- MarkCiccone, on 04/16/2009, -39/+286Well can someone here explain to me why these tea parties are happening? I figure these protesters are confusing what the tea party actually was. The Boston Tea Party was in response to taxes the colonists had to pay on things like tea which was with out representation. But these protesters are 'throwing in the tea' over taxes that their elected officials imposed?
I just don't really understand the protests and I would greatly appreciate someone to fill me in! - JakeBC, on 04/15/2009, -58/+294I'm sure Anderson would know.
- bongo, on 04/16/2009, -10/+111Geh, don't look at any Glenn Beck website to obtain any real information. I heard a bunch of interviews on NPR yesterday, and it seems to me that people are protesting for various reasons. Some people are unhappy with the Federal Reserve system, some people are unhappy with the Stimulus and bailouts, and others are under the impression that Obama is going to raise their taxes.
- imnojezus, on 04/16/2009, -30/+127By the way, the report you're referring to was intended for the last administration, and was accompanied by a separate report which mis-labeled left-wing groups as well. The reason you're hearing about it is because this administration is apologizing for those actions. Just a little food for thought before you get too riled up.
- drmangrum, on 04/16/2009, -12/+94The tea parties aren't really about being taxed. Most people understand that taxation is needed and for the most part, the amount people pay isn't THAT bad. The tax code is a separate discussion though, so I digress.
The tea parties are a manifestation of the anger and resentment people are feeling towards the federal government. It's something that has been bubbling under the surface of society for decades. The recent corporate bailouts is just the match that set the fuse to smoldering.
We pay taxes, yet our infrastructure is crumbling.
We pay taxes, yet our schools are falling farther and farther behind.
We pay taxes, yet our health care system is woefully antiquated and broken.
We pay taxes, yet we slip further and further into debt as a nation.
Our politicians live a far better lifestyle than the bulk of the people they represent.
Our politicians are supposed to be public servants that represent the will of the people, yet they rarely do.
We have climbing unemployment, but corporations keep offshoring jobs.
There are some things the government does well. Our postal system is one of the best in the world. Our military is arguably the best in the world. Our food and water is some of the best and cleanest in the world.
The problem is the bad is quickly and definitively eclipsing the good. Looking at the current problems, "Anger" seems a terribly inadequate word. - strangewill, on 04/16/2009, -12/+89Err, but aren't the majority of Americans being taxed less?
- Karmashock, on 04/16/2009, -57/+125Way to raise the bar Anderson... clearly you're maintaining a high standard of professionalism. /s
Whether you agree or disagree with the tea parties this sort of coverage is disgraceful. Who are they trying to compete with? Comedy Central? Is John Stewart the new goal for journalism these days? Because not only will none of them be as funny as him, we do need some ACTUAL news coverage. So it's a double fail... they succeed only in being dull hacks and fail at any semblance of journalism. It's just pathetic. - Chahrlie5, on 04/16/2009, -19/+87Journalism at its finest
- drmangrum, on 04/16/2009, -4/+71@blackhole
You can mail a letter from California and it will get to New York in 2 or 3 days and all it cost you was 40 some odd cents. That's not bad. - drmangrum, on 04/16/2009, -39/+103Seriously, all this juvenile snickering over the double entendre of tea bagging is getting a little old.
The movement may have been fostered by Fox News and a few neo cons, but there are plenty of Democrats and Libertarians in on it as well. This isn't about Red vs Blue, Liberal vs Conservative, elephant vs donkey, or Democrat vs Republican. This is about US vs THEM. "Us" being The People and "them" being the Government.
This is something that has been simmering away for more than a decade. People are tired of ALWAYS seeing a deficit budget and overspending. People are tired of NEVER seeing any progress. People are tired of being ignored while the Government and Corporations get more and more powerful.
People are quick to forget that politicans are public SERVANTS. However, they act more like our masters. When a politician gains officer, people call it "coming into power." Why? They shouldn't have any power. The power should belong to the people. It's time for our politicians to DO THEIR JOBS and listen to the people. - orion846, on 04/16/2009, -8/+68i'm a veteran, and not pretending to be offended to get attention. it's quite easy, you should try it.
- slymi2005, on 04/16/2009, -9/+63From glen beck, really? You couldn't find a better source?
- wendelgee2, on 04/16/2009, -17/+69Didn't we just get a tax cut?

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/04/14/dhs-report-rig ... - johnhummel, on 04/16/2009, -13/+57Wonderful. So when a report mentions that they're worried about "right wing groups" (and notice they didn't call them conservative - two different things) targeting veterans - you automatically assume that they're investigating veterans, not the groups. In other words - they're targeting the *potential terrorist groups* in order to *protect* the veterans.
It's like hearing that there are investigations to check out gangs infiltrating schools, and you get in a huff that people would dare think that the school kids are under investigation, ignoring that it's the *gangs* that are the target to protect the kids. - TheNik, on 04/16/2009, -7/+50No it wasn't. They didn't put tea in bags and the Boston Tea Party wasn't about being taxed, it was about being taxed while not being represented in the British parliament.
- XenoSNK, on 04/16/2009, -15/+57I think it'd be harder to talk when you're being teabagged.
- imnojezus, on 04/16/2009, -9/+50Ok Glynth. Where was your outrage over the last 8 years then? It's hard for you to claim that this is a non-partisan effort when the protesters are doing everything in their power to pin it on a president who is working to make positive changes to the system AS WE SPEAK. Letting the banks fail would have been disastrous. Yes, companies like AIG took advantage, but they only go to prove that more oversight is needed when public funds are at stake... which is exactly what is happening RIGHT NOW. On top of that, the current administration is DECREASING the average American's tax burden, and making the richest 3% to pay their fair share. Coincidentally, Mr. Glen Beck, the guy you quoted as the voice of the "average" American, is a member of that richest 3%. Now you see why he's whining so much.
So seriously... what are the tea parties all about? - strangewill, on 04/16/2009, -6/+47The report is entitled, and focused on, "Right Wing Extremists". If you're an extremist, you should be considered a threat, no matter what end you're on.
- manjas8, on 04/16/2009, -9/+50It's really about the out of control spending. Anyone who thinks it's about Obama raising their taxes is retarded and deserves to be made fun of. Those idiots didn't get involved until Fox News started covering it.
- bestadvocate, on 04/16/2009, -18/+57These comments need a bury brigade. Badly.
- imnojezus, on 04/16/2009, -3/+40Yep. If you read the report, it sites that information as being collected in November 2008. Obama was President-Elect. Bush was President.
Haha. - dreamofspirals, on 04/16/2009, -27/+64I am a veteran of the first gulf war and I am not offended in the least!
...an honest report that hits close to home and your offended? Please. Look in the mirror and be honest for a change. Many vets are coming back from a wrong war disenfranchised and angry with no where to turn. They are messed up and very capable of causing harm to themselves and others. The gov(past and present) are letting our soldiers fall through the cracks. Tie this in to the already ignorant and angry far right looneys who have a history of violence and there is a mix for trouble. This is historic fact plain and simple. - NJank, on 04/16/2009, -3/+39You're an Extremist? (as in Islamic 'Fundamentalist', KKK Christian, Abortion Clinic Bomber) Well then yes sir, I hope they're get an eye on you before you hurt someone for your ideological cause.
- Charlotte_Web, on 04/16/2009, -11/+45The media is now defending the government.
- AlexCrawford, on 04/16/2009, -38/+72TEA: Taxed Enough Already
- messiahb, on 04/16/2009, -11/+44Shhh too many questions is unamerican.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/16/2009, -2/+35I think the assumption here is that Anderson is gay.
- lovek, on 04/16/2009, -9/+38I can't tell whether your homophobic, or saluting Anderson's success with the ladies.
Why does everyone assume "teabagging" is a strictly homosexual thing? - tekgnos, on 04/16/2009, -17/+46Well think of the Federal reserve. They inflate our currency year after year, assuring us its for our own good, which destroys our savings.
Inflation is a tax.
Did you elect anyone in the FED? No, you didn't. It is actually a private corporation with a federal name, like federal express.
So there is an example of taxation without representation. The bailouts are also probably the biggest reason people are protesting and we need to keep that rage going to throw out any elected official that voted for the bailouts in 2010. - DOCNM, on 04/16/2009, -3/+31you who? you dan? you TheNik? Who is this you they don't listen to? And you have to admit, that that you is pretty dumb to keep voting them in. Unless this 'you' is the minority, in which case: suck it up because this is how democracy works.
- Paranor01, on 04/16/2009, -6/+33out of touch with your reality you mean
- Crazyredivan, on 04/16/2009, -7/+34You know what? People have every right to go out and protest whatever the hell they want. I have no problem with whatever they want to say: pro-war, anti-war, pro gay marriage, anti abortion; it doesn't matter because the freedom to be able to say it is one of the most important freedoms our country offers.
But to make up a ***** acronym T.E.A., then to purposefully associate it with tea and tea parties- to the point of mailing tea bags to D.C.- then bitching that "oh, we're not trying to rip off the concept of the Boston Tea Party" is just insane. You have to know that people are going to say "Huh, tea party. Boston. Dumping tea." To try to suggest that it was not a calculated move is naive.
And no one would be calling these people Teabaggers if they had some common sense and used loose tea! People do realize they can buy tea that's not in a bag, right? - inactive, on 04/15/2009, -142/+168Gosh...I found out today that as a veteran I'm a right wing terrorist risk.
Good.
And I haven't even begun to fight. - strangewill, on 04/16/2009, -6/+32@manjas8:
That was back when it was a Libertarian Party thing, now it's just *****. - inactive, on 04/16/2009, -5/+31Yeah, people seem to think we should pay absolutely no taxes and the government should be drowned in a bath tub. Never mind if we need to go to war (I mean, if there's a real battle we need to fight), or these are the same ***** who complain about the condition of their streets. You idiots need to realize that taxes are dramatically lower than they have been. The argument should be about how this money is being used, and if the government if ***** that up, vote them out. Use the powers we have to demand accountability.
- leozh, on 04/16/2009, -47/+72Considering how much attention these "grass-roots" protests have gotten in the media, it is good that someone is showing them for what they are, a farce.
George Bush called the millions protesting the Iraq War a focus group, what does that make these protests? - blacklilyninja, on 04/16/2009, -36/+60TEA bagging has been the FOX network's way of trying to convince the public that obama is bad. It's pretty much been headed by glenn beck. FOX held 4 major rallies hosted by their supposed non partisan news program talking heads.
Its crap. Fox is crap. it means nothing. - MarkCiccone, on 04/16/2009, -21/+45Thanks, I can see why they are protesting now, but don't agree. I am highly suspicious of Glen Beck and his motives and wish there was another site to explain these protests but thanks in any case.
- BoxAdorable, on 04/16/2009, -4/+27I was under the assumption that teabagging was more of a 19 year old frat boy thing.
- PixelMagic, on 04/16/2009, -4/+26Because Anderson said "It's hard to talk when you're teabagging." Therefore, it would imply experience in trying to speak with balls in his mouth. Since male species are the only one's with testicles, it is therefore inferred that he is homosexual from having balls in his mouth while trying to speak.
- imnojezus, on 04/16/2009, -2/+23I'm confused... did you just label the Bush administration as "leftist"... because all those things happened under his watch.
- jba68, on 04/16/2009, -10/+30then you need to explore more media outlets. If you think fox is the most reliable source of news, then you are really hampering your own thought process.
There are many news agencies.. explore them all, get a rounded view of the events that are being reported. Think for yourself, and do not listen to rhetoric or propganda. - chinaman1212, on 04/16/2009, -9/+29Our media is still trying to put this in a bipartisan category by making jokes. it keeps us watching them and talking about them.
- Keggluneq, on 04/16/2009, -4/+24"Gosh...I found out today that as a veteran I'm a right wing terrorist risk.
Good.
And I haven't even begun to fight."
I guess your little veiled threat has just proven them right. - xGORDOx, on 04/16/2009, -10/+30The people who pay into the system have been overtaken by the the people who recieve from the system.
This is always a sign of a society that will eventually crumble under it's own bureaucracy.
Does it create anger towards the FED, yea.
Does it create anger towards the Stimuls, yea
Does it create anger towards politicians not reading something before signing it, yea.
Does it create anger towards the fact that the Obama admin won't allow the public to read the Stimulus Bill, yea.
It is anger at the fact that less pay in and more people get paid out.
I truly can't understand how that frustration can be perceived as a bad thing, but maybe thats because I work 60 hours a week and still struggle to raise my family. I guess that makes me a bad person, or at least a racist right wing extremeist neocon here on Digg. - inactive, on 04/16/2009, -8/+27None of that matters unless the government drastically reduces spending.
Has he promised to do that? - wacked, on 04/16/2009, -10/+29So the man is gay and probably teabags. Anyone who wouldn't recognize him as gay is deluded. But that he is means nothing to me.
It's those Republican closet homosexuals and pedophiles that I worry about. Need to keep an eye on them.
Homosexuality (not that I see anything wrong with it) and pedophilia (which should be a capital offense) seem to go hand in hand with Republicanism as it does with religious preachers!
Calling these people Tea baggers is very appropriate. -
