So it's best to put their heads in the sand and stay in that perpetual state of denial then blend into obscurity (with their secured pensions and lobbying contracts)--- when the American public forgets about it like the rest of their crimes.
    Case in point: Do you know what Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Wolfowitz, Bremer, Libby, Gonzales, or any other Bush cronies are doing these days? You should be a bit curious since your tax dollars are supporting their retirement....

  • ashnbell, on 01/05/2008, -1/+28This was over 2 years ago, so she'd have been 20 at most at the time she was drugged, gang raped, and then held against her will by the comany that you so rightly point out has a lot of blood on it's hands. If she'd not managed to get one of the people who'd been assigned as her effective jailors to let her call someone back home, the comany would have in all liklihood found a way of keeping her story from leaving iraq (as you point out, they don't exactly shy away from killing people).

    Do you really think she deserved what she got, irrespective of her intentions when signing up for the job?

    Since the event itself she's started a some kind of non profit organisation charity type thing to help victims of sexual abuse working overseas for us companies (that's from memory so the exact title may be a bit different) which she's dontating any settlemnet from her court case to. On top of that she's also causing a load of bad publicty for Halliburton/KBR... and I know that one of their employees geting raped and their response to this of effectively kidnapping her, is nothing in comparison to the rest of the crimes they've commited, but the the fact remains (tragic as it is) that this sort of thing is a more potent weapon against them than any number of grieving iraquis protesting the companys actions.

Sooner or later, their morality will have to see that gang-rape, torture, unconstitutional wire-tapping, lying to create a war, ignoring the flooding of a US city, propping up thieving energy and infrastructure businesses like Enron and Halliburton, and killing thousands of brown-skinned people are collectively worse than gay marriage and choice.

    All we can do is move forward. There will be investigations, there will be convictions, there will be long prison sentences. However, it is in our best interest to keep moving forward. Vote in 2008 and you will be swept up in the wave of historical change that will reposition our country as the world's symbol of freedom and democracy.

While Congress can hold hearings on these matters, It's just a mite unconstitutional for Congress to preemptively investigate issues that the Department hasn't yet ignored. Now that the Department has ignored the issue and as soon as it is clear there is no interest in investigating, then Congress can step in and take it up. Until then, it's a bit presumptuous to run around investigating every issue before the Department of Justice, the appropriate venue for this, has had a chance to.

I think what you are seeing in these responses are a general feeling of frustration and helplessness that any of the agencies and individuals who should be taking responsibility and correcting the situation simply will not. For them this is just another crime to be ignored. Ugly people have brutally changed the course of this woman's life but even uglier people just don't care.
