- TheJimid, on 04/07/2009, -4/+59Depressing, America has 25% of the world's prisoners but the people who do this BS walk free.
- digg4peace, on 04/07/2009, -5/+42Bring on the war Crimes trials already!
- Frankyfan3, on 04/07/2009, -2/+36Anyone ever seen the movie Brazil?
- Rothbardosaurus, on 04/07/2009, -3/+23Digg me down if you want, but this glaring fact remains: The President could have ended the war(s), the torture, the overreach of executive power, and the illegal incarcerations in his first five minutes in office, but he didn't, and still hasn't, except for a few small gestures for the sake of PR.
He's either a huge political wuss, or something more sinister. Either way, he's not who the voters thought he was. - Modiga, on 04/07/2009, -0/+16Define safer. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ ... the USA's intentional homicide rate is over twice that of the UK's.
- hfactor, on 04/07/2009, -0/+15Facts like that the homicide rate in the US has been three to four times as high as in the UK over the last couple years (and even higher in comparison to e.g. Germany, Switzerland etc.)?
- SpinningHead, on 04/07/2009, -1/+15We have the highest proportional incarceration rate too.
- Rothbardosaurus, on 04/07/2009, -23/+37What's even sadder is that so many voters put all their faith in an establishment puppet to change these things.
He didn't end the GWOT, he renamed it.
He didn't close Gitmo, he moved it.
He didn't stop the warmongering, he just de-politicized it.
He certainly isn't saving the economy, but simply helping the globalist bankers take over. - bigp3rm, on 04/07/2009, -2/+15You are a *****.
- manosinistra, on 04/07/2009, -5/+17No cause, no ideal, no nationality or cultural identity can justify torture.
Practice of torture is the best possible means to lower humanity to beastly levels, notwithstanding that no other species on this planet practices torture on its own.
Obama is far more courageous than any war-monger, he has the courage of humility and open ears.
This is no guarantee for success, but at long last we have a man in power that is keeping his eyes on the long term, and not just his personal and his friend's short-term financial interests.
Bush and Cheney & Co. have done more to weaken America than anyone else in the rest of the world.
When you end up getting doctors practicing torture, its high time to worry about collective reponsibilities involved in letting things slip so far, so long... - mithrasinvictus, on 04/07/2009, -0/+12These doctors did, the good kind took the Hippocratic oath.
- 1x253, on 04/07/2009, -1/+13We shouldn't torture anybody. Aside from being against everything America ever stood for previously, it makes us the evil empire. We should be setting higher standards for mutual respect and decency. Instead we do the opposite. This destroys our credibility in the international community.
Now even our allies hate us. That's a huge diplomatic loss, because the day we need friends we'll wish our presidential administrations had not been such douchebags. - Rothbardosaurus, on 04/07/2009, -2/+12The economy is not the President's responsibility. The only thing he should be doing to "fix" it should be pushing to end the federal market interventions that caused the problem in the first place.
Crimes of the executive branch *are* the President's responsibility. And no, getting out of the wars and ending the torture would not take "years." Loading the soldiers and guns onto buses and trucks, driving them to Kuwait, and flying home from there shouldn't take much longer than the length of time he's already been in office. Instead he's keeping 50,000 troops there indefinitely, with an Occupation Capitol bigger than the Vatican. And possibly prepping for a Pakistan invasion. Putting an unconditional stop to the torture is as easy as an executive order. The same goes for repealing the Bush executive order power grabs.
This notion that "oh, he hasn't gotten to do all those awesome things because he's so busy saving us from the free market" makes me want to scream. No crisis is big enough to justify tyranny. - booyahbitch, on 04/07/2009, -10/+20This guy... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Mengele was a war criminal for such atrocities. Do you suppose we should be at a minimum be investigating the Bush Administration for this *****?!?
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -5/+15Pardon me if I don't take the testimony of 14 terrorists as the complete truth.
- Chrysalii, on 04/07/2009, -2/+12so it would be low...if there were only 3 countries.
Last time I checked my globe, there were more than 3. - edrodgers731, on 04/07/2009, -2/+11Ya think?
The great manipulator. - Rothbardosaurus, on 04/07/2009, -1/+10The messiah persona attributed to Obama was of his own crafting, and way too many (young) voters were sucked in by the sexy marketing. Yes. They thought he could walk on water.
It doesn't take godlike powers, though, to say, "the troops will be home in 3 months, anyone caught torturing gets tried for treason, and Presidential Directive 51 is hereby repealed."
That could have been in his inaugural speech. And it would have been at least an affirmation of what we'd been hoping for by voting him in. Instead, PD51 has been removed as a political issue, his "closing" of Gitmo was only a PR stunt where in 1 year the prisoners will get shuffled around, and the Global War on Everyone has just been re-branded as "global contingency operations."
I'm not down on him because he doesn't walk on water. I'm trying to expose the fact that he's just another empty suit like Bush. The same criminals are still running the show. The fires were started long before the Republicans had control of the Capitol. The two parties are just taking turns pouring gas on it. - sinuegoist, on 04/07/2009, -4/+12What an unfortunate title - at first I felt sorry for the officers, as I understood that they were tortured for some reason. Now I see that the Hippocratic Oath means nothing to some physicians. If you don't care about other people, atleast care about the promise you made for yourself. Then again, if you don't care about other people, why become a doctor/physician at all?!
- teamgwho, on 04/07/2009, -2/+10why? does wearing a uniform make it ok? does the fact that they "were under orders" make it ok? does the fact that "u.s. lives are in danger" make it ok? torture is torture. murder is murder. when someone does this sort of thing to american citizens/soldiers we are up in arms and want bloody revenge. does it not reason then that arabs would feel the same way when we commit the same atrocity?
an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind (or something to that effect)
let's also not forget that research has shown countless times that information extracted under enhanced interrogation techniques rarely provides useful information and often provides false information. there rarely is a "ticking bomb with thousands of lives at stake". using psychology and rewards often works. the idea that the jack bauer approach is a fantasy of hollywood and the extreme right wing. - Rothbardosaurus, on 04/07/2009, -0/+8The labels for the Obama Personality Cult were articulated by his opponents. Who else would do it? The gushing of certain media outlets was pretty blatant. I hope this doesn't put me on the same side in your mind with Limbaugh and Robertson, though, because they also do plenty of damage to the public debate. I don't care about the left-right fight. What I care about is liberty.
I'm not about to accept a turd sandwich just because it isn't infected with cholera. Maybe if we keep demanding the best, instead of settling for "Well, he's not Hitler", then someday we just might *get* the best. - greenfyre, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7"The US also has the third largest population."
ie 5% of the total - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+8at the same time, we justified their actions by stooping to their level. never mind the fact that you don't get any reliable intel out of torture.
- manosinistra, on 04/07/2009, -1/+8If there is a God, how on earth can anyone imagine that s/he would take sides for a country?
Remember, Nazi soldiers had "Gott mit uns" written on their belt buckle and were convinced they were working towards a better humanity... - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -12/+18GOD BLESS AMERICA!
/s
obama is too much of a political pussy to do the war crimes trial guys. :-/ I voted for him, but he better not piss us off or it's going to be a short four years for him. - jamesmcm, on 04/07/2009, -1/+7And you think they just magically stopped when Obama took over?
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -3/+9He's been president for 2.5 months. You can't expect all of these things to happen overnight. If, 2 years later we're in the same mess, then I'll be against Obama just like you.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -4/+10Actually you're wrong, that's why there was a movement to you know, end the war and all that *****. It wasn't pro-enemy, it was pro-soldier. Getting our military involved in both vietnam and iraq is a war crime against ourselves.
- freeforall232, on 04/07/2009, -0/+6@Rothbardosaurus - "No crisis is big enough to justify tyranny."
Genius. - 1x253, on 04/07/2009, -6/+12Now I want to hear the pro-Bush douchebags arrogantly proclaim that the Red Cross are a part of the anti-American tinfoil hat conspiracy. The Red Cross is just filled with loonies, right? If you've ever read the European society pages, there is few balls as prestigious and moneyed as those thrown by the Red Cross; they are VERY establishment.
So bring it on pro-Bush/War douchebags, don't just digg me down; explain yourselves. Tell us all how the Red Cross is filled with tin foil hats. Let's here your same old song and dance summary dismissals of yet more proof of war crimes by not actually addressing the information, but instead attacking the messengers themselves. - kmoed, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5"Then again, if you don't care about other people, why become a doctor/physician at all?!"
Most do it for the $$$$$$$ - themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -5/+10What is described in this article is nothing below what Stalinist Russia practised in the Gulag. Stalin at least, never pretended to uphold the highest levels of humanity and justice.
Shame on America. Shame on America. Shame on America. - norman619, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7You clearly overestimate the power of the president in matters like this.
"He better not piss us off or it's going to be a short four yers for him?"
LOL!!!! Yeah right. Quit pretending you or the American people as a whole have a backbone. What stopped you from getting rid of Bush? He pissed off lots of people. How about firing congress? Less than 13% approval rating and still you did nothing. They continually disregard the will of the people. They are slef-serving leeches. What you DID do is allow these criminals to stay in office and I am predicting they will be re-elected. I'd REALLY love to hear your reasoning for inaction when the people were clearly dissatisfied with the president and congress and why we should expect any different this time.
It's pathetic. - mithrasinvictus, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7Not even in the same league. There should be an investigation, though.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6Nearly every country believes that god or a god is on their side in a conflict. I would imagine it has been that way ever since humanity has fabricated supernatural beings who are supposed to control their fate.
- manosinistra, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5...ever since humans have cloaked their selfish interests in the robes of high ideals.
- kareemachan, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6Well, I'm glad you told us that, but citation or you're just flapping your gums.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7Comparing Mengele to Bush is ridiculous at best. Not that I'm not saying Bush still shouldn't be investigated, but come on...
- hawkspur, on 04/07/2009, -5/+10Torture doesn't even work. And you're a treasonous scumbag who advocates the very things we as a country have been fighting against for generations.
There are so many wrongs in your statement. The North Vietnamese did it, so it's okay for us to? That's pretty logical. Fail.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6America deserves to be blamed when we ***** up. It's called being held accountable. As these ***** should be.
- mithrasinvictus, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7They were and wanted to bring all the soldiers home asap so they would no longer risk torture.
You can't claim moral superiority and then use the enemies atrocities as justification for your own. - rpgmakr, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5Yeah, this goes right there with every religion having their own "only" god. Each of them with very different rites for one to call it that they have, ultimately, the same god but with peculiarities that for some "random" reason seem to have a lot to do with their respective cultures.
- TopScientists, on 04/07/2009, -2/+6For the record, I care.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4sits in a corner in fetal position repeating: obama good, republicans bad. Obama good, republicans bad. Obama good, republicans bad......
- hawkspur, on 04/07/2009, -2/+6The 20 percenters have never really been champions of logic and well-thought out arguments.
- Focher, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4Your "pro torture" argument - especially the ticking time bomb scenario - is wholly without merit. It's never happened. Ever. Information gained through torture is inherently unreliable, and the evidence in the US's use of it against alleged Al Qaeda members is that the information gained was exactly that ... wrong.
And can you shut the hell up about "go live in a place and see what it's like without freedom." I've lived in various countries around the world, and the crap belief that the US is the only, let alone the most, free country is bogus. Besides that you are implying that our government should behave like some third world one is unacceptable, how about you live in another country that doesn't torture. You could try Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, etc etc etc. - NorrisOBE, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3What about communist countries? Cambodia anyone?
- norman619, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3tebriel:
Sorry but our government is supposed to funtion for the good of the people not the geed and sefl-interest of those in office. It's supposed to listen to the people. So no. It isn't functioning. When our elected officials can disregard the wishes of the people it's a sign of it being broken. When they feel it's 100% OK to slip in spending they know full well the people would not approve, it's a sign government is broken. Government is supposed to serve the PEOPLE not itself. Try to remember that.
Oh, and I didn't vote for Bush when he ran and I didn't vote of Obama. I'm an independant. I couldn't care less about what party any given candidate belongs to. What I care about is a proven track record. Their actial performance and resume. Yes I know. I'm crazy that way. - thesonofdarwin, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4Splashing water over their faces? I suppose we can do it on the flipside too..
Making minor cutaneous lacerations compared to permanently damaging hair cells and pushing individuals to the brink of drowning before bringing them back?
Just because you word it in a manner trying to lessen the act doesn't make it any less so in reality. - emkaysmith, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4opivyh8su -- So in your opinion, we should hurry to be *just* like the enemy, right? Oh, no, the Bad Guys are torturing people! We have to do it, too! Only more of it!" And how does that make our way of life "superior" to theirs?
Chrsalii -- If you think the ends justify the means, that we should oppose the enemy's war crimes by committing our own war crimes, then this country isn't *worth* saving. If you can't tell the difference between yourselves and the enemy, what's the point? -
