- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+142You realize that if Bush had told the truth, and said "we're probably going to dump rumsfeld in the next week", it would have HELPED the republicans, right?
- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -18/+124wow, Bush lied?! No way!
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -12/+64all I can say is "heckuva job Rumsey."
- geekwithsoul, on 10/12/2007, -12/+58A liar lying about replacing a liar? In this administration, sadly not a surprise.
The irony is that if the election had gone more for the GOP, Rumsfeld would have stayed and if Bush had gotten rid of Rumsfeld months ago, the election would have gone more for the GOP.
Karl Rove a genius? I think not. - mmazing, on 10/12/2007, -15/+53All I can say is : lol.
- withears, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40He realizes it.
He just thinks that it's ok.
If Bush were a regular guy and worked down the hall from you, he'd be the guy you'd pick on at the office for being a dunce. - ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38"To remind the Left of their attempt to make the US lose this war by any means necessary in order to gain the White House in '08, I am going to be checking in from time to time to also remind you of the promises of your own Democrats."
Pull your head out. The war is already lost, it's now just a race of attrition. We're making MORE terrorists, not getting rid of them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35Foos, the country hates rumsfeld. Hell, the world hates him. Dumping him right before the election could have motivated a lot of disenfranchised republicans into believing that Bush might be able to turn things around.
Had he done it, i would be here saying "karl rove just pulled another fast one on libs." But he didnt, and it was for the benefit of the country and the democratic party. - samcrut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26"The war is already lost, it's now just a race of attrition. We're making MORE terrorists, not getting rid of them."
I thought we already won. I seem to remember reading "mission accomplished" on a big boat with lots of hoopla. I think they served cake. - JustEvk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29@dgriessmann: No we can't, glad we agree.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24This is no surprise to anyone, not even Bush supporters.
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@dgriessmann
I didn't see any statements being made that implied the dems were angels.
You are a tool! - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -18/+29Hrrrm, did anyone actually go read the article linked by the thinkprogress propaganda machine?
Here, I'll place the FULL quote from Yahoo:
"President Bush said Wednesday he WANTS Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney to remain with him until the end of his presidency, extending a job guarantee to two of the most-vilified members of his administration."
Now, what thinkprogress edited:
"Last week, President Bush unequivocally told a group of reporters that Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and Vice President Cheney WOULD “remain with him until the end of his presidency,"
Amazing that they chopped off the part where Bush said he WANTED them to stay, but he DID NOT say that they were staying. So when Rumsfeld resigned turned in the resignation, Bush accecpted.
Now who's lying? - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24It's not surprising for a politician in bush's position to lie about something like this right before an election. This really isn't news. (Not trolling, just saying it's not really newsworthy or surprising he lied about it)
- cmearns, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Smarter? Bush IS a liars paradox.
Bush: "I'm lying right now."
Whats even scarier is that hes probably telling the truth! - mmazing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Yes yes, it is true that openly saying a week before the election that Rumsfeld was going to resign would probably damage the campaign. But that's not the point, the POINT is that he said that they would not be leaving during the next two years. That is exactly what he said, which was a lie.
That's why this pisses people off, the ends don't justify the means.
He could have just as easily said that it was something that wasn't going to be discussed. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Re:Monolith2
"You realize that if Bush had told the truth, and said "we're probably going to dump Rumsfeld in the next week", it would have HELPED the republicans, right?"
I know. In relative terms I don't care so much that he lied, except that the clear alternative seems to be the better option all around. That's what attests to his poor judgment. - youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Whether he should have announced rumsfeld's resignation earlier or later doesn't matter, the fact is rumsfeld is out and no matter how you cut it, its a good thing!!
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Dumsfeld? That's really childish and Limbaugh-esque, you know. I think we at Digg consider ourselves more intelligent than the average "ditto-head" so cutesy insult names aren't required.
- kjizzle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Buried as inaccurate did anyone hear when he said he wanted them to stay? Nobody likes Bush but this is bias.
- greenoch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15So he's lying about lying right now. Brilliant! These Republicans get smarter and smarter every day.
- Dadgumit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Pathetic isn't it sad that our country has become a bunch of schoolyard idiocy rather than a reasoned democracy. Think with your brains and not your emotions.
- withears, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"one of the greatest guys in history ... Hitler"
Wow.
Hey, I should get an award for creative cutting and pasting! - miketrin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Here we go with the blame clinton for bush failures. sigh.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If Bush told the truth there would be a article on Digg saying:
"Bush pulls Rumsfeld at last second for political gain!"
Come on guys, yeah so Bush isn't the greatest president but can we please move on? Nitpicking every little thing that happens and putting a negative spin on it isn't helping anyone and it isn't going to make his term end sooner. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8the daily show/colbert report still haven't come on yet..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Ok, I've got a couple of points that show the inaccuracy of the article for poor wording choice and jumping to a conclusion that has a lot of truthiness, but not real facts.
1) President bush during his stumping said he plans to keep Chaney and Rumsfeld. At that time I'm sure he did intend to keep both and by saying that he's showing his constituents that he believes he is on the right course. There is something to be said about confidence and saying a week before an election that you don't like your secretary of defense does not bode well with an election nearing.
2) He spoke with Rumsfeld about resigning. It does not say he approached Rumsfeld about resigning or even when he said it. Rumsfeld could have brought it up after Bush said he wanted to keep Rumsfeld and they could have talked about it then. Even though Bush wanted to keep Rumsfeld, if Rumsfeld wants to resign he has that right. I don't think anyone would expect Bush to force Rumsfeld to keep the position, or want him to do so.
There is too little information and just enough mis-information in this article to really make it accurate. There needs to be a "Conspiracy Theory" option for burying an article, one used when a person takes bits of the truth and fabricates a story around it instead of giving enough facts in the article so that you can see they are right. Due to lack of true evidence about time frames and about who approached who about the resignment I'm labeling it inaccurate. And this should be filed under Political Opinion because of the lack of facts. - Dopamini, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12At least he didn't make Cheney Secretary of Defense too.
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Last week, President Bush unequivocally told a group of reporters that Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and Vice President Cheney WOULD “remain with him until the end of his presidency,"
Considering it's the presidents decision of who WOULD remain it would seem pretty clear that bush did indeed
Did you say the same thing when Clinton was being impeached? - EllisAshbrook, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm not too upset by this. Actually, it would have been idiotic for him to undermine Rumsfeld the week before an election! BTW I am absolutely thrilled about the news, and the fact that he waited to discuss it shows the the Dems didn't need any help from Bush to win the House back!
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6All fine and good, but He didn't lie.
The original quote from Yahoo states that he WANTED Rumsfeld and Cheney to stay... not that they WOULD.
Please look a little deeper than a known propaganda site. - poolboy82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Investigation of war crimes? I don't see that ever happening. If the Speaker of the House has no intention of moving for impeachment I doubt we'll see anything on war crimes.
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Please.
Stop.
You keep proving to me that today in fact __CAN__ GET BETTER! - DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Ugh, digg should just put up a permanent link to thinkprogress.org on the front page and save everyone some trouble. Ridiculous.
Also marked as inaccurate:
"The other reason why is I had not had a chance to visit with Bob Gates yet. I had not had my final conversation with Don Rumsfeld yet at that point"
That exclamation makes perfect sense. No one knows for sure Rumsfeld would have resigned had the election gone the other way. He has said he would step down if a situation such as a Democratic majority would keep him from being effective. Just because they were talking about it and might have assumed the Democrats would gain the majority does not mean it was set in stone.
Talk about a stretch. - youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8@iceperson
What's your point? Previous presidents have lied? Did you call for their impeachment as well? So where do you stand now you hypocrite! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10@ mmazing
"the POINT is that he said that they would not be leaving during the next two years. That is exactly what he said, which was a lie.
That's why this pisses people off, the ends don't justify the means."
Yes, he lied... but dont forget that every time republicans mention Clinton lying theyre met with "well of course he would have lied given the circumstances." And that was under oath during an impeachment, not to a random reporters question.
I'll probably get dugg waaaay down for that, but its the truth. - senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is idiotic. Anybody watch the press conference? He told the 3 reporters in the oval office that he was keeping Rumsfeld so that there wouldn't be widespread impact on the election, and to get them off the topic and onto their other questions. Any president would've done the same.
anyway, good to see the man go. It's about time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why can't you ***** point to the real story instead on the blog site?
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I'm gonna be posting this alot:
All fine and good, but He didn't lie.

Please look a little deeper than a known propaganda site. - joshcarr6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Worst US presidents in order: (according to wikipedia)
40 - James Buchanan - 1 term - "If you are as happy entering the presidency as I am in leaving it, then you are truly a happy man."
39 - Warren Gamaliel Harding - 1 term
38 - Franklin Pierce, Sr. - 1 term
37 - Andrew Johnson - 1 term
36 - Millard Fillmore - almost 1 term (took over when Taylor died, he was never actually elected)
19 - George Bush
Bush may be an idiot but things have been much worse. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm gonna be posting this alot:

Bush lies all the dam time - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is she really that scary to you that you have to inflate her to such proportions?
- mugginns, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Quit it with the facts and reality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- samcrut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You can't impeach someone for lying to the press. That's not illegal. Clinton got nailed with perjury, because they asked him about Monica while he was under oath. That's where you're not allowed to lie.
There's far better material to impeach Bush over than this. I'd start with his failure to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Did you just say Bush should be investigated for WAR CRIMES?
you need a SERIOUS check of your mental faculties. - amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Just like your post and that broken condom that loosed you upon the world.
