- superfusion, on 10/10/2007, -4/+164a) $833,673,316 = 3 hundred and 16 dollars + 673 thousand dollars + 833 million dollars.
b) ~$800 million + ~$100 million = ~ a BILLION dollars.
c) the article doesn't contain the word "trillion"
d) Wal-Mart's revenue is about $350 billion a year. That's about a third of a trillion. - parkerconrad, on 10/10/2007, -5/+97Moron, that's almost 1 Billion, not 1 Trillion.
- grav80bong, on 10/10/2007, -22/+110Maybe I got a bit ahead of myself with the title since those numbers don't represent Blackwater's profit, rather just the money the government has spent on their services. So to rephrase: American taxpayers have spent close to $1 Trillion on Blackwater in Iraq since 2004. And their should = there. Late night submissions are always trouble.
- ChrisAlbon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+78In other news, basic math education on Digg is found inadequate.
- grav80bong, on 10/10/2007, -6/+53And I misread the numbers. Bury this article so hard.
- seaniepants, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39$833,673,316 = almost 1 billion. Not a trillion.
- Lixie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31Caught that too. Maybe we need to spend about a trillion dollars teaching our kids to count.
- grav80bong, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31Ugh...I usually submit quality and it goes nowhere. I submit crap, then tell people to bury it, and naturally it front pages. ***** me. It is a very good article, just my submission sucks.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+34No, shooting innocent civilians is evil, you stupid *****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -23/+45Blackwater and other US security forces open fire on innocent people in Iraq for sport. Iran is no threat to the US people and the mainstream media which is owned and controlled by the military industrial complex would like nothing more than full scale all out war with Iran to begin.
Everyone must listen to Ahmadinejad's speech on your own in full without bias spin and realize they are no threat to us. The US Government has proven to be a much greater threat than Iran could ever be. The selling of Iran as an enemy must end now. They are an Islamic peace loving people. Sure they don't allow homosexuality but thats been the same for thousands of years. You want them to suddenly allow it or something? This has nothing to do with the fact the IAEA has proven they are not (and cannot) make a nuclear weapon. Also the evidence is very shady that Iran is helping kill American soldiers. In fact coming from the Bush administration it should automatically be questioned. Iran has no interest in killing a few soldiers in Iraq with road side bombs. Think about it. What would they gain? Stop this illegal coming war with Iran. They did nothing wrong. - WolverineBlue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17This just in: nearly 6 billion dead in Iraq.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I take it you meant "1 billion" rather than 1 trillion?
- pfeester, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Buried, for "trillion" instead of "billion"
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15And this is money coming from our government, our taxes, money that is not going towards the enlisted troops.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16You know, what I don't get is that people saw the inaccurate title, supposedly read the article, as well as your comment stating that it is inaccurate and actually asking for it to be buried.. and yet it still MAKES IT TO THE FRONT PAGE!
Digg's system has just failed. - rimmel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17$800,000,000 is not almost 1 Trillion... :P
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15You could have just said one dollar for every one Iraqi dead.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Don't read the article whatever you do. It's easier to react to headlines.
- kick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14$833m, kids. Million.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12hahaha, your self dialog almost makes this worth digging
- asdfuiop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14I guarantee you this article gets 4000 diggs before people even read it
- quaxon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10this is the same kind of idiot who denounces using tax money for things like healthcare and helping people but will gladly bend over and ***** out taxes to fund war and to build new weapons.
- amsterdamordeth, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15Trillions or not, the sad part is, when the real tragedy comes, our tax funded military will be broke, and blackwater will have a pocket full of cash to pay for it's new minions.
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Unfortunately this is to late. Now every single political story will have "State gave Blackwater a trillion dollars!"
- richfiddler11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9If you read the article, Blackwater has received about $935 million from the DoD and US State Department combined. Forget the stupid headline, that's a huge amount of money for a company that was nearly out of business before the Iraq war started, and most Americans never heard of before last week.
- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19What does that work out to like $3.00 for every 3 Iraqis dead?
- synaesthesia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It was an easy enough mistake to make (well, not really but at least he owned up to it shortly after posting it). However, it sucks that this will almost undoubtedly make it to the Top Ten because people digg without reading what they're digging. It amazes me how often i'll click a Top Ten story, only to read in the first few comments that due to some misinterpretation or mistake the article is completely untrue.
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Who really gives a *****? It's still a metric *****-ton of taxpayer money.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7damn, and I thought this was going to be an ONION article
- billbacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This was probably posted by someone at Blackwater to make people think that $833 million isn't that much.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's interesting nonetheless. Fix it and resubmit it.
- murlox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What about those gov. people who own Blackwater's shares? Guess, those money go to their pocket too.
- bremstrong, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Besides the obvious problem that there has been no penalty to Blackwater for shooting innocent Iraqis, the real story is that even if the firm made $1,000,000,000 operating in Iraq, it is peanuts compared with the U.S. taxpayer's total expenditures on the war.
What have we gained, as a nation, for the $500,000,000,000 that has been spent? Iraq was not a threat to the U.S., had no weapons of mass destruction, was not involved in 9/11, and was not a base of operation for anti-U.S. terrorists.
What gain is there to balance all of the suffering and death that has resulted from this war, both Iraqi and US? I can't think of much. - tusseyd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I personally believe, that US Americans are unable to add numbers because, uh some people out their in our nation don't have math, and I believe that our education like in such as South Africa and uh the Iraq....
- vinwal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7You should not wish that on ANYONE. If it happens to you this will be the reason why.
- acarr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Those Blackwater guys make pretty good money there. Most are ex-Special ops soldiers. They don't have to pay taxes on the cash either.
- jlhoben, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Regular forces guys and gals are gettin screwed. Extended tours, real meat grinder, no leadership and then they have to see mercs over there operating without rules of engagement (and eroding public goodwill) making way way way way more than they do. And then people who speak out against the war are slammed for not supporting the troops?!!!
- Dolphinese, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Speaking of large sums of money ... what does that mean in terms of Solar Panel Power?
Energy Used (2004) = 3717000000000 kWh per year
Annual Energy per Panel = 1.35 kWh per day * 365 days = 492.75 kWh per year
Cost per Panel = $1000
Iraq War = 452673414 Panels
Annual Panel Energy = 452673414 * 492.75 kWh = 223054824748 kWh
Percentage = (223054824748 kWh / 3717000000000 kWh) * 100 = 6%
Planned military budget during the next five years is $2.75 trillion.
$2.75 trillion = 36% of energy needs met from solar panels.
While the article is in billions of dollars, it's still neat to think about what a trillion dollars could buy. - jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think the first clue that it was 800 million and not 800 billion is that the entire Iraq War has cost us about half a trillion dollars since 2003 so the number 800 billion since 2004 to one private contractor is incredibly ridiculous.
Also, that 800 million isn't just contracts for Iraq, but for things like Hurricane Katrina where they also managed to win a bunch of no bid contracts. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Hooray, Digg! A beacon of truth in a sea of lies! The light of knowledge in a fog of uncertainty!
Ha ha! Yeah.
*BURIED SO HARD* - Zakalwe2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Boy, that would be impressive, huh? Making more from contracts than has actually been spent on the entire war? Gotta say, that's pretty amazing. Seriously, though, 833 million is nothing to sneeze at.
- thescimitar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5vvtf:
Did you know that unlike many of the other forums you probably troll, digg allows us dopey moonbats to block trolls for... ever?
It's funny, because I don't block people with whom I disagree, just people who are looking for a fight.
Grow up. - neurosport, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8actually i think if u do the math its costing us upwards of $100,000 to kill every innocent iraqi and about 40 million to kill every american soldier
which means every soldier costs about as much as a stealth bomber plane
so an average american has to work for a full year to murder an innocent iraqi child lets say ... - NozE8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well maybe if you put the bong down before submitting :P
- Berkana, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11In other news, Americans don't know the place value system.
- blairslovechild, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4People throw around words like Moron rather too much, when sheltered by the anonymity of the Internet. The guy isn't so hot at Maths, but don't be so rude.
There's plenty of things in this world that are worse than being rubbish at Maths. Nothing quite as annoying, but plenty of things that are worse... - tryangles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You mean to tell me our contractors over there are really mercenaries? You mean Bushco sold me out? That's impossible, he's Christian isn't he!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Since when has our government ever been represented abroad by armed security contractors who have the right to shoot and kill civilians without either military or civilian oversight in America or the country where they are operating? Does that sound like the American way to do things, or the National Socialist way to do things? We are in a situation where there is no oversight to these security companies while we are involved in an insurgent struggle, supposedly trying to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis.
As for Iran, it has done very little against us considering the situation that they are in. What they have done is natural and understandable for a country with a history of American intervention in their affairs. Do you think that Iran should welcome our invasion and occupation of neighbors on both sides of them because they see that what we are doing is reasonable and just? I don't think so, the only reason that they might accept what is going on is because of the overpowering might of the US war machine. So they want us dead. Yup, so would I if the tables were turned. Does that mean that they pose a danger to our national security? Nope, especially not if we get our troops and come home.
The trouble with your whole argument is that you want our policies not only to be accepted, but you want other countries to recognize the correctness of our actions. Other countries in the Mideast will not do that because our actions are in violation of convention, decency, Christian doctrine and International law. On a moral level they are indefensible. If you want us to become the modern Roman Empire, then be brave enough to do so without prevarication, do it with the forthrightness of the Romans. Might is right. Period. Don't try to apply your hypocritical spin to make our conquests out to be moral.
You try to sound intelligent, but in order to back this administration's travesty you are employing rhetorical gymnastics that tie you in knots. - dcbebop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Funny, Facebook seems to think each of their people is worth 400 bucks a piece.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3it wasn't even formed until 1997 and its Security Consulting Division wasn't created until 2002n during the Iraq war as they joined the 60 or so other PMCs bidding for contracts
