      we were free, at least as far as i knew. the constitution was such a wise, imperfect as is the testament of man, but solid enough foundation for society to provide a general happiness in living within it. i tasted that ideal of freedom, savored the flavor of liberty. weak or strong, it was real enough to appreciate in my own little world.

      in reviewing the constitution and reading the most basic of our rights, we recognize ourselves as free beings in a world owned by no one. our rights are not favors that can be leased from a group of whispering men. liberty is a birthright. government can only be an open agreement among men, and can only have as much potential for positive effect as the partakers agree to be equal in mutual recognition and protection of liberty.

      we are made from the dust of stars. the dust is not given by committee of man.

      we are animate creatures energized by a star. the energy is not given by committee of man.

      we are piloted by consciousness. the awareness of being is not given by committee of man.

      we are because it is our birthright to be, each of us as equal as the other, each to lead their own life, harm none, and live unharmed, and come together to defend ourselves from harm. if that defense affects a denial to others of the liberty we are seeking to safeguard, it is no longer defense but offense - and that we have already agreed to deny ourselves to take part in, if we have truly recognized universal liberty.

Republican and Democrat alike should join in this task as the Constitution is the very foundation of the nation and must be maintained. The minute we dismiss it, especially those sworn to defend and uphold it, then we live with the real possibility that all our freedoms will be discarded from the right to our spiritual beliefs to freedom of the press and the right to bear arms.
