- RickHavoc, on 09/27/2008, -17/+324McCain never turned to look at Obama. It came off as being either arrogant or afraid.
- blakecr, on 09/27/2008, -9/+215Everything from CNN polls to media curve to cbs and more give Obama about a 60/40 win with independents. Only drudges has gone to McCain by more then 70%. The real story here is if Obama keeps the Dems and maintains a 60% or more with independents, he wins by a landslide.
Dems constitute 10 million more of the electorate then republicans. If Obama wins around 85% of these and 55% or more of the indys it is no contest.
Obama wasn't too risky nor arrogant. He did what he needed to do to look like a good choice for independents. This is what will win the election, not partisanship by de either side.
From here to election, it is a fight for the independent vote. Obama does not need to take risks, he just needs to pick off a few here and there until election day and he is POTUS #44. - peheimbach, on 09/27/2008, -14/+203McCain never looked at the camera, either. Barack certainly did.
- thenekkidtruth, on 09/27/2008, -11/+172Why Barack won:
1 The undecided American public only needed to see whether or not Barack is a reasonable, rational, and knowledgeable statesman. He left them no doubt.
2 Barack was more consistently correct on the issues as Americans see it - specifically, right on Iraq, Afghanistan and Russia.
3 A small point, but it needs to be a bigger one - McCain made dozens of mistakes on the issues, big and small. He thought pre-Musharraf Pakistan was a "failed state", for instance - it wasn't. It was a fully-functional state taken over through force by a military general turned autocrat.
4 The best McCain can claim today is that Barack fundamentally agrees with him on most issues. That's not good enough for him - McCain needed to prove significant superiority on his Foreign Policy knowledge and experience - his self-admitted core competency - and he was unable to do that.
5 The big one is demeanor. Barack was poised, reasonable, confident, addressed the host by name and looked McCain in the eye. McCain came off as snide, smirky and condescending - it looked for all the world like he has a hidden, seething agenda. Personally, I think he does, but that's another day. The net result is that he likely disenfranchised the female vote, especially, who tend to prefer someone who's more reasonable, rational, and open to discussion.
A whole LOT OF UNDECIDED voters wanted to know that Barack Obama has the demeanor to be President, and he not only delivered - he sprinted past McCain in this regard. Expect a significant uptick in Obama's polling numbers as a direct result of this solid performance. - enantiodromia, on 09/27/2008, -12/+159i really do feel bad for McCain, he used to be an alright guy, now he's a soulless android serving shadowy masters
- Sogladtobehere, on 09/27/2008, -7/+89I think he was just really pissed off that the "uppity" black man wouldn't allow him to postpone/ cancel the debate. He came off as a fool for having to flip flop on his stance (again).
- hardcrocodile, on 09/27/2008, -33/+112McCain is a wheezebag.
- paintgrl, on 09/27/2008, -8/+83I hope this lead for Obama keeps up. Everything can change at a drop of a hat in this campaign so far.
- bitfreak, on 09/27/2008, -9/+78Dry, stuffy, a bid confused, devoid of respect and class, and looking irritable, McCain kept trying to give us a history lesson and push the emotion button for the Veterans, despite his rating by most veteran's organizations being lower than Obama by a wide margin. The only thing he did was assist Obama in getting closer to the Presidency. If Obama had made the same gaffes, he would have been skewered.
- DangerCollie, on 09/27/2008, -5/+73I didn't think McCain did that poorly in the debate. Certainly better than I expected. If that many people, a clear majority, saw that debate as a win for Obama, that suggests to me they were looking for a reason to like him before the debate. Obama was good enough to clear that bar.
Palin not being available after the debate was a big mistake. It gave Biden a free shot and he really blistered McCain. Had she been there, Biden would have been the loneliest guy in the room. Either she can handle the job or not. If she can't handle it, get her to quit. Otherwise, stop hiding her from the media. Besides, switching veeps right now would be a way to shift the discussion off the economy and unpopular presidency. Pretty pathetic they're down to those type of antics, but that's the hand they got to play. - mywhitenoise, on 09/27/2008, -10/+69I CANNOT wait for next Thursday, this is going to be hilarious to see what Palin has to say. She's an embarrassment to women, and to this country.
- tcbishop12, on 09/27/2008, -8/+61Former Secretary of State Albright said: "Tonight was a breakthrough for Senator Obama, who showed himself truly ready to be president. He responded knowledgeably, thoughtfully and confidently to the toughest questions on the economy, Iraq, and terror.
Meanwhile, Senator McCain spent so much time attacking his opponent, he neglected to show how a McCain-Palin administration would differ from Bush-Cheney. As a result, Obama answered the threshold question about his candidacy; McCain did not."
Steven Brandt said: "John McCain's temperament has been a side-bar issue for some time now, as people wonder if he would take us to war unnecessarily ("bomb bomb Iran"). Speaking of his own temperament, McCain claims he is they guy who works across party lines...if he really wants to work with the Democrats in Congress, he might start by showing some respect for the Democrats' nominee for president, Senator Barack Obama. He might start by actually looking at Barack Obama while he is debating him. I don't know if it's that John McCain's team has told him "Don't get angry" but forgot to say "Remember to treat Senator Obama with respect."
And finally: "This was a clear victory for Barack Obama on John McCain's home turf.
Senator McCain offered nothing but more of the same failed Bush policies, and Barack Obama made a forceful case for change in our economy and our foreign policy.
While Senator McCain wants to keep giving huge tax cuts to corporations and said nothing about the challenges Americans are facing in their daily lives, Barack Obama will be a fierce advocate for tax cuts for the middle class, affordable health care, and a new energy economy that creates millions of jobs.
While foreign policy was supposed to be John McCain's top issue, Barack Obama commanded that part of the debate with a clear call to responsibly end a misguided war in Iraq so that we can finish the fight against al Qaeda in Afghanistan.
John McCain needed a game-changer tonight, and by any measure he didn't get it," said Obama-Biden campaign manager David Plouffe. - JLSN, on 09/27/2008, -9/+57I think McSame just came off as a total *****. Who is going to be able to work with the rest of the world, Obama who is informed and polite, or some old *****.
You decide. - diggproof, on 09/27/2008, -6/+52McCain can't even handle an appearance with David Letterman and we're supposed to believe he'll be tough with foreign leaders. Give me a ***** break.

- AtHomeBoy2000, on 09/27/2008, -1/+45"Only drudges has gone to McCain by more then 70%."
Drudge is an informal online poll while the CBS poll is an actual poll. - emaf37, on 09/27/2008, -6/+49I can't wait for the VP debate where Biden will destroy Failin.
- RodBorn, on 09/27/2008, -0/+40B-I-N-G-O
hell even Faux News agreed with basically everything you beautifully summarized. - MLisa, on 09/27/2008, -3/+42The "Blinking McCain." Did anyone else notice how often he blinked? It drove me buggy. It is also a sign of someone who is lying.
- AmazingSteve, on 09/27/2008, -4/+41Drudge is also a right leaning bag licker.
- internetcoward, on 09/27/2008, -5/+34nice... take on the review.... typical 'conservative' ayuck looka him, he duuuuuuuumb.....'
im glad you are concerned about the issues. - newsfully, on 09/27/2008, -11/+39http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew
- blakecr, on 09/27/2008, -1/+26I know I know. I forgot to say that as well. The point that I was trying to say is that Dems liked Obama and Reps liked McCain so the important thing is the independents. Drudge being GOP leaning they went McCain. The independents went for Obama.
- internetcoward, on 09/27/2008, -3/+27mmm republicans.... so intelligent.

WSJ Readers Give Obama Win In First Debate
http://forums.wsj.com/viewpoll_result.php?t=4111&v ...
- Jpardue, on 09/27/2008, -8/+31Every poll shows Obama won the debate...
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -7/+28I'm just saying from a young voter's point of view, Obama looked a hell of a lot better on TV. I don't know what the difference was on the radio, but on TV, Obama won. McCain looked so so old and the right side of his face is permantely frowning downwards. He looked like a really old, dry, serious grandpa that likes to lecture. There just wasn't a lot of energy to him. Obama, however, looked really good and upbeat and in control and much more pleasant to watch then McCain. If baseing the election on looks alone, Obama would win.
- Dipsomaniac, on 09/27/2008, -0/+21See, the reason you think that polling is like marks in high school is that you don't understand polling.
- AverageJane2, on 09/27/2008, -3/+24For all the deceit and lies, the backstabbing and manipulations, it is no wonder McCain can't look Obama in the eye. Obama is the better man.
- pittpat, on 09/27/2008, -7/+26It's sad that 38% think it was a TIE!
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+20My wife noticed the blinking, and mentioned it. Once she pointed it out, it drove me nuts ;-)
- Cougarcat, on 09/27/2008, -2/+20That wasn't a poll, it was an opinion piece.
- AmazingSteve, on 09/27/2008, -2/+19Digg Poll: McSame took such a bad ***** kicking last night that no talking points have been distributed to the sheeple and they've resorted childish posts because they don't know what else to do. Robots need instructions to function.
- RodBorn, on 09/27/2008, -6/+23Your POLE:being sucked on by a Neocon looking for another 12 year old boy
- melfster, on 09/27/2008, -5/+22I think what these last two weeks show is much of much flip-flopper McCain. First he says the fundamentals of the economy are sound" ..... now its doom and gloom. Then he says he will not be attending he will not attend the debate and then 48 hours he changes his mind. He has flip-flopped on almost every issue I can think of. Can anybody tell me what McCain stands for?
- Dipsomaniac, on 09/27/2008, -3/+19500 people chosen as a representative sample will give a poll result with a 95% confidence rating and a confidence interval of less than +/- 5. Most national polls are done in a sample of around 1000 people.
- CarStan, on 09/27/2008, -1/+17Did i just get DownUnder-Rolled?
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 09/27/2008, -1/+17So because McCain got to answer some questions first that both candidates had similar opinions on, Obama must have lost the debate... On the questions with differing opinions.
- diggproof, on 09/27/2008, -1/+17Hey, if you want to go that route buddy McCain's physical appearance isn't exactly perfect. But this isn't American Idol (although McCain's makeup artist might disagree) and in the end Obama has the better judgement and more sound economic polices. McCain was wrong about Iraq AND what absolutely disgusted me is that he said Obama doesn't want to admit that our troops have been successful in Iraq. Talk about a low blow, what an absolutely disgusting statement.
- digitalagent, on 09/27/2008, -0/+15I have to agree with you. The talking heads mentioned that McCain was an excellent debater and I think he did a decent job (and I am totally in the bag for Obama). But I think it all goes back to what his campaign director said when he suggested that this election is about appearances and not issues. If that is the case, McCain came across as a grumpy old white guy who kind of seemed like a racist. Don't want to bring up that word, but really, I think a lot of minorities were very put off that he couldn't look Obama in the eye. McCain really surprised me though with his ability to recall names and places where in the past he often puts his foot in his mouth (like Biden!). You really can't memorize all that he talked about regarding Eastern Europe. He has experience in foreign policy that is far beyond anything Obama can cite. At the same time Obama has the ability to make it look like experience only counts when you are correct in your judgment. But the pathetic Republican spin that all of Obama's experience is "book learnin" just doesn't fly with the people who watched the debate. They always look like ditto-heads when every last one repeats the same phrase.
Seeing Biden afterward I was even more taken aback at his relaxed ability to shred McCain and the Republicans for their lack of good judgment. When he said something to effect that that he was there with McCain in Georgia, but being there doesn't make him right, you have to give him credit. I couldn't help but wonder what sort of family emergency would come up to keep Palin away from Biden next Thursday. I think the McCain camp either knows that it's political suicide to put her up against Biden or they are as delusional as those who would vote for her and McCain. Her chances of making it to the debate on Thursday have to be less than 50/50 at this point. Just no way in hell they're going to cut their own throats by letting her speak, unfiltered, for an hour. - nmezib, on 09/27/2008, -0/+15yeah, I didn't notice it at first, but then one of my friends (who is a cop) said, "you know, when a guy blinks like that it usually means he's trying to hide something."
Then after that all i could see of McCain is his damn incessant BLINKING! - FreddieD, on 09/27/2008, -0/+15Unless one of them cuts a fart on stage, it's quite common that a debate will be considered a tie by many if not most people.
And at the moment that's fine with me, because historically a tie goes to the guy who has the current momentum, which right now is undeniably Obama. Last night was largely about foreign policy, McCain's bailiwick. All Obama had to do was "hang in there" and it would be considered good. - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -3/+18Frankly, I was surprised that McCain ended up being so completely inept when it came to understanding diplomacy. I thought foreign policy was supposed to be his strong point. Certainly, he understands military strategy, but he seems to have a much weaker grasp of when and when not to use it.
- TrueXtremeIcon, on 09/27/2008, -1/+15Further proof that some people don't know what the ***** a poll is.
- Depthfunction, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14That "you don't understand" line was extremely condescending and it just didn't work. If Obama did nothing else, he showed that he does, indeed, understand foreign policy issues. All McCain could talk about was Iraq, but Obama discussed a wide range of policies.

- JoeMondo, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14Everyone is criticizing McCain for not looking at or addressing Obama.
But that's really not fair. McCain has to overcome decades of feeling smugly superior in order to address someone like a human being. - flashback99, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1440% IS an F, But McCain graduated BOTTOM of his class!! so an F doesnt even cut it. Lol. LukasSmith, I really think you actually support Obama, and pose as a neocon here to make other neocons feel like they're not stupid enough. Keep up the good work!
- eltrev, on 09/27/2008, -3/+17It's always been my experience that people who conjure homosexuality out of the empty void are usually latent / closeted homosexuals, especially when they are neoturds like you (given their history of gay sexual deviance)
