- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -2/+418A convicted felon fails to get re-elected, this should have been a no-brainer; but apparently not in Alaska.
- RavagesOfTime, on 11/19/2008, -3/+360Down the tubes he goes.
- chrispix, on 11/19/2008, -13/+282Glad to see he lost. Now Palin can't appoint her self Senator.
- diggzoid, on 11/19/2008, -3/+182Alaska + Politics = Fail
Alaska + Crustaceans = Win - jonathantneal, on 11/19/2008, -20/+196FAIL!
- sheeplescareme, on 11/19/2008, -2/+162he claims he won't ask for a pardon, though i am sure that he will get one.
- tumples, on 11/19/2008, -2/+100I am glad for Alaska, but can't believe it took this long for such a recently convicted felon to lose an election.
- airwalkery2k, on 11/19/2008, -2/+79This is a big win for us in the pro-"internet is a big truck" lobby.
- DrLeePhD, on 11/19/2008, -0/+70zoidberg for president!
- swordoffire7, on 11/19/2008, -7/+74now all we need is for Al Franken to win
- Hobbes24, on 11/19/2008, -2/+68obligatory series of tubes reference!
- v0ider, on 11/19/2008, -10/+74Now the Democrats just need to defeat Saxby Chambliss in the run-off election in Georgia to have 60 seats in the Senate.
- znewick, on 11/19/2008, -2/+51this joy is only slightly less than when obama won. God damn I hate ted stevens
- Anomaly100, on 11/19/2008, -2/+48Awww! That must have broke his tiny, black, dried up little heart! Poor thing.
So, how is Palin going to fit into this? And you know she will somehow. - Tripacer9999, on 11/19/2008, -1/+47You're forgetting about the Minnesota race.
- Apokalyps2547, on 11/19/2008, -1/+44Name recognition is a powerful tool for long-time senators seeking re-election.
2 years ago Connecticut's Democrats found out the hard way. - ThinkBox, on 11/19/2008, -1/+43Tubes have rejected your request for the senate. They are full.
- elister, on 11/19/2008, -1/+39I hope he doesn't puss out and die of a heart attack like Ken Lay did.
- GrandmaSheila, on 11/19/2008, -4/+41Stevens: "NOOOO!!"
- sulthernao, on 11/19/2008, -2/+37Hey patpl22391,
Turns out that whole story about finding 32 absentee ballots in a car was entirely made up by Coleman's lawyers. And while we're at it, I'd like to inform you not to be surprised if Franken wins the recount even though he is down by 207 votes. Statistical analysis tells us that Democrats unintentionally undervote more than Republicans. - ebolaworld, on 11/19/2008, -2/+35Hooray! This means no Senator Palin!
- greenroom628, on 11/19/2008, -1/+33well, well, look at the news that comes through the inter-tubes...
nice job, alaska. though i'm not so sure about the others that voted for him in the first place. i mean really...a convicted criminal? are you really that hard up for people that can be senators in alaska? if that's the case, we'll send you joe the plumber-country-singer wannabe or whatever he is nowadays. - pwner, on 11/19/2008, -4/+35Now send him to federal pound-me-in-the ass prison!
- martalli, on 11/19/2008, -3/+32Bush is probably most interested in pardoning himself and Cheney.
- Shruthi99, on 11/19/2008, -0/+28It's not something that you just DUMP something on!
- jmpeagle, on 11/19/2008, -1/+28he's brings in billions of dollars of pork into a state with only 3 electoral votes, he's practically a living deity to many of them.
- Batfishy, on 11/19/2008, -4/+29I am not sure of the rules, exactly, pat, but I do know that under some circumstances governors appoint their state senators. No need to be mean.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+24They're not booing, they're shouting TUUUUUUUUUUUUBES!
- Rowan187, on 11/19/2008, -1/+23I voted against him
- Ladymongoose, on 11/19/2008, -1/+22Good, can he go to jail now please?
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/19/2008, -1/+20Its pathetic that a politician as corrupt as this idiot even had a chance at getting re-elected.
- ishmandoo, on 11/19/2008, -1/+20Good Riddance!
- mlOverdrive, on 11/19/2008, -2/+21Geez loueez, why this election was even close amazes me.
What's the state motto of Alaska: "Wholly unqualified or tremendously corrupt - you betcha!" - Shaggy3, on 11/19/2008, -0/+18Palin: "NOOOO!!"
- Danby123, on 11/19/2008, -0/+18Again?
Because Clinton's surplus was so terrible? - darkciti2, on 11/19/2008, -0/+17Well, she certainly can't become a Senator any time soon.
If Stevens would have won (with 7 felony convictions), the Senate Reps could have ousted him by a vote. Having a convicted Republican felon makes the already damaged Republican brand look pretty bad, so it would be quite likely that he would have been kicked out. As he got booted from the Senate, the Governor of the State can then "appoint" someone to replace him until the next election (or they have a special runoff election). The Governor can also appoint themselves for the position.
The Governor in question here is the nitwit otherwise known as Sarah Palin. She would have shamelessly appointed herself to fill his Senate seat.
Either way, it's a lose-lose situation for the already crumbling and corrupt Repub. party. The true conservatives are already moving the Libertarian brand and promoting it. - honukai, on 11/19/2008, -1/+17I think it's because Alaska has a large rural population. Rural in Alaska can mean something very different than rural in the mainland (like you're mail arrives by a plane on a schedule).
- Vandelay797, on 11/19/2008, -2/+18the internet is a big truck!
- deadbaby, on 11/19/2008, -1/+17I really feel bad for the people of Alaska. It's been a rough year. Hopefully everyone remembers not everyone from Alaska is a babbling idiot and/or criminal.
- martalli, on 11/19/2008, -0/+15Now Stevens can run to replace Palpatine's open position.
- RandomGorilla, on 11/19/2008, -5/+20He won't ask for a pardon because he doesn't ***** NEED it. He's got a Republican presidential "Get Out Of Jail Free" card and would have one even if he was convicted of raping a baby seal to death. Big money Neo-cons may ***** on everyone else but they look after their own.
- darkciti2, on 11/19/2008, -8/+23Yeah. Bill Clinton and the Democratic Congress reformed the welfare system and whom left office with a 3 trillion dollar budget surplus (which Bush Jr. promptly squandered to his Oil buddies).
I'm absolutely looking forward to 4 years of Democratic leadership and a President with some tech. savvy (Obama is the first President to have a laptop[computer] in the Oval Office).
I for one, welcome an intelligent President. - sulthernao, on 11/19/2008, -2/+17No she couldn't. Alaska state law was rewritten after the previous AK Governor did exactly that. However, she most likely would have run and (unfortunately) won a special election to replace Stevens.
- mycoplasma, on 11/19/2008, -0/+14He'll need a real big truck to fix this mess!
- NaziHatinChimp, on 11/19/2008, -1/+15Did I really say one?
- IndigoMoss, on 11/19/2008, -0/+14As a hungry conservative, with a sandwich-heavy portfolio, Zoidberg would be a god send!
- soupdawg30, on 11/19/2008, -3/+17It actually doesn't say much about teh guy running against him. He barely won and Ted Stevens is a crook.
- DannyDriffs, on 11/19/2008, -2/+16mmmmm, karma.
- Akairenn, on 11/19/2008, -1/+14So... His senatorial career just went down the series of tubes?
- supferrets, on 11/19/2008, -1/+14@DavidGX
I completely agree. Not to mention, EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN in the Senate voted against the Clinton Deficit Reduction Act of 1993; every last one. It still narrowly passed, and the next eight years were marked by the most expansive economic growth in the history of our country.
And what did the legislation do? It raised taxes on the top 1%, and cut taxes for the rest... sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? -
