- marabout40, on 08/05/2008, -84/+288Before you watch the videos (3-parts), please keep in mind how this administration has lied to us about who was responsible for 9/11. How they concocted evidence and developed a very effective propoganda machine to help sell the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq to us. Keep in mind the recent reports about Bush coercing the FBI to blame Iraq for the anthrax killings. Then I want you to watch the videos and ask yourself, after all the lies and manipulation by this administration, why should we believe them now when they sing their new Republican anthem: THE SURGE IS WORKING!
- jowc, on 08/05/2008, -35/+134Wow. Powerful. But of course, don't expect the traditional media to cover this story.
- gllopc, on 08/06/2008, -20/+104This is the observation and results of one person. It's not a true comparison of data found prior and post the surge or occupation.
By no means am I even for the occupation, but I think diggers should at least remember that just because something hits the front page doesn't mean that it's news, and is oftentimes opinion. - ColonelTribune, on 08/05/2008, -34/+92Interesting to have this take from an embedded reporter.
- neognostic, on 08/05/2008, -75/+127Republican themes.
Bush "Terrorists! Terrorists! Terrorists!"
Rudy "911 911! 911!"
McCain "Surge! Surge! Surge!"
Republican Congress "Drill! Drill! Drill!"
Republican Senate "Gay Marriage! Gay Marriage! Gay Marriage!"
Obama Platform http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -14/+55If you were to bring "democracy" to Iraq you would give the people the freedom to choose whether the US stays or goes.
If 78% of Iraqi's want the US out right now, we should respect their sovereignty and leave. - Bovorik, on 08/06/2008, -11/+51Precisely.
Since when have sites like dailykos and huffingtonpost been anything but blogs (as opposed to venerated/respected publications/broadcasters)? When did they suddenly evolve into paragons of impartial reporting. - JekJob, on 08/05/2008, -35/+73Everyone must watch this. It is incredible, and absolutely revolting that America has allowed this to happen.
- dejay181, on 08/06/2008, -13/+49surge was an awesome drink...i wish they would bring it back
- DeskFlyer, on 08/06/2008, -28/+62This already hit the front page with nearly 3800 diggs, but I'll gladly digg it again simply for the superb reporting about something we are all being deceived about here in the US (and also because that guy has balls of titanium). More people need to see this.
Read the comments from the original: http://digg.com/world_news/Baghdad_5_years_Later_S ... - Delphium226, on 08/06/2008, -10/+41I see, so if you're for Bush and his lies, you're for America. If you're for the constitution and the truth, you're against America? Perhaps you think the US is a monarchy?
- s3d1t0r, on 08/06/2008, -33/+59And the winner... George W. Bush takes the prize for the most Epic Failure of all time.
- phoenixshard, on 08/06/2008, -6/+31When it suits somebody's position and they want to point out an Internet source that agrees with them.
- reyalp, on 08/06/2008, -4/+27>>I find it very disconcerting that we are now building walls between Mexico and the United States of America. Who do these walls benefit? Who are they keeping out, and who are they keeping in?
WTF does this even have to do with Iraq? - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -6/+27both parties are full of it
- poidh, on 08/06/2008, -23/+44I think the surge facts debunk the debunking of the surge myth.
- bestsoccerdog, on 08/06/2008, -28/+47So you don't think 100 soldiers dying is any different from 15 dying? The surge is working, and the numbers prove it.
- Waiting2awake, on 08/06/2008, -4/+22You mean they would have edited out for home consumption. When China does that we call it censorship.
- marabout40, on 08/05/2008, -37/+55Here's some additional information to help you understand what's going on in Iraq, put the surge in context, and make a decision about who has the judgment we need to right the wrongs that this administration and the Neo-cons have done to our country. http://therealnews.com/t/index.php?option=com_cont ...
- ekdevdas, on 08/06/2008, -16/+34I think I saw the youtube videos on digg a few days ago, but I'm still digging the article because it's so good. Republicans are the epitome of distortion, the masters of lies. They kill the innocent to line their own pockets. And thus, by the standards of decency and ethics that we've come to as human beings, we must conclude that they -- in their destructive mode of thought -- have no reason to be on this world, let alone in charge of our government. Let's vote those monsters out this election. Yes we can!
- pintomp3, on 08/06/2008, -5/+23that wasn't the point of the surge. the purpose of the surge was to provide breathing for political reconciliation. that hasn't happened. btw, i prefer 0 soldiers dying to 15. let's get them out of there.
- thegrantman, on 08/06/2008, -14/+31At 00:58 he contradicts himself. (The walls) "They are the main reason the violence has fallen." Fallen,or worse than ever?
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/06/2008, -18/+34Wow. That third part with the interview of the 7 year old is shocking. The kid saw his parents both killed and is afraid American troops want to kill him so he runs and hides whenever he sees them. Mission accomplished, I guess...
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -1/+17Depends. Do you have shares in Oil Stocks, Oil futures? Halyburton, Carlyle group?
- fx666, on 08/06/2008, -26/+42I did not support the surge of the US troops in Iraq because I thought it would not work. But I was wrong, it did work. Now all independent journalists, including the ones working for The New York Times, which is my favorite newspaper, report that the violence is significantly down in Iraq. However, a single reporter with an agenda sees things differently. Even the person whom I despise most, which is Obama (I am a Clinton supporter) acknowledged that the number of terrorist attacks in Iraq has fallen. Of course, there are idiots who believe in all kind of unreal things because of their limited mental capacity, for them this "journalist" is a hero.
- chaaalieboy, on 08/06/2008, -2/+17Embedded means you're with a military unit.
This guy was definitely NOT with a military unit. If he was, the story wouldn't have been nearly as critical. - charm803, on 08/06/2008, -12/+27You know what's so funny (not in a ha ha way) is that we created most of the violence there to begin with, so this surge should have never had happened.
It's almost like when they said "only" a few troops died last month, but they forgot to mention all the thousands that died unnecessarily the years before. - elcapitanp, on 08/06/2008, -2/+15The point is that it is not the surge that is working, it is the fact that people are now living in ghettos.
- Jaablaze, on 08/06/2008, -6/+18they are evil masterminds that masquerade as idiots. Makes people think they aren't capable of what they are really doing.
- david76, on 08/06/2008, -3/+15From a peak of roughly 3800 deaths per month in 2006, to the current 500 deaths per month, something has obviously changed. The question is whether considering all of the other factors, one is able to say conclusively "The Surge" is the root cause of the change.
There is a notable precipitous drop in Iraqi civilian deaths in 2007. But again, was the Surge the only thing that changed? Probably not.
http://www.economist.com/world/mideast-africa/disp ... (Has a graph of deaths per month) - homah, on 08/06/2008, -3/+15I wish I could give you more than one digg.
- pintomp3, on 08/06/2008, -3/+15i don't think he took a truther angle. i think he was referring to the fact that the administration tried to tie saddam and iraq to 9/11
- odigity, on 08/06/2008, -8/+20You were right up until you said "Republican anthem". You need to stop being blind to the fact that both parties are the same. Don't fall into the partisan trap of "the Republicans suck, so vote Democrat!". Democrats have had a majority for two years now, and haven't changed anything. They're both the same, they just pretend to be different to create the illusion of choice.
- Logicexe, on 08/06/2008, -5/+16As if inflating your tires was the only part of his plan? Is that what you're suggesting? Do you know how dishonest that is? Do you even care?
Besides, even if it was the only part of his plan, it would still accomplish more than offshore drilling. Most estimates say that production would only get underway in any significant manner by 2030, and even then it would only effect prices by a few percent seeing as how it would be a drop in the bucket compared to world wide oil production. Some estimates say it would only changes prices by 1 or 2% which is less than what you'd save if your tires were properly inflated. - LouBrown, on 08/06/2008, -7/+18Do you see open-air cemeteries and neighborhoods separated by 12-feet high walls in any big city?
- BotchaMcCoola, on 08/06/2008, -4/+15The "surge is working" is just military and War Industry propaganda. That
was debunked a long time back already. Even Senator Jim Webb admitted
what I am saying recently. As far as violence being down it is because
you are being forced by the politicians to piss away money paying
Sunnis not to fight. Along with that and their promise of running the
country soon, the Shia can take a break as a result. What is left is
an occasional Sunni fanatic blowing up a car or truck in a
Shia neighborhood, or a few Shia fanatics blowing up US soldiers. As far as
the long term effects on Iraq, it is unknown but my guess - it will
likely be like Vietnam. They have to get rid of nosy outsiders so they
can get back to their own business. Wouldn't we have done exactly the same
thing if the British had interfered with our Civil War? - dexter411, on 08/06/2008, -3/+14I was born in the Soviet Union. For you to even try to compare the two shows an incredible amount of ignorance.
- kd1s, on 08/06/2008, -4/+15Exactly. Anyone with an attention pan greater than that of a flea knows that Iraq represented no threat to the United States. Sure, it was a threat to Israel but the Israelis have enough defensive capability that they themselves could lay complete and utter destruction on Iraq should they need to.
The administration of George W. Bush is one of the most secretive in modern history. We're still waiting for those emails, and I'm still waiting to see Rove on the stand. Why does the administration fight so hard? Because they know if Miers, Rove et al get on the stand and testify they're going to sing like canaries and the whole gig will be up.
Look what they tried to do to Scott McClellan. He pretty much tipped his hand as to what the administration did. I'm also surprised that Colin Powell hasn't really said much, but his actions speak louder than words ever could.
We went into Iraq for one reason and one reason only. There's oil there. Notice you're not seeing much about that oil in the news? It's because the wells are back online and the funds from the sale of oil aren't going into Iraq reconstruction. They're going to the big oil companies.
Is anyone surprised about that? Both Bush and Cheney are oil men. - roddack, on 08/06/2008, -26/+36Gee Obama's Platform looks to be a lot of let me take stuff from Person X and give it to Peron Y because they somehow deserve it more despite the fact they didn't earn it.
Oh and lets enlarge the government more yay! that sounds like a great plan.......
And great job Dems on controlling congress and doing so much to stop the war.......
Please both parties are full of it - david76, on 08/06/2008, -23/+33Lied to us about 9/11? Come on. The Bush Administration cannot simultaneously be full of evil masterminds and complete idiots.
Every other lie has been exposed by a) MSM, b) The Daily Show, c) Keith Olberman. Don't you think the "Truth" would be more widely accepted if it were true? - source1984, on 08/06/2008, -0/+10he did NOT contradict himself. his point just went right over your head. He's saying that the walls may have caused a decrease in violence, but its a tense, fragile peace held together by walls. I think we all know that never works!
- pintomp3, on 08/06/2008, -5/+15if the surge has worked so well, why can't we leave?
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -4/+14WTF? Which other huge ass army bombed their cities into rubble and killed a million ***** people?
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -2/+12The Iraqis bombed Fallujah into rubble?
Wow.
Just... wow. - AWBoy666, on 08/06/2008, -10/+20How about the fact that the death rate of both US troops and Iraqi civilians is at its lowest since the start of the war? What about that FACT?
- diggit83, on 08/06/2008, -0/+10They did, its called Vault...
- Daedalus81, on 08/06/2008, -3/+12Then remove the troops leave and LET them deal with it.
- boerema, on 08/06/2008, -0/+9I agree. I have had numerous friends come back from Iraq and say that where they were positioned, the Iraqi people were extremely thankful for the work the US had done in bringing democracy to their country. Iraq was a little like North Korea under Saddam in that while Baghdad was rich and offered luxuries that some middle-class Americans don't even have, the rest of the country was left to ruin. Now, local governments are up and running, schools are open, water is again flowing to many cities that didn't have it previously, the list goes on. But you aren't going to find it in the news. Go ask someone that was in Iraq for the REAL story.
