I first heard that term in that Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns runs for Governor. Burns used the term in a derogatory way, making fun of the lazy and fat alcoholic American who isn't really that bright. Tim Taylor from that grunting tool show, Al Bundy, Hank Hill, and even Phillip J. Fry from Futurama.
Now that Palin is using catchphrases like crazy, lumping every American into two categories, the Joe Sixpack, and the Hockey Mom who has to only take care of her kids just like in the past before women got their civil rights.
The term used to be John Q. Public, an extremely bland name that basically describes the average American citizen. No one assumed if he was some redneck, an elitist, a nice guy, or a jerk. Mr. Public was just a guy. Apparently, McCain's party believes he doesn't exist anymore, and that we are divided into dimwits, and elitists.
Stop the use of demeaning catchphrases, it only furthers the image that we're idiots that need to be patronized.
