- notque, on 11/30/2007, -1/+164It was blatant and does bring up a good point. The YouTube debates big addition is that corporations that own media can ask questions they wouldn't get away with without youtube.
Since they pick all the questions, they are still completely in control but they can decide what is asked all the same. Brilliant act of propaganda.
I predict we will see more of this user generated content held up as news by MSM. They will then push the blame on us instead of them, but with them still picking what is shown and in what context to give us the illusion of control and input. - Elderon, on 11/30/2007, -2/+50being turned on or off to a candidate by their supporters is ***** stupid in my opinion. Try basing it off the candidates themselves, not on people they have no control over.
I agree, this was blatant propaganda. I don't see how they could have picked any worse questions. - BrapAllgood, on 11/30/2007, -0/+38I think that a REAL 'YouTube debate' would be ON YouTube and would have candidates recording answers and posting them as responses to the questions posted. No interruptions, no time limits (other than people's attention spans), no bickering, no *****.
- notque, on 11/30/2007, -0/+31It would be the user content version of "some people say", a weasel term used to get away with asking questions, or stating things that are biased.
- FriskDown, on 11/30/2007, -0/+30I wish that I could digg you up twice for that observation.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+32That was just a huge slap in the face when I watched it during the debate. I want to say I don't understand why they would give that video the green light, but I should know better. Ron Paul is not popular with corporate media, regardless of whatever political slant it has.
Its just ***** *****, and I'm tired of it. - dotlizard, on 11/30/2007, -1/+31This is insidious and scary -- historically we have come to expect debates to be moderated, structured, and have a well-thought out set of rules that's been agreed upon prior to going in. These new formats in which "anything goes" do exactly as notgue stated above, give the corporate sponsors get editorial control and the ability to do what a structured, proper debate would never allow.
Let the candidates do the town hall meetings on YouTube, sure, but don't call it a presidential debate and then ask loaded questions that are designed to manipulate the audience's perceptions and the candidate's responses. - FriskDown, on 11/30/2007, -0/+18There, now I did digg you up twice.
- KingBunny, on 11/30/2007, -0/+16I'd be angry if he didn't manage to turn it around... but when you're given a CLEARLY biased question, and then you turn it around, it makes you look all the more awesome.
- perish, on 11/30/2007, -3/+19To your point, they smear him all day long on TV and cut him off after 15-20 seconds in his "30 second" responses.
So if not there (big media), and not here (nu/social-ite media), then where? Indy zines, blogs, radio where one preaches directly to the choir day in and day out? - inactive, on 11/30/2007, -3/+18I wish the media would understand that Ron Paul has developed an invisible coating of awesome. Any type of mud slinging or ***** will just just drip off of him without any repercussion to his image.
- actorboy, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13The author clearly doesn't understand the meaning of the phrase 'crazy like a fox.'
- Frostman3D, on 11/30/2007, -3/+16ALL YOUR VOTES ARE BELONG TO RON PAUL!
- manifestdata, on 11/30/2007, -2/+13Did anyone not see this coming? Unfortunately, at my job, headline news is on ALL day. The first time I saw the commercial for this debate, I knew it was ***** from the start. CNN themselves even stated that they had already received twice the amounts of submissions as the democratic debate days before the actual debate. Anyone care to guess how many were actually created by Youtube users? I'll guess the ratio of CNN created videos and actual videos to be about 50/50.
I personally have yet to decide on any candidate but not CNN, they have already chosen their candidate, Hilary. CNN has sunken so low that they are even bashing other Democrats besides Hilary. Check out some clips about Obama, Edwards, etc. from CNN (I'm sure there are some on youtube). It is kind of rediculous. Oh and their "political analysts", ***** retarded. Their analysts were analyzing the debate and actually felt that the Guiliani Yankee/Red Sox fiasco was newsworthy. WHO THE ***** HIRES THESE PEOPLE.
I got a wierd idea, lets ask people who know what the ***** they are talking about to ask the questions, not some prepube wearing a diaper and a darth vader helmet (though it is a cool costume). - Authustian, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Ah, I see you've been studying NLP. Well done sir. Funny how often it shows up in the MSM, isn't it. What's scary though is how effective it is on about 90% of the people out there...
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -2/+11CNN is owned by the same mega-corporations that just want to make more money. Economics 101, the fundamental reason of existence of any company is the making of profit. And something else, you are NOT their target, their target costumer is ADVERTISERS. If they can fool ADVERTISERS that you watch them, they won. If they convince ADVERTISERS that you are too young or smart or anything to bring to them more money, you are nothing to them.
- mdepaul, on 11/30/2007, -7/+16Did any of you actually listen/watch the question. The guy was a Ron Paul supporter who said that Paul wouldn't win because the Republican Party wouldn't let him and wanted to know if he was gonna run as an independent.
I know this is gonna be buried like every comment not kissing the ass of Ron Paul but whatever, I hope you guys read it first. - kaelyiesta, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Actually I did watch, and I agree that CNN has no integrity left. This question had no place in a debate on who would make the best candidate. This was a blatant attempt to marginalize him. Your inability to see that is disappointing.
- cryptomystic, on 11/30/2007, -4/+12No real Ron Paul supporter would ever dream of asking such an awful question like that, nice try
- SiNN4R, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8He wants competitive currency. That way if the government prints money for wars the average citizen can fall back on gold backed currency. People deserve choice.
- MrVictor, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I agree. CNN must have hired Jerry Springer to run their debates. People with IQs greater than room temp want REAL ***** debates! Where's the outrage?
- sgtpppr, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Plausible deniability. There are tens of thousands of questions submitted covering nearly every topic. CNN picks the ones it wants to ask. If there is any negative response because of the questions they asked, they simply say 'we asked YOUR questions'. The facts are they hand picked questions from a massive pool and obviously ranked and promoted specific candidates.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8What's even worse is that the guy who asked this question is NOT a Ron Paul supporter, but a Richardson supporter. I think Powerline or one of the other extreme right blogs had something about it yesterday.
- honeymustardn, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7What was she supposed to be doing? Grinning? She was just listening to the man speak.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I have said this before, but it applies to you too. I guess the stupid tree is still bearing fruit. Lets start with your "argument" in order of appearance:
Old....ok, he's old....so are most presidential candidates
insane.......no...he clearly understands right from wrong and real from not real
racist.......not likely. He showed up to a black sponsored PBS debate. Rudy, Romney and McCain all failed to show up.
Supports Genocide in Darfur.........um......supporting a non intervention policy where our aid would be used as bargaining power by warlords is not supporting genocide. It supports our non involvement as a nation. Nothing says you cannot join a foreign legion and fight for them if you so choose.
Wants do destroy our economy.......we're doing that fine without him. Without a hard backing, our currency will soon be worth less than toilet paper. Inflation is killing us, and we are rearranging numbers to make it look otherwise. Have you bought milk or gas lately? The prices are a ton higher. The Canuck buck is worth more than the US Greenback.
Destroy our health.....You want healthcare run by the same people who ***** up Katrina? SURE THING. I want control over it myself. - SiNN4R, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6I couldn't agree with you more.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -2/+8This is the question I'd like to see:
"Mr Ghoulitranny, everyone knows that you are a crooked politician who cheats on his wife and missapropriates taxpayer money. When you fail to get the republican nomination because of the millions of people that support Ron Paul, will you support Ron Paul for the presidential nomination, or will you scurry back into your cockroach hole?" - notque, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6That's why digg is so important. I usually take a ton of ***** when I say that, but it's true. Without mediums to allow us to get out information that we feel is important, we are isolated and trapped within whatever MSM wants to give us.
I consider digg activism. This is real life, as odd as that sounds. This is communicating with other human beings on issues of importance.
This is national debate. Yes, it also has pictures of spaghetti monsters in pumpkin pie, but that doesn't take away from the very real discussions that occur on here every day. - andshewas, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Amen. I don't have cable, so I didn't get to see it. I'm so tired of these "shows" anyway. I'd love to see a real, actual debate, with real, important questions posed to each and every one of the candidates.
- dracostimpy, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Why should YouTube be the only website to have its own co-opted debate? Let's petition MSNBC to have a Digg debate, where questions are created by AND VOTED ON by the digg community, and in that way the questions that truly matter to the internet community will be put forth to the candidates.
mailto:letters@msnbc.com?subject=To the Editor - UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7At least we're safe on Digg, for now. Cut out the middle-man (The MSM).
- an0nym0uz, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7hmm... CNN as a propaganda tool, like thats new...
- Frozenpython, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6I would bet that this question was done by someone within CNN and/or planted by them. I was appalled when I saw this come up as a "good" question for Dr. Paul.
- fungible, on 11/30/2007, -4/+9Um, what? The guy was a Ron Paul SUPPORTER who obviously lives in the real world. The guy who wrote this article can't even spell correctly, much less understand politics.
1. No, as much support as Paul has, and it is impressive, he still does not have much of a chance... yet. Even Paul himself has admitted that his candidacy is more about changing the tone of the conversation than actually winning.
2. "Crazy like a fox" is a compliment, dumbass.
3. "If Paul is not a serious candidate then why waste everyone’s time and even have him on the TV show?" You could say that about 80% of the candidates on both sides. But they still show up, and there's nothing "unserious" about running as an independent.
4. God, people are so sensitive. If you get all upset because Ron Paul had to answer a "tough question" -- that's like all the idiots getting upset because a Hillary supporter got to ask a question. Was every question on the show supposed to be a softball? Is that what you people really want? - UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5"Awesome" question? That question was probably one of the worst I've seen in any debate this year. And the fact that CNN chose it specifically makes the situation even worse.
- Bridea, on 11/30/2007, -3/+7It was great - definitely worth watching the video clip.
- Groovemaster, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4It goes far deeper than that.
The corporations that own the media are the same corporations that run the military-industrial complex, and they need consistent global conflict to thrive financially (hence the bogus "war on terror").
Thus, they need people in power who will ensure the USA stays in a constant state of war, which makes Ron Paul (like John Lennon, JFK, MLK and anyone else who dares to stand up for peace) their enemy. - Drlite, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6Down with the Nwo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- zorpscorp, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4we need a way to fight this propaganda...
- scubasteve377, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4You're entire argument falls apart once you realize that it's the corporations and their lobbyists that write the laws that Ron Paul argues against to begin with, and that these laws simply shield corporations from financial consequences of abusing customers in the marketplace by limiting or completely eliminating their competition. The regulations that Paul criticizes and that you are defending are examples of corporatism, also known as corporate fascism. If you were really as educated in economics as you seem to be pretending to be, you would know that corporatism is the only thing that gives corporations the power abuse customers and engage in unethical business practices without facing consequences from consumers as they take their business elsewhere. Read Mises and learn about Austrian economics and about free markets versus corporatism, then come back and tell us about Econ 101.
- dizilbdog, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4I'll be Honest I think Ron Paul would be great, but with all the Corruption and our Government and Media. I mean you see nothing about Ron Paul on Fox News or CNN really ever, and Hate to Say it most of the Public watch these two stations. I'd like a change, but I don't know how it can come about???
- Bridea, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6Ron Paul basically shot off statistics showing that, as a Republican, he's been doing quite well. He plans to continue as a Republican candidate.
- dime, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4"No one knows who is going to get the Republican party nomination at this point. It is not fair for anyone to “know” who is or who is not going to win."
Some crack analytic thinking with this guy. Case's been solved, boys!
Will Kucinich win the Democratic primary? I know soapboxes are all the rage here on Digg, but I think we all know the answer.
"What would people have said if a question mocked one of the other candidates this way, e.g. ‘Mr. Romney I hope you’re callous like a camel’s knees,’ or ‘Mr. Giuliani I hope you’re crooked like a snake.’ This is plain rude."
I'm not sure if the "writer" is aware, but "crazy like a fox" is a compliment. It suggests you're far smarter than people mistake you for, and that will cause people to underestimate you, and for you to eventually win. Even if you didn't know that, though.... callous like a camel's knees? What the *****? - parabolee, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6I never said people shouldn't post Ron Paul related stories did I? I made an amusing comment on the new style of RP "Spam". You can't argue too many Paul supporters submit stories over and over.
- BeforeSputnik, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else notice that the person who asked the question, Mark Strauss, also had a question in the Democratic Youtube debate? Pretty small odds for that; I wonder if he has a CNN connection (could be just my conspiracy-theory radar working overtime).
- xenuxenuts, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4The point is that CNN had so many questions to pick from that they could just about ask anything THEY wanted while doing so under the ruse of being non-biased. That might be caught by some people, but certainly not by most who don't even know "how to turn on the internet".
- exomni, on 11/30/2007, -2/+5Ron Paul's response was excellent.
I'm liking this man more and more by the minute. - Cnat, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3I'm a Paul supporter and don't really mind the question. He can't really say he'll pursue a independent run without angering the base. But I think it makes him look presidential and important and in all sincerity I think it may be our best shot in a Hillary-Giuliani election.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/30/2007, -2/+5Cooper at the end: "I take that as a no". Cooper is such a douche.
- mboudro, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Did everyone forget that politics consists of nothing BUT propaganda?
