      >Every CIA, NSA or any other employee of an intelligence service.
      >Every federal employee of any agency for any reason.
      >Every member of the public that has a sit down with a White House staffer.
      >Every member of the press that gets five minutes with a White House staffer
      >Every member of the military that attends a meeting at the White House.
      >Every diplomat- US or Foreign that attends a meeting at the White House.
      >Every whistle-blower interviewed by a White House staffer
      >Every foreign national that will only speak with a White House Staffer

      It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that by publishing every single one of these names, you compromise intelligence officers, agency or industry whistle-blowers, diplomatic back channels and any number of things that the executive branch has a legitimate need to do in private.

      Hypothetical scenario: the US shares intelligence with a number of countries. Occasionally, high level intel will be delivered by a diplomat. Is it a good idea for a Jordanian Ambassador to sign the guest book every time he goes to the White House to deliver time sensitive information about Al Qaeda operations?

      This is NOT a partisan issue. A democrat in the White House would have the same need for security or their intel assets and whistle blowers will shut the hell up or be murdered.

      You have to understand it's not published. It's only made available once a request for information is made. Then it whoever made the request can publish. Why do you think those records are kept because it's important to know who is accessing our nations top official, why is it silly not not expect the citizens to hold our officials accountable? Also, unless your a covert operative why should we not know if your visiting the White House. Additionally, covert operators will be talking to their handlers who in turn will be talking to their division chief who in turn will be talking to thier directors who in turn may or may not visit the white house but will probably be talking to their respective Cabinet Secretary. So why don't we want log available.

      These logs have been available for every other president since the FOIA was enacted, why not now? With as much smoke as appears to be billowing out of the White House why do you still resist to check for fire?

      This statement doesn't make any sense. The Secret Service is not autonomous, it is under the administration of the executive and it isn't possible for "The Admin" to usurp itself. The name and role of the Secret Service should give reasonable people expectations that the Freedom of Information Act isn't particularly applicable. Are we also to publish the President's phone records and all of his private conversations ? The White house should voluntarily publish the identities of most visitors, but it isn't a mandatory legal obligation. We can safely assume that there always have and always will be communications between the President and others that will remain secret, only to be revealed many years later.

      Politically- I am a moderate. I've been around a while and know how a few things work. I like to remind some of you that there are more than one side to an argument. An argument that appears to be unfairly weighed in one direction by foreign (make that Saudi) ownership of some big US media outlets.

    FTA: Under an executive order Bush signed in 2001, the archivist of the United States cannot unilaterally release the records without the permission of the current president, former presidents and their representatives.

    "The scary thing about this move by the vice president's office is the power grab part of it," said Tom Blanton, head of the National Security Archive, a private group which uses the FOIA law to pierce government secrecy.

    "We're looking at a huge problem if the White House can reach into any agency and say certain records have something to do with the White House and they are presidential from now on," Blanton said. "This White House has been infinitely creative in finding new ways and new forms of government secrecy."


    I can think of only two conceivable reasons for the level of secrecy surrounding the Bush administration:
    1) They are hiding very serious and important information from the public
    2) They want people to think they are hiding very serious and important information from the public
    Well, I suppose there is a third even more deeply saddening possibility:

      It's no surprise Bush wants to hide visitor records. And Cheney, well ever since before the Iraq war he's been controlling records of who in the oil industry set agendas with him. No surprise there.

      As the adage says, where there's smoke, there's fire. Any administration trying to hide as much as this one has got some dark secrets the public needs to see flushed into view.

On many of these days, the Press Office held press gaggles aboard Air Force One—which raises questions about what Guckert was doing at the White House.     -- So my question is, is the Secret Service that bad at record keeping? Then we have a problem there. But if they are not that much in error, then what indeed has been going on?

    WASHINGTON (AP) - After promising unprecedented openness regarding Congress' pork barrel practices, House Democrats are moving in the opposite direction as they draw up spending bills for the upcoming budget year.

    Democrats are sidestepping rules approved their first day in power in January to clearly identify "earmarks" - lawmakers' requests for specific projects and contracts for their states.

    Rather than including specific pet projects, grants and contracts in legislation as it is being written, Democrats are following an order by the House Appropriations Committee chairman to keep the bills free of such earmarks until it is too late for critics to effectively challenge them.

    Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., says those requests for dams, community grants and research contracts for favored universities or hospitals will be added to spending measures in the fall. That is when House and Senate negotiators assemble final bills.

    Such requests total billions of dollars.

    As a result, most lawmakers will not get a chance to oppose specific projects as wasteful or questionable when the spending bills for various agencies get their first votes in the full House in June.

    The House-Senate compromise bills due for final action in September cannot be amended and are subject to only one hour of debate, precluding challenges to individual projects.

    Obey insists he is reluctantly taking the step because Appropriations Committee members and staff have not had enough time to fully review the 36,000 earmark requests that have flooded the committee.

    What Obey is doing runs counter to new rules that Democrats promised would make such spending decisions more open.

Appeal and Appeal again until it reach the supreme court than take the judge out duck hunting. Overnight he turn down the case(Citing GAO were in no position to sue, nor acts on behave of Congress(which was republican majority at the time ALSO, jeeze). When our Federal Supreme court justices are handpicked drones for the president, with incompetence Congress. The executive branch pretty much can do w/e the ***** they want, and if anyone wants to investigate they can ***** off. Don't like it? Too bad for average Americans.

Secondly this has nothing to do with Gannon (a hooker, not a porn star), Gannon most likely worked for Rove and was involved in Plamegate damage control. Thirdly, Cheney is most likely afraid that his visitor logs will reveal the extent to which this administration is controlled by petroleum interests, Halliburton execs and Saudi royalty.
  • griffin7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is an unfortunate development. It also touches on the unsatisfactory condition regarding Congress and its rights to secret visitor logs. We would not expect Congress to protest the executives moves in this matter as it would showcase Congress's own criminal complicity.
    Anyone who has ever signed in on such a visitor log does not have to disclose the nature of the business if it classified, or can use a nondescript subject.
    Apparently, even using ambiguous means, if a visitor accurately identifies himself (which I wonder if they really do), they could be later called to discuss their visit in a criminal court. Moreover, secretive government visitors can probably get fake identification cards just as easy as the tens of millions of illegal aliens in the US.
    Another related issue (sort of related), is I wonder what happens to the video surveillance tapes, who has control of them, and how long they are retained. This shows very clearly who these secretive visitors are, as well as the car they park in the parking lot (I can only presume that the President and Vice President use surveillance methods as least as sophisticated as Walmart or Seven-Eleven).
    Obviously this has more to do with criminal activity and potential prosecution, than it could possibly have to do with impinging on the right of the president or vice president to carry out their essential functions.
    This is just another seed being planted that will bring down the federal government in its entirety.
