- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -13/+157Hey guys, people like that sergeant are going to come back and move into our neighborhoods. We better hope our kids don't get on his lawn.
- reeder, on 10/10/2007, -32/+172What we have done to Iraq is monstrous. What we haven't done in Burma and the Sudan is also monstrous. I often wonder how humanity can survive with all the evil, violence, and destruction we unleash on the world and ourselves. Maybe we shouldn't.
- pintomp3, on 10/17/2007, -7/+115become a "terrorist". seriously, this is how extremism is generated. when a generation of children know nothing but poverty and violence, you end up with criminals and terrorists.
- Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -11/+93Humanity can slip away from us so fast.
Our army has a kill rate of 0.7 Iraqis per active soldier, or 0.1 Iraqis per soldier, active or on leave.
That's a lot of killing. Lot of hurt souls, and many war twisted minds, we're going to have coming back. - jimmiss, on 10/10/2007, -12/+89What would you do if that was your dad who was killed?
- PhantomBantam, on 10/10/2007, -7/+75Alright, internet tough guy. That would have fixed everything.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+61Chances are once he's back, he will end up in law enforcement. That is exactly the type they seem to be looking for these days.
- RichStevenson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+56Never been in the service myself but isn't a soldier allowed/required to disobey an illegal order?
- seks03, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43I agree, when you have nothing to live for, attacking those who caused your misery is an easy choice. This is why I believe that there is not much action on the part of US citizens today.
The truth is that even though it has gotten bad in the US and we have lost many freedoms we all have a lot going for us, our jobs, our significant others, family, quality of life, possessions, etc.
it wont be until these are taken away from us and when we begin to be inconvenience that people will take action.... think about it, if someone came and killed your family, destroyed your home, you lost your job, no more television, no more internet, no electricity, water, etc, what else would you do? think about it......
the Government also knows this and that is why even though they are removing our freedoms they will try hard as possible to not inconvenience us until it is to late and we can not do anything about it. why else do you think B**h urged us to "go to Disneyland, go shopping, etc" when this whole thing started because he/and others knows the minute we are inconvenienced or have to sacrifice something we will rise up and not take it anymore. - Lorddias, on 10/10/2007, -6/+41No wonder they hate us. We have men in there who would rather be the terrorists instead of hunt the real terrorists.
- regedit2D, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Yes, in fact it is illegal to obey an illegal order. It places you just as much at fault as the commander. You even have the right to defend yourself with force against your superior should he try to attack you for not following his order.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32I am damned proud of soldiers who can come forward and tell what actually happened, especially when they were an integral part of the event. Doing that requires courage and honor.
- Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28You are paid to kill "enemy combatants". Someone convulsing on the ground is "a prisoner".
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Yeah, let's digg kelchm up. It's cool to equate internet memes with heartfelt admissions of murdering a civilian.
- VinceNoir, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29I'll just come out and say it: you're a ***** *****. You don't go into the military to kill people. You go in the military to try and save lives and hopefully in the end, bring about peace. Killing is the last resort. Regardless of what you may think. You simply prove that you've failed as a human being.
- btgoss, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25I think the problem is one of degrees. There was no question that Hitler and the Nazi's presented a clear danger to the entire world. There truly was little or no "gray" area with the war against Hitler. When you have a world that is almost totally united in a cause, it is much easier to deal with things like that. This war offers none of that. The reasons for being there are vague. The enemy is indistinguishable from the general population, and there are no "lines" of combat. This type of total war produces this type of action. We saw the same things in Vietnam. We should leave now before we lose more of that generation.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -7/+28What's your definition of bravery? Someone who murders a bunch of people? While wearing a uniform? Or is that part optional?
P.s., if your grandfather killed scores of people and it truly didn't affect him in the slightest then he is a sociopath. That's not healthy. It's human to empathize. My grandmother has a much different, more emotional story to tell about her family's escape from Poland. - Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Most of the WWII vets I know, including my own grandfather, had a very difficult time speaking about the war. In fact, I don't think my granddad ever mentioned it to me directly.
- georgebnet, on 10/10/2007, -10/+28Can you guys please make sure Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld pay a visit to the Haga tribunal? They should be quite comfortable using the former residence of Slobodan Milosevic there. I suggest Bush be assigned that room.
- mellenger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15if anyone hasn't seen "the war tapes" i suggest you download it off pirate bay or mininova. I couldn't believe how the city is so ripped to shreds but then there are these kids with backpacks on walking to school in the middle of it. it blew my mind that with this crazy violence going on that humans adapt and make the best of their current situation. i hope this is all over soon.
- Thuktun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Easy enough to say, but probably damned hard to do when the time comes. I wouldn't want to be in that situation.
- ShuttleDisaster, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17***** idiot.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Then there would be at least three people dead.
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19One of these days, some will return back home alive. If you call it that. Another war lost. A couple generations later, our kids will have forgotten the pain of history and start a new one. History repeats.
- bsmang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I don't know about shooting the SGT, but telling him "No Sir!" might've been a good choice.
- georgebnet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It should not be America's job to police the world. Burma is a first grade example of what the UN should be trying to prevent. Instead of passing resolutions against Burma the UN should be putting their minds together for a real solution to the problem there.
Same with Iraq. The US thinks they got a god-given right/duty to help the people of Iraq when they don't. Certainly, if they can convince the UN council there is a need to intervene, either in Iraq or in Burma then yes, by all means, do that. If they think the UN is too much talk and too little action (and I happen to agree with that) then start changing the UN from within. Not go around it. - tem2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13When you put so many thousands of people in uniforms of authority, give them weapons, and drop them into a long-term, high-stress, life-threatening situation far from home, a few of them will crack. It's a horrible thing that should never have happened, but the fact that there's a court marshal with a public transcript is a healthy sign.
It's a testament to the armed forces that incidents like this are as rare as they are, that abuse allegations are investigated rather than covered up, and that responsible parties are suitably punished. Or at least we can hope he's suitably punished... - williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Soldiers have a duty to refuse and report illegal orders. Failure to do so is itself a crime.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Unlike his CO who gave the order? He gets it, right?
- reaganite, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I serve and am a Ron Paul supporter. Quit generalizing.
- georgebnet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12... too late, gimmie that towel...
No seriously. Of course he could be lying about it. It's not just this particular situation that's getting me so angry. There are numerous witnesses to extreme brutality on the part of the american forces and contractors (the mercenaries your govt pays to kill people in Iraq). Some of them could be lying but not all of them.
Or you could bury your head in the sand and pretend it's all cool and nothing wrong happened in Iraq. You are the good guys and the Iraqi people have been liberated... the American way... - mattmoto, on 10/10/2007, -14/+24Uh, while what he said is poetic... it makes no sense.
America will not fall because of Iraq or Iran. Yeah, the Iraq war should stop, and it would be stupid to go into Iran... but it won't end the USA. The USA has survived the social, military, and international turmoil known as the Vietnam war... which was MUCH worse than Iraq. Vietnam spanned multiple presidencies, and instituted a draft.
Iraq... not so much.
but, hell, I'm gonna be buried. Because on digg, sensationalism > common sense. - iticu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Oh god, my faith in Humanity just depleted abit more. And believe me; there's not alot left.
- SKick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12***** you for not doing anything about it either, considering you have about as much control on the situation as any American citizen would.
- arcanistherogue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12***** you.
- iticu, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9At the moment, anyone who fights back against the ocupation is labeled a "Terrorist".
- georgebnet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11That's not combat. That's murder.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14It's really not the fault of American citizens. They have little control of their tax money. As a Canadian I'm infuriated that so much of our limited funds is being spent on our military occupation in Afghanistan. I'm against it, and I've voted against it, yet it persists. What more can I do? Drive to an army base and sabotage the guns?
My heart bleeds for America and Canada. - drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9nerve gas courtesy of US department of defense...
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8He did that nearly 20 ***** years ago, and we already fought a war over such things, 16 years ago, and he lost, and the war was over.
If you are seriously using "gassing the kurds" as justification, put it in perspective... We could invade Russia for invading Afghanistan and it would be more timely!
The guy has to do something new to justify war; we can't invade japan next week with the justification of, "you invaded china, and that was mean." "But we already fought world war 2!" "oh that was for pearl harbor, this is for your occupation of asia." - 3adkied, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"... buildings in the area..." "...a nearby house..." So killing everyone in the neighborhood is justified now? Facts like that ARE meaningless. They do nothing to demonstrate the guilt of the Iraqi who was killed, let alone show why killing him was the appropriate course of action.
- SirGunslinger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8speaking of internet tough guys...
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6We just had a landslide election to vote the republicans out, we only have two ***** options, republicans and democrats here, the democrats won everything on a position of anti war.
And now that our elected representitives are in office with a clear mandate from the people to end this war what do they do? Jack Squat. - georgebnet, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11There is no such thing as a country going bankrupt. Yet what we once knew was a super-rich super-power, the USA, that _can_ become a thing of the past. Actually it kinda did already... nobody thinks the US economy is all that well anymore.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How many times have we been down this; "Let's give them the benefit of the doubt path?"
- GeekyLotus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6To add another thing, yours is the typical warmonger response.... love it or leave it. The freedom of speech you talk so much about is exactly what you seem to hate. Any dissent is what you seem to fear. If any dare say that our US government might be doing something wrong then we should leave... not use our guaranteed freedom of speech and fix it if we perceive a problem. Who are the real cowards?
- shoover, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Atta boy, fight stupidity with stupidity...
- quaxon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6give them high-tech weaponry, guns, ammo, humvees and all the other equipment an army needs and i bet you they wont hide in the civilian population anymore. the fact is that WE ARE FIGHTING CIVILIANS, not the other way around. we attacked their villages, their cities, and they took up arms to defend it. who here is the real terrorists? the ones defending their families any way they can or the ones destroying everything they had?
- thewatchman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10your ratios sound bogus to me, can you pin-point your sources?
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I was arguing the necessity of an invading army with a former soldier last week, and one of his arguments that began to sway me was his description of the rights of a US soldier. It is the duty of US soldiers to disobey illegal orders, he said. The rules of engagement are of paramount importance. Don't kill civilians, and don't kill medics unless they're holding a weapon.
