This is a largely symbolic move since only Congress can really do anything about this. It's part of the US Government, not just White House, plan to stabilize market jitters about oil commodities.
- HanFastolfe, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1If they (oil companies) don't really want to drill, then why does it matter if more land is opened up to, not, drill?
- shaunindustry, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2It's still not a done deal. Congress must agree to also lift its ban.
- toddcat, on 07/14/2008, -3/+4Right, coz our coastlines aren't sensitive environmental areas or anything. Idiot.
- Micaanab, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Why can't we allow offshore drilling? Couldn't we make restrictions and regulations? Couldn't we demand acreage of land already leased for oil drilling in exchange for offshore drilling?
Couldn't we restrict coast line that would be more greatly impacted by offshore drilling?
I mean we already drill in the gulf. If it means we could possibly cut our dependency of foreign oil, why not?
Couldn't the democrats use offshore drilling to pass certain legislation. Couldn't we use it to stop tax breaks to oil companies.
Someone please explain why this couldn't be done in addition to some democrat goals. Why can't we have the best of both worlds?
I realize the possible environmental implications, but as a means to calling Bush's bluff and possibly exposing Bush/McCain's reasons for offshore drilling, isn't it worth a counter offer?
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+5Well it is about time. This is something that needed to be done 10+ years ago.
- SheilaNoya, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3Bush's father is the one who got the ban put in place after the Santa Barbara oil spill.
So daddy was wrong? - Wundur, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2Oil companies to Bush - "We want unfettered access to drill where we want."
Bush - "You can have it if it makes me look good in giving it to you."
Oil companies - "We will raise prices so high that the public will scream for relief and will accept anything. Then you give us what we want and the gullible public will fall for it like they always do and they will think you actually give a *****."
Bush - "Great strategy and welcome aboard.By the way, don't forget to line up for the Iraq oil as well my fellow elitists." - CLAWC, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1uh-oh. daddy's gonna spank you dubya
- Surferess, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1No it is NOT about time!
- shogan191, on 07/14/2008, -2/+2They are not even drilling in the areas that are already open.
