- thethinktank, on 02/20/2008, -69/+222Take that McCain, Obama IS strong on national security. Where wars breed terror, precision operations like this stop it in its tracks.
- Elderon, on 02/20/2008, -19/+142"as president, he would target Al Qaeda officials in Pakistan even without the country's acquiescence"
This part makes me nervous. As glad as I am that they are going after Al Qaeda now, going into any country and doing whatever you want regardless of their law's is both hypocritical and dangerous. I know I would be pissed if another country had troops or spies doing whatever they wanted here in the U.S. though most likely they probably already are. - captainboog, on 02/20/2008, -30/+110EVEN IF 9/11 happened like the mainstream says it happened (I don't think it did), a little look at the history of our "foreign policy" and CIA intervention in the Middle East would explain why it happened. The U.S. has been ***** over the Middle East ever since WW2. Before that, it was the British Empire and a few other European empires, doing the ***** over. We like to scream and chant about freedom and democracy. Well maybe if we had given the Middle East a chance at that, instead of being under the rule of Western puppet governments, they wouldn't have gotten so pissed off.
Please please please look at the history of Iran. How the CIA overthrew their government and installed the Shah. He was then overthrown by the people.
Remember that thing called the American Revolution? Wherein our forefathers got rid of foreign domination? What the hell do you think we've been doing in the Middle East all these years? Dominating. Dominating for oil and geopolitical reasons. - xGORDOx, on 02/20/2008, -48/+123If Bush had done this exact same operation, you would be crying "war crime" for him invading a sovereign country.
The hypocrisy is astounding! - Tangaroa, on 02/20/2008, -25/+85It's amazing that the media almost unanimously reported it as a gaffe when Obama proposed this. Most misreported what Obama said, so who knows.
- saturnx8, on 02/20/2008, -34/+91You people condemn the CIA for waterboarding, and assassinations but its okay the CIA to perform "operations" that Obama says are okay. Hypocrits
- MacEnvy, on 02/20/2008, -16/+72If citizens residing in our country were plotting attacks against Russia, and some had proven the ability to carry out such attacks, I wouldn't blame Russia for trying to take them out in precision strikes if we proved unable or unwilling to do so. It's just a matter of perspective.
- microbreak, on 02/20/2008, -6/+58ummm... Bush DID do this operation...!?!
The idiocy is astounding! - heartcoldfusion, on 02/20/2008, -20/+65Awesome. So we go into another country without their permission, violate their autonomy, kill some people, and then praise Obama for his great ideas.
NO!! The CIA is not allowed to do this kind of *****. Just because we're America doesn't mean we can send some geeks to prance about in another country after they say we can't. If they say we're not allowed in their country, we shouldn't be there, despite whether we think it's a good idea or not. This is the kind of ***** that the Bush administration has been doing for near 8 years now.
Obama talks about change, but this ***** is just more of the same... - Arkavus, on 02/20/2008, -17/+55Anyone know if Firefox has a Truther Garbage Block add on?
- strafefire, on 02/20/2008, -24/+62"Take that McCain, Obama IS strong on national security"
So, that means that Russia and other countries have a right to violate our borders to hunt down "terror suspects" without our permission, and have "acceptable" collateral damage, right? Because that is what you are advocating... - tastypaste, on 02/20/2008, -3/+37The media has more misreporting than actual reporting these days.
- clayasaurus, on 02/20/2008, -21/+55Digg is officially retarded. Don't you understand that having our CIA mess around with other countries is what gets us in trouble in the first place? Obama is not going to change the corruption and evil in the government, he's just going to put a new face to it.
- Arkavus, on 02/20/2008, -5/+35At least he didn't say he would invade Pakistan. X_X
And yes there are spies in the US. The Chinese for one are actively trying to get at our military technology. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 02/20/2008, -19/+48So HuffPo bragging on how similar Obama's foreign policy looks to Bush's?
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -6/+32If you read the article instead of making broad assumptions you would realize that we asked Pakistan to act on the intelligence we received, they did nothing. Obama's words were "If Pakistan won't do it, we will."
- hydroplane, on 02/20/2008, -6/+32Obama vs Osama, wheres don king.
- imapluralist, on 02/20/2008, -7/+29"unusual autonomy"
I love the CIA - DreKor, on 02/20/2008, -0/+20I think he was referring to the ones who had been working at Boeing and other military contractors. It was in the news recently. I don't think this guy is harboring any enemy agents, so you can calm down.
- hokie47, on 02/20/2008, -7/+26This is how you prevent terrorism. Good intelligence and precision strikes. Not large scale wars and Fox news stories that makes my grandmother not want to go outside.
- JanYpe, on 02/20/2008, -6/+24Yes he is. Obama is made out of pure ideas. Wrapped in a cloth of change and armed with the shield of charm he will behead the foul Medusa.
- T4z3R, on 02/20/2008, -6/+24Maybe he is ideas?
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -4/+21Hi. Welcome to Digg. Are you new here?
- The_Wallbanger, on 02/20/2008, -1/+18I think if you read the article more carefully you'll find that the Huffington Post is implying that Bush ridiculed Obama's proposition, but later authorized the operation. It's more of an about-face premise.
- GhostRidr, on 02/20/2008, -4/+21This wasn't done without permission. The US has a specific agreement with Pakistan to not need advanced notice of action originating from two air bases, one of which this drone took off from. Nothing illegal was done here.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/20/2008, -1/+18Obama v Osama. High Dramas in the Bahamas.
TELL YO MAMMA! - Treshnell, on 02/20/2008, -5/+22Product of Bush.
- LJSeinfeld, on 02/20/2008, -5/+22I think one has to make the differential between the CIA going somewhere and whacking a known and sworn enemy of the USA and "messing" around in other countries. For example, I don't agree with the CIA or its operatives overthrowing regimes just for the sake of installing a government that is more receptive to playing ball with US Companies. (ala Confessions of an Economic Hitman).
But we do need to send a message in no uncertain terms that if you mess with America or it's citizens we will come find you wherever you are. Ideally a person would be brought for trial... but sometimes you need to "talk" to these people in a language they will more easily understand: "If you kill us, we will kill you back -- and we're better at it than you." - martoq, on 02/20/2008, -4/+20That title is a little misleading. Obama didn't directly have anything to do with the operation as the title implies. It merely draws a parallel between Obama statements regarding foreign a policy on enemies of the state and a CIA operation that was carried out.
- dagnabbit, on 02/20/2008, -4/+20This was a tactic criticized by the White House and others when Obama advocated it. This article shows 1) Bush's hypocrisy on national security policy and 2) Obama's position worked. Did you actually read the article?
- a6n28f, on 02/20/2008, -3/+18Countries don't have allies, only interests. Further, Pakistan does not have a monolithic government and certainly not reliable leadership within the ISID. Hell, that's why the NWFP are the modern day wild west - the government has no control over the tribes and any attempt to assert it is derailed by sympathizers in the ISID. Bottom line, any attempt at a joint-op with liaison would be blown from the start. Notice how we've never been able to pursue terrorist leaders into the NWFP and border areas? That's why. Obama called for the only thing that would work.
- tastypaste, on 02/20/2008, -17/+32So who's the real enemy? Jews, aliens, bigfoot, Illuminati? Which theory with no evidence do YOU support GhostyBoy?
Give the conspiracy theories a rest already. It's just absurd. - inactive, on 02/20/2008, -4/+19"I know I would be pissed if another country had troops or spies doing whatever they wanted here in the U.S. though most likely they probably already are."
Israel? - gummih, on 02/20/2008, -3/+18Obama's words "If we have actionable intelligence about high value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will" Two key points that nobody should miss: "actionable intelligence" and "President Musharraf won't act" he was talking about a last resort.
After weeks of discourse surrounding the policy,Obama said there was "misreporting" of his comments, claiming that, "I never called for an invasion of Pakistan or Afghanistan." He clarified that rather than a surge in the number of troops in Iraq, there needs to be a "diplomatic surge" and that if there were "actionable intelligence reports" showing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, the U.S. troops as a last resort should enter and try to capture terrorists. That would happen, he added, only if "the Pakistani government was unable or unwilling" to go after the terrorists - nihilite, on 02/20/2008, -2/+16"Bush, who after seven long years in the deep end (not the IL legislature, people) has learned a thing or two about how to deal with complex and dangerous foreign countries."
Bush's strategy is to either a) invade them and destroy their nation and bankrupt our own or b) sell them advanced weapons.
Maybe i am missing the subtle genius at play here. - Envark, on 02/20/2008, -4/+18I read it on the Internet. It MUST be true!

What part of "Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval." suggests that they got authorization? - Wargalas, on 02/20/2008, -0/+13Just to play devil's advocate here, what would all of your reactions be if the mission went horribly awry and dozens of civilians are killed? Would you honestly have the same reaction? I'm not trying to troll, I want you to look at it from the other side of the coin.
- xerigen, on 02/20/2008, -3/+16It was a CIA operation that put Musharraf in in the first place. Another what have you done for me lately situation just like Osama. STAY OUT OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS OF OTHER COUNTRIES!
- Scrappy1850, on 02/20/2008, -4/+16what else is the CIA suppossed to do? browse Digg all day?
- BobSconce, on 02/20/2008, -4/+15What exactly was the administration supposed to say at the time? "Oh. That's a great idea. In fact, we have a top secret operation to do just that going on right now"??
Even a broken clock is right occasionally. - pintomp3, on 02/20/2008, -1/+12pointing out the truth is anti-semitic.

http://www.nysun.com/article/14523 - inactive, on 02/20/2008, -2/+13and David Rockefeller personally asked Jimmy Carter to give the despotic shah a temporary home in the US so that we could shelter and protect him. This guy deserved to be hung by a mob in Iran...instead we protected the tyrant.
- Ninja337, on 02/20/2008, -7/+18How is invading Pakistan without asking a good thing
- notque, on 02/20/2008, -2/+13Then you are advocating your government to break international law, and commit war crimes.
- The_Wallbanger, on 02/20/2008, -9/+19Obama realizes that winning the war on terror requires operations with surgical precision and trustworthy intelligence. Bush has been fighting it with carpet bombing and massive overkill. This old style of combat is reminicent of the revolutionary war where the British lined up their Redcoats on the battle field, but were defeated from riflefire in the forest. America needs to fight smarter, not harder.
- Houndstooth, on 02/20/2008, -2/+12I'm not saying that what has happened to the Middle East is okay, but you have to go back a lot further to detail the strife and struggle for supremacy in this region, like thousands of years. The land has been settled and resettled, won and lost, by so many different empires and warlords, it is no wonder that war seems to be it's only constant.
- tastypaste, on 02/20/2008, -4/+14From your link:
"The following text is a fatwa, or declaration of war, by Osama bin Laden first published in Al Quds Al Arabi, a London-based newspaper, in August, 1996. The fatwa is entitled "Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places."
One problem with your assertion that this is our fault, we aren't occupying the "Land of the Two Holy Places" and we never have. Osama is a misguided fool who ordered other misguided fools to crash planes into two buildings and murder 3,000 civilians without provocation. Civilians who had nothing to do with what happens in Israel. Civilians who have never picked up arms against Muslims. Civilians who were only going to work to feed their families. How was this their fault? What did they do to deserve this? Nothing, you insensitive prick. I wish your family members had been in those buildings so you would have a taste of these people's pain. Pain that was brought to them by psychotic madmen on the other side of the planet for no purpose.
And I know that being the douche that you are, you're going to say that our government did it to their people. Yeah, and it was ***** wrong. Those civilians didn't deserve it either. They were just more casualties caught in the crossfire. But you just go on ahead and blame them if it makes you feel better. Dick. -
