :"Republicans and Democrats want to argue over stuff that's not important, like gay marriage or the war in Iraq or illegal immigration." So the War in Iraq isn't important? I thought it would be with people dieing and all, but I must be wrong because a Basketball player says so.
- zerovertex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Barkley was born in Leeds, Alabama and went to Auburn University.

If he does, he's got my vote! - Manhigh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8He'd have a much better chance if he had been in the movie "Predator."
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Gnarls Barkley Campaign Slogan:
"Yeah, I was out of touch, but it wasn't because I didn't know enough. I just knew too much. Does that make me crazy?" - Dred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What sucks is I live in Alabama. It really doesn't matter who runs for governor here they all are corrupt. I guess the people here don't know when they are being ripped off. They recently convicted ex-governor Siegleman of several crimes against the state. As far as everyone saying people in Alabama are racist should come and see that we are not. The mayor of Birmingham is black, and the mayor of Bessemer and way to many others to list.
- caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Riley's done ok in some areas (hurricane disasters) but he's treated state employees like crap. He's frozen their wages for years, tried to take away holidays that were given to them decades ago in lieu of raises and now claims we have a state surplus. How can he try and pass this HUGE tax increase his first years in office due to the state being so poor and now he says we have a SURPLUS?!? Lucy's getting my vote.
- forrest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Way to open your mouth and let the stupid leak out. Noone cares to hear your misconceptions about something you are totally clueless about. Look at the number of Democrat governors since 1900... And TONS of elected politicians here are black. Get a brain, moran.

Robert R. Riley 2003— Republican - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i am so voting for the chuckster, it ain't even funny. anybody who can take down shaq in a straight up fight wins my vote.
joyner's right, he needs to make it happen already - Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i cant actually read this article, the absurdity of it may cause a brain anurism.
- whiskerlickins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lucy has my vote. I don't really care for any politicians in this state (damn Everett voted against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act :/) but she's the lesser of the two evils in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
- Cynoclast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This might actually be news when he ACTUALLY RUNS FOR GOVERNOR.
Is nobody else sick of speculative "news"? - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You probably have to read it in the context of what's important to the people of Alabama.
- halytech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yah Charles has a house in Greystone in Shelby County, just south of the city of Birmingham. Not sure how often he has to be there to maintain state residency, but he's there sometimes.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Feh. Siegelman!? That man is bad, bad, bad. Is Riley any good? No. But Siegelman!? Bwahahaha. Show me a Alabama governor that isn't a 'good ol' boy' and I'll... well, it isn't going to happen in Alabama.
- Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Come on guys.... he will bring gambling to that state which would generate a huge surplus in tax money. I think that is the only topic he could talk about intelligently
- colforbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Barkley has been saying this for years, and every time it makes the news. If I am not mistaken though 10-12 years ago, he declared himself a Republican. He will never win, he has said to many derogatory things about the state. I have heard him in interviews before basically saying that he hated the state of Alabama.
- halytech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yah he hates it here until he's here (Birmingham) for some golf tournament. When he's here he's out with his entourage every night at clubs up and down the 280. Heck I seen him pull a bartender (female) over the bar just to give her a smooch.
Not sure if that's gubernatorial material or not.
On the other hand, when I did meet him he seemed like a nice guy. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ah, finally some positive news from the US finally
- forrest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dred, I was just saying the exact same thing about the deep rooted corruption in Alabama politics to a coworker. I live in Bham - and it has been like that forever.
Spot on about the racism too. Yes, there are racists here - just like everywhere else in the world. - Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still waiting for Carl Weathers to get elected. Who doesn't want Apollo Creed as their governor?!
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I live in Birmingham and even though I'm a foreigner I have noticed that most of Alabama's government is run by blacks. I think Barkley could have a chance here.
- e03179, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The people of Alabama need a democrat Gov candidate. The last dem Gov is now going to jail for fraud. A few weeks ago, he was still running for the democratic nomination. He didn't win, but got a lot % of the vote. Luxy Baxley is taking on Gov. Bob Riley (R) for the seat this Nov. Riley is heavily favored (and has done a good job, anyway).
- efriese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like Riley better than all of the alternatives. He really pissed me off when he claimed he was in favor of rewriting the constitution during the last election, and then didn't do crap about it. I hope Barkley does run as a dem, he'll get the royal ***** kicked out of him.
"If it wasn't for Arkansas and Mississippi, we'd be dead last in everything. I think we can do better."
I agree we can do better, but he hasn't seen any recent statistics. Alabama is actually improving in most areas. - newtonapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Charles for pres!
- SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah I remember that. What a whore. In his books, he rants and raves about taxes and hob nobs with Bush Sr in the early 90's. Now he abandons his values instead of working to change things.
Some memorable quotes:
"Poor People and minorities tend to vote Democrat. That's why they're poor."
"I'm a rich black man. If Clinton is elected, I'm just a black man." - caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Oh, and Charles can go F himself. Blacks are a tiny percentage of voters and Mr. Barkley would have to do something to change that if he thinks he stands a chance. All these old white men voters aren't going to elect a basketball star to run their state.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Karl Malone for president!!!
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah Charles Barkley tells the doctor he hurt his leg playing basketball, then he gives the painkillers he gets to Rush Limbaugh. A match made in heaven.
- CableCarrier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YES. PLEASE.
Anyone but Bob Riley. - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He must CRAAAAAZZZZY, he must be CRAAA ...
oh - I thought you meant someone else. - airship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was going to make a joke about how dumb the people of Alabama would be to elect Charles Barkley governor, then I remembered I'm from Iowa and we elected 'Gopher' from 'The Love Boat' to the U.S. House of Representatives*, so I decided to shut up.
*Unfortunately, not a joke. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1:D !
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I swear that DJ Dangermouse can do anything if he sets his mind to it.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gah, I can't even stand to look at Barkley... I can't imagine him entering politics.
Why is it that celebrities suddenly think its justifiable to ride their fame into office? We already have many incompetents in office. We don't need celebrities in the mix. - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Supposed to be that way for Senate, too, but that didn't stop Hillary Clinton. Hell, at least Sir Charles is FROM Ala. He has ALWAYS claimed Ala as his home. I'm pretty sure Hillary had never lived one day in NY before she decided to run for Senate.
And about the Dem thing, that really surprised me. From hearing him talk several years ago, I was sure he would have been a REAL (not GWB) Republican, or a Libertarian. Most certainly not a Dem. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the chuckster was on pti today discussing this. rerun at 6:30pm est on espn news.
- CurtyD13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not only do you have to live in the state but you have to have been a resident for 7 years....seeing how hes not currently a resident of alabama it will be at least 7 years till he will run
- caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@reddevil
Alvin Holmes is a black politician and he's about the most racist person I know. He pitched a fit a few months back because the state map doesn't have "Martin Luther King Memorial Highway" labeled unless you look at the blow up of Montgomery. He wanted to spend tons of taxpayer's money to have them all reprinted. I never vote for anyone that supports him and his racist agenda. - rbug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah Barkley first started saying this in the 90's. He was going to run for governor then as a republican. He was friends with Rush Limbaugh at the time and Rush said he would happily support his run for governor.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3ugh.
- CutClose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0GINOBLI!!!
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Or throw them through a plate glass window.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Many people underestimate the racism of the south.
Unfortunately I don't think he stands a chance. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5That's where I think he'll run into a problem. If you've heard him speak, he doesn't seem to think hard before he opens his mouth. He wants to get a point across but doesn't realize he's belittleing the war (in this case). He probably didn't mean that but that's the way he talks. He isn't a great speaker by any means.
And remember, he is not a role model :D - anelajett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0great, another sports / hollywood entertainer who thinks they should run for office with ZERO experience. but then again, he'll probably score.
hell, crack whore marion barry was voted back in office as mayor!
whose to blame for any state or district's sad state of affairs, the candidates that run for office or the public that votes them in? i'd say the latter. voters need to do more research vs. partisan voting or going with a recognizable name. -
