- tidu, on 11/03/2007, -7/+57"current institutions and statutes are not well suited to even the limited task of supplementing . . . a military effort to combat Islamic terrorism."
~Michael Mukasey, 8/22/2007
More of the ***** same. - swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35Mukasey works for Giuliani's presidential campaign. He swore in Giuliani as mayor of new york in a private ceremony...at his (Mukasey's) NY apartment.
- theshizzler, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31Hopefully this guy will be able to recall more than his name.
- ChupaCadabra, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Don't be surprised when next year this guy does whatever it takes to get Giuliani elected.
- EntropyMan, on 11/03/2007, -6/+21Four More Wars!!!
- swrostmore, on 11/03/2007, -0/+11If you read the entire WSJ op ed where that quote originates, Mukasey advocates the creation of a "national security court" that would handle terrorism and surveillance cases in secret. He is much more likely to get this done as AG than he was as a judge.
- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -10/+21Pres Bush.......4 MORE YEARS!!!!
- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Why isn't this bothering people? How can a judge work for a presidential campaign? How can he be fair? Oh this is so frustrating.
- interval, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9He wasn't working for a presidential campaign _while_ he was a judge. Only after he retired.
- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12ppffftttt, mines worse
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Bush's family is from CT. He went to school in Mass and then college at Yale (back to CT). He is not, nor ever was, from the south. The Marlboro man image was a tool to get elected just like it was used to sell cigarettes.
- Dustin00, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9There are so many holes in this administration, it's going to spend the rest of its lame duck term just placing people in front of congress for hearings.
And ya gotta wonder about the people that say "sure, I'll join this hated group for the last remaining months" -- it's like people volunteering to jump back on the Titanic. - swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6...because everyone knows Harry Reid's word is LAW to all liberals. Forgive me if I'd rather not see anyone affiliated with the Giuliani campaign as attorney general. I thought the idea was to get someone who ISNT politicizing.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Such conflicts of interest aren't rare. For instance, in the 2004 election the same man running the elections in Ohio was also chief of the Republican campaign in Ohio. A man by the name of Ken Blackwell. And yes he was a sleezy SOB.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Blackwell - cryptomystic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6He'll suck.
Everyone Bush appoints into office is either an incompetent like himself or a warmongering neocon like Cheney. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Bush worried about his Southern base. Hahaha.
He USED the south to get elected. He doesn't care NOW. - Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And Bush is concerned about his 'Southern Base' why? It's not like he's headed for re-election.
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5WTF are you talking about?
- EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's been confirmed. Bush didn't look too happy about it either.
- saska, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If you even remotely assume that lukewarm Democrat support for Mukasey makes him acceptable, you need to read this piece from the Wall Street Journal in 2004: http://www.opinionjournal.com/forms/printThis.html?id=110005059
In it, among other things, he opines that the Constitution did not include a Bill of Rights when it was drafted because it was not the founders' intention to give the people a right to consider themselves as important as the government. He essentially dismisses the importance of individual liberties in the name of protecting the nation as an entity. The piece is full of what I like to call "preacher arguments" -- the invocation of fear and the claim that atrocities could have been avoided if only we had given up more of our liberties sooner. Further, he is full of two-wrongs-make-a-right logic, including the claim that we support terrorists if we question whether revoking liberties is worth greater security.
Alberto Gonzales was a bumbling yes-man whose greatest failing was his inability to say no to the president. Mukasey has an agenda of his own that is as bad as, or worse than, the Bush administration's. - EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6ppffffftt, mine is funnier. But Thcobbs is generally humor impaired anyway. The joke wasn't for him.
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Forgive me, but I'm going to wait for a real poll that's at least vaguely scientific.
- drmobutu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's pronounced: Mucousy
- code2joy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4hope he's better than the last two.
bush picked him, though... so i'm not holding my breath. - thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Thanks!
- freezeout, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3says here he's a judicial adviser to Rudy Giuliani, so you know what that means - more spying and torture for everyone! yay!
- LastVisibleDog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I think Hillary Clinton holds the record for saying "I don't recall" during congressional testimony
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And yet you manage to surpass them.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2According to his wiki, Mukasey worked with Giuliani as a prosecutor in the 70's, and his son now works at Giuliani's firm. If you look at his opinions on terrorism and the Patriot Act it's pretty clear what kind of bootlicker he'll be.
- Dewhead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do you all realize that Chuck Schumer and other democrats really pushed for this guy for the Supreme Court?
http://bench.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MjY2MDQ0ZjdkMDdkMDJiOWIzNjUxNDc5OWY2OTRkZTE= - mojibyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm certain he is just another neo-con lacky...chomping at the bit to take more of your freedoms and liberties just like the last idiot who held the position...can u trust anyone that Bush admires and chooses for any position.
- dcbebop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4He works for Giuliani's campaign AND is Attorney General, aka, Chief Cop. I smell something fishy going on.
- theinternot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Harry Reid is as big a ***** as any redneck republican.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2don't you think an AG should have an impeccable resume?
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2brufleth, you picked the worst (or best) possible example of this. Hopefully it is rare. Blackwell (and Petro) basically killed every investigation into voting impropriety in Ohio in 2004.
- blaze4metal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Exactly. All that talk about farms subsidies? *****. The fact that everyone fell for it is what concerns me.
- ptsd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5im sorry but ***** NO, this is the man who labeled a united states citizen a ***** enemy combatant, opening the door for any u.s. citizen to have all their liberty, all their freedom stripped away from them at the behest of the administration...
jesus schumer, ARE YOU ***** KIDDING?!, this man doesnt deserve to live inside the u.s. let alone be its u.s attorney ***** general
hes was also judged over the larry silverstein wtc insurance payout. im sorry but theres still way to many unanswered questions around that to even begin to make this man an acceptable nominee for u.s. attorney general. - sqrt7744, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2because this is America and white Christians are still the majority... simple case of probability. Jews *are* disproportionately represented in the government and media.
- way2muchsense, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, I just hope the Judiciary Committee is more concerned about his prior record than with promises (please lie to us) to not let some otherwise deal-breaking personal attribute interfere with his judgement.
- sqrt7744, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dear God, please keep Mukasey away from our already besieged freedoms, Amen.
- marcomc2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Yes. This is bad.
I know it may seem like Ive been spamming around digg for the last two weeks, saying the same thing, but here I go again:
Please watch this. All of you, I beg you. Please, please, please, watch this from beginning to end, without interruptions, and when you are done, pass it around to everyone you know, because all of us need to care and do something: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6495462761605341661 - swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3what became, after Sept. 11, 2001, principally
- Wargalas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well it seems to be the law when it comes to any other topic (Iraq, healthcare, etc), so why not this?
- EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly. It's totally unlike Bush to give Dems what they want. That's why I think something's up, like last spring's recess appointment switcheroo, where Bush pulled the nomination right before a "no" vote, only to recess appoint the next weekend.
- symbals, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which specializes in constitutional law, today commended President Bush’s nomination of former U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mukasey as U.S. Attorney General.
http://www.demossnewspond.com/aclj/releases/2007Releases/MukaseyNomination091707.htm - ChuyMatt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why are there so many white people in the cabinet positions? Or Christians?!
You are sounding awfully close to a bigot.
Judge people by their actions, not their linage. - carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or worse still, an imcompetent warmonger.
- didiman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1go cry to your mommy
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why are there so many Jewish people in cabinet positions in every single presidency? Seems like every non-supreme court nominee Bush has made was Jewish, now Mukasey who is also Jewish.
- random19, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That terrifies me.
