For a cartoon, this is a beautiful message - xirkonia, on 11/05/2008, -6/+127It's the new presidential handshake.
- retzed, on 11/06/2008, -3/+113Finishing what was started over seven score and five years ago.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -5/+107What's more is that Lincoln was a racist, but realized how economically impractical slavery was. Digg me down, but then go and actually look it up.
- Paulish, on 11/06/2008, -2/+104What? Are you trying to sell me cigarettes now?
- harvinator24, on 11/06/2008, -13/+94What is there not like about this guy?
He is smart, smooth, and hip. - passedoutghost, on 11/06/2008, -2/+75OH ***** LINCOLN'S A TERRORIST!
- Yookji, on 11/06/2008, -0/+66Lincoln was a moderate regarding emancipation. He ran on a platform of not extending slavery to new states, but did not plan on abolishing it. After extensive pressure from radical Republicans (who favored abolishing slavery) he decided to emancipate slaves only in Confederate territory, which still outraged many slave owners in Union territory. The 14th amendment abolished slavery, but Constitutional amendments are proposed and ratified by Congress and state legislatures, not the president. Besides, Lincoln had been assassinated by the time that amendment was proposed. Give credit where credit is due, to William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and other prominent abolitionists, not Lincoln.
- jtotheoe, on 11/06/2008, -5/+63Second best Obama bump I've seen all day...
- roxgod666, on 11/06/2008, -0/+55Why would anyone have to look it up? If anyone payed attention during history class, they would know. Just about everyone was racist during that time, even the people that were fighting against it.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -3/+53Awesome cartoon. However, if I were religious I'd be praying for Obama.
We all know racism is far from over and that there are many nuts out there. - Nightzet467, on 11/06/2008, -3/+53back when Republicans had the same ideas on how to run the country (competently) as Democrats have now, yes we do

I think this is somewhat akin to Obama being against gay marriage. Politicians have to give lip service to the accepted bigotry of the day.

Lincoln also freed the slaves.
Stay in school. - Paulish, on 11/06/2008, -0/+36Indeed. IIRC Lincoln wanted to send the liberated slaves to Africa. He didn't want them in the US.
He enslaved the men in the north through conscription to free the slaves in the south. In the south you are owned by a master, in the north you are owned by the government. That must have been a ***** time to live in. I guess we couldn't end slavery peacefully like Europe did. - TPorter72, on 11/06/2008, -3/+36who the hell is Rama? Ramadan? A Muslim pres. Ya right.

- The5thH0RS3M4N, on 11/06/2008, -22/+50People just don't get it do they. The Civil War was not fought about slavery, it was fought about state's rights. The southern states did not believe that the federal government should have so much power over them. The war was fought to keep the nation together, slavery was really just a side issue. Anyone with an understanding of US history beyond the politically correct revisionist view fed to us knows better.
- Bloodwine, on 11/06/2008, -0/+27Nope, his father was Kenyan and his mother was white.

- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -2/+21When did he vote for The Patriot Act? The Patriot Act was put forth in 2001, he didn't get elected to the senate until 04.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -8/+27He voted for FISA and the Patriot Act.
Aside from that, though, I'll admit that there's really not much to not like. I do support him overall, even if he has made a few poor decisions. - JoeMondo, on 11/06/2008, -8/+26Um, the state's right to allow SLAVERY.
- Vegabondsx, on 11/06/2008, -3/+20but slavery was instrumental in the South wanting to maintain slavery rights and to keep federal power from taking that away. The war wasn't about Free States v. Southern States, it was about the southern states resisting the federal power and the federal government exerting their authority. While what you said is the reason for the Civil War, it was slavery that was the central issue causing the resistance of Federal Authority. It's naive to say that Slavery is the only issue for the Civil War, and it's just as naive to say that Slavery wasn't a major device leading to the war.
- rv361162, on 11/06/2008, -24/+41OH ***** no, read your history.
Honest Abe killed a ***** of people in the north and south, it wasn't about slaves, the government could have purchased and freed every last damn slave... it was about the south wanting to say "***** you northey's, I'm creating my own gawd damn government! CYA!"
And Abe said "well, I'll be damned if that *****'s gonna happen" and there's the shortest summary of why we had the civil war.
Seriously, though, read your history on that one... - korvan504521, on 11/06/2008, -0/+16I don't like his policies about gun control or capital gains taxes. I don't like his corprate tax policies, and I think his health care plan is all smoke and mirrors. A lot of his other policies I do agree with.
Do I think McCain and Palin were better for the job? I did about 8 months ago, but god damn did they do a good job of convincing me otherwise during their campaign. I still didn't vote for Obama, but I didn't vote for M/P either.
But I will not disagree that Obama is one slick talker. - NaziHatinChimp, on 11/06/2008, -9/+25Whatever I love Obama and was proud to vote for him but I REFUSE to see Lincoln as some sort of savior to the slaves. He was for some Northern states keeping slavery at first.
The only reason he wanted to free any slaves was because he knew that America's economy couldn't compete with a global economy without a free market. If blacks didn't get paid they couldn't spend money. If they couldn't spend it then it wouldn't help us.
Lincoln, like most republicans since him was for business. I'm not saying it didn't work out but don't act like Lincoln was lover of black freedoms.
"Also in his inaugural address, in a final attempt to reunite the states and prevent the looming war, Lincoln supported the pending Corwin Amendment to the Constitution, which had already passed Congress. This amendment, which explicitly protected slavery in those states in which it already existed, had more appeal to the critical border states than to the states that had already declared their separation"
