- acroyear2, on 06/24/2008, -6/+49I'm going to throw the most absurd theory as to why I believe Obama will win:
Admittedly it has nothing to do with policy as we are nation of "low-information" voters*. It's part psychological and sociological. The reason is that even those who are against Obama's presidency hold a contradictory curiosity about his presidency. They want to know what it will look like; what it will be. Even white supremacists had offer their "race war" argument because even an ounce of them wants to witness this. I recall visiting a popular white power website to see what the tenor of conversation was, several months ago. Someone posited the "good" aspects of an Obama presidency and others' agreed with him.
So with that increasingly in the minds of people, you have the human nature factor: people often don't vote for a perceived "loser". More and more people believe it's going to happen and so around election time, I believe there will be a large amount of people against Obama who just won't vote at all. From their perspective, they'll let the chips fall where they may.
If you're for Obama, it's hope. If you're against Obama, it's macabre curiosity. Either way it's going to happen. Let's celebrate the beginning or end of a new day.
*I mean this in a grand, cynical, sense. It's the reason republicans are so successful. They manipulate more effectively, the ill-informed. - Kangalanatolian, on 06/24/2008, -8/+48Obama WILL win. You don't need to vote for a pretend conservative to stop him, because the war/occupation made it hopeless. And remember the last time we voted for the pretend conservative? We are destroying our own currency to try to save the economy, while we protect a country across the globe as our borders are overrun. Anything conservative here yet?
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -2/+30Holy ***** dude, you've only been on digg for 3 days and you've made 288 posts?? It looks like a good portion of them are anti-Obama as well...
So, what are you planning on trading in your "McCain-points" for? - spookyttws, on 06/25/2008, -0/+27Wait, Obama is black?
- 11Christine, on 06/24/2008, -3/+30Haha :) Looks like Steele screwed up, big time.
- tcbishop12, on 06/25/2008, -1/+22Dugg for original thinking. Thought is helpful.
- acroyear2, on 06/24/2008, -3/+17Expect his book in the bargain bin in early 2009. He'll then go into hiding to write his next novel, "Why oil is infinitely sustainable and how you can refine it at home"
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+13238, my bad. But still, damn.
- arunforce, on 06/25/2008, -1/+14I got into an argument with a person who said that "Obama is going to lose, Hillary WILL win. The elections are rigged." Now that Obama won, I told him to shut the ***** up, and learn something before you go blabbering, but he just blabbers about the next subject. People like these never change. You just have to learn to ignore them. All they seek is attention or money (in this guy's case).
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -3/+15I can do the same thing!
Obama will win because:
a) He's multiracial.
b) Interesting family background
c) Prominent wife
d) Charismatic
e) McCain seems to be the same as bush / seems like your typical old politician.
f) Ehh, his pastor did set him down a few points
g) No one gives a ***** about that "issue"
h) This has NOTHING to do with Obama.
Honestly, most of those things you listed are opinions. You can twist them anyway you want to. In my opinion, McCain is just another cold and old politician. Most people agree that Obama is a much better orator than McCain, and therefor connects with the voters easier. - keviniskool, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Wait, we're having an election?
- charm803, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11"A brand neeeeeeew user name!"
Only 1,004,423,876 mcpoints to go and he can come out of hiding. - xtinamo, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11I re-read your post and realize my mistake. For some reason(unknown at this time) I thought you implied that you frequented these particular websites when it was only the one time. I did enjoy your sociologic observations though.
- herbertstrasse, on 06/25/2008, -0/+10I guess that could be construed as another form of 'macabre curiosity'...
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -2/+11I didn't realize you guys at the Hamas office had access to digg...
- christophe971, on 06/25/2008, -2/+11Oh, come on.
The book came out in December 2007. He was just following the common belief. Anyone can be wrong. - toowired77, on 06/25/2008, -3/+11Americans are not as stupid as you. To counter your dumb points:
A. Obama is biracial not just black
B. Family background as American as apple pie. This nation is full of single parent homes. His background works to his advantage
C. Did you watch 'The View" when Michelle was on? She is more likeable than you think.
D. He comes off as confident. Try picking up women without confidence and let me know how that works out.
E. McCain has a temper problem and called his own wife a *****. How does this make him likeable?
F. His former pastor. Read up on American history. If Rev Wright is too radical for you, start going to church more often.
G. There is only one congressman that has ever requested to be sworn in using the Koran, and it is not Obama. You are confusing him with a Minnesota congressman.
H. Who the hell is Larry Craig.
- Tyrghast, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Looks like he wrote a book on a relevant current topic in order to make some quick cash.
- ojk007, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Did fox just get owned?
- acroyear2, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6I support Obama but what you're saying is true which is gut wrenching. I believe in third parties and too often find people SO against it on the basis that they would prefer to vote for someone they believe will win... of course they don't acknowledge the the dark lining of their sentiment: that if others voted how they really felt then that candidate would stand a better chance then they think.
- Locke23, on 06/25/2008, -2/+8So who do you support?
The terrorist Hamas? - notoneofus, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6It may be sunny, and Fox News may have an influence, but the third bit is laughably stupid.
Also, turn off the ***** caps lock. - beabis, on 06/25/2008, -1/+6"this election has been set up for the man to win..."
I thought McCain was the very definition of "the man". - Elranzer, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5I once asked a McCain supporter why he prefers McCain. The best answer I got was because his wife owns a beer distributor.
- kingfoot, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5i think it was supposed to say "obama pwns joo" but written in epic fail.
- xNarrowSoulx, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5Hey, he has the same last name as me... ...Obama '08!
- VgRasta, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4wat
- charm803, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4Because he got a pretty hefty advance to write it.
Aw, come on, admit it, if they paid you $100,000 to write a book about something that MIGHT or MIGHT NOT happen in the near future, you'd take the moola too. - tcpik, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4I'm a typical 25 year old White guy who walked into an African American barber shop in inner city Indianapolis to register voters. I got some weird looks at first, but when I told them I was there to register voters for Sen. Obama I was welcomed and even got my hand shaken. For those of you who don't know....White people just don't walk into African American owned barber shops. Don't tell me this country isn't ready for change.
- mrswirl, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4I bought this book and attempted to read it earlier this year. I could only make it through the first few chapters and had to throw it away because the premise was so specious and flimsy.
Basically, he said Obama couldn't win because he's not enough of an Uncle Tom nor is he 'black' enough [paraphrasing] and that he is stuck in the middle between these two dichotomies. It's a bunch of ***** stereotyping of African American identity conflict if you ask me.
I believe the terms he used was "bargainers" and "challengers". Prominent black people either have to "bargain" with white America to smooth over our racial divisions or they overtly "challenge" whitey by getting in their face about it and in the process, further alienate themselves from mainstream society.
How about the possibility that Obama is simply a talented person who can offer something new to all of America? Isn't the proof that, as a nation, we are finally overcoming our racial past illustrated in the fact that the topic is not even brought up as controversial in the first place?
Isn't it enough that Barack is 'just a man' running for President and not 'a black man' running for President? Whatever happened to, you know, judged by the content of our character and not the color of our skin? - xtinamo, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4Not to detract from what you said, as I was interested by much of it.. but you visit "popular white power website[s]"?
- charm803, on 06/25/2008, -4/+8"bitchy wife" is probably better than McCain's drug addicted-thief of a wife and at least Obama wasn't having an affair.
Let's face it, McCain was at his prime when he was a war hero. That's awesome, but he's no future president. - archiesteel, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4Amen, brother.
- ohmytodd, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4Where is the rest of this interview? I feel like he said one thing and it cuts..??
I CAN HANDLE THE TRUTH! - mrswirl, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4I just can't buy into the bargainer vs. challenger thing. I'll admit that while I'm not black, I have enough black friends and relatives to know that the only ones who put African-Americans into these two 'buckets' are usually themselves. (with that said, I certainly know that pockets of racism still exist in areas but this is a minority viewpoint and doesn't reflect the broader society).
I personally believe that the rest of America has moved on from this stereotypical view of race and that Obama exemplifies this by being a viable candidate in his own right - not just a viable 'black' candidate. - horizonsonfire, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Whew! That locks up a good portion of the electorate ;)
- DavidGX, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Yep, McCain is a major flip flopper. I hope it's NOT ok this time, though.
Obama '08! - r00fus, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Yeah, and we elected a former oilman as President, and guess what happened to the price of oil?
- pintomp3, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3do you get extra mccain action center points if you use all caps?
- acroyear2, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Everyone needs to take into account that depending on any elected official whole-heatedly will always amount to failure.
We need to hold everyone's feet to the fire and in doing so, even a "lesser of two evils" can be a success. We have to vote, even in local elections! And we need to finally put our money where our mouths are. - Mononuclear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Why would anyone write a book that becomes useless in less than a year? Even if Obama didn't win I don't think this book would sell after the elections.. Actually I don't know why anyone would buy this book at any time even when it was first written...
- jinnie, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3i read that book not too long ago. interesting take on the black/white racial conflict, and it's not without its truths. just a few years ago, steele's argument would have held up, but he failed to see just how badly bush would ***** things up and how many people would get fed up. otherwise, the "bargainer v. challenger" model steele posits is quite true in many aspects of african american existence in today's society.
'a bound man' is more useful for some insight into one idea about race relations, rather than a look into barack obama. very short book. i read it in the bookstore over two trips and two americanos. - str1fe, on 06/25/2008, -2/+5What, so a blog isn't allowed to support a candidate without being in cahoots with the party? I actively support Obama, does that mean the Democrats are putting money in my pocket (or something similar) to do so?
- pintomp3, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3"Americans are not as stupid as you."
i really hope you are right, but we've got a horrible track record. - jeffmcneill, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Would have made more quick cash if he would have been right...
- Inverse24, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2This is what I like to call IRONY.
- FutureGuy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2you mean "set up" like for Bush? No I don't think so.
- acroyear2, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2It's cynicism too. I heard the same thing but I took more as an example of their disappointment in the system.
- Charlotte_Web, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2But there's two ways to interpret that subtitle.
"He can't win" -- he's not capable of winning
"He can't win" -- he shouldn't be allowed to win
Considering that the full title of the book is "A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win," the latter interpretation seems to make more sense. However, typical of Media Matters, they cropped out what Steele was saying so we never got the full explanation from him.
This quote from the description on Amazon also backs up the latter interpretation:
"Why he can't win: He's still mired in an ideology of racial victimhood and separatism that Steele (White Guilt), a Hoover Institution fellow and, like Obama, the son of a black father and white mother, deplores in this stimulating, conservative critique."
Article therefore buried as INACCURATE. - christophe971, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Wait, Bush won't be president in (>January 20th) 2009?
