We'll see if it can hold after the conventions and debates- cawpin, on 08/05/2008, -18/+2Um, why is this news? It's the ***** CIA. they have to do ***** to get ***** done. Faking a letter isn't anything to get twisted about.

Dude, if and when most of the truth finally emerges (probably 20-30 years from now) it's going to be ten times worse than what we know now.

- kemp34, on 08/05/2008, -8/+70Hello? Congress? Anybody home? I think you have a little tiny piece of work you should be doing, I don't care if there is recess. Call a special session. It should take all of 20 seconds. 435 yays. Move forward.
- PolishLogic, on 08/05/2008, -2/+8They can't. Pelosi has an important book tour that needs her full attention, and Reid has a kid that needs help with his exploratory research on whether or not to run for office.
- InetRoadkill, on 08/05/2008, -2/+7Pelosi and other top dems approved the illegal wiretaps and torture. The last thing they want is an open hearing into Bush's illegal activities since it would reveal their involvement as well.
- kemp34, on 08/05/2008, -0/+8Well, if that is true, these people are essentially admitting that they are plunging this country into tyranny.
- InetRoadkill, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5I'm afraid it's true. Pelosi and other top dems sat on the congressional committees that were formed shortly after 9/11. In a knee jerk reaction and out of fear for being labeled weak on terror, they gave Bush sweeping powers which included the illegal wiretaps and "enhanced interrogation" (torture). This is why Pelosi is blocking all efforts to impeach. If an impeachment took place, the first thing Bush's defense team would do would be to say "Hey, you guys approved this 6 years ago." The jig would be up for Pelosi and company because their complicity would be out in the open for all to see in a very public forum.
- kemp34, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5Well, something needs to be done. Are folks willing to just allow tyranny to stroll onto the scene?
- Caffeinate, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1It didn't stroll, Kemp, it's got disco lights, a dance floor and lots of booze we paid for in tax dollars to keep it going.
- HumanCattle, on 08/05/2008, -9/+75So the Anthrax attacks were an inside job. This forged intelligence linking Saddam Hussein to Al Qaeda was an inside job.
I wonder, what other "inside jobs" are yet to be revealed?- jvill, on 08/05/2008, -1/+42What about all the inside jobs that have ALREADY been revealed?
Scooter Libby? Karl Rove? The US Attorneys scandal? The negligent homicides of Katrina? The telecom immunity? A nation lied into war? A citizenry spied upon by its government and our Constitution violated by our political class? War crimes committed in all our names?
It's Versailles on the Potomac, my friend.
The people who are legally obligated to be looking out for us rabble, us regular citizens, are all in the tank for themselves and each other.
There are now clearly two systems of justice in our country -- and we are in the lesser one.- AnarkeIncarnate, on 08/05/2008, -2/+11Hey. We can't have that unAmerican talk. You had best wear a flag pin lest the special police find you to be a traitor.
Seriously! How can you expect the government to execute the will of the people if they don't push jack boots into a few heads? Besides. They are too busy stuffing ill gotten money into their pockets to notice that they are ***** the bed. - evo8ftw, on 08/05/2008, -14/+4HAAAAAAAAAAAA yes because Bush was the cause of Katrina. Damn him and his evil hurricane creator.
- subterfuge, on 08/05/2008, -2/+5@evo8ftw
bush was certainly not the cause of katrina, but he was the cause of the lack of aid. normally, the national GUARD guards the country and assists regions that have been devastated by natural disasters. but since the national guard was in iraq, new orleans suffered - Caffeinate, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Not just New Orleans...it actually passed over Hancock County Mississippi. Now they are telling us that in the event of another catastrophic hurricane, ice is a luxury, despite the fact that we had no gas, no roads to travel on, no electricity to refrigerate medicines and certainly no water. We have a generator, but when you can only buy 5 gallons, it has to go into the car to even get anywhere.
If another one comes, I have no damn idea what we are going to do without ice.
I guess most of the nation missed that little anecdote - no ice for hurricane survivors because it is just way too luxurious of a thing to have, despite having no refrigeration, electricity or water.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 08/05/2008, -2/+11Hey. We can't have that unAmerican talk. You had best wear a flag pin lest the special police find you to be a traitor.
- PolishLogic, on 08/05/2008, -11/+6I missed the news about Bush ordering the anthrax letters.
- Nevarius, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7(niger)Yellowcake papers were forged also. Most likely one of the biggest pushes used to obtain war, if not the final push to get their agenda underway.

- BishkekBuddy, on 08/05/2008, -4/+42The unbelievable speed with which he was put on trial and then put to death spoke volumes to me - there was a whole lot about his relationship with the US and in particular to our ruling junta that they didn't want to come out... forging a letter was a tiny little thing to do to ensure the American people would never know the truth. Besides... they had learned how to forge a letter and refined their techniques after they blew it on the yellowcake letter...
- mathewsj, on 08/05/2008, -31/+3utterly inaccurate like all from Suskind, google 'Ron Suskind' the unsubstatiated stories tells it all.
- jvill, on 08/05/2008, -2/+25Why don't you give us a little more than that?
Because I Googled Ron Suskind and the first three pages were all highly credible interviews, numerous references to him as a "terrorism expert", and several other experts referring to him as an extremely credible journalist.
I guess that would make your claims... "unsubstatiated". - BXRWXR, on 08/05/2008, -3/+9mathew, you just substantiated FAIL.
- ketemphor, on 08/05/2008, -2/+4Suskind specifically cites the former head of the CIA's Near East Division, Rob Richer, as one source, and the former lead of the Iraqi Operations Group, John Maguire, as another. Richer was specifically sourced as saying he heard orders to produce this forgery from George Tenet.
- FairNUnBalanced, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Repeat the Bush pattern. Deny the corruption, deny the war mongering, deny the incompetence, deny the disregard for the constitution, deny the torture, then attack and discredit the messenger. - redcolumbine, on 08/05/2008, -2/+14That might be the biggest NEWS on this item - or in general - lately!
- Kizilbash, on 08/05/2008, -4/+30Check this too: "One thing I haven't seen mentioned with regard to the attempt to implicate Iraq in the anthrax scare in fall of 2001 is the reason Iraq was hard to rule out as a source. It was that it clearly originated in labs in Ames, Iowa. The Reagan administration had permitted the provision to Iraq of anthrax precursors . . . from Ames, Iowa. That is, the Republican Party was proliferating weapons of mass destruction to Saddam Hussein in the 1980s, even though his regime was known to have deployed poison gas against Iran and against Iraqi Kurds. And, because Iraqi anthrax would have shown the Ames ancestry if analyzed, a foreign provenance-- however unlikely-- could not be ruled out by investigators.
In the intelligence world, Iraqi anthrax, given Iraq by Washington, showing up in the US would have been called "blowback"-- the word for a covert operation that goes rogue and ends up harming the original sponsor. But even the inability to rule Iraq out was a form of blowback. Reagan and Rumsfeld muddied the waters for terrorism investigators by giving WMD to terrorist regimes."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LwMTjeu5f4 - duckley, on 08/05/2008, -3/+33“The White House had concocted a fake letter from Habbush to Saddam, backdated to July 1, 2001,” Suskind writes. “It said that 9/11 ringleader Mohammad Atta had actually trained for his mission in Iraq – thus showing, finally, that there was an operational link between Saddam and al Qaeda, something the Vice President’s Office had been pressing CIA to prove since 9/11 as a justification to invade Iraq. There is no link.”

- Waiting2awake, on 08/05/2008, -2/+9The problem is, and I feel fairly safe in saying this - if it is true that the neo-cons "took over" the republican side - why don't I see republicans fighting against the neo-cons? I see passing remarks(And I have made them myself) about how neo-cons are not republicans - but that leaves me blank when I wonder why they aren't fighting against the neocons? The democrats aren't because they are in on it - if the republicans aren't then they must be in on it too, or too frightened to fight for the country in which case they are useless in their role.

“After the searing experience of being in the Nixon White House, Cheney developed a view that the failure of Watergate was not the break-in, or even the cover-up, but the way the president had, in essence, been over-briefed. There were certain things a president shouldn’t know – things that could be illegal, disruptive to key foreign relationships, or humiliating to the executive.
“They key was a signaling system, where the president made his wishes broadly known to a sufficiently powerful deputy who could take it from there. If an investigation ensued, or a foreign leader cried foul, the president could shrug. This was never something he'd authorized. The whole point of Cheney’s model is to make a president less accountable for his action. Cheney’s view is that accountability – a bedrock feature of representative democracy – is not, in every case, a virtue.”- Reynardine, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2Another reason why "President Cheney" is a *good* consequence of impeachment: if he's in charge, he's accountable, and he can be caught.

Not much of an attack here unless you consider it an attack on piss-poor writing skills. If you want people to read your article, it helps when it's well-written. Digg is hopeless.
- Waiting2awake, on 08/05/2008, -3/+5There is no such thing in American politics as political sides - so many are waking up to that fact. The recent election of the democrat congress dispelled any illusion of a two party system for anyone paying attention.
There is mounds and mounds of evidense against Bush and his cabal, but a court is where you have to present said evidense and "That is off the table", and was from the start....
But hey - if you are feeling good about this, fret not! For in a little while Obama will be given the role, and he will build upon all the nice things Bush has done - but have his own special twist on it(Must keep up divisions of the ignorant) illiciting calls of socialism, communism and the like from those currently cheering these courses of actions...Never realizing they are the makers of their demise
It is an illusion to keep you under control. Be smarter than that. Understand there are two parties in the American system. Politicians and the masses. When Bush was talking about getting "them", those them were YOU! When Bush was talking about protecting our freedoms - you weren't included in "Our" - that was the politicians "our". When Obama is doing the talking - same thing, for neither will say anything they aren't told to say.
Presidents don't give orders, they take them. At least in America, and probably world wide now.- rthakidn, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2@waiting2awake. Though, I think we can agree on pretty much everything you say, I tend not to be as cynical. Politicians are different only in their labels, but ultimately they all serve their own interests, either directly or indirectly. Hopefully, some day we might have an alternative to the Dems and Reps, because right now, there's not a hill of beans bit of difference between them. Holding power is their goal and they'll say anything and stop at nothing to do it.

- Caffeinate, on 08/05/2008, -1/+5In the flurry of books being released, we are hearing things that the country should have been aware of *years* ago - not when it is lucrative to get book contracts. These authors need to be put on the stand and questioned since they are so aware of crimes that took place. The fact that it seems to be a "conspiracy of the week" book club, with "***** of the week" writers who suddenly give a damn about the American nation and its public should piss everyone within voter range off.
If you have enough information to write a book about it, you had enough to go to the judiciary.

- rearlgrant, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4I'm inclined to give some credence to Suskind's claims.
What still amazes me is that, after twelve years of enforcing the no-fly zones, and essentially keeping Iraq under a magnifying glass, the Bush administration had the audacity to claim that Saddam could amass such a huge amount of WMDs, right under the nose of our military. That's similar to saying that the military fell asleep on the job, or that maybe they are incompetent -- I refuse to accept that they did or are.
The fact that the initial Bush administration included members of the PNAC, the group who sent Clinton a letter in 1998 urging him to oust Saddam, also lends credibility to Suskind's allegations. The early Bush administration was made up of people who already had the burning desire to invade Iraq, and did whatever it took to further their agenda, at the cost of the lives of many U.S. soldiers, many more innocent Iraqis, and whatever remaining moral authority the United States had at the time.
In my opinion, the gang responsible for the invasion should be charged with one count of murder for each U.S. soldier that has died in Iraq, and one additional count of murder for each innocent Iraqi citizen that has died as a result of the invasion.

The only pattern being repeated here is that Bush lied and created 9/11. People will say and do anything for money, which is why I have a hard time believing anyone's words when they are paid quite a bit to write them.

- ErickStevenson, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2I agree to some argument on why do they only talk about this stuff now? Profit? Maybe, can't argue there. But now seems to be the best time, do you think anyone would believe this guy if he release this during the height of the Administrations hold on the country? Most likely not as many people would, and the media would surely help discredit this. Now with the current position of the administration, would people believe this man now? Well I wouldn't say 100% but this would atleast attract more attention and more scrutiny than before and not be brushed aside so easily, seeing what the administration has been doing lately.
For me, I really don't care if they release any new info about the corruption of the Bush Administration now or some time in the near future, as long as we get the truth, more people's eyes will be open and we can hopefully make sure this does not happen again.
Who knows, maybe with enough of these coming out, our new government will have the balls to charge someone with these crimes. I sure as hell don't see McCain touching the Bush and Co. with a 1000 feet pole anytime in his future. - krnldmp, on 08/05/2008, -1/+5All the people saying the Bush Administration will never be prosecuted, I have some questions for you. You people are an endless source of amusement. Despite being snookered TWICE last week with the McClellen talking-points story and the bogus Obama note-in-the-Western-Wall story, you'll still believe anything that is anti-American.
Oh, and it was Obama, who first compared himself to Paris Hilton, back in 2005.
"There's nothing exotic or complicated about how phenoms are made in Washington, and, more to the point, how they are broken. Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame. I've already had an hour and a half. I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse."

Second, repeating mantras is what liberals DO. The government blew up the WTC, Bush lied, and on and on and on.
Rinse and repeat? It is liberals whose brains are washed.
Now that you've attacked me, how about attacking what I said? Did you liberals or did you not fall for THREE false stories last week? If you were fish, you'd all be laying on the bottom of a boat, because you swallow the hook every time. - FairNUnBalanced, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: neoconservatism
U.S. political movement. It originated in the 1960s among conservatives and some liberals who were repelled by or disillusioned with what they viewed as the political and cultural trends of the time, including leftist political radicalism, lack of respect for authority and tradition, and hedonistic and immoral lifestyles. Neoconservatives generally advocate a free-market economy with minimum taxation and government economic regulation; strict limits on government-provided social-welfare programs; and a strong military supported by large defense budgets. Neoconservatives also believe that government policy should respect the importance of traditional institutions such as religion and the family. Unlike most conservatives of earlier generations, neoconservatives maintain that the United States should take an active role in world affairs, though they are generally suspicious of international institutions, such as the United Nations and the World Court, whose authority could intrude upon American sovereignty or limit the country's freedom to act in its own interests. See also conservatism. - FairNUnBalanced, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3To disambiguate from neo-con for you... A true conservative would not have posted a half trillion dollar budget defect. A true conservative would not have spied on american citizens private phone calls without a warrant or a court order, and a true conservative would not have lied and forged his way in to invading a soverign nation. The rest of your tirade is a hateful simplistic rant, constructed of silly straw man positions that you can take up with another Digger.

I'm going to have to say yes.
That Dick Cheney set up an entire intelligence gathering apparatus of his own, outside the CIA, and reporting up through the military chain of command to him in attempt to show that there actually were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and that Saddam had a role in 9/11?
Or the report that the white house wanted the CIA to forge documents to achieve those ends?
