Bush Trampled on Fundamental Rights in the Name of National Security
reuters.com — A judicial branch has told the administration that it may not trample on fundamental rights in the name of national security. President Bush's broad assertions of power in his war on terrorism are under assault by U.S. judges who have rejected his indefinite imprisonment of enemy combatants and the domestic spying program.

Since Bush's policies don't work, it is time to do a complete turn around--abolish the Patriot Act, the Military Act, the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive (which gives the president control of all three branches of government during a catastrophic emergency) and every other act that gives government unchecked powers to spy on the American people, and arrest, detain and torture them.
And don't forget--restore habeas corpus now. Congress never declared war and there was no reason to suspend it, and without it we the people are not safe from potential government abuse.- dukeeeey, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22plans to take over in an 'emergency' and put everyone in concentration camps ..

Am I the only one to interpret this to mean that if Bush's policies did work, we wouldn't be trying to restore our freedoms? That's pretty scary when you think about it. Back when these laws were being passed, there wasn't much opposition and Bush could do no wrong. Now that the political climate has changed, and it's become politically safe for judges and politicians to voice their opposition, the government is conveniently starting to make thing right again.

Why don't you tell that to an Iraqi? This statement is nonsense. Security is an essential component of liberty. That is what separates a libertarian from an anarchist. Libertarians believe the govt. should run a police force and court system to protect individual rights. If you can't leave your house because you are afraid of being shot, you do not have liberty to begin with. - Lewie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@bonhoeffer

Things are being set up a bit at a time. For what, only Bush and Darth Cheney know for sure but I'd bet money that one day, Americans will suddenly realize they've been doing a goatse puzzle all along and it'll be too late to turn back the pages. For many Americans, they'll look right at the completed goatse puzzle and either refuse to believe it's what they're seeing or refuse to believe they were given a goatse puzzle in the first place and call it tasteful. Most people will be outraged that they were conned into it. - twertyto, on 10/11/2007, -18/+7The comparisons of George W. I'm pretty sure we're all damn well aware of it by now... have been ever since the "Patriot Act"- mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's news because the courts are finally catching on to what's going on. Bush has made the classic mistake... telling the Federal court they have no say. The court has all the power in this situation.. they can simply shut down until the President complies with their ruling. Bush's position of completely removing the US courts from 5 year long cases that are more criminal than military is making the judges want their say on the matter. After all, even the US military court is subordinate to the Federal courts when the Federal courts feel like it, the executive branch can't have it's own system with no rules or accountability. that's just stupid.

- LadyKareenVor, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3Hitler? My God. Try Abraham Lincoln. Who did all the same things. 'Cept Abe is loved by everyone. He sent our country further toward a dictatorship than any other president ever has. Suspension of the Bill of Rights, arresting any newspapers that disagreed with him. We're all a little spoiled with Bush. Stop complaining. We got through Lincoln, the US'll be perfectly fine after Bush.
- 4degrees, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15the main difference between the two, is that Lincoln did what he did to stop the country from tearing itself apart and, that danger was clear and present to just about every citizen. Bush, on the other hand, is doing what he is doing to line his and others pockets with money. In this case the country is not about to tear itself apart, he is trying to tear apart other countries. In addition, the danger is NOT clear to the citizens and they also disapprove of how the whole debacle is being handled. So, the parallels between Bush and Lincoln end with the fact that they both are republicans, and thats even questionable because republicans then are VERY different than republicans now.
- bonhoeffer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2The danger is very clear and present to New Yorkers. I just spent a week among them.
- wakananda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4After Abe, things were changed BECAUSE people complained, long and loudly. I'm disgusted with these authoritarian stooges who post here, saying "shut up, stop complaining (i.e. disagreeing with my leader/cult programmer); everything is under control. If you want to change something, vote, but stop complaining." A huge part of the neofascist program in America is not only stifling but demonizing free speech. I am OVER being threatened and called a traitor, or being told to stfu by unstable follower-personalities or armchair warriors with their anuses clenched in terror over the horrors of Islam. They have plunged the dollar into the trash bin with their billion-a-day foreign adventures, and enriched multinational corporations with ZERO allegiance to the American people. They have enabled the hostile takeover and liquidation - the deliberate destruction - of the USA, and it's immanent replacement with an anti-democratic "North American Union." These followers and shills, who have stolen the Republican Party and inverted conservative ideals, are TRAITORS to the American system of Constitutional government and the American People. Speaking up, challenging abuse of power, championing the US Constitution in the face of pirates who pillage and plunder while wrapped in OUR flag - this is the right and the DUTY of a real American Citizen and patriot.

- twertyto, on 10/11/2007, -18/+6More people's lives have been saved by Bush's policies than people who have had their fundamental rights "trampled on". Mission accomplished.
- tidu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12It's called principle. More importantly, those that our country was founded on.
And rather than make up for the wrongs we have done in the middle east (dating back to the 50's) Bush's policies intrude more by sending troops to Iraq, which creates even more anti-american sentiment. This increases the probability of another attack, which limits more of our freedoms. It'll keep going until we get some change.
If you really feel scared about terrorist attacks, you have some problems. Instead of spending billions out there in the middle east, we could be spending money on law enforcement, disaster relief, medical research, etc. You're more likely to die from a tornado, drive-by, cancer, car accident, aids, murderer, etc than a terrorist. - pushmouse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1So how many Iraqi and US soldiers lives has he saved since the beginning of his illegal war

"You are enslaved by the rich, you just don't feel it"
"You are trampled by the all powerful regime, you just aren't aware of it."

- wakananda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2With the Patriot Act (drafted before the 9/11 attacks and rammed through Congress during an anthrax attack -on democratic party targets- that remains a mystery) and the Military Commissions Act, Bush has fullfilled the Neocon doctrine of a "unitary executive" by claiming every power of a dictator, including the right to declare ANY US CITIZEN beyond the protection of the law; to abduct them; to torture them; to hold them - forever, if he chooses - without trial, and without access to a lawyer or indeed any communication with the outside world. In Bush's "signing statements" he has expressly declared himself -the executive- above the laws he signs. Bohica (or some other neofascist knob-polisher) might say "go back to sleep, this doesn't affect you." By that logic, we ought not to question the dismantling of our Constitutional Republic, or the dragging away of our neighbors and friends, until the agents of occupational government are at OUR door, dragging US away. These dictatorial powers of the Executive are a threat to the American System of Government and the American People. They will be abused. And the longer we wait to correct the situation, the more difficult that correction will be.
