- Rotzooi, on 12/27/2007, -7/+52Addendum to HeartlandUSA's comment, a fascism checklist; we need:

It's coming...? Nah, it's here. - jftitan, on 12/27/2007, -1/+12Right wing ***** for not checking facts, and seeing the situation from outside the republican box. CHECK

- thawkth, on 12/27/2007, -3/+11Things are going to get interesting.
Sure, they'll probably suck mightily.
But they'll be interesting.
I do have faith. If it comes down to facism vs freedom fighters I don't want to be the facists. They will fail. They always fail.
While they might be a bit bigger and better armed with more inteligence thatn ever before, the rest of us have a few interesting tricks up our sleeves.
When you have kids that can build reactors for science fairs...
Teens that can break into systems easily...
An entire generation of people who have grown up knowing how to access volumes of information beyond comprehension and who are used to it. - BlacklabelSAR, on 12/27/2007, -3/+11So what you are saying is that you don't get the fact that our media is controlled by just a few powerful people, or for some reason, you don't mind that.

the same brainwashed wackjob inbred redneck fools who still think Saddam had WMDs, attacked us on 911 and have picture of Bush on their nightstand are comin' out of the woodwork!! - BlacklabelSAR, on 12/27/2007, -1/+7I remember my grandmother telling me about the Great Depression when I was a kid. I guess those of us that survive the 2nd American Revolution (yes it's started) will tell the tale to our grandchildren.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5A great man once said: The dark night of fascism is always descending upon the United States, but is continually landing on Europe.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 12/27/2007, -2/+6How about the story where much of a nation is in denial?
- CrazedLeper, on 12/27/2007, -4/+8Sorry, you are the idiot. Bush is a moron but he's just a front man. That's where you want the moron in so vast a scheme. You have overlooked the most obvious culprit in this: His daddy. Bush 41 presided over the CIA when Kennedy was assassinated. Don't think that isn't meaningful, the army didn't name an aircraft carrier after him because he's a nice guy.
- morningmatters, on 12/27/2007, -3/+7The rightwing's firm control over the media is hardly regulated to FOXNEWS. CNN's primetime line up includes closet bush-lovers like Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace. Next, let's not forget the printed media such as Wall Street Journal, NYPost, etc. and neocon agents such as Judith Miller and David Brookes of the world who work for the likes of NYTimes and WaPo. Also, the rightwingnuts dominate the radio. Hacks like Lambaugh has millions of listeners daily. When you add all of it up, it's a little surprise that many Americans still believe Iraq was involved with 9/11 today.
- bshock, on 12/27/2007, -4/+8Rotzooi is very thorough, though in my case, he's preaching to the choir.
Some of the problems we have with getting people to understand American fascism today are that (a) corporatist control of the media immediately and almost universally derides any notion that America has sunken into fascism, and (b) modern fascists aren't stupid enough to repeat the terminology and emblems of their failed predecessors.
As laughably stupid as this latter problem -- the problem of labels -- may be, it's still pervasive, and not just with fascism. For example, how many people shun the title of "racist," but still commit frequent and heinous acts of racism? And what about Donald Rumsfeld's fatuous remarks about "civil war" in Iraq not looking like the American civil war? Characteristics and behaviors are far more important than the actual labels, but that doesn't stop people from ignoring these things in favor of a comforting or innocuous label.
Worse, perhaps, fascism can evolve like any other ideology. Not only has it learned to avoid terms like "fascism," it has also developed far more sophisticated techniques. The single, eternal head of state was far too flashy -- better to allow a new puppet to assume the role every four to eight years, and insist that this breaks the fascist mold. Never mind that the real power continues to reside with the corporate interests and wealthy power brokers who install the revolving puppets. - Dweller99, on 12/27/2007, -3/+6"So is it okay to start complaining about the right wing media?"
Only if you find a new boogeyman for the Far Right. The threat of Islamofascists can only be taken so far before they start to sound silly, so they need the Liberal Media to fall back on as an explanation why we are not ALL aware that Islam is the religion of satan and that Islamists eat babies. - CrazedLeper, on 12/27/2007, -2/+5Here it is: BUSH EATS BABIES!
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -3/+5LIBERAL MEDIA MY ASS!
The major media are now in the hands of only SIX corporations.
And those corporations are OVERWHELMINGLY GOP supporters.
Please....learn about the media and corporate consolidation before you gas on about the 'liberal media.'
Ain't no such thing. - inactive, on 12/27/2007, -2/+4You forgot to mention the supression of the military vote in Florida and other states. Besides if people are too STUPID to handle a simple punch ticket, then they shouldn't be allowed to vote in the first place.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -3/+5yeah. corporate fascist media owned and dictated by 5 *****.
- CrazedLeper, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2You forgot "Destroy a building (or two) and say 'they' did it. Whip national fear-based hysteria".
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -3/+5►WHY DO AMERICAN PATRIOTS HATE FOX?
Do you think it is because The CEO, Chairman, and President of FOX News is the Roger Ailes, the political strategist for Presidents Nixon and Reagan and in producing campaign TV commercials for Republican political candidates?
His work for former President Richard M. Nixon was chronicled in the book The Selling of the President: 1968 by Joe McGinniss.
Cons, have you ever even heard the name R-o-g-e-r A-i-l-e-s?!

- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -2/+4FOX "NEWS" = STATE-CONTROLLED PROPAGANDA
Only idiots think this is a news channel. It's carefully staged propaganda, designed to brainwash lower-working class stiffs into towing the party line, even when it is against their best interests. It's written to whip up the passions of the under-educated and is quite effective in doing it. - sodade, on 12/27/2007, -2/+4I lost this faith a long time ago. When it gets down to getting down, most people will be hiding in their holes and blabbing on their neighbor. Any people with real courage will be sucking water in a CIA prison.

http://www.democracynow.org/2007/12/26/fcc_michael ... - inactive, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3I don't reject conservatism because it is followed by conservatives, I reject poor thinking, which conservatives seem especially expert at.
Its a known fact educators are likely to be democrats. Look at the funding. Most unbridled capitalists silver spoon fed and born into money, usually tend to be Republican and are handed down successful business.
Just to clear up your statement - art42, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3"hmm. His "hold" on US media? The last time I checked, his hold on media consisted of Fox news."
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2004/07/b12 ...
"Consider Murdoch's empire: According to Businessweek, "his satellites deliver TV programs in five continents, all but dominating Britain, Italy, and wide swaths of Asia and the Middle East. He publishes 175 newspapers, including the New York Post and The Times of London. In the U.S., he owns the Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Fox Network, and 35 TV stations that reach more than 40% of the country...His cable channels include fast-growing Fox News, and 19 regional sports channels. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered."

- burningmanstan, on 12/27/2007, -2/+3Are you trying to say the communists are still out to get us. OH NOZ!!! the commies are out to get us!!!
- EatingPie, on 12/27/2007, -3/+4Did I say that? No. And hello, I live in San Diego, and have seen the destruction wrought by Telecommunications Act on our local stations (hint: two media companies own everything, and everything sucks). I'll stay with Poor Assumptions for $200, Alex. :p
The article was about the change of hands of this media conglomerate. From one Bush supporter to another (though it only harped on the one Bush supporter). Also, it's only TV stations, not "the media" at large. No newspapers, or radio stations, AFAIK. The Chicago Tribune Company, for example, still owns the LA Times.
Finally, the article only talked about ONE INVESTOR in the group that bought the stations. How many other investors are there? What are their political affiliations? Who makes the decisions in the conglomerate?
As I said, lots of "sky is falling," and based on the fact that one investor in the purchasing conglomerate went to college with Bush.

- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2The right wing dominates talk for the same reason Fox news kicks ass in the ratings war, the listeners on the right, outnumber the left. (Failure of ERROR America radio). However the major networks still lean far left, as do most newspapers. Yes Cnn has Glenn Beck, 1 they are trying to pay the bills, realize what people want to hear, follow him with leftist propaganda, hoping many will not change teh channel.
- nimbleprune, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1oh I love the talk of leftist revolution...considering the only people in support of guns...most of the people with military training and people that are willing to fight wars are conservative...just thought I would point that out....a violent revolution would be stupid.
- jhails, on 12/27/2007, -2/+3An extremely troubling time for the average american. Well said.

Maybe US citizens should, tongue-in-cheek, refer to their homeland as The Fatherland rather than The Land of the Free -- it is starting to seem a little more appropriate. - justo, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1not me, "nature finds a way". nations are the new organisms trying to find "a way". just relax, have hope, and treat those around you with compassion. happy winter season. the brotherhood of people can extend to a brotherhood of nations.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1The only high treason is in the actions of the NYT and the Dems in congress and the Senate.
Unemployment has on average been lower than under Clinton, excepting MI where I see the results of a 2 term Dem Gov.
Yes deficits are higher, Bush had to rebuild the Military that Clinton disbanded and destroyed.
The vast majority killed are dying in terrorist attacks on civilians, our guys live under rules of engagement that place their own lives in danger, to limit civilian deaths.
Yes we are at war, the islamofascists declared war on us 30 years ago, we finally decided to fight back.
I thought Bush implemented tax Cuts?
A decrease in amount of increase proposed is not a cut.
Again the lib complaint is that Bush hasn't raised taxes enough.
The only threat to childrens future is that they may have to prurchase prayer rugs.
We are not living in a POLICE state. The real loss of freedom is due to the PC device of denying the enemy has a face. Instead of targeting our enforcement efforts on those most likely to be a threat, we instead assume everyone is guilty til proven innocent. Why? because we hogtie our police and inteligence agencies with worries of profiling, Lawsuits when terrorists stage a mock attack, to purposely test security protocols.
The only respect we have lost around the world is from the socialists and radical Islamists. The new president of France is a prime example, he had nothing but praise for the United States and our troops. There are more DEAD terrorists everyday.
Free to hide in a cave and make videos every 6 months.
I dead American is too many, however more troops died under Clintons"peacetime" than have died in Iraq.
The corruption theories are tiring, How about the Billions missing in Dem controlled Louisiana?
3.12 gallon here.
I have lost no rights, name one you have lost? The govt has been monitering communications for years, they don't care about your phone sex(unless it is with a 12 yr old, is that your worry).
The soldiers would have what they need if Congress would get out of the way. Military funding bills should not be vehicles for Congressional pork.
The draft hasn't been implemented or seriously discussed in the REAL world. (yes Dem Conyers and Rangel, they are leftie kooks).
The environment is not destroyed, or heading that way, GWism is the latest "the sky is falling theory from the New ice age/overpopulation/radiation/ozone depletion/famine/drought " theory of the world is going to end in ten years nutcases that have been around since the beginning of the cold war.
Yes, using women and children in mosques as human shields, beheading journalists, suicide bombs etc are war crimes, quit fighting to get them lawyers. Get out of the way and let the marines do their job.
Nafta, signed by Clinton is a failure.
And I will refrain from calling you names, As I graduated long before even Bushes' daddy was in office. Funding for education is far above what it was when I was in school yet still produces kool-aid drinkers like you. - technoredneck, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Lots of checking? Check!
