- pennsykid2000, on 09/30/2008, -9/+57Regarding the rejection of the bailout plan, where was this backbone by Congressional Republicans when Bush was claiming a national security emergency posed by Iraq? We not only didn't get independence from Congressional Republicans, we got ridicule of anyone who questioned the president's flimsy case for war (“Freedom Fries”, anyone?).
However, while war was not needed in Iraq, something does need to be done to clean up the economic mess. Wall Street titans are mostly responsible for it, but the Republican president and past Republican Congresses deserve much of the blame, because of their extreme laissez-faire deregulation philosophy and inattention to the growing problem on their watch. Thus, it is ironic that the current Republicans in Congress are presenting the largest obstacle to a solution.
No one will be cheering a year from now, when unemployment tops 10%, the Dow is at 5,000, and China is calling all the shots internationally and dictating how we must handle our economy. All those against this deal now will cluelessly say to Congress, "Why didn't you do something to prevent this?" - phroztbyt3, on 09/30/2008, -7/+40personally I think that Jessica Simpson should be Mccain's running mate.... shes hotter... and probably smarter at this point.
... Ridiculous... simply ridiculous. And yet republicans STILL will vote for them, utter stupidity. How stubborn can you possibly be. For all you religious freaks out their, God has sent you a signal, MULTIPLE SIGNALS, and yet you still can't just vote for the Black man. Did you ever think that it might be a test?!.. to see if you can accept anyone but an old senile white man and his hillbilly running mate. - magus_melchior, on 09/30/2008, -3/+34There's only one way McCain can possibly salvage his campaign, other than cheating on Election Day, and even then, that's going to be very hard to do since the Obama campaign is pushing voters to hard-to-hack paper ballots. Many of those ballots will be cast well in advance of November 4, so he doesn't have much more than a month-- in some cases, he has less than a couple of weeks to decide on his strategy.
The salvage plan: He must reject the combative politics of the past few months, come clean with his party and his country, and face Obama on the issues like a real man, not a macho man trying to prove something. The neoconservatives are not going to like that one bit, and a good number of Republicans may abandon him as a "weakling", but if he wants to regain the honor he lost in recent months, he must let them go.
If he does this, he will regain a good number of the women voters who thought Obama was a gracious gentleman in the first debate. That alone will be a boost his campaign can begin to work from.
The question then is, is McCain man enough to do all this, or will his stubbornness destroy his reputation? - workfaster, on 09/30/2008, -3/+25HuffPo's link to the AP article isn't working (it links right back to itself).
Here's the AP article in full: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hocXiEYKKd07Oxu ... - johnnr2, on 09/30/2008, -2/+23MALWARE ALERT: DO NOT CLICK ANY "VIDEO" LINK POSTED BY USER "STIVEBANKS" (first response above)
- Insightful, on 09/30/2008, -3/+22I think McCain should suspend his campaign again to take a nap. Let Palin go on to more media interviews. We could all use a good laugh as out economy tanks.
- JavanSClark, on 09/30/2008, -4/+22Hmm.. a conspicuous absence of Republican Trolls....
- USArugula, on 09/30/2008, -2/+19Link leads to auto-install malware. Buried, reported, blocked.
- magus_melchior, on 09/30/2008, -2/+17I think they saw an opportunity for a power grab, and took it-- besides, Bush was enjoying high approval ratings immediately after 9/11 and they knew with the public behind him they could push through the bills they wanted, especially with a majority in both houses.
Power has a way of blinding you; the desire to keep power has a way of rendering you deaf. - holesome, on 09/30/2008, -3/+17Republican Reps mutinied, they desperately don't want to be seen as aligned with Bush & McCain. With 5 weeks to go...? Hard to imagine them rallying behind McCain and the perky rookie.
The fractures in the GOP forecast a fundamental dissatisfaction with the party leadership, probably because they have their ears tuned to the voters back home. http://obamesque.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/once-uni ... - barbiesnow, on 09/30/2008, -2/+16the craziness of that bill is...are you ready for this? HE VOTED FOR IT.
- ironhide, on 09/30/2008, -1/+14Actually, since the bill failed in the House, neither McCain or Obama (or any other SENATOR) for that matter, voted.
- 5celery, on 09/30/2008, -1/+14bear wrestling not enough - must include nudity and a honey covered Palin
- porkdanish, on 09/30/2008, -7/+16He needs to buy a go kart.
- cadmiumpaint, on 09/30/2008, -1/+9wow. another republican liar. The vote was in the house. Obama serves in the Senate. There is a difference mr. professor.
- theutopian, on 09/30/2008, -2/+9What I really don't get is how Republicans are repeatedly shown that McCain is not a Republican, not a conservative, a terrible leader, makes poor decisions and yet they still vote for him just because he's a Republican.
I have no party loyalty. Nobody should have party loyalty.
It's about the best man for the job. - ironhide, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7A "joke" should contain humor. You fail.
- stopbrorape, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6Democrats voted for the war too.
- bluesman3535, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7Maverick (disambiguation)--- Automobile [Ford 1970's] Maverick : Generally unreliable unattractive car, awkward in appearance, unbalanced in form and mechanically unsound.
- revjustin2, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6Wow. I have yet to hear ANYONE say that this whole mess is ONLY caused by subprime lending. Most analysis I have read cites many different factors in accordance with the subprime lending practices.
Why is it that people are so quick to blame the individuals who bought houses for all this? Did people make bad calls getting bad mortgages that they couldn't afford? Yes they did, but the borrowers only played a small role. The lenders were reckless and greedy and were taking huge risks. They were also responsible and I would say that sense they are the financial wizards, they knew damn well what they were doing. Joe Schmoe saw a way to get a house he couldn't otherwise afford. The bank set up the ponzi scheme.
Stop making excuses for the economic ruling class in this society. They would buy and sell you on the open market if they thought there was a buck in it. Then, when they were done, they'd sleep really well that same night, get up the next day and do it again. Repeat until all the wealth in the world is in the hands of as few people as possible. - UberNick, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7I agree with USArugula.
I haven't confirmed the auto-download executable is malware, but it looks super-suspect and has no reason to install itself (the video is supposed to be flash which means no codec required). Bury and block him please. - Fun4Two, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5If he fights a bear on TV I will definitely vote for him.
- magus_melchior, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5@LukasSmith: And we have eyewitnesses that say McCain could do little more than sit on his ass, while fellow Senators complained that he was in the way, and well over half the House REPUBLICANS voted against the bill. Please take your worshiping elsewhere.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6Luke buddy. If there was an article about a homeless guy rescuing a family of kittens in a flood you would manage to find something negative to say about Obama.
- diggstown, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5Sheeple is so Spring 2008, it's all about go-carts these days.
- Fun4Two, on 09/30/2008, -3/+8 I hope Sarah Palin does terribly during Thursdays debate, because if she doesn't, I would have to pay my roommate 80 bucks and two blu ray movies.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5So, why not just link to the AP article then?
Posting the HuffingPaint article instead of an article from a reliable source just shows bias.
It's like citing Wikipedia in an academic paper when the sources are listed on the Wikipedia page; linking to an unreliable tertiary source when you know where to find the real source is unacceptable. - diggstown, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Covering up stupidity with more stupidity is epic failure.
- mchristiansen, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5Time to jump the shark
- Uniadept, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4So, if it was a joke, I guess your whole post was a joke? Because there is no separation between your *joke* and the rest of the post.
- chrissku, on 09/30/2008, -4/+8Based on that picture of McCain it looks like someone just walked in the room and caught him whacking off. That startled look is priceless.
"My friends, this is not what it looks like. Just had my pants down to check for cancer spots. You just never know with these things." - tdclark23, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4The rule of thumb used to be spend no more than twenty percent of one's income on mortgage payments. I've know realtors who tell prospective home buyers to spend 30-50% on mortgage. Add to that banks offering loans to anyone who can breathe and sign their name. Add in our culture of big home equals big status and the environment is set for many to buy a much larger home than they can afford. The trouble starts after the adjustable rate kicks in and their payments balloon. Blaming the idiots who bought too much for the crisis is like blaming the heroine addict instead of the pusher. They share the blame, but it sounds a lot like entrapment. In America we are taught to expect that which is too good to be true.
The experts at the banks saw how to package those worthless mortgages to be bought and sold on Wall Street like they were valuable assets. - maz2331, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4One of the Republicans who voted "no" basically said that they were not going to be steam-rollered into voting for another thick bill they hadn't even had time to understand. Basically, it was a partial backlash against the way the PATRIOT Act was rammed through - and they aren't falling for the same trick twice.
- Conwaysb0718, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5now that right there is some real maverick *****. /harhar
- chrisgnv, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Because a lot of corporate bonds are mortgage-backed securities.
- Ageroth, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4I just want to point out that in the vote that killed the bail-out, republicans voted it down. not democrats.
Didn't they also ask her to step down? - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4y'know, i'd never thought of it like that? signs from god to accept the other party? after all, he sent pretty ***** confusing signals with that whole dinosaur fossil debacle. how could democrats be even more uprooting than that?
god, you crazy - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Malware! Suggest blocking "stivebanks" and reporting his post.
- newsheatdotcom, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Just basing it on past presidents, I'll have to guess stubbornness on this one.
- Gemfinder, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4Except for the one at the top, Stivebanks.
I'll kick an extra dollar into the kitty for him. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -2/+5HA! I originally read this as "Without Brain, McCain Reaches Dead End"
- gilgamesh23, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Love the deer in the headlights picture they have of McCain! It seems to say, "Oh look, there goes the presidency"
- Selch, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Some of us view Digg through feeds and don't see the front page. If you've already seen it, why are you here?
- newsheatdotcom, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3I'm getting sick of this comparison. Obama went to college and majored in something related to what his career is now. Just go look it up, school does make a difference when you are trying to make an educated decision (or statement even) on foreign affairs.
- jerrolds, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4via go-kart.
- ironhide, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4How did he accomplish more if he accomplished nothing? He went to get the bill passed. It failed. Ergo, he accomplished nothing.
- Zenham, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4I love that litle electoral vote widget at the bottom of the story. I clicked Nebraska, to find out that their vote history is 10% democratic vote, and 98% republican.
Someone's putting in 110%, but it looks like they also gave their 2 cents worth. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Non-cameral: See Smith, Lukas.
