The launching point of Bachmann's remarks was the widely popular and bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which would expand national community service programs from 75,000 positions to 250,000.
"It's under the guise of -- quote -- volunteerism. But it's not volunteers at all. It's paying people to do work on behalf of government," said the Minnesota Republican. "I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums."
/FTA - freedomjoe, on 04/06/2009, -21/+94Oh, Michelle....I can see the drive-thru lobotomy was an utter failure. Better luck next time?
- freedomjoe, on 04/06/2009, -11/+77I just realized where I've heard "concerning" used as an adjective before...right here on digg, by Supercandy! So you suppose that Supercandy and Michelle are
1) related
2) the same person (this explains the "partisan swindle"! that Supercandy is obsessed with)
3) in some kind of quid pro quo relationship of atrocities against grammar?
Irony alert:
Michelle Bachmann is listed as an endorser of the extremely fundy teen "camp" Minnesota Teen Challenge.
In fact, she supports earmarks for it:

PS Write Pelosi and ask her to censure Crazy Bachmann -- she is out of control and shouldn't be working as an elected official. - JamesK, on 04/06/2009, -14/+73I'm sure there are a lot of Minnesotans who are really embarrassed by her and the district she represents. How many ***** crazy claims does this woman have to make before cooler heads prevail?
- utopianlady, on 04/06/2009, -18/+70Where does she come up with this stuff? She should be writing fiction.
- Batfishy, on 04/06/2009, -17/+69That woman is too exhausting.
- JenniferInMO, on 04/07/2009, -18/+62Bachmann seems to favor just giving away college grant money to students. The Serve America Act is an excellent program. If you want free money for college, then volunteer your time. The student picks the type of volunteer work (it is not imposed). As a society we get the benefit of hundreds of thousands of volunteers helping the poor, the disabled and the elderly and those kids get the character-building benefit of helping others and $4,000/year for college.
No one has EVER proposed the program should be mandatory, but Bachmann and others have taken the word "mandatory" that was originally in the bill (which referred to a mandatory minimum hours of volunteer work for those people who want the college money) and have run with it screaming. The GOP has worked for years to promote narcissism and the every-man-for-himself mentality of its supporters. Young Americans learning the value of being a member of a community is threatening to the GOP's core. - Echota, on 04/06/2009, -15/+58Man! Bachmann is such a malfunction! Batsh*t crazy!
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -2/+43Another rambling, incoherent response brought to you by Alanocu.
- scottknick, on 04/06/2009, -18/+57When Michele Bachmann apologizes to the families of those dead cops in Pittsburgh, then I'll listen to her. Until then she can talk to the hand.
- Batfishy, on 04/06/2009, -6/+37She has a lot more to apologize for than that.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -4/+32She is; she just doesn't know it.
- FarOutGrace, on 04/06/2009, -2/+30Michele, that you? Helloooo...
- novenator, on 04/07/2009, -0/+27Minnesota actually has a long history of progressive, Scandinavian style politics. The Democratic Party there is actually a synthesis of the Democrats, Farmer Party, and Labor Party. There are other 3rd party traditions too, the Independence Party (once part of the Reform Party, who Gov. Jesse Ventura belonged to), Greens, (real) Socialist-Workers party, Constitution Party, etc.
The problem is with the 6th District, comprised of the right wing northern, outer-ring suburbs and exurbs. They voted for Bush by huge margins and chose Bachmann over Patti Wetterling, the mother of abucted Jacob Wetterling (big news in the 80s) and advocate of education and children's issues nationwide.
The 6th should be ashamed of themselves, they are the laughing stock of the nation. - JenniferInMO, on 04/07/2009, -5/+30WTF?
- JlmAWP, on 04/07/2009, -5/+30We elected Bush. Twice. (Almost) half of America should be embarassed.
- joeditto, on 04/06/2009, -12/+36Bachmann should be admitted to a Mental Institution .. she should be placed into solitary confinement... ASAP
- eir574, on 04/07/2009, -3/+27"Being a member of the community is great, but being completely dependent on your community isn't"
So don't choose to participate in the program. Or, are you saying that you don't like that the program encourages volunteer work? - freedomjoe, on 04/06/2009, -2/+26It's not my fault you can't read sentences more complex than: See Jane Lie.
- JenniferInMO, on 04/07/2009, -3/+25How does promoting higher learning and community service cause one to become dependent on anything?
- Misinformant, on 04/07/2009, -8/+30And who says there's no funny female comedians?
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+20Hell, I'm surprised he can read anything based on his comments.
- Suricou, on 04/07/2009, -15/+32I understand her objection.
It's well-known that education tends to correlate with political affiliation, with the highly educated tending towards democrat and the poorly educated towards republican. Even conservatives acknowledge the statistics, though they attribute it to secret college brainwashing programs. For the republican party, anything that improves educational standards is a serious threat. The less educated they keep the population, the more votes they get. - novenator, on 04/07/2009, -2/+19alancou, you should know
http://digg.com/politics/Change_in_federal_marijua ... - shig, on 04/07/2009, -2/+18HR1444 Section 4 Subsection B(6)
"Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds."
So... are you going to lock up Rep. James McDermott along with her for attempting to set up a congressional commission to determine whether MANDATORY service "could be implemented"? Notice how it's already "workable, fair, and reasonable". No commission required to determine such trivialities...
Text of the bill HR1444: Congressional Commission on Civic Service Act

Only in Minnesota (or Kansas, or Nebraska, or Oklahoma, or Texas). I wish we could carve out the center of the States and let them float out to sea and self-govern under the theocracy of their choice. I'm so sick of these right-wing, gun slingin, gay bashing, hate mongers
- Gabberwok, on 04/07/2009, -10/+26Are you really trying to defend Michele Bachmann's statements? If so, good luck - you'll need it.
- anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -7/+22The reason that no one here is spelling out why we disagree with her is that her statement is so insane we figured it wouldn't need explanation. Since it isn't as clear to you, here is why people disagree:
1. The act that Michele is referring to is the BIPARTISAN Serve America Act. It seeks to increase the number of volunteers from 75,000 to 250,000.
2. Did you see the word "volunteers" in the previous sentence? This means that people are not forced to do anything - in this case, help the less fortunate. Because that'd be really terrible! She says that she believes it will become mandatory, basing this on absolutely nothing - even if it *were* true, it's ***** volunteering. It's not the draft to fight and die in the military, which Bachmann would probably support.
3. Bachmann says that young people will "go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward", making it sound like some shadowy government conspiracy. Yes, Michele, organizations like AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps, and Learn and Serve America are terribly shady - part of the NWO, even! Damn those foster grandparents, the Red Cross, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Summary: Michele Bachmann continues to be insane. - doug209, on 04/07/2009, -10/+25Do you guys think that maybe what she's concerned about are comments like these?
Rahm Emanuel (Obama's chief of staff):

He discusses mandatory service for "everyone 18-25" - SirWalrus, on 04/07/2009, -5/+19I think most American youth are in need of some serious science and math reeducation camp due to the awful state of our k-12 system.

- graphictruth, on 04/07/2009, -1/+13So it's not the idea of re-education. It's the *ideas*
- evildeadguy, on 04/07/2009, -0/+12Talk to the hand?
That is damned sassy. - MeatMountain, on 04/07/2009, -15/+26I would settle for just vanilla EDUcation camps for these dumbass rednecks teaching their kids creationism and the divinity of being a white citizen of the USA.
- weeFred, on 04/07/2009, -2/+13The same people then voted for Obama?? This is a new one. It has been long established that the religious right got Bush into the White House, the religious right despise Obama because .... well he's not a nutjob.
- weeFred, on 04/07/2009, -0/+10I think he was referring to you asking to write to Pelosi to censure Bachmann..... It would be easier to put duct tape over her mouth....
- mrbuddy, on 04/07/2009, -5/+15mrbuddy::Rep. Bachman--is as though she has come apart at the seams--what is she taking--maybe she should test the Faith-Base course. Historically didn't she ever hear of the Peace Corps::President Obama's plan is to get the young involved in something good--directed to others and off their own sillyness. He isn't just giving people free hand outs--the money has to be earned. No it is not a program for loosers---as the skin head who ambushed the 3 policemen in Pittsburgh( kicked out of high school, kicked out of the Marine corp, lost his job) But OK he had an assault rifle. I'm sure he loved McCain and Palin and the crazy right wing thinking in this country.
- weeFred, on 04/07/2009, -1/+11The religious right have more than their fair share of power because they are very well organised. They get a few people elected in their state who then make it harder for people who are statistically more likely to vote democrat to have their voice heard. They leverage their power in Washington very skilfully, they use the money they have to spread FUD about opposition candidates and groups while at the same time deflecting the deserved criticism that they get. They have managed to shift the political zeitgeist of the US further and further to the right without major opposition for the past 8 years so that when a moderate on the right runs for president he is labelled Stalin. I do have some idea about how politics work - yes there is the swing vote, but when the powerful use their power to misinform, scare and intimidate the population, the swing vote counts for less and less.
- novenator, on 04/07/2009, -16/+26The first wingnut who says 'buried for huffpo' voted for Bachmann.
- TVarmy, on 04/07/2009, -4/+14See, a good fictional story has to be believable to some degree... Even fantasy has some degree of logic.
- novenator, on 04/07/2009, -1/+10Don't worry, I guess 'god' told her to run for office.
- hpi5555, on 04/07/2009, -2/+11Talk to the hand? Is that the best you can come up with?

Buried and Reported. - Suricou, on 04/07/2009, -0/+9Why would any political party seek to win over illegal immigrants? They can't vote. At best they might aid in some campaigning, but I imagine most are trying to keep a low profile.
Point taken though - if they were politically active, they would be active for the democrats, out of pure self-interest.
Wiskeythief left a bit out though: Academics tend strongly towards democrat. - Homerr, on 04/07/2009, -2/+10If the Serve America Act is "re-education" then what are the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines?

- anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -3/+11Evidently you don't know how many illegal immigrants are Catholic, very pro-life, and conservative. I'd also point you to the Young Republican clubs on campuses, the fact that people from just about every political party are unemployed right now, and a hell of a lot of blue-collar workers leaning to the right, especially in the South.
