- Bizdoggie, on 08/29/2008, -10/+106Love the photo and description of Wasilla, the "city" that Palin presided over as mayor.
- keishax, on 08/30/2008, -20/+106We all knew McCain had poor judgment, this just confirms it. A VP should not be a trophy and his choice is a dangerous choice for America.
- duckley, on 08/29/2008, -11/+97"After extensive news coverage about all this nasty behind-the-scenes scandal [TrooperGate], which is definitely NOT squeaky clean, Palin’s approval ratings fell to 67%, still high, but a far cry from the 90% number that’s being thrown around so glibly by the Republicans today. Alaskans are quickly becoming disillusioned once again."
- Jauladeoro, on 08/30/2008, -11/+92As an Obama supporter, my first reaction at McCain's VP pick was joy - Palin is nothing to sweat about and choosing her took their "no experience" argument right off the table.
My second emotion was anger. This is an insult to women to think we would vote for McCain simply because he picked a human being with genitalia that match our own - just completely idiotic. I couldn't care less what is in her pants --- And for her to stand up there and compliment Hillary Clinton who has worked her ass off for decades to put those "cracks in the glass ceiling" while she (Palin) has done NOTHING to deserve the VP slot is ridiculous, egotistical and insulting.
My third reaction is fear. Think about this people. McCain is old and has had several bouts with cancer. The possibility of him dying while in office if elected is pretty high. Palin is next in line. Palin - from a podink Alaskan town who doesn't even know what a VP does. That is truly scary. - Lynx55, on 08/30/2008, -19/+90"She is also sueing the federal government over listing the polar bears as a threatened species. "
Are you kidding me? First of all, a VP candidate suing the fed govt? And she hates polar bears so much she wants them to be extinct??
"She’s favored the ‘Trans Canada’ proposal that will run the pipeline through Canada, in effect shipping US jobs over the border. "
Now there is a popular sentiment...NOT! Michigan and Penn. voters ought to love that one!
"So choosing a woman because you think her gender will get votes is insulting."
YES YES YES....Does he think woman are so superficial as to not see through this?
Not to mention...PALIN IS NO HILLARY!
McMoron is still McMoron.
All I can say as a strong fearless Obama backer..THANK YOU McCain!!
OBAMA / BIDEN 08
The Intelligent Vote - Arishia, on 08/30/2008, -23/+90omg omg omg lmao this country is nothing but a joke, if anyone votes for McCain and Palin. We are DOOMED.
- JekJob, on 08/30/2008, -8/+63"Can you imagine her negotiating a nuclear non-proliferation treaty? Discussing foreign policy? Understanding non-Alaskan issues?"
Nope. - tcbishop12, on 08/30/2008, -11/+64As Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan noted earlier: (At what) point (will most) people suddenly realize that McCain is actually less interested in governing than in politics?
And willing to let personal liking and respect for utterly unqualified people trump the sober responsibilities of running a country at war, a climate in flux, an economy in trouble, and an empire close to imploding.
One more thing: this was a bit of a F-U pick, a personal, totally idiosyncratic, gut-level, aggressive piece of opportunism. - booksnmore4you, on 08/30/2008, -13/+49[snip]
Before her meteoric rise to political success as governor, just two short years ago Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla. I had a good chuckle at MSN.com’s claim that she had been the mayor of “Wasilla City”. It is not a city. Just Wasilla. Wasilla is the heart of the Alaska “Bible belt” and Sarah was raised amongst the tribe that believes creationism should be taught in our public schools, homosexuality is a sin, and life begins at conception. She’s a gun-toting, hang ‘em high conservative. Remember…this is where her approval ratings come from.
[/snip] - valimar77, on 08/30/2008, -10/+46An enlightening article. It does seem surreal.
- OSTIIA, on 08/30/2008, -8/+44Wasilla, Alaska combined with less than 2 years as state governor for around 670,000 people --- this is Sarah Palin's domain of political rise.
I actually stopped in Wasilla on my way up to Denali National Park a few years ago, and while it was a nice small town --- for all the awesome things Alaska is, it monumentally lacks any ability to deliver full scale, national, international, political (or otherwise) vision or experience to anyone. How can someone with such a limited background built from essentially small town life, and a very small state population even begin to deal with the myriad of issues facing this nation let alone our interactions with the world.
Obama was criticized for things like not going to the Middle East enough, etc. during the primaries and by John McCain. With the city council meetings, then running a city of around 6000 as mayor, and then successfully getting the votes of the majority of only 670,000 people to be governor for less than 2 years, while having 5 children and attending hockey games, hunting in the wilderness, and attending husband Todd's snowmobiling races, when has Sarah Palin even had a chance to get a view of the U.S. let alone travel outside of this country?? Truth is, she hasn't. She truly isn't qualified for the job --- not even close. And with decisions like this, clearly John McCain isn't either.
Are Americans so intent staying on this downward slope that they would actually show up and vote for this ticket... - seanmulkerne, on 04/23/2009, -16/+44Why didn't you just use the blogger's original title? It's a lot more effective.
- armstrongvk12, on 08/30/2008, -2/+28Looks like a wonderful town. Can't wait to see her debate Biden on foreign policy.
- nzahler, on 08/30/2008, -3/+28Because there are thousands of stories right now criticizing McCain and wondering if this is a rational decision. Everyone and their brother is writing one. Heck, I could write one. The reason this blog post is important and interesting is that it is both insightful and comes from someone who lives in Alaska. Does the original title have more zing? Sure. But it had nothing to do with why I chose to read this blog out of all stories out there today.
- Arishia, on 08/30/2008, -11/+32So seeing our governor out there in the national spotlight accepting the nomination for Vice Presidential candidate is just downright surreal. Just months ago, when rumors surfaced that she was on the long version of the short list, she was questioned if she’d be interested in the position. She said she couldn’t answer “until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here….”
- niradg, on 08/30/2008, -1/+22take a look at the city hall: http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Wasilla_Alaska_C ...
- Arishia, on 08/30/2008, -8/+28Well, if she does, let's hope that they don't have this picture of her first. eep
http://www.flickr.com/photos/arishia_nishi/2810486 ... - MindyB, on 08/30/2008, -6/+25Here is the most frightening prospect of this VP candidate: The primary job of the VP is to step in as President of the United States, should anything happen that would render the President unable to fulfill his/her duties.
Given McCain's advance age and history with malignant skin cancer (very likely to reoccur given his advance age), the chances of her taking the post of President are pretty high!
Can America afford to have a President who knows nothing about the national issues facing the nation. Someone who does't even know what Foreign Affairs is. Didn't even know what the VP's job is, and clearly has not read or understands our Constitution. Can America afford to have a President that her main claim to fame is Beauty Queen of a small Alaskan town?
Anybody who decides to vote for McCain/Palin clearly does not care anything about this country! - recalcitrantid, on 08/30/2008, -1/+18My god, if this bible-touting, gun-slinging republican, from Wasilla's 6000 were president, George Bush might look like a joke.
- marcovth, on 08/31/2008, -10/+26As a Creationist, where does Madam Palin thinks oil comes from?
- ssjaken, on 08/31/2008, -0/+14DAMN! my home town looks great on digg!
- feartheturtle, on 08/30/2008, -4/+17...Did you read the article?
- sugarazor, on 08/30/2008, -2/+15You mean the state of less than a million people that pay no sales or income taxes and has a ***** of oil that she wants to open up that will bring massive amounts of money to the state despite all that pesky environmental damage? Yeah, I can't imagine why her approval rating would be so high...
- Lindz2000, on 08/30/2008, -5/+17It's NOT ***** "*****" to put polar bears on the endangered list!
Plus I would like to see her sue the government for going to war illegally in Irak.
If she had an opinion, which she doesn't because she's been sooo busy dealing with Alaskan issues and running a village, as mayor, that she "hasn't focused much on Irak", it would no doubt reflect her radical, religious extremist beliefs. - bjornski, on 08/31/2008, -0/+11She's the Alaskan version of Michelle Bachmann.

"We don't need to worry about global warming! We don't need to save the Earth! Jesus already did that!" - FriedTurkey, on 08/31/2008, -2/+12My theory is that McCain is a Battlestar Galactica fan and because she looks like President Laura Roslin - she can do the job.
- SkittlesUSA, on 08/31/2008, -3/+13Oh yes Palin hates polar bears. Too bad they AREN'T ENDANGERED, the population has NEVER BEEN HIGHER... EVER.
http://www.skepticsglobalwarming.com/global-warmin ...
Polar bears shouldn't be on the endangered species list. - DizzQuixote, on 08/30/2008, -9/+19What an informative commentary on mccain's choice for vp. The "Maverick" has returned to form with a candidate out of far far far RIGHT field. To think that her bach. degree in media, her experience in being runner up as "Miss Alaska", her years of running a small town, where her hard work won the town "a bicycle helmet and cage", and her greatest aspirations as Gov. were for there to be free education from K - 12. Toss out science, all she needs is Creationism. Toss out the Constitution, she has her guns. Her foreign relations experience is watching the sun set over the Bering Straits and Russia. Wow!
As pointed out by another Alaskan, she's got an infant child, who has special needs. I can't see how any mother could possibly maintain a fulltime job that would demand countless trips abroad or at least away from the home. I am not very familiar with Down's Syndrome, but it appears that that child will need almost constant around the clock mothering. I would not even ask her to make that sacrifice. I wonder how mr. mccain could make such a choice. I think that this is just another feather in his cap. One that identifies him as a seriously misguided senior citizen. America cannot prosper or even survive if he were to attain the highest position of responsibility. I already heard his first uttering after Russia invaded Georgia. It was something real original! "We are all Georgians". Just what those Ruskies needed to hear. And then he sent the Joe and Lindsay team "Wormtongue and Dancing Queen" over there to investigate. To think that he'd have his hand on the nuclear trigger is a direct reminder that Kubrick was a visionary. Well, you can tear up that old script, cuz we gotta add a new character to the plot. A pistol packin' hot momma. Thanks for the laugh, john. If it's on me, it's also on America and it's future. - mingxhin, on 08/31/2008, -5/+14God save us the residents of the rest of the world if John "Bomb Iran" McCain and Sarah "Christian Right" Palin gets to run the most powerful empire in the world. China and Russia may be secretly hoping that Americans are that stupid to vote for the same old same old Bush Doctrine of the past 8 years. Another 4 years of the same ***** and USA is really on the express ticket down as the world's policeman. Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, China, Iran oh my...never-ending wars and evil empires for the brave and enlightened Yankees to vanquish!
- renegadeafk, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9are you honestly saying Obama is more similar to bush than McCain is?
Are you on crack? - geraldwhite, on 08/30/2008, -5/+12No wonder she has 5 kids.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+10That's true.
- MindyB, on 08/30/2008, -3/+10The news papers are filled with "about her" articles today!
Basically, here is about her:
Beauty Queen of small town
Bachelor's degree from so so University
2 term mayor of a town with the population of 5,500 (smaller than most neighborhoods in US)
18 months of governor of Alaska with the population of 670,000.(smaller population than most small US towns)
Staunch supporter and member of the NRA
Married with five children, one of which is a 4 month infant with Downs Syndrome (and where is mom when the baby needs mom the most?)
Embroiled in a controversy about abusing her power in attempting the firing of a State Trooper (ex-husband of Palin's sister).
Think of it this way: Given McCain's age and history with malignant skin cancer, it would be more likely than not for Palin to have to step in as President of the United States. Answer this, can America afford to have someone who has no knowledge of anywhere except Alaska, doesn't even know what foreign policy means, does not know our Constitution--given her question about "what does the VP do". Will destroy any progress made towards women's rights, and civil rights for all Americans. Will eliminate Roe vs Wade, and will eliminate all gun laws as she is a staunch member of the NRA. - 47f0, on 08/31/2008, -1/+8Not really. Eight of 43 presidents have died in office. In other words, it's about a one in five roll of the dice - and McCain would be the oldest president elected - and has had multiple cancer bouts. It's not a consideration to blow off lightly.
- DangerCollie, on 08/31/2008, -2/+9"I, and all Alaskans will be interested to see how this whole process unfolds. This is definitely a gamble for McCain, and in my humble opinion, a gift to Obama and to Joe Biden who just got thrown a big hunk of red meat for the vice presidential debate."
Told ya. And that's coming from an Alaskan. She's a great pick if you think creationism should be taught in school, that abortion should be illegal and homosexuals are somehow more evil than other people because of their sexual preference.
Personally, I'm glad to see those issues on the ballot in such clear terms. Let's have a national referendum on those topics. Evangelicals are less than 30% of the electorate, but they make a lot of noise for their numbers. So let's put those issues on the ballot and give the other 60+% a chance to voice their opinion. Evangelicals are tools for the Republicans. The reds had both side of the legislature and the White House and their big Pro Life initiative was Terri Shivo and a couple Supreme Court appointments. They could have done a lot more, but didn't want to make abortion illegal because they want to keep stringing the holy rollers along on abortion rights issues and they didn't want energize the other 60% of the populace.
And that, kids, is why religion should stay out of politics. - macdoodle, on 08/30/2008, -10/+16shes the governor of oil drilling, snow and ice
and she's not so interested in the snow and ice
bye bye polar bears too!
and don't worry bush and cheny will be there to guide her when mccain fails.
GOP SO ANTI AFFIRMATIVE ACTION - UNLESS THEY NEED A TOKEN TOKEN TOKEN! - thewdog, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6"There is no reason to vote for them" How are you possibly seeing that they are Bushco2.0 when his policies are contrasting of Bush, and Mccain voted with Bush 95% of the time? Huh? Obama outlined everything he will do to improve the economy and country, and it sounded a lot better than anything Mccain had said (although all he talks about is drilling and experience). I second renegadeafk, you must be on crack.
- AndrewDB, on 08/31/2008, -12/+18What is McCain thinking?
Simple Answer: He's not.
I think it'd be amusing as hell if Alaska voted Democratic this year. - akinapb, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6Cut the crap. Seriously. You're not fooling anyone; if you really believe in what you are saying then you are an idiot. Yes... Obama's whole political career stemmed from him voting "present" at the state senate, for 7 years mind you. Give me a break.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -3/+9can't wait to see that one flashed onto the screen during the republican convention's 'getting to know her' biommerical.
p.s.: fap fap fap - inactive, on 08/31/2008, -5/+11Take it way out of context why don't you? Everyone who sees that whole exchange can tell it was humor you *****.
- dan222555, on 08/31/2008, -9/+15Figures that she has a 90+% approval rating but the liberals will find the one guy who doesn't like her and paint him as the typical Alaskan.
- ParaSwarm, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5God, these rednecks are so blind.
- Gutterpunk, on 08/31/2008, -7/+12Yeah! When will people realize that in life, lack of experience and "street creds" are all you need to win?
Why, when I go to a doctor, I always try and pick one that has street smarts, not diploma to take care of me. I can rest at ease knowing that he is familiar with the reasons why I am sick because he lives in the same slum as I do unlike all those big city doctors on their big mansions!
Experience is overrated! - inactive, on 08/31/2008, -1/+6Didn't people use to joke that the reason nobody ever tried to assassinate the original George Bush is that he had Dan Quayle as a Vice President? Despite his political experience, Senator John McCain had this to say on Mr Quayle: "I can't believe a guy that handsome wouldn't have some impact." (src Wikipedia). Perhaps he is still lauding style over substance?
Phillip. - MrTulip, on 08/31/2008, -3/+8maybe regarding area. but if you look at the census data of 2000 you'll see that nearly 80% of the population of the u.s. live in urban areas:
Population living in Urban Areas 225,956,060 79.219%
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/census/cps2k.htm
(over 60% live in cities with a population of over 200.000)
and the trend goes towards urban areas so it's likely that the numbers have risen during the last 8 years in favor of bigger cities. - recalcitrantid, on 08/30/2008, -4/+9too bad its a sin to look at her
- davidpdx, on 08/31/2008, -9/+14Sara do no wrong huh? She's under investigation in Alaska for trying to have a her brother-in-law fired. Misuse of power, sounds like Dick Cheney.
- r0t8, on 08/31/2008, -3/+8that's so fake.
- Rudegar, on 08/31/2008, -5/+10like when people tell you not to think about a red hammer
