- ncurses, on 04/13/2008, -18/+3091.3m is ridiculously little for a presidential candidate
- inactive, on 04/13/2008, -44/+252They pretend to be just like you and me, but there is only one candidate in this race that can come close to making that assertion without causing widespread nausea. Barack Obama.
- pstroll, on 04/13/2008, -17/+201Bill Clinton was only worth 700k when he was elected in '92.
- jp12380, on 04/13/2008, -6/+116Ajusted for inflation, Bill and Barack aren't too far off.
- sarcasticmango, on 04/13/2008, -11/+104Jesus. My neighbors are worth more than him.
- Snakedal337, on 04/13/2008, -3/+70Mitt is worth 202 million!? Wow
- pintomp3, on 04/13/2008, -6/+71didn't he recently finish paying off his student loans too?
- TheThirdLevel, on 04/13/2008, -15/+68According to Hillary & McCain, its no doubt Obama. With this info, not only is that claim false, but its ***** ridiculous. McCain has 40 million, how the ***** can he claim Obama is an elitist?
- treelovinhippie, on 04/13/2008, -12/+64Why the ***** should $1.3m be "ridiculously little for a presidential candidate"?
Can't you see that for the past few decades it has only been the rich up for candidacy. This is not how a democracy should work. It should be whoever is best for the job and operates in the interests of the people. Not those with money.
I don't really give a ***** which candidate is "less elitist" or whatever (frankly, they all seem to be millionaires). I just think we need to take money out of politics. Ask yourself how many presidential candidates have been or are millionaires. Will they all act in the interests of the majority?
It's dangerous. It's not democratic. Money and politics have never mixed well in the past, and will never mix well in the future. - MrWhite7, on 04/13/2008, -10/+59I thought he was referred to as an elitist for his statements, not his money?
- Zippo, on 04/13/2008, -21/+70Counting for inflation, 700,000 was about the same, if not more than 1,300,000 today
- LiLBiGD1Ck, on 04/13/2008, -11/+45Yeah the description clearly says "Vote for obama because hes not as rich"...
..
If you havnt figured it out yet, this article is a response to claims by Hillary and McCain that Obama is an Elitist. - PHiZ187, on 04/13/2008, -3/+37I'm not mad at Bill and Hillary for making 106 million. I'm not going to hate on them for being successful. Their conduct during the campaign however, I do not like. There is only one word to describe Hillary at this point: craven.
- pintomp3, on 04/13/2008, -2/+33his statements were about the fact that people were bitter and skeptical about change on real issues like the economy, so they vote on issues like gay marriage instead.
- quarkie, on 04/13/2008, -10/+41*****.
Here are the official US inflation numbers from 1992 - 2007.
1992 3.03
1993 2.96
1994 2.61
1995 2.81
1996 2.93
1997 2.34
1998 1.55
1999 2.19
2000 3.38
2001 2.83
2002 1.59
2003 2.27
2004 2.68
2005 3.39
2006 3.24
2007 2.85
Compounding those together gives 52% over those years: or roughly 700K in 1992 = 1.05 M in 2007
If you assume those are off by like 1% (I added 1% on each number), you get:
4.03, 3.96, 3.61, 3.81, 3.93, 3.34, 2.55, 3.19, 4.38, 3.83, 2.59, 3.27, 3.68, 4.39, 4.24, 3.85
Compounding those together makes: 1.71%
So even if I give you an extra 1% per year (average increase of 40% per year), 700k is only 1.25M. Considering I had to fudge the numbers by 40% to get close you are wrong. - pylaeron, on 04/13/2008, -7/+37Because he spent most of it on chubby hookers.
- Tyorant, on 04/13/2008, -30/+56Ok, ok, we get it, their claims that he is an eltist is ironic because of his income and background in comparison to their own.
Enough with 10 front page stories a day telling us this. - Sananda, on 04/13/2008, -3/+26You just missed the point.
- Nyck, on 04/13/2008, -4/+25I guess it's safe to say a majority of Diggers support Obama...I back the guy as well but the sheer amount of E-peen being thrown around on this site for obama is hilarious. I know that if I see an Obama post it is to announce he again is Black Jesus, however if its McCain or Clinton its ALWAYS something negative. I would expect to see both sides of the card here. Hell any of them are better than Dubya.
- tdog138, on 04/13/2008, -7/+27The term elitism does not refer to how much money a person has, but rather their feeling superior due to their social status. Why do people have the need to continually shove Obama's net worth around?
- quarkie, on 04/13/2008, -6/+26"Considering I had to fudge the numbers by 40% to get close you are wrong."
- inactive, on 04/13/2008, -5/+23Wow, Obama is the poorest candidate on the list. I don't think that money directly reflects on how elitist people are but if money is an indicator Obama sure is the least elitist.
- Rahodeb, on 04/13/2008, -6/+22This is assinine. Money has nothing to do with being an elitist. Your attitude towards the less fortunate is what defines you as an elitist. Would anyone consider Bill Gates elitist? No, because he's not, even though he's the (2nd?) richest man on the earth.
- ventralnet, on 04/13/2008, -1/+17ps: i live in a wealthy neighborhood
- krebcycle, on 04/13/2008, -4/+19wow, a snob about the definition of "elitist"...
perhaps he's saying that nobody with 40 million should be waving the "elitist" wand. just perhaps. Sparky. - CthulhuDawn, on 04/13/2008, -1/+16RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL
lol - stizz, on 04/13/2008, -4/+19I'm bitter. The poor USA is like a child that is too delicate to hear the truth.
- noahtron, on 04/13/2008, -6/+20"Barack Obama is worth $1.3M, McCain: $40.4M, Hillary: $$$$$$"
c'mon, what kind of title is that? if you're gonna list the net worth of the top 3 contenders, don't put "$$$$$$" for Hillary just because you don't think she should win. - hmunkey, on 04/13/2008, -4/+17As far as a presidential candidate goes that's low. Considering he has a Harvard education and is a successful author that makes sense too. Obama is probably one of the hardest working Americans anyways, and people of his caliber should be expected to make a decent amount of money.
- sgiffy, on 04/13/2008, -2/+15Unless one can hold down a job while running for office, you are goign to need some amount of savings. Obama's wealth, jobs, and income, are not all that remarkable and pretty much exemplify the idea of someone being successful and moving up. In fact given that we tend ot want presidents who are smart and good at *****, it would be odd for them to not have garnered at least marginal wealth before they are 40.
Even in nonprofits and education, the people near the top make close to or over 100k a year and I tend with an ability to save and be frugal being worth over a million is pretty easy. - flair1, on 04/13/2008, -2/+15Obama will be worth millions after the election, win or lose. He will be able to make 500k for a speach like Bill.
- haylel, on 04/13/2008, -0/+12yes.
- brad3378, on 04/13/2008, -2/+14He quit smoking too.
I think he's ready to be our president now. - haylel, on 04/13/2008, -1/+13You're kidding, right?
I'm sure they have completely seperate bank accounts and never touch each other's money...
Like all married couples...... - aargh01, on 04/13/2008, -0/+12So they're all rich?
- antivirus88, on 04/13/2008, -0/+12Evidence this with a well known and accepted PPP Chart please.
- ramong, on 04/13/2008, -4/+16george carlin said it best:" people keep voting for these rich *****, who don`t give a ***** about you, they don`t give a *****...."
- inactive, on 04/13/2008, -3/+15"Who's the Elitist??"
All of them. - inactive, on 04/13/2008, -3/+14What does this article serve? let's vote for the poorer guy because he relates to us?...please
- evodevo1, on 04/13/2008, -0/+11First of all, Obama is the youngest by FAR out of all of them. He is 24 years younger than McCain and 8 years younger than the nearest contender, John Edwards. Give him some time and he will get his millions.
The lesson from these numbers is that we should stop the partisan politics that is being perpetrated from the top down. The politicians need the partisan rhetoric for them to actually exist. They are all the same, bunch of fat cats practicing the same old politics. In the end, it's the policies that matter and that is what we should focus on and hold them accountable to what they promise in their campaigns. - inactive, on 04/13/2008, -10/+21Why dont you look up the definition of Elitist Sparky?
A graduate student working on their thesis with 100k debt can be an elitist. - ontain, on 04/13/2008, -1/+12the working class should all be bitter at what the government and the big corps have done.
- ZPWeeks, on 04/13/2008, -0/+11Yes, and I'll bet that the way your neighbors vote is fairly predictable.
- sgiffy, on 04/13/2008, -1/+12Being worth 1.3 million when you're in your 40's is not all that hard if you make anywhere near 100k a year and live pretty frugally.
- biotch, on 04/13/2008, -0/+10Yeah..... I want to know just how claiming voters are bitter is somehow misconstrued as an elitist comment. Just because you think someone is bitter doesnt mean you think you are better than them. I observe bitterness all the time. Why does observing bitterness translate into elitism? Its not a logical conclusion.
- had3l, on 04/13/2008, -24/+331.25M is about the same as 1.3 M in my book.
- hmunkey, on 04/13/2008, -2/+10Obama? I think you mean Hillary.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 04/13/2008, -3/+11I guess it depends on where you live.
100k a year is not very much in most large cities. - jumpyg1258, on 04/13/2008, -0/+8Last time I checked, Ron is worth around the million to million and a half mark. I dont recall seeing Obama this low according to his financial disclosure statements. In fact, according to this CNN article last year, his yearly income is around $950,000. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/17/candidates. ...
