Being in Congress almost demands unwavering loyalty to your party (especially in the House). Moderates and dissenters do *not* do well. Look how Joe Liberman was treated by Dems and Lincoln Chaffee by Rs. Both sides are demanding ideological loyalty and if you disagree, well by God you're not a "real" Democrat (Republican) and we'll work to defeat you in the next election.
Result? A legislative body full of people with extreme, my way or the highway views. And that's why they can't get anything done.
