- greenerthan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+85let's guess whose building this thing...halliburton?
- AlphaEta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+74So basically they're using tax dollars to build a modern day castle that will constantly be under siege and will most likely be abandoned in short order?
What a crock of *****! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+71The average American works 3 hours and 43 minutes a day to pay his or her taxes and the elite are rewarded with a secure palace in Iraq?
- drouk1556, on 10/11/2007, -2/+59Something tells me this might not be the best idea we've ever had.
- obliviousfool, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40For greenerthan, according to USA Today, "The lead contractor on the embassy project is a Kuwaiti firm, First Kuwaiti Trading & Contracting, Higgins said. There are also five U.S. subcontractors, but he would not name them for security reasons." http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=35236 Here's a good article. The Kuwaiti firm uses really cheap Asian labor, and observes no US labor laws. Halliburton, according to some, may be doing logistics support for the embassy building. This is all overshadowed by the fact that most people in America have no knowledge of this large project.
- jerryparid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32Full of *****; especially the GDP part.
Saudi Arabia (2x+), Turkey (2x+), Iran (1.5x+) all have GPD much greater than that of Israel.
Israel won't survive a day in the world without US military aid and support. - Flestrin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29Good lord. We send them 7 million A DAY. And we pay all the other surrounding countries not to bother them.
Is this the best they can do?? - robbh66, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Next time you post here
please make some sort of a point
pointless comments fail
Haiku - Fascist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27How much do you want to bet that it'll be bombed within the first week of operation?
- spoiled1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27New CIA Mid-East head quarter.

"The average American works 3 hours and 43 minutes a day to pay his or her taxes and the elite are rewarded with a secure palace in Iraq?"
Sorry to break this to you but the elite don't exactly surround themselves with danger.
This is for the average State Department official who is unlucky enough to be sent to Iraq and has to spend 3 hours and 43 minutes a day just to pay their taxes. - aschocobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25@obliviousfool:
"This is all overshadowed by the fact that most people in America have no knowledge of this large project."
they didn't bother mentioning this little tidbit, probably because there was no way to spin it so that the majority of the American people wouldn't be dead set against it. in any case, it's just more proof that bush *never* intended that we leave iraq...or is it better i say 'a-wreck', since that's pretty much what the country is now, thanks to our so-called "freedom fighting" exploits? - Aeaus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Holy Scrolly!
- therealrico, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Ugggg this ***** administration makes me SICK, we will probably have to evacuate it once we withdraw the troops. 592 million for what?
- waterboy1628, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22That cost doesn't even include the moat.
- bishsd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23$592 Million to build
1000 people to staff it
3000 people to secure it
$1 Billion per year to operate
Bigger than the effin' Vatican!!
It's an embassy. The US Embassies I've been familiar with in other countries take care of pleasantries like issueing visas, replacing stolen passports and helping drunk American's get out of European and Mexican jails. How many passports in Baghdad are we planning on stamping?!
And before you start on me, I know I'm referring more to consulates than embassies. It's called sarcasm. - raabco, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Cue the ***** insane bush apologists.
/yes, I know I was being redundant - vinwal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19It just proves that we will permanently occupy Iraq, as long as there is oil anyway. I feel sorry for the Iraqi people.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Why do I get the strange feeling that this thing will be bombed to rubble 20 years from now..by the United States. Read up on the history of Saddam Hussein and you will see what I mean. Humans will never learn...
- treelovinhippie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17... and thus confirms that war=money and that they intend to drag this war on for at least another decade.
- Satanael, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19We're too lazy... It's sad.
- MeanGeno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Question. Why the hell are we building an embassy there? Weren't we suppose to go to Iraq to find the "weapons of mass destruction"?
Now we are building and embassy. What's next. Hotel Resorts? Seriously, this government doesn't surprise me anymore. The Bush admin has set this country like 10 years back. - jerryparid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Oh yea; things are cheaper in Iraq than in the United States.
Hell yea; this embassy cost more than the budget for US 2008 forest service. I pity those poor park rangers. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Yeah, and nearly every Israeli I ever met has a chip on his shoulder. Kind of rankles that I am forced to pay my tax money only to have it be given to arrogant IDF ***** so they can kill children. Since when is it my Constitutional duty to pay for an apartheid country?
- Satanael, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17You know, Mike, I sometimes wonder how this country could be as bad as it is... And then people like you show up and say what's on their mind... Thanks for making this place even worse.
- diggcensors, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15we really should put more money into the national parks... it really is unfortunate
- catbeller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15What the hell does al Queda have to do with it? the Iraqs are blowing us up. bin Laden is in Pakistan. Stop conflating Iraqis killing their invaders to Al Queda blowing up skyscrapers in New York.
We are the bad guys; Iraqis are the good guys; al Queda is irrelevant to what is happening. They hate our guts because we killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, turned their country, formerly wealthy, into hell for the last 15 years, and stole their damned wealth and gave it to the big four oil conglomerates. What is so hard to comprehend about this very simple situation? They want us, at the very least, to get the ***** off their land. Then, they want our hands off their oil pumps. Then, we are welcome to go to hell.
What would YOU be doing if someone did that to your country? Throwing rose petals on the ground before their tank treads? - bluechips23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15And, we don't have the money to pay for gas, medical bills and tuition.
- danarama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12One half billion bollar reason they invaded, to establish a permanent and powerful presence. Over throw a dictator, WMD, terrorism?
- Wonkanobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Go my tax dollars!
- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14mike17032,
You're a pathetic specimen, eh? The ol' Internet Tough Guy. What a joke.
You shouldn't be speaking of traitors. You don't seem to know what one is. The Founding Fathers did. Read up on it some time. - catbeller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I keep seeing this "we aren't staying" phrase. Read about the fortress. It has fast food restaurants inside. It's an American space colony. The outer walls are designed to shrug off shots from tanks and bombs. The neocons did not design this thing so that we would give it over to the Iraqis. It's designed for Americans only. At no time did they intend to invade Iraq and take the oil, and then just leave. You don't build Death Stars in order to hand them over. This is the imperial command center of the US in the Middle East.
- AlphaEta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Unfortunately, the civil war has already begun.
Also, if the insurgents were able to bomb the parliament building in Baghdad, I don't think any structure in Iraq will ever be considered secure. - laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13At no point in America's history has this country been brought so low.
The extent to which Bush has betrayed America puts him in the same league as Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Putin, Hitler, Hiro Hito and Reagan. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12geez, its just going to get bombed as soon as security goes down.
i'd build the thing outta plywood and tin foil. - atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11More like strategic command center to control the middle east. I read a book, written way before the war was even discussed, about a year before the war began and one line haunts me to this day, "Whoever controls Iraq controls the middle east." Iraq is just the beginning folks :(
- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11A more fitting symbol of America's investment in Iraq would be a graveyard abutting a country club.
- PhantomBantam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Yeah, I doubt "the elite" would ever want to go to Iraq. They might get paid a ton of money building embassies in Iraq.
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Now that you know the truth, feel enlightened, proud free...and keep paying those taxes. Remember, your approval is never necessary. If it was, embassies like this never would have been built. The fact is, this is not done to gain public approval. Elite in power doesn't give a damn about approval. All they need is funds and labor. And don't don't even think of resisting. Your same taxes pay for the suppressive force that keeps you in check. Turn your back to the government and you'll be getting whipped. That whip you're feeling with your bare back - it was built by you, and the very lack of dis-concern. The lack of involvement is what gave approval to the situation you are in right now, as a citizen. By not saying "no", by remaining silent, you said "yes".
Like I said. Wake up, enlighten yourself for the day, then go back to bed. Your freedom's been lost so long ago, you probably don't even remember what it looks like. You read about it in a book, but never had a chance to examine it first hand... maybe, cause it doesn't exists at all. Maybe the only way to truly be free is in your mind. Maybe... just maybe, ignorance is bliss... bliss indeed. - Fhionnlaoch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I think there was a mis-print, it should read "gubernatorial palace" rather than "embassy."
- gab00n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9We'll be in Iraq for decades.
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Hey Israel, here's a ***** cookie. Keep up the good work.
SARGASM. - laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Because we've spent too much time being halfway-decent human beings while our government has plotted against us in the shadows.
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8And I think Ron Paul said that the US is building something like 14 permanent military bases. It doesn't sound the war will ever be over. Even if we pulled out, either we have to leave troops to defend all these bases or abandon them. The a fricking mess over there.
- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Not before someone gets rich on the contract to build it.
- siszam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Americans still don't have universal health care but the billions spent in Iraq keep adding up like the bodies do. Disgusting.
- mikemil828, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7To be technical it's really أسامة بن محمد بن عوض بن لادن but that of course would be about as nitpicky as your apparent complaint about how I spelled his name. At least the biggest benefit is that terrorists would probably prefer to blow this fortress up instead of taking the pains of actually hitting something in America
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Wow those are pretty nice, It's nice to see that $592,000,000 and 3,000 American lives is finally showing it's worth.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's also going to be the most expensive building destroyed by civil war.
- kineticarl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I hope this isn't new news to many diggers. This "embassy" has been under construction for a long time. It's no secret, and for some reason no large segment of our population is outraged over it.
Anyway, what's half a billion out of the 500 billion we're spending there? YOU come up with a better way to spend that money. /sarcasm -
