- carpetbomberz, on 03/14/2008, -1/+73I'm appalled that more U.S. Citizens are being investigated in 2006 than non-U.S. citizens. Weren't National Security Letters (NSL) created to allow foreign intelligence info to be gained. Why has it become a domestic intelligence operation?
- swrostmore, on 03/14/2008, -0/+56Meanwhile, yesterday:
President Bush has issued an executive order weakening the Intelligence Oversight Board, which was created by the Ford administration following a Congressional investigation into abuses by intelligence agencies. Among the changes: the order "deleted the board's authority to refer matters to the Justice Department for a criminal investigation" and "terminated the board's authority to oversee each intelligence agency's general counsel and inspector general." (Boston Globe) - DangerCollie, on 03/14/2008, -0/+48Did anyone really think that once they got the tools the FBI would limit their use to hunting terrorists? They can abuse them and no one can even tell their lawyer. This combined with finding out that banks are watching every transaction looking for something illegal, that the telecomms have been monitoring phone and internet traffic with systems activated BEFORE 9/11. This is more than just the FBI abusing NSL's and trying to hide it. This is wholesale spying on the American public on a massive scale. Between the banks, telecos and government, everything you do is being monitored by someone. A broad attack on the principles this country used to stand for. Principles which, apparently, are subject to interpretation when the ends justify the means.
We can now change the tag line to the country formerly known as the land of the free. - vic42482, on 03/14/2008, -0/+44I'm not surprised at anything they do anymore.
- syroncoda, on 03/14/2008, -1/+41DUH. you really believe that the federal organizations in this country actually CARE about the people? ***** naive aren't you?
- kemp34, on 03/14/2008, -1/+34George W. Bush, possibly the worst president in history, should be impeached immediately.
- elliotys, on 03/14/2008, -0/+25I don't even know why they try to cover any of it up. It's not like we're gonna do anything about it.
- Leomarth, on 03/14/2008, -1/+23Your contradiction can be resolved by realizing that it was the point from the beginning.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+20Actually we feel sorry for the citizens of this country. I don't know how you interpret that to mean feeling sorry for terrorists...oh that's right, you were just trolling. Also reported for unneeded profanity.
- Hetman, on 03/14/2008, -1/+20Here is the difference between me and you. I care about america and the constitution. I believe in the freedoms that the bill of right and the rest of the constitution provide to us. And yes I do fear losing these freedoms. Do I fear terrorist, No not one bit. You on the other hand are so scared of terrorism that you well willingly let the government take all your rights away. And instead of standing up for yourself, you praise the government for the false security they give you.
- Waiting2awake, on 03/14/2008, -1/+16George W. Bush, possibly the worst president in history, should be charged, and stand trail, for crimes against humanity and war crimes immediately.
There you go. - Look4Truth, on 03/14/2008, -2/+17The Patriot Act itself is abuse...and not patriotic.
- mckirsch, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14I started reading 1984 last night after the thread on Digg yesterday. I forgot how depressing it is, especially now.
I like the line very early in the book that said "There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized." - greendalek, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14As usual, it's disturbing --even horrifying-- to read this, but it is certain that absolutely NOBODY will be taken to task for any of this. No testimony, no investigations, no firings, nothing. Nobody will be punished for this and you can lay an equal amount of blame at the feet of the Republican White House AND the Democrat-controlled Congress.
You know I'm telling the truth here. I mean, come on. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14No but you sound like a patriot which is something that goes beyond political divisions.
- sigg14, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14why is it that the only people in this country that are held accountable for their actions are the citizens?
- aclockwork3, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14New tag line: 'The land of the unsuspecting citizens who quickly lost their right to privacy and allowed their government to turn fascist"
- dodgejon, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13Wow, talk about a traitor!
- Hetman, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13This is america. We have a thing called the 4th amendment. Please google it and learn it.
- xanderdavis, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Hopefully people are realizing that there will always be terrorists. Always. A-L-W-A-Y-S. The only way to stop it completely and "win the war" is to have absolute control of every single human being on the planet and eliminate identity and free will entirely. It's time to change your calendars, everyone. Welcome to 1984.
- KyleRayner, on 03/14/2008, -0/+12What is your obsession with the Middle East, that you are eager to throw away freedoms your ancestors died for?
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Uhh yeah, actually I can and do.
Let me ask you a question...Why do you hate the USA? - kuantan97, on 03/14/2008, -0/+11Gotta love the weak-kneed subtitle: "...POSSIBLY illegal..."
A quick glance at the 4th Amendment should clear up any confusion. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+11Funny thing is that I'm not even a liberal! :p
- Tenbatsu404, on 03/14/2008, -0/+10This isn't a left/right issue.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+10Thanks! :)
- chronically420, on 03/14/2008, -0/+10ok so tell me, how many terrorist plots were foiled before 9/11? then i want to hear all of the ones theyve actually foiled since 9/11. and back them with factual evidence, not something one of the war profiteers say. and the reason they initially attacked us is because we've been in the middle east forcing our religion beliefs upon them...well not us but our so called "leaders"
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+10The Constitution is "just a piece of paper"? Is that you George? I got news for you, without that piece of paper - there is no America.
- Acewrap, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9It's not that they hate the USA, they just hate freedom.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9I have a bridge I'd like to sell you, you can trust me.
- hydroplane, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9War is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength. - Hetman, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8What? Just a piece of paper. First off I do not want to fight isreals war. It has nothing to do with me or my country. Secondly Iraq was never a strategic location. Finally im not one to say this because I believe that if your american you should try to change the law not leave the country. But if you are so happy with the way isreal is being run why do you not move their. You know they will let you as long as you join the military for 2 years. "it is required for them." If I do not have my rights I prefer death. And I am not even sure that their is another life after this.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8A couple of cups of coffee, you?
- Acewrap, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8What business is it of yours? Are you some kind of "Nanny stater?"
- BossKey, on 03/14/2008, -1/+8But...to keep America free, we must destroy our freedoms. What part of that do you not understand?
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7You do realize that your post could be construed as treason? Our soldiers, politicians, judges, etc. do not swear an oath of allegiance to the country, the president or the flag. Their oath is to the US Constitution.
If you are willing to relinquish your rights, so be it. Be prepared for the backlash from your masters once they have no more need of you. - Waiting2awake, on 03/14/2008, -1/+8I think, and I may be wrong here, that what suzywang3000(Sounds like a transvestite sex doll) is trying to point out is the old adage "When the cats away, the mice will play". American citizens have a responsibility to their country. That responsibility is the same as the price of freedom - Eternal Vigilance. The American people were asleep on the job(The cat was away) - and so politicians did what they natural would do. Spy agencies natural did what they do. It was really up to the American people to say NO. Not that that is easy given the political climate.
But I am starting to think that it is coming to a time when the citizens finally say no, the Government may say "Make us", and I am not sure people are ready for that - yet. - Hetman, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7They are not my brothers. And if your christianity is comming before being american then you are not my brother either. Since the war has begun oil prices have skyrocketed. If your theory is correct gas should be cheaper. Finally we are capable of supporting ourselfs. This is america. This is america we can take care of our own. We do not need the middleeast.
- unfairunbalance, on 03/14/2008, -1/+8Welcome to Amerika. Hey Comrade, go back to sleep. KGB er.. I meant the CIA and Motherland security will keep you safe.
- kuantan97, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7Who's your employer, Mossad?
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6Typical. Respond with an accusation rather than a fact or debatable topic. You neo-cons/socialists are incredibly easy to spot.
My response to you? Please show me where the US Constitution authorizes the government to have any say in what a sovereign citizen drinks, smokes, snorts or ingests? I won't hold my breath waiting for an answer since I already know it. - ulmedas, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6Unfortunately, we get only what we ask for from our elected representatives. It makes me sad to think that the folks running our government were selected by the citizens. Many of whom still support everything the government chooses to do without a second though. I fear the "who cares if they listen to my conversations, I have nothing to hide" folks will look back one day and wonder how things became so restrictive, but maybe not. Ho Hum
- KyleRayner, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6They should think about moving. Its nothing new, people have been leaving countries of oppression and war for a long time. But if they choose to stay, then they have to face the consequences of the region. I dont think its the USA's job to police the world. Its like giving federal money to people who keep rebuilding their beach house after every hurricane season.
- kuantan97, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6How does the "FBI work for the people of the United States" when their very existence is implicitly forbidden in the US Constitution? To which "people" do you refer?
- WeHaveAvoice, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6"Even if you are in a minority of one,

"war against terrorism" give me a break! - NightVortez, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."-Benjamin Franklin
It's amazing how quick some people are able to give their liberty away just so our country is "free from terrorists" - Izult, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Dear god it's the Stasi files all over again :-(
- Jlaugh, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Idiot Jesus was a jewish reformer. The new testament is a criticism of the old.
