Chandler buys prime real estate for development
eastvalleytribune.com — Chandler officials are moving forward with plans to spend up to $12 million to buy a prime parcel of real estate in the city so it can be held for private development.

- IslandJeff, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1On one hand, this is the theoretical opposite of Eminent Domain, and abuses therefrom, which we have seen in abundance throughout the years (has anyone gone after Justice Souter's New Hampshire house, yet?).
While I'm not crazy about legislators directly authorizing public funds to purchase private property on the open market, this deal still had a willing seller, and may still convey "public benefit", if there exists such an animal. What Chandler should do is establish a Citizen Commission to review such things. The only answer to government, ergo, is more government. What a wonderful world.
