- acroyear2, on 10/14/2008, -11/+210No, I think he quit... or maybe it was one of those "You should quit or I'll fire you" things. Anyway, let this lead a new movement of conservative thinking, liberal thinking, libertarian thinking, etc. I'm tired of ***** socialist, marxist, reagan, carter, vietnam, bush, clinton, *****.
give me someone who rolls with the punches. someone who likes good ideas. someone who IS flexible. like water because I don't think it shows a lack of principle. I think it shows intellectual curiosity. socialism offers no utopia. the free market offers no utopia. we should all recognize that by now. - OCPaddler, on 10/14/2008, -2/+119Dugg for the content, not so much the headline. It's pretty obvious that it was a resignation, however unwilling.
- goofygarber, on 10/15/2008, -6/+102Thanks. I have that rare disease where I can't read the summary. The comments? No problem!
edit, foot/mouth. Didn't realize you changed Charles to William. If that's correct, I guess its an okay comment. - SquireB, on 10/14/2008, -18/+111Someone call Ben Stein, Buckley Jr.'s been Expelled.
Guess there's "No Intelligence Allowed" over at the NR, huh? - booksnmore4you, on 10/14/2008, -7/+78This is more as evidenced by this:
FTA
So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me.
/FTA - spaceman84, on 10/15/2008, -3/+57Ronald Reagan was the original deregulate-cut taxes-and-spend-like-*****-crazy President. He was a ***** terrible President.
If he were a real conservative, he wouldn't have set the trend for massive deficit spending by taking the national debt from $700 billion to $3 trillion. I blame him for the mess we're in now because after Reagan, politicians suddenly believed that deficit spending is no big deal. Wrong. It's a BIG ***** DEAL. - macaca, on 10/15/2008, -6/+47No he didn't get fired but he submitted resignation letter and it was accepted. He submitted a resignation letter after he endorsed Obama. In fact he submitted resignation letter because of lots of hate mails/calls and cancellation of subscription threats were done against "National Review" , the conservative bible founded by his father.
He was on Hardball today and I heard him. I am a huge Obama supporter but buried for wrong and misleading title. We just cant be another misleading like a FOX.
Obama/Biden 08 - pineapplepaul, on 10/15/2008, -0/+39From Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review:
"Chris is up with a post at The Daily Beast, "Sorry, Dad, I Was Fired." I’d like to clarify this “firing” business. Over the weekend, Chris wrote us a jaunty e-mail with the subject line "A Sincere Offer," in which he offered to resign his column on NR's back page and said that if we accepted, there "would be no hard feelings, only warmest regards and understanding." We took the offer sincerely. Chris had done us the favor of writing the column beginning seven issues ago on a "trial basis" (his words), while our regular back-page columnist, Mark Steyn, was on hiatus. Now, Mark is back to writing again, and—I'm delighted to say—will be on NR's back-page in the new issue...It's an intense election season and emotions are running high. We continue to have the highest regard for Chris's talent and wit, and extend to him warmest regards and understanding." - jub0r, on 10/14/2008, -3/+38I haven't read their print version (maybe that is more rational), but judging by their on-line columns, I would imagine that any article that suggested Obama was anything less than the demon spawn of Satan would get its author fired.
- rheaume, on 10/15/2008, -2/+30Jeff Buckley, columnist for the National Review and son of the magazines founder, Charles Barkley, has been fired for his endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) for President.
- Siraris, on 10/15/2008, -0/+26This story is inaccurate. He clearly states that he offered his resignation, and was not fired. I'm not against the story, and I think it's great he endorsed Obama, I just think that if we are going to submit these articles, we should keep them accurate, as not to appear biased to conservatives.
- goofygarber, on 10/15/2008, -1/+27No, I think he pointed out that the magazine founder's name was wrong; its just hard to catch when you bury it in the entire text instead of addressing it specifically.
- rondeth, on 10/15/2008, -1/+24From the original endorsement: In his embrace of Obama, Buckley quoted his father as saying, "You know, I've spent my entire lifetime separating the Right from the kooks." Obviously, the charge will be that "everyone else" would be the kooks he spoke of, but I'm not so sure myself. That's not to excuse the ***** crazies from the left, either.
It seems the old man could see what was happening to the grand ol' party. I wonder what his take would be on Palin? - OneLess, on 10/14/2008, -4/+25Whether or not he was fired, it's pretty clear from what he said that the National Review from the top down is not very happy with him. If all of your co-workers and readers are of the opinion that you are a cretin, you might as well be fired.
- Disgod, on 10/15/2008, -3/+24Kathleen Parker, the woman who got the you should have been aborted email was on The Colbert Report on Monday talking about the hate mail she's received.
I want to know the cognitive dissonance that must be going on in these right wing nut job's minds. "NO ABORTIONS, well except we'll wish them on the people we hate because we hate them. I love Jesus, he loves all, except for those people who disagree with us then he'll send them all to hell for being communist fruits, even though we've never met them. Don't judge, unless its someone we think is against us then judge him and slander him."
The double think is staggering. - nosecohn, on 10/15/2008, -1/+22Yeah, I don't get the conservative idolatry of Reagan. He set records for deficit spending, subverted the Constitution by selling weapons to Iran and funneling the proceeds to armed rebels in Nicaragua, and diverted taxpayer money to private donors in the HUD scandal. Hardly "conservative" in my view. The S&L crisis also came about because of deregulation he instituted.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -1/+21retarded people shouldn't comment
- reconsldr74d, on 10/15/2008, -7/+26Buried for referencing a movie that blatantly lied about almost everything in it
- rondeth, on 10/15/2008, -0/+18FTA: "I retain the fondest feelings for the magazine that my father founded, but I will admit to a certain sadness that an act of publishing a reasoned argument for the opposition should result in acrimony and disavowal."
- nosecohn, on 10/15/2008, -3/+20It is absolutely time for a new party in US politics. The neo-cons have killed the GOP and big money has castrated the Dems.
A diverse group of fiscal conservatives and social progressives who care about liberty, the Constitution, the environment and sound money could form a coalition that would really draw support in this country.
Unfortunately the Republicrat Incumbency Party (RIP) won't allow it. The only thing all those folks agree on is 'no other parties.' - jdibiase, on 10/15/2008, -3/+19I lean to the conservative, and am surprised by Buckley's endorsement, though think he should stay on at NR. But I have to bury this story as inaccurate since he wasn't fired. Of course, they could have refused his resignation, but accepting it is very different from being fired.
- bryxal, on 10/15/2008, -1/+16"Within hours of my endorsement appearing in The Daily Beast it became clear that National Review had a serious problem on its hands. So the next morning, I thought the only decent thing to do would be to offer to resign my column there. This"
Honestly... I'm pro Obama but I'm more Pro Truth. You can't win against lies with more lies, The end does NOT justify the means, because if that's what you think, one day you'll wake up and you'll realize that you have become everything you hated. - Cattywampus, on 10/15/2008, -2/+16Wrong... he resigned.
- rheaume, on 10/15/2008, -1/+15Here comes your pink slip
- AgentMull, on 10/15/2008, -0/+13Actually, it was Gnarls Barkley.
- pintomp3, on 10/15/2008, -2/+15reagan was a real conservative, who grew the government and the national debt more than any previous president.
- JacksonYaya, on 10/15/2008, -1/+13Actually, it was Charles Barkley.
- sekhui, on 10/15/2008, -0/+12the greatest goodness is like water.
it benefits all things and does not compete.
it flows to the low places which men despise.
therefore, it is near the tao. - JaseFace, on 10/15/2008, -3/+15Reagan didn't do ***** but gut this country. The USSR bankrupted itself fighting a war in Afghanistan for 10 years while eastern European and Caucasian nations were increasingly hungry for freedom. Reagan had nothing to do with it. You really think the Berlin wall was torn down because Reagan demanded it?
- eir574, on 10/15/2008, -1/+12You think the people who were upset that a conservative said that Palin isn't qualified to be vice president are themselves liberals? Are you serious, or was that sarcasm?
- bubba9999, on 10/15/2008, -0/+11It sounds more like "no dissension allowed."
- booksnmore4you, on 10/15/2008, -1/+11Reagen was a mixed bag.
The idolatry and mythology of Saint Reagan really *must* end. - funklor, on 10/15/2008, -4/+14Can the OP not read or did he intentionally decide to FOX up the headline? Just because they go with sensationalist half-truths doesn't mean you should.
He wasn't fired, he quit, you can argue he was pretty much forced to resign and I'd agree, but he wasn't fired. - donkeydrop, on 10/15/2008, -0/+10So many inaccuracies in one sentence. Resigned not fired, his father is William not Charles, and oh, this is the author of "Thank you for Smoking", inventor of MOD (Merchants of Death). He does this stuff for laughs.
- EhBlueDuck, on 10/15/2008, -0/+9@AWBoy666 - Buckley's article was not published in the National Review. Your analogy sucks.
On another note:
The Republican party is disappearing before our eyes. Enjoy it. - acroyear2, on 10/15/2008, -0/+9I don't see how it's depressing.
- acroyear2, on 10/15/2008, -1/+9I attended a socialist meeting many years ago. That's more or less the same thing they told me.
Let me know when you find a purely free market society somewhere and I'll show you a purely socialist society somewhere (hint: neither have occurred thus far). - orlyfactor, on 10/15/2008, -4/+12I agree. He ignored AIDS for something like 4 years as well. Everyone invokes him as if he was great, but to someone who lived through his presidency (granted I was 6 when he was elected, but I remember my parents talking about him) - he SUCKED.
- BinaryDelt, on 10/15/2008, -2/+10Good read, and good for him to go out on his terms (misleading title).
- aceellis7, on 10/14/2008, -82/+89Christopher Buckley, columnist for the National Review and son of the magazines founder, William Buckley, has been fired for his endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) for President.
- Tyrghast, on 10/15/2008, -3/+10I got my hopes up that somehow this meant the CTRL+ALT+DELETE guy was quitting his comic. Then my limited reading comprehension kicked in.
- bongfarmer, on 10/15/2008, -9/+16I'm glad that the neocons are showing how close minded they are

From RationalWiki
Jump to: navigation, search
This essay is an original work by some guy. Please comment only on the talk page.
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance -- now Joe gets it, too.
He prepares his morning breakfast: bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment checks because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the taxpayer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.
The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved conservatives have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have." nuff said. - chownrus, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Exactly!!
I am a huge Obama supporter as well, but this headline is patently false.
FTA:
"Within hours of my endorsement appearing in The Daily Beast it became clear that National Review had a serious problem on its hands. So the next morning, I thought the only decent thing to do would be to offer to resign my column there" - brad77, on 10/15/2008, -1/+8That's not how Buckley sees it, considering the URL:
.../2008-10-14/sorry-dad-i-was-fired
I suppose he'd know. - yerock, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Did he slap him from the grave?
- Skip2Maloo, on 10/15/2008, -1/+8I'm in shock. Not from his resignation / termination, but from the fact that a conservative columnist said what he believed and stood by it in the face of what must have been at least marginally anticipated GOP over-reaction.
It's called "principles" based on "integrity"... just in case it's been so long since you've seen either that you've forgotten what they look like. - theeEqualizer, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Awww... I miss Jeff Buckley.
- youareretarded, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6He was on Hardball today and said he offered his resignation and they took it.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -2/+8This is ***** pathetic.
William F. Buckley is spinning in his grave right now. Not just because his son was fired, but because the conservative movement no longer supports conservative values. William F. Buckley himself tore apart the Bush administration, even saying that Bush is not a true conservative (a statement I couldn't agree with more) that the Iraq War was a failure that caused the conservative movement to commit intellectual suicide and destroy itself.
Worse, the conservative movement has abandoned the intellectual honesty it once had in favor of blatant anti-intellectualism. Conservatives like William F. Buckley and George Will were real intellectuals; they were people who were intelligent, proud of it, and who encouraged others to be intellectual. Hell, Newt Gingrich had a Ph.D. in history. William F. Buckley was intellectually honest enough to admit when he made mistakes and apologize for them; for example, he apologized for being against the civil rights movement. Can you imagine a modern so-called "conservative" apologizing for doing something they later realized was wrong? The new batch of so-called "conservatives" led by Sarah Palin are the worst type of "conservative": anti-intellectual and proud of it.
I weep for the future. There is no one left who has the intellectual fortitude to challenge the Marxism of the left. Either the Marxists will win or the anti-intellectual faux-conservatives will win, and both of them will ruin us. -
