- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26There is no way that a real investigation will ever take place. The government has obviously been aware of what Blackwater has been doing. There have been formal complaints from the family members of murdered unarmed civilians. There have been complaints from the Iraqi government. There have been complaints from religious groups. There have been comments by active service army and marine personnel. There have been many more than 5 incidents, but none will be truly investigated because Erik Prince managed to get immunity from US Martial law and from Iraqi civil law.
There will never be a trial. The government will string this out and tell Blackwater to control is operatives better until the public forgets who Blackwater is. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I really have no problem with Iraqis shooting Blackwater soldiers on sight, if these ***** came to my country and pretended to be the law I'd be ***** livid.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8This is why we need to let Iraqis know that Blackwater is fair game, unlike real soldiers who have no choice, Blackwater guards choose to be there and can quit any time. They deserve whatever they get.
- Observant1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6BLACKWATER personnel are highly paid and do horrendous war crimes, unaccountable for hiding behind the banner of a corporation, murder a bunch of civiliand and hightail it back to the green zone leaving enlisted military there as scapegoats, hostage to the justified anger, and human shields catching all the bullets. BLACKWATER gets its funding from basically the same place as our military, no bid contracts to parent corporation Halliburton (CHENEY!)
and "corporate welfare". the US military and the people of Iraq ought to declare WAR upon Blackwater, and the people responsible here at home for them being there, should be tried for treason immediately. - bremstrong, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5To succeed in Iraq, the invading forces would have needed to win the hearts and minds of a large majority of the people. There was a window early on where this could have happened, but it is gone now, and this sort of indiscriminate killing will ensure that window never opens again.
If the U.S. war planners were less inept, they would have treated the whole exercise like a U.S. presidential election and tried to win the Iraqi people over to what they were doing. The George Bush team's strength is in campaigning not governing. If they had applied this strength to Iraq it could have easily worked out with much less bloodshed.
Any reason not to leave now? The invasion has removed Saddam Hussein, ensured that Iraq has no nuclear or chemical weapons, basically the U.S. forces have won. - kernel16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Such a cliche evil name to boot... Might as well have been Umbrella Corp. Every time I read an article title with Blackwater in it, it always sounds like something out of a movie.
- niviche, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2but apparently you can get away with making a fool out of grammar.

- Marijuana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Pukufek, you my friend are genius.
- badollet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Blackwater's business plan calls for expanding operations inside the US, and they were already active in Katrina. They will be totally unaccountable to us. They want to be the new brownshirts I guess. (source: Naomi Wolf, End of America)
- Lorwik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Corporate mercenaries shouldn't be in Iraq. Further, corporations shouldn't be allowed to have their own military, what does the future hold is we allow this?
- steomith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I do agree that Blackwater should be fair game. "unlike real soldiers who have no choice" , but I do have a problem with this statement. The soldiers have volunteered and are able to, under the armed forces oath, which states that they are to defend the constitution and the law of the land (not the President) and since this war violates the law, they can refuse to fight. Also, under the Geneva Conventions, as a result of the Nuremberg Trials, the excuse of committing illegal acts of aggression just because its your orders, is not defendable. German officers tried that and failed.
- Shaman760, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I am from the south and I know some people who went to work for BW. With this knowledge I am very surprised that there are not more incidents of this nature. Deer hunter types that somehow grew bored with their quarry.
No one should feel bad about these guys losing their lives. They signed up for it and death is something they seek readily. - ichbinladen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3The incident where Blackwater fired at US Marines takes the cake. Those ***** wannabe cowboys deserve to fry.
- bitspace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Holy *****, what butchery. I actually spent 30 seconds trying to read your comment and finally gave up and buried it.

NPR- Blackwater Eyes Domestic Contracts in U.S. (podcast and text)
Their thinking is simple. The Iraq war won't last forever, so if the company wants to stick around, it needs an alternate business plan. Work here at home is one solution. "The only difference between Blackwater in Iraq and Blackwater in New Orleans is that they are mercenaries in Iraq and they are vigilantes in New Orleans," ..."media blackout" - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If I were a Blackwater mercenary in Iraq and showed moral outrage about what has happened and continues to happen. If I then presented my resignation and said that I want my guaranteed ride back to the States, I think that I very well might suffer a traumatic accident within the next few hours.
Remember that this company is above the law in Iraq, it might not be so easy for their operatives to quit, and it would certainly be very dangerous for them to speak out - obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't worry, Condoleezza Rice will take care of the cover-up ...I mean the investigation.
- mazeriana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There are terrorist camps in the US run by the US government.
- keitarofujiwara, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have been refraining myself from saying this ever since the first Blackwater issue came out... but I just can't stand the hypocrisy. All these Blackwater "scandals" appearing recently are just another way of the government, and a great part of us, to individualize the collective fault of US, as a whole, for the atrocities committed in Iraq. Its so tragic. Not acting in such cases is equivalent to being an accomplice. Tragic.
- theoallardyce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That may be true but you try telling that to your superior officer next to a couple of armed military police. Soldiers take orders from the chain of command, its very difficult to break out of that if you feel something is wrong.
Blackwater on the other hand can resign on the spot, maybe they could get some pay docked for not giving notice but you sure as hell cant shoot them on the spot. - steomith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You would think such common sense would prevail. But Blackwater's contract with the US (one of about 140 private "security" firms in Iraq) is specifically written as to give them immunity from any other country's laws (there is a word for this, but I forget) but the U.S.'s. In fact, the "Axis of Good" troops operate in the same manner in Iraq. The US disregards all Iraqi laws, even though they tried installing a "favorable" prime minister. Just look at their previous election and the US's reaction. Any probes or courtmartials are merely an effort to appear to care. Just part of the illegal and aggressive invasion and occupation of a sovereign country.
- pseudologue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I was about to come in here and say the same thing. It's such an ominous name to begin with.

Once they have established baseline facts, I look forward to hearing their recommendations on how to protect our people while furthering our foreign policy objectives.” Do notice, it doesn't mention the protection of the Iraqis!!!!!! Go eat a banana, condi!
