- meese, on 07/27/2008, -23/+66Also, the foreign buyout of Budweiser (specifically, Anheuser Busch) by Inbev, which is going to cost tens of thousands of jobs in Missouri and elsewhere, is going to earn the McCains close to $1 million.
Let's see the media cover these two stories. - bullox, on 07/28/2008, -16/+45Wildlife really need to step up their campaign contributions.
- dumbducky, on 07/28/2008, -3/+21I certainly hope America is smarter than you.
- badqat, on 07/28/2008, -5/+21No, there are still way more left-wing activists on digg.com
- dumbducky, on 07/28/2008, -14/+30They gave money to McCain after he said he'd do something favorable for them, not before. I don't think you can say that the oil lobbyists bought McCain's position.
- mfc5200, on 07/28/2008, -5/+20So if I work for an industry, and a candidate openly talks in of favor on something that would help me... it would be considered a surprise if I donate money to him?
wow...thats a new low for digg... - Vhaeos, on 07/28/2008, -1/+15Old people are more greedy?
- laubscher, on 07/28/2008, -10/+23Good job referring to him as Hussein.
Why not just skip all the subtlety and just call him a towelhead or suicide bomber in stead? - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -18/+31Ahh big oil, they always spend their surplus fortunes such humanistic causes...
- EtherGnat, on 07/28/2008, -2/+14The only thing Obama has said about Pakistan is that if we know the whereabouts of high value targets and Pakistan refuses to help he would consider unilateral surgical strikes. In fact the US has already taken such actions, and the world didn't cease to rotate on its axis.
- SpinningHead, on 07/28/2008, -5/+16Thats kinda the point. McCain belongs to big oil and Obama doesn't.
- burchie2, on 07/28/2008, -20/+31This whole thing seems kind of B.S. Who else would they give money to, Obama?
I don't think that would help their cause. - laubscher, on 07/28/2008, -7/+17Oh, that's right. This is a political thread, so I should pander to a lower common denominator.
Biscuits, my previous post should've been read with a big "/sarcasm" at the end. I'm neither racist, bigoted or xenophobic. - lurkerz, on 07/28/2008, -4/+14"Big Oil." Is that term supposed to be a scare tactic? Big Oil is minuscule compared to foreign-government run, oil operations. It's about time we take some power away from the OPEC nations until our alternative energy solutions mature and become more widely adopted.
- michaelrsa, on 07/28/2008, -1/+10But... Dane Cook does suck balls, all he does is jump around.
- crapmatic, on 07/28/2008, -15/+24Have political leanings suddenly reversed on Digg or are the right-wing activists taking over the site? The positive and negative diggs on the comments here are really out of whack compared to a few months ago.
- vexingmodstwo, on 07/28/2008, -10/+18Is that a promise?
- deadlydentures, on 07/28/2008, -2/+9Uh....I think the oil industry just wants money. I think saying they want to kill our children and piss on our graves is a bit of a twist.
- Muyoso, on 07/28/2008, -5/+12No, i think people are just semi rational. You see, you give money to the candidates who you think will help you or your company the most, because you want him or her to get elected.
- Muyoso, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7And who will stop them? None other than Al Gore. Excelsior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- eggsovereasy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6Anyone is allowed to make campaign contributions, even you!! If there is a candidate who's views line up with yours or who you feel will get laws passed that benefit you then give them money.
- jcounterman, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7I am so sick of this argument. Just because there are millions of acres with leases doesn't mean those acres have oil or gas. Also, if they DO have oil or gas, it might not be economically or technically feasible to get it out of the ground.
The leases are purchased so that seismic or explratory drilling can be conducted. If oil / gas is found, it might only sit under 2 acres of the 1000 acre lease.
This myth that oil is everywhere, just waiting to be tapped, shows complete ignorance of where our natural resources come from or how they are produced. - deadlydentures, on 07/28/2008, -2/+8Currently in America, people have the right to financially support the candidates and parties they agree with. Oil companies have the same rights essentially, with some regulation.
- Fanboy88, on 07/28/2008, -5/+10At least Obama can articulate his thoughts in a stately manner. McBush can't even get his facts straight. Gee.
- angryfirelord, on 07/28/2008, -3/+8Right wing activists? Have you seen the front page lately? It's anything but!
Besides, it's not much fun and bit worthless trying to inject a conservative point of view on digg when you keep getting modded down to oblivion, especially for pointing out something wrong about Obama or liberals. - pell, on 07/28/2008, -4/+9Can someone please explain how accepting money like this is legal? Im seriously asking as I am ignorant to the subject and genuinely don't know.
- langdonalger, on 07/28/2008, -4/+9so our kids can see the price of gas drop a nickel for 2 weeks when they're 30.
- britt48, on 07/28/2008, -2/+7Show me the evidence, with some citations that drilling for oil offshore will lower gas prices.
- shaherazad, on 07/28/2008, -9/+14I ***** hate people like this. They come around every election and bitch about whoever becomes president.
It doesn't really matter who's president anyway, and it's just for 4 years. If you're so unhappy here that the figurehead of the government decided where you want to be, then you should leave and keep the bitching to yourself. - Fun4Two, on 07/28/2008, -2/+7People want drive to work period without spending a fortune. Thats what it all comes down to. They could care less about the intricate plots, twists, and turns of Washington DC or boardrooms across America.
- rabidjester, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6Cognitive dissonance. That or we're being flooded by one of the right wing blogs - it is election season, after all.
- Barackalypse, on 07/28/2008, -3/+7Did you expect they would give money to people that were hostile to their interests? And weren't you all complaining that these big oil companies didn't want to drill on any of the land they already had because they want to keep prices high?
- motivatedmama, on 07/28/2008, -4/+8Teachers union = Big oil. Huh. Who woulda thunk it?
- rz8472, on 07/28/2008, -9/+13No, Big Oil knows that it will take 8-10 years of building up the infrastructure to extract even one drop of oil from ANWR or offshore... all the while getting a fat federal subsidy check. Raising the CAFE standards is a far more economical and less environmentally harmful way of achieving even more results.
Drilling for more oil is akin to digging the needle deeper so you can find a good, non-calcified vein where you can inject those sweet, sweet drugs. - rock774, on 07/28/2008, -21/+25We can start drilling or we can just hang on the beach and watch China and other country's drill off of our shore's !!
- Chip53, on 07/28/2008, -4/+8They have to lease the land before they can even explore on it. If they don't find anything, the lease still stands. Look in up you punks. As for "big oil" giving money to McCain, GOOD! Maybe the damn gas prices will come down and stay down. You wanna develope "alternative" energy? Fine. Great. Just don't cut off the existing supplies. The only place the Dems want to drill is in our wallets.
- kylerg, on 07/28/2008, -20/+24Surprised?
- sinrtb, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6I think you are missing the point. Its not them supporting Mcain its Mcain supporting them that is at issue. Sure anyone can donate and its ok, its the fact that McCain is taking the money that is at issue.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5Right. And what's Pakistan gonna do? Say "no, you have to respect our rights to harbor terrorists?" I mean, they can say that, but they will instantly become a pariah state and the political and economic consequences for them would be devastating.
I think what's driving republicans crazy is that obama is talking realpolitik and making sensible arguments. Republicans talk tough but their proposed strategies make no sense and they inevitably lead to prolonged failure. Now Obama's making a perfectly reasonable suggestion: that we should go after Al Qaeda wherever it is instead of ***** around with Iraq and Iran, and Republicans are ***** the bed. - nxsty, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4Nobody said it was a suprise.
- FairDinkumMate, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5@angryfirelord - I just looked at your profile & expected to see the usual right-wing "Obama is an idiot, McCain is fantastic" rants, but I was VERY pleasantly surprised by your thought out & commonsense comments.
Unfortunately for you(& probably equally for a lot of liberals like myself) the vast majority of right-wing comments on Digg seem to come from the stereotypical "right is might, I'll defend & support anything my party says or does" type. These comments generally lack facts, logic or commonsense & in fact mostly don't even address the issue being discussed. That your well thought out comments are automatically dugg down because of this may be predictable but I think it's unfortunate.
Spririted, polite, well constructed debate is what democracy is based on & your comments history shows that you apply these principles.
So all I can say is - sorry! - Pittance, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5You are right howufinna. He only takes private donations from individuals.
- rthakidn, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4McCain- We think drilling our OWN oil is in our best interest.
Obama- I think we need to tax oil companies more, so we can research alternative energy.
Duh, who would you give to? - Muyoso, on 07/28/2008, -4/+8Baracks talent? What is that, reading off a teleprompter a speech another person wrote? Or is it just yelling change and hope over and over again, without ever saying what to change or what to hope for?
- FairDinkumMate, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5What do you mean "it could really hurt other nations as well. "?
Why do you think the US government is unpopular already? The US WILL impact on many other countries, regardless of who is elected. Bush has obviously had a much larger negative impact on many other countries(ironically on the US as well) than any previous president in living memory and you are correct in that it is likely that a McCain presidency would be just as if not more negative for the rest of the world. - mmmmmbiscuits, on 07/28/2008, -3/+6Just busting balls, man. I don't know the tag for that... /BB perhaps?
- blarch, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4The country is not *****, but pessimism is ***** the dollar and country.
- angryfirelord, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Thank you FairDinkumMate, it's nice to know that there are open minds on Digg. I agree that there are a lot of neo-conservatives who won't admit the failures of the GOP in front of them, but it seems that there are a lot of people on the left who can't accept any criticism whatsoever and digg any opposing thought down. Still, I'm sure once this election season ends, digg will become a little more balanced again.
- rthakidn, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Either a) you don't know what your talking about regarding a two year supply and a 10 year delivery date, and big oil can deliver sooner and longer. Thus the increased contributions.
Or
b) if you're correct big oil has nothing to gain from the drilling and the donations were not necessarily linked to McCains suggestion of drilling.
I can't see anything sinister here. - LunaticFringe, on 07/28/2008, -10/+13No, I've noticed that too...
