- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19"a billion-dollar program"
holy crap, what are they spending that money on? Just give the kids a bus ticket and send em down the library. - yonbeastie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The title made me laugh out loud, then I died a little inside
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8bush: new-que-ler
teacher: no mr president, like this "new-clee-arr"
bush: new-que-ler
teacher: *sigh* - jessssse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7it's funny that these "conservatives" who hate big government and bureaucracy, have set up the biggest government and one of the worst bureaucracies we've ever had.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7especially when i re-read the title, and realised that words like beset are likely not in bush's vocabulary....
- h2gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5one more reason the feds need to get out of the education business and leave that money with the states. If the states had the money that we spend on salaries and programs at the federal level.....
- tadda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While systematically stripping away the rights of an individual to privacy and creating a climate in which any casual political discussion even moderately critical of the regime is frowned on.
- habfan29, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I read the title and thought this:
Bush has his own reading program? Well at least he might be able to pronounce words better now in his speeches!
...Oh, it's an administration program, how sad. - e68895f, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Is our children learning?
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Really, in his mind its nuke-you-lar. He only thinks in terms of aggression.

@LoneRanger
I am digging you up because I feel some of the points you make are worthy of discussion, though, like the liberals you seem to have a problem with, you are also resorting to invective to try to make a rational point. This is the tactic that tends to stifle true discourse, something I gather you really want on this and other subjects.
The thing I believe that needs to be said here is that it is neither a Liberal OR Conservative viewpoint that has created this kind of waste and mismanagement. It is a corporate mindset that excuses all mistakes, as long as ones own hands are clean. Whether it is some "lefty" administrator doling out the dough to her friends, or the current administrations gifts to Halliburton and others, each is only trying to improve their own and their friends "bottom line". The culture we all need to be paying attention to is the culture of corruption, regardless of political affiliation. The idea of being entitled to take advantage of any opportunity to "profit" has become so ingrained in our western psyches that we excuse almost any behavior if it can be shown to have generated some profit to someone somewhere. Even the heirs of the convicted Enron CEO are rewarded under this mindset, since it wasn't their fault that the money their father passed on was stolen by him, not them.
But more than that, I would like to invite you to try to be a part of the solution to your own frustration by avoiding the harsh words, regardless of provocation. People quit actually hearing what you or I say, on both sides, when they see cursing, "wingnuts" and other invective. It doesn't ad to the potency of your points; it makes them hard to see.
@TwinkyJesus
(dugg you up for same reason above)
I think a closer perusal of posts on this site will show that while there are those who resort to such tactics, it comes from BOTH sides, not just the libs. And it totally destroys the message. Many on both sides see it as a way to keep the anger in place so honest discussion will not take place. This is, I feel, a deliberate tactic on the part of many, though there are those sheep (again on BOTH sides) who think its fun to do and continue to promote anger as the primary response to any subject. The rage isn't as one sided as you might want to think. So if your comment is an honest expression of your frustration, I suggest that YOU start the intelligent discussion rather than giving up and deciding to join in the flaming. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5favoritism and mismanagement in this administration? that's unpossible!
- aceg1357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i hope you don't actually feel smug after such a comment.

- Muddle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"CRAWFORD, TEXAS -- A tragic fire on Sunday destroyed the personal library of President George W. Bush. Both of his books have been lost.
A presidential spokesman said the president was devastated, as he had not finished coloring the second one."
Sorry I can't recall who's quote this is. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** surprise
- rmqjr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder if the author learned his (or her) writing style from the reading program:
"A scorching internal review of the Bush administration's reading program says the Education Department ignored the law and ethical standards to steer money how it wanted." - CyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PDF copy (warning 3 Mb) of the report http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oig/aireports/i13f0017.pdf
- Frodo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's the Bush - Management connection that sounds weird. He acts like a puppet run by his advisors. They say 'Good idea', he parrots 'Good idea'.
- jeffiek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope you're not teaching English.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks, I appreciate your positive suggestions.
I think, though, if you look at the posts that are older than mine, I posted fairly early, they are all, just bush bashing, no discussion or debate, just one after the other insults, jabs and eruptions of liberal rhetoric. I waited before posting to see if someone would say something remotely related to the article or just spew more spurious BS. When the BS got as high as my watch, I knew it was too late to save my shoes, and posted to Loneranger... and swam out. - aceg1357, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3as a teacher i can tell you this report or how it is being reported is not credible. the education department has every right to fund programs and administer them as they see fit. no law was broken. school districts can either accept the program and the money or reject it. as far as panels picking favored publishers, that certainly goes on in all education programs. in this case the investigation needs to prove it before action is to be taken.
in most cases the vast majority of the money from this program goes to hiring a reading teacher or teacher training.
BTY less than 5% of school funding comes from the education department. i would just assume to get rid of the education department entirely, but most liberals don't like that for some reason. - toddmoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hope we didn't spend a lot of money on this assessment, most of us could probably surmised this without a study.
and old Neil Bush has a Software Reading education tool, I'm willing to bet my house that somehow, lots and lots of that software is being used in old bushy's program. - thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Ther is nuting wong wif my engrish mak me pwezidint oneday to!
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4@ Loneranger:
The mistake you made here, is to attempt to assert a point of view with an intelligent theme, into this discussion. The correct behavior is an ad hominem attack on the President's intelligence, family, sanity or home state. See, this isn't really a forum for discussion, it is a liberal rage-cage.
You are supposed to submit only stories that are flame-bait, then everyone rages on how it's Bush's fault, despite the reality that much of what happens in the Federal government is done, condoned, overseen and orchestrated by Democrat/Liberals more so than Republicans. At best there is equal guilt for all legislation etc. But, Libs have driven the education "bus" since inception. They have always been inside the workings of all "Great Society" functions. Now that a Republican is in office, the corruption is blamed on him, rather than those who were in place before, during and after his tenure.
Just make a joke like "Bush can read???" and forget about intelligent discourse. - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6In this particular case Bush really had nothing to do it. The head or the program wasn't doing as she had been instructed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5What a dishonest story! Of COURSE there's fraud and mismanagement in the education dept! No matter who is in the White House, the government is managed by liberals! As someone who works just a block from the Capitol, I know that there is a low-level insurgency against the Bush administration. Whether it's putting their feet up on the desk and ignoring orders from above or deliberate mismanagement, liberal bureaucrats are engaged in a deliberate movement to sabotage the President's programs. I'm not saying there is some vast, left-wing conspiracy. I'm saying it is a leftist mindset. Liberals are willing to sabotage their country, rather than comply with Bush policies and programs.
If liberalism is the solution to the country's problems, why must you always be so dishonest?
