Bush makes me sick. - Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Hey, DCM - you're absolutely right: we do have the priveledge of speaking our minds about the government.
The only thing that makes this different from the traditional American right of Free Speech is that our Vice-President accuses us of aiding Al-Queada when we use it...and of course the fact that we're being put on FBI watchlists for having dangerously oppositional opinions. You're right, we are lucky. But that doesn't mean we ignore what's happening around us. Real patriots fight for their country and their people, not their administration. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35unbeatable: while you are correct, we all actually lose.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Is anyone else tired of the way Bush acts like we're the stupid ones who just don't get it? We get what you're trying to say Bush. You don't need to bring a bunch of leaders in to stand behind you while you talk. We really honestly understand what you're saying. It's not that we have no idea what you're talking about, it's that we think you have no idea what you're talking about.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30You know, if he stopped making speeches, people might not have such a low opinion of his intelligence. I don't know about you guys, but every time he talks.....

Or how about the war hero accused of being a traitor for voicing conspiracy theories on 9/11? Or the Arab-American citizens refused re-entry to the country because a cousin of theirs had been identified as a terror suspect? And again, how about our VP telling voters that their democratic choice was wrong, because they didn't want to vote for an obviously bought-out Lieberman? Just in case you didn't realize, the state of our country doesn't alter overnight - change happens subversively...in fact, the more quietly, the better.
Things like this do not infer good things for our future if we continue on this way. Are you going to need an FBI-operated camera mounted in your living-room before you'll put 2 & 2 together? - Phr00t, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25I believe the "war on terror" now defines Bush as an enemy. Bush loves to spread fear and use it to his advantage just as much as "traditional" terrorists do.
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27@DCMH.
he didnt say anything bad about the US. just about its inept leader. i think the US is great. or.. could be great again in the future if our current leaders started gaving a flying ***** about the constitution. or how the laws might apply to them. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"People like you make me sick. Thankfully for you, the U.S. government doesn't deal with political dissidents the way other many other countries do. The fact you have a voice says something about the U.S. is good."
The fact that it could be worse doesn't change the fact that it could and should be much, much better. And before you accuse me of political bias, I'm a centrist/populist, not a liberal. - Phr00t, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18However, there is a "base" that eats his speaches right up. They love the stuff he says and think: "Oh Bush, thank you for making me feel so protected! You are the only one I trust to save me from those evil evil terrorists."
How can we reach those people? - xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"People like you make me sick. Thankfully for you, the U.S. government doesn't deal with political dissidents the way other many other countries do. The fact you have a voice says something about the U.S. is good."
I guess to people like this DCMacHead, If you say something negative toward's a (republican) president, then your basically an anti-American commie pinko liberal treasonous scumbag.
People (on both sides) need to grow up. - xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"I've got no problem when people say whatever they want. I DO have a problem when current political leaders openly criticize the President and former Presidents openly criticize the President. Politics stop at the water's edge--we're all Americans (that's an old American saying, for all you non-American Diggers)."
Why would you have a problem with political leaders that openly criticize the sitting president? If there are valid grievances with a president's policy, then I expect elected representatives and political leaders to air those grievances in the open. To confront leaders when they are wrong is every American's patriotic duty. - berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16in my view the terrorist have already won. bigtime. sure whatever we are still 'waging the war' but the fact that so many of our liberties are being threatened by our own politicians. the fact that so many americans daily lives have been interrupted indirectly by the actions of so few.
to put it into perspective i think of the number of people killed on our soil (even include spain, england, etc).. now compare that against and the number of civilians killed in this iraqi war. the tens if not hundreds of billions spent on this war. and the rest of the ***** that goes with. its just not worth it. as horrible as this sounds 3k people dying 5 years ago is not worth the ***** this country has been through since then. a terrorists goal is not the result of the act itself. but the result of the TERROR of the people and the government afterwards. to disrupt. and sure measures need to be taken. and maybe there have been more than a dozen terrorist plots on equal scale foiled by this administration that the american public was not made aware of. but i somehow doubt it.
maybe im out of line here.
maybe im just stating the obvious. a nieve 20something that doesnt do enough research to be forming an opinion.
but i liken it to using a sledge hammer to squash a fly. an invisible fly with dynamate strapped to its chest.
if they call for a draft i will definitely be outta here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Bush can't even find enough support in this country to cast a friendly audience so he's importing them from other countries. Bush administration speeches are already like late night infomercials. Pretty soon they're going to have to hire actors to play supporters.
The 30% of the country who still supports that moron are lost to us. Better if we could carve off a chunk of the country and give them their own place to live. We could merge Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, N/S Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas and call it Neoconistan. Then we could lament the right wingers coming across the border to take jobs the rest of us don't want because 5 people would control all the wealth in their country and no one would have health insurance. It wouldn't matter if they did because in Neoconistan treating disease would be illegal because illness is a curse from God to strike down those ungodly women walking around outside not wearing their Christian burka. There would be illegal Neocons hanging out at Home Depot, washing dishes at Denny's, and reporting for Fox News. Of course, we'd have to sign a protective pact with Canada to keep them from invading that country to try and take their oil. - Phr00t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ jimmygoon
Apparently those people have alot of power in America... as seen in the upcoming elections, it doesn't look like Democrats have a big lead:
http://www.electionprojection.com/elections2006.html#senate
But then it is arguable how much power /any/ of us "voters" have nowadays... :( - airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Sigh.
One of the few things that gives me any hope anymore
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/01/bush_countdown.html
I just hope everything isn't completely shot to hell by then. - unbeatablpab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9DCMac, im sure all of us feel very sorry for the death of that colleague's brother. However, that doest mean that we should all lock and load and kill the first Muslim we see. Maybe you didn't watch the news enough because you were too busy reading the Koran (and yes I have read it as well, as has my little brother...no we're not muslim, im an atheist and proud of it) but the muslims that caused 9/11 we'ren't your average everyday muslims. They were crazy-in-da-coconut extremist muslims that thought that that was the only way to gain salvation becuase thats what other extremists told them to brainwash them when they were children. I know this because I have muslim friends, i have even been to Iraq (part of an "ancient civilizations" tour i did with my parents, we're fond of traveling) and spoken to the locals and every one of them told me that they dont agree with the extremists and have been trying to get rid of their extreme ideologies for quite some time now. They also told me that you are not supposed to take the lessons and quotes form the Koran literally, but follow its moral values, but the extremists do so so they can have proof to further brainwash their followers.
- unbeatablpab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9lol you mean the words "freedom" and "terror" like every 10 seconds >.

- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@DCMacHead,
Hmm...did you really read it? I always hear about the similarities between the Koran and the Holy Bible. They both teach about love and peace. heck, many people in the Bible are in the Koran.
I guess my question should really be...have you read The Bible? - walkerblackwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In the last days of G. Tenet's reign over the CIA they got a pre-election video from Bin-Laden. He was all about how good the democratic party was, etc, etc. The edited version reached the masses and was cut so the message didn't get out. What was the message? Bin-Laden really really wanted Bush to be re-elected. After all. You have no power if you can't use that power against a distant foe that you can never stop. Both these guys need each-other way bad. They will stop at nothing to justify their actions in each-other's shadow. Nothing good comes of these types of bonds. Bush's media research is no surprise. Anyone grasping for power must do anything possible to, namely, grasp for power.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Well, fist off he's saying war is THE solution to terrorism, that's pretty dumbed down. Then there's this whole domino effect, for both democracy an Islamic extremism. It wasn't true with Vietnam and the cold war, it isn't true now, but it is easy to say.
- unbeatablpab, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yep, good thing I have family in Spain. Cuz if there's a draft, im taking the first plane, so they better start warming my seat, cuz if Bush keeps getting his way, u know a draft is next...
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ucytheynv
true i havent yet felt the direct consequence of legislation passed because of this war on terror. but i have read the patriot act (which is just one example). there is no doubt it is unconstitutional. the rights garaunteed to me as an american citizen are slowly being thrown down the *****. all im saying is that we had better watch our asses. or soon the constitution wont be worth the paper its written on. - unbeatablpab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5o and by they way...the brother that died in the towers, is just more proof that Bush is a moron because the Gov. knew that something bad was about to go down, but Bush (as the total giant-eared retard he is didn't feel like raising security and awareness. That brother's death could have been prevented if we had a more competent leader who doesnt spend his time reading 1st grade books about a little goat instead of dealing with the more pressing matters at hand...
- goldenbb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Whether or not there are terrorists out there is beside the point. Of course there are and there always will be! But nothing the feds are doing or have done is going to change that one bit--US foreign policy is a train wreck.
- kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5After the hugely successful military intervention in Iraq its time for Bush and his toys to move on.
When are the next elections in the US? Hope this time people actually VOTE. - mixelplfft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you said it yourself...."the tens if not hundreds of billions spent on this war." - imagine how profitable it must be for the companies that provide the tools for war. i'd be a terrorist too if some country and it's ignorant leader came stomping in my front yard with NO RESPECT and FOR THE WRONG REASONS.
it'd be brilliant if more of the soldiers woke up like this guy:

ps: there is no war on terror...just like the war on drugs - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Reminds me of privatizing social security, every time he talked about it, support went down.
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The mid-term Congressional elections are in November of this year, which will be for Senate and House seats. Right now, the conventional wisdom is that Republicans will lose control of the House of Representatives and maintain control of the Senate.
The next Presidential election is in 2008. The last election had very high turnout, too (though it is, ironically, lower than turnout in other democracies). - Phr00t, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Why hire actors when you can just use your own troops as puppets?
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=1210978 - goldenbb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does anybody listen to the president talk anymore? It's all pretty much a pack of lies, so why bother?
I want nothing from the US Federal Government except to be free of it. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I hear what you're saying. Hell, the terrorists may have not won on 9/11... but they sure as hell won the day we passed the (***** I'm not a) Patriot Act"
Ummm... the patriot act was mostly a response to 9/11, so they did actually 'win' on 9/11. Our politicians are so ***** stupid...makes me want to puke - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2from your link:
It's only 869 days, 21 hours, 1 minutes, and 25 seconds until George W. Bush is no longer President of the United States.
869 DAYS? oh damn....... sometimes don't you wish you could just go to sleep for a good long time? like 868 days? (w/o the whole ageing thing) - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A man told his grandson: "A terrible fight is going on inside me -- a fight between two wolves. One is evil, and represents hate, anger, arrogance, intolerance, and superiority . The other is good, and represents joy, peace, love, tolerance, understanding, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, and compassion. This same fight is going on inside you, inside every other person too."

There are offensive quotes that can be lifted from the Bible, as I clearly stated. The key difference, overlooked by useful idiots like yourself, is that quite a few Muslims appear to read the Koran quite literally AND ACT ON IT. Ask the childlren in Belsan. Ask the Indians who were riding the train on 7/11. Ask the folks on the buses in London on 7/7. Ask the Spaniards riding the train on 5/11. Ask the folks of NY about 9/11. Ask the Buddhist monks that are shot on a daily basis in Southern Thailand.
What's most astonishing is that the first thing so-called Muslim "moderates" do is either point the finger at the victim saying it's the victim's fault or chalk it up to a "few bad apples". I find it humorous that you question my intelligence when it seems you're the one who's got trouble recognizing patterns. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dcmachead, You are confusing extremists with Islam. Islam exists very peacefully around the world. Indonesia is the largest Islamic state. It's a very peaceful nation. You sound just like the jihadists, who say death to all Christianity, except you say death to Islam. I think this is an indication that you have a paranoid fear of Islam and hysteria rules your thinking when it comes to foreign policy.
Now, your argument is based on a false dilemma ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_dilemma ). There is more than one way to deal with terrorism. Opposition to Bush is not pro-terrorism. I would hazard a guess to think jihad extremists also think that those who disagree with them are the enemy. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@alien
By then we will be bombing Iran. God I hope I'm wrong. But we ordered 45,000 PGMs, and I think Dubya plans to be the one to use them. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"quite a few...ACT ON IT" Is that the best you can muster? At earlier points in recent history, you will find there is no such thing as Islamic terror. It is a convenient umbrella definition, describing terrorist attacks sourced to Islamic countries. How much of it is actually RELIGIOUS? How much of it is political or a response to, lets say, STATE terror. How much of it is due to ignorance, non-education and poverty? How much is it enflamed and seeded by the United States and Israel?
The United States supported Saddam Hussein in prior decades, around the times he actually was at his most brutal and in the process of poisoning marsh arabs and kurds (irony, huh? What a bad guy. So bad that he was SUPPORTED). The United States supported and funded the Taliban against the Soviet Union, solidifying the Taliban's hold on the country in the following decades. The United States funded, what by today's definition, are terrorists in South American countries not politically aligned with the United States. The British and the UN created Israel. Israel has employed state terror on Palestinians for decades. So you can see there is plenty of fuel that has enflamed terrorism in the middle east. This is ignoring poverty and other cultural factors.
Your only example is al-Qaeda (and it's affiliates presumably) and some Buddhist monk victims. That is pathetic. You ignore all other instances of terrorism in the world and recent history, to make it seem like Islamic terror is the only form of terrorism. It one of a myriad. Prior to last century it did not exist.
"What's most astonishing is that the first thing so-called Muslim "moderates" do is either point the finger at the victim saying it's the victim's fault or chalk it up to a "few bad apples"."
Americans say this whenever a few soldiers commit war crimes in Iraq on innocent families. Americans are generally silent on US historical actions (some of which are listed above). Similarly they support and even commend Israeli war crimes against palestinians.
I find it humorous that you question my intelligence when it seems you're the one who's got trouble recognizing patterns."
The recognizing patterns alright. At least I frame my questions broadly so as to include historical information and semantics.
"Mainstream believers consider these acts to be egregious violations of the religion's ethics.
