CA Bill Would Force Online Mapping Programs to Blur Images

pcmag.com — A California lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require all virtual mapping programs (i.e Google Earth) to blur out schools, places of worship, government and medical buildings. Street-level imagery would also be banned. Violating companies would face fines of up to $250,000 for every day the illegal imagery was available online.

hollywoodphony, on 03/05/2009, -1/+38I don't think this bill goes far enough. We need to ban all forms of maps. Computer maps, paper maps and especially maps in things like planes and helicopters. Aircraft are often loaded up with highly combustible fuels. They are basically flying bombs. Think how hard it would have been for 9/11 to happen if the terrorists couldn't find the World Trade Center.
pradaaddict, on 03/05/2009, -0/+30I'm sure if a Terrorist was motivated enough to attack one of those buildings they would map it out in person beforehand or even obtain the blueprints from the building permit that City Halls usually keeps and sometimes sells to people. Not seeing where the A/C Units are placed on the roof of a building isn't going to stop them.

Not having Google maps doesn't stop anything...you just buy a paper map...OR...maybe even drive by and check it out. It'd be like banning white envelopes because someone sent anthrax in one. As if nothing else would have worked for that purpose.

all google has to do is have no offices in California making the law moot and they apply EXTRA high quality sat imagery for all of California.

Unfortunately Google and their servers are headquartered in CA, and I don't think they have any plans to move soon. And it doesn't look to me like the law would exempt them if they did. This is just a blatant attempt to censor the internet, like China does.
