- chupavacas, on 09/02/2008, -25/+603I always think it's intersting that cops want cameras turned off when they start to arrest people. If the cops are acting lawfully then what are they afraid of? Isn't that the same argument we get when they install cameras in public places?
- revgerry, on 09/01/2008, -67/+511The police state is showing its ugly (fascist) hand by detaining a well respected journalist doing her job.
RNC at work. Maybe Amy was going to unveil some Republican corruption?? - drspanklebum, on 09/02/2008, -43/+341This is so disgusting it hurts inside
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -40/+310This is OUTRAGEOUS!
Amy Goodman is one of the most respected journalists working today. This is like arresting Dan Rather in his heyday while working on a 60 Minutes segment. This is Fascism! The Police no longer represent us or serve us. This illegal Police State action will not go unpunished. Even China during the Beijing Olympics did not dare to act this way. - filmlover44, on 09/02/2008, -31/+264What happened before this is that Amy Goodman probably committed the crime of reporting on something.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -17/+245They did this at the DNC too, sick.
They held innocent people for up to 38 hours with no charge, and had swat teams bust down doors to arrest people who were, get this, "conspiring to PROTEST". Jesus.... - phnx0221, on 09/02/2008, -20/+224It is being reported that Amy Goodman has been taken to the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center. You can contact them at: 651-266-9350.
The information coordinator for the Saint Paul Police, retired Sergeant Tom Walsh, denied in a press conference earlier today, that journalists and medics were arrested. They later confirmed that one journalist had been detained for criminal activity. You can contact Sgt Tom Walsh here: 651-266-5735
Medics, lawyers, journalists, independent media, and legal observers were all arrested en mass. Even after they let many people leave, coldsnap legal team and street medics, were still under arrest with their hands over their head. Prior to the mass arrests that had taken place, police had fired upon the protesters with propelled stun grenades and tear gas grenades. The protesters thought they were being shot at by some type of explosive, as they had never heard this type of sound before.
Journalists were ordered by riot police, not to enter the area where the protesters were marching, or in the area where the riot police were watching in formation.
The uptake has been reporting from there, even though they too, were detained for a while. More information, links, and live feeds can be found here: http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Violence_Breaks_ ... - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -5/+188Excellent point. Isn't that what the Fascists that want to take away our Liberties always say. "If your not doing anything wrong, then what are you afraid of?" But the Police never want to be taped or photographed. Well, "if they're not doing anything wrong..."
The fact is the Police don't want a video recording of the event, so that when they write up their report they can present their version of events without being challenged. - Mekhami, on 09/02/2008, -24/+196This doesn't show much, but it shows enough. Amy Goodman is an accredited journalist. From CNN.com:
And, despite the disruptions Monday, the security scheme is working as planned, Walsh said.
Security scheme indeed. - notque, on 09/02/2008, -33/+164Amy Goodman is an amazing journalist. Democracy Now! is the only news program in America with consistently intelligent and important news. This is an outrage.
- notque, on 09/02/2008, -9/+115Amy Goodman was just released. Journalists, Medics, Legal Observers, friends are still being held though. Keep calling.
- BigMommaLurka, on 09/02/2008, -14/+109This is beyond disgraceful. It is heartbreaking to know that there are millions of Americans out there that just don't understand that our Freedoms are under assault. They think the danger is "out there" somewhere. . .
WAKE UP AMERICA

Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! has been arrested in the Twin Cities. Click here to read the full Democracy Now! press release and see video coverage of Amy’s arrest. The full text of the press release is also published below.
Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman’s office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0). - mckringle, on 09/02/2008, -16/+103This is absolutely ridiculous. Clearly our constitutional freedoms are being severely compromised in this country. The Republicans will do anything they can to win another election, even if it discards the rights of the people it says this whole election is about. It's sick. And, yet, a lot of misguided Americans seem to shrug things like this off their collective shoulder . . .
- smashdracs, on 09/02/2008, -4/+83You hit the nail on the head with that comment.
- peacepower, on 09/02/2008, -2/+75The cops want to control the cameras. If something goes down in the process of an arrest or bust that can be used against YOU, they want that on film. If something goes down that makes them look culpable, such as unnecessary violence or roughness, then they don't want you to have that film. They don't want another Rodney King situation that costs their department big money and makes them look bad.
And, as you say, if they control the only video of the event, with a little skillful editing, who can challenge their official version of what happened. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -15/+87http://www.opednews.com/articles/Amy-Goodman-Arres ...
ST. PAUL, MN -- Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time.
Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfuly detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman's crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.
Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0).
Democracy Now! stands by Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and condemns this action by Twin Cities law enforcement as a clear violation of the freedom of the press and the First Amenmdent rights of these journalists.
During the demonstration in which they were arrested law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force. Several dozen others were also arrested during this action.
Amy Goodman is one of the most well-known and well-respected journalists in the United States. She has received journalism's top honors for her reporting and has a distinguished reputation of bravery and courage. The arrest of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar is a transparent attempt to intimidate journalists from the nation's leading independent news outlet. - iancgi, on 09/02/2008, -10/+80If we dont do something this time, next time they are just gonna push harder. This is not a joke people, this is not a drill. There is one reason and one reason only why a govt. enforces this type of behavior. Are we gonna let it happen in America?
- Minarchian, on 09/02/2008, -4/+68You guys it the truth here.
To prove what you're saying I give you this:
Denver Cops Brutally Beat Man and Lie About it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eIlr0UGcI0#
These "pigs" lied on the witness stand. The video proved they are the real criminals. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -15/+70***** fascists!
- mi2ca, on 09/02/2008, -8/+61I am really getting fed up with this kind of *****. This is not the United States of America I grew up in.
- kingUssop, on 09/02/2008, -7/+59Everyone getting arrested for "rioting" at these conventions seems to be a freaking reporter, or organizer. Some sick pig is getting off on the intimidation and must expect little media coverage right now.
- liberoarbitrio, on 09/02/2008, -8/+56When we arrest journalists that are out there trying to bring us the unfiltered truth, are we not arresting truth itself? How hypocritical of us to try to demean other countries for their suppression of freedoms when the very thing is happening in our own country.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -14/+59Police State, USA
- sheeplescareme, on 09/02/2008, -8/+50at the rally and many people are calling and waiting for the rest to be released. i'm sure i'll have my lap-top confiscated soon! ironic that she's a journalist for democracy now...
- VitriolAndAngst, on 09/02/2008, -5/+47How do people protest when everything but being stuck in a hidden "freedom zone" is banned?
Amy Goodman is a member of the press and is not attacking anyone -- so how can she just be arrested? Just because they've made it legal by presidential decree doesn't mean this subversion of political speech is constitutional.
We are not going to get out of the push for fascism with this election in November I'm afraid. And if they manage to start a war in Iran -- it will probably be martial law in the States. - notque, on 09/02/2008, -3/+45Videos from today taken by someone from Indymedia there.
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Videos_from_rnc_ ... - bicyclepaladin, on 09/02/2008, -21/+61Wow. Just, wow.
- swrostmore, on 09/02/2008, -2/+39The real telling statistic will be how many convictions result. At the 2004, where over 1500 were arrested and detained, the number of convictions was in the single digits.
This is the standard RNC tactic for supressing protests around their convention, just sweep everyone up, hold them for the maximum amount of time without charge, and then release them. "Sorry buddy, our mistake." - elshizzo, on 09/02/2008, -24/+61Because she's a little old lady and one of the most respected journalists in this country. What did you think she was doing, throwing molotovs?
- whiteguysamurai, on 09/02/2008, -15/+52This is why digg is so important, people are waking up.
.....And it scares them. - notque, on 09/02/2008, -2/+39According to Ramsey County officials, 163 people have been arrested in the city of St. Paul http://tinyurl.com/5t9q4l
- debunkthelies, on 09/02/2008, -13/+49It's the FBI and Homeland Security that are behind these arrests, they want to intimidate the people into submission.
- pdurod, on 09/02/2008, -15/+50thuggery. I haven't voted for a Republican since 1984. I was young and misinformed.
- dagnome1984, on 09/02/2008, -2/+35This is why it's so important to stream your video content to a server in case the police steal your camera.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -5/+38UPDATE: Goodman was arrested along with Democracy Now producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. As of 9:15 PM EST, the Ramsey County jail has charged Goodman with "conspiracy to riot" and released her, but is still detaining Kouddous and Salazar. No charges have been pressed against them.

- ChuckDees, on 09/02/2008, -3/+32Well you know what they'll be talking about on Democracy Now tomorrow.
- notque, on 09/02/2008, -2/+31Court hearing for those arrested today will be tomorrow @ 8am @ Ramsey Cty Courthouse, 15 West Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN
Authorities said of those arrested today, 73 were charged with felonies, 42 with gross misdemeanors, and 48 with misdemeanors. - dcmjzero, on 09/02/2008, -11/+38Just because you she's not on Fox News - and therefore YOU don't recognize her - does not mean she is not a well-known and respected journalist. And how someone looks should have no bearing how they report the news (unlike Fox News' policies). Your need to add insults just shows your immaturity.
- sirealestate, on 09/02/2008, -12/+39This is outrageous ...Amy is an excellent reporter...Too bad she does not have a 3 hour radio show and another prime time TV spot like some of those other fools spreading hate and lies
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+28That is VERY good news. Do you have a link? How was she able to get released so quickly? Are the charges dropped?
- notque, on 09/02/2008, -6/+33Alex Jones is absolute crap, but let's not quarrel about it today. We can have a discussion on it some other time. Too much to be done now.
- notque, on 09/02/2008, -1/+25One of the legal teams there twittered the information to me. Very reliable. That's all I know.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -2/+26Remember the ABC producer that was arrested at Denver? If the reporter at that shoot had stepped in to defend him he would have been arrested too. That's what happened to Amy Goodman. She tried to defend someone that was arrested and in turn was arrested herself.
- AK10, on 09/02/2008, -5/+29I am a fan of her show and about as supportive of the protesters as it gets. I'd like to see video from more than 5 seconds before the arrest as well. Not that it would legitimize the unconscionable actions of the police in St. Paul, but I'd like to see the situation that led up to this myself.
Digg me down if you think this is too much to ask! - HonestAbe, on 09/02/2008, -1/+24It should be a legally-protected right to record public employees when they are on-duty. They are our employees, and employers are currently allowed to monitor their employees even with hidden cameras. We should be allowed to film our employees too.
