The person he's referring to is White House Head Chef Cristeta Comerford, a well-known chef who was the first woman and first minority to fill the position. She is a naturalized citizen born in the Philippines.
She's at the top of her game, has broken through a lot of barriers, and has daily contact with the Idiot-in-Chief. It would have been odd not to mention her.
Isn't there plenty on Bush already without twisting things around, and implying that an extremely talented chef is just "kitchen staff" for the purpose of scoring a few political points? Or didn't you know that's who he was talking about, and you just assumed the Filipinos were waiters and pot washers?

You have to understand that hired help in the Philippines are not a subjugated race; it is quite common for the middle class to have maids. So it implies that Filipinos are poor and have to work in the service industry, but saying Filipinos make great cooks does not have the "slaves" connotation to it at all.

It was a bad and lame joke, i'll agree, but it's not like he said "You people only amount to being great kitchen staff" or "you people are only good at cleaning the house". I'm actually fortunate that I did not have to experience that hard life that many people endure. You have to remember that the philippines is not that rich of a country and the poor over there are REAL POOR, so getting a job outside of the P.I. is usually a good thing.
IMO it's no different then our view of a British nanny, as we all know British people aren't only good at being nannies for rich white families.
