- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -31/+130Glenn Beck isn't really one of the "giant *****" guys. He's conservative but he acts like he would be fun to hang out with and actually seems to have more of a sense of humor than most political "comedians."
The whole "this person should be fired because they say things worse than Imus" is supposed to illustrate how silly it was to fire Imus, not seriously advocate people losing their jobs.
I see Imus being fired a lot like Bobby Knight being fired. Neither were doing too well right before getting canned, and their actions were more of an excuse to let them go than a provocation for dismissal. The problem is that their employers try to sell an excuse that doesn't fly. Why fire Bobby Knight for grabbing a student's arm when he had thrown chairs and head-butted kids in the past? Why fire Imus for a silly remark when he and many others have said far worse in the past? It's an excuse to make unpopular corporate decisions. - Dewhead, on 10/12/2007, -74/+136Please. Glenn Beck hasn't said anything racist. You want him fired because you don't like his politics.
- KingJarmo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+58Racism is everywhere, once you start giving up your freedom of speech you can kiss everything else goodbye. Not all of us african-americans believe in what Sharpton or Jackson does.
- Dewhead, on 10/12/2007, -17/+55Show me a quote that you think is racist. Being critical of someone's religion is NOT racist. People do it all of the time. Did you think it was also bigoted that some people questioned Bush's ability to serve his country based on his faith? I am a Christain and I didn't. People have a right to know how a person's beliefs will influence how they will lead.
Racism would be questioning whether someone could serve their country because of their skin color since skin is about as relevant in terms of character and intelligence as hair color is. But a belief system is the most relevant indicator of how a person will lead.
People who are pro-choice were concerned about how Bush's presidency would affect this issue since he is pro-life. That is completely understandable and natural. So why woul'tdn it be understandable and natural for someone to question Ellison on his muslim beliefs? What if he believes that the US should be under sharia law? We are at war with Islamic terrorism and to ask questions is not biased. When we become so PC that we cannot even criticize a religion or a belief system then we are all doomed. - fsjonsey, on 10/12/2007, -11/+47@blackolive
I see that you are getting your information from a blog that uses misquotes and statements taken out of context to try to discredit Glenn and other media figures they don't agree with. How very informed you must be.
These are the same quotes you got from Mediamatters, in their original context.
From the September 9, 2005 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program:
"And when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, "Oh shut up!" I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining. And we did our best for them. And, again, it's only about 10.
But the second thought I had when I saw these people and they had to shut down the Astrodome and lock it down, I thought: I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims. These guys -- you know it's really sad. We're not hearing anything about Mississippi. We're not hearing anything about Alabama. We're hearing about the victims in New Orleans. This is a 90,000-square-mile disaster site, New Orleans is 181 square miles. A hundred and -- 0.2 percent of the disaster area is New Orleans! And that's all we're hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we're seeing on television are the scumbags -- and again, it's not all the people in New Orleans. Most of the people in New Orleans got out! It's just a small percentage of those who were left in New Orleans, or who decided to stay in New Orleans, and they're getting all the attention. It's exactly like the 9-11 victims' families. There's about 10 of them that are spoiling it for everybody." - DiggerXtreme, on 10/12/2007, -24/+53Let's all jump on the Al Sharpton bandwagon until all speech is stifled!
Could it be that Frankin is jealous that Beck gets higher ratings than Air America, the network that once ran a spot about killing Bush, ever did? - Dewhead, on 10/12/2007, -16/+45Since when can't we question the motives of politicians? People on the left question whether Bush's religion influences his policy making so why can't people question whether or not Ellison's faith influences his???? Why the double standard?
- hgb5150, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33Can we fire the people at Digg who allow blogspam like this on the front page?
- Anachronus, on 10/12/2007, -21/+42Ah yes...Al Franken was such a success on the radio. Surely his is an expert opinion.
- aikimann, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31Look I live in Durham, NC and listen to Glenn Beck regularly, and all this ***** is taken out of context. People on the left want to kill talk radio because they want to shut up people with opposing viewpoints, namely the right. Just because Air America is floundering doesn't mean they have to take everyone else down with them.
FYI, I also listen to Randy Rhodes, Ed Schultz, Neal Boortz, Rush Limbaugh, and this other air america type show I can't remember the name of. The left and the right have their opinions, and god dammit, let them have them! Don't like it? Don't listen to it! - Mosatii, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24@Blackolive
If you're going to quote him, quote the full thing. Or does that make him sound not so evil to you and you can't accept that?
[EDIT: Damn it, beaten to it] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Johnny...Digg users are not powerful at all. If you think that ANYONE outside of Digg gives one flying ***** about Digg userrs, you are sadly, sadly delusional. No company has ever given any thought to what people on Digg say before making a decision.
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23"The whole "this person should be fired because they say things worse than Imus" is supposed to illustrate how silly it was to fire Imus, not seriously advocate people losing their jobs."
In reading these comments, I think you're the only one that understood the point of that comment. Too many literal minded people around here! - dignation, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Truthfully, i enjoy watching glenn beck, there is something about his character that draws you in. As for nancy grace though...
- fsjonsey, on 10/24/2007, -8/+24I'm quite astonished, pleasantly so, that people here are actually defending Glenn Beck here. People should listen to his show before judging him. Glenn has been one of the only people to give moderate/ reform minded Muslims like Irshad Manji a voice in the media, which has, for a long time, been a mouthpiece for CAIR and Muslim Brotherhood shills. What he asked Ellison needed to be asked, while he may not have done it in the best way possible. All Politicians need to be questioned whether or not their religious beliefs will impact their policy decisions, not just fundamentalist Christians.
- fatesdefiance, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22The proper response to Imus should have been: With a nasty mop like that on your head, you have no business commenting on our hair."
People are sadly thin-skinned these days. Imus made a tasteless remark--which is pretty much what people in that position do. There's no need for people to throw pity parties over those "poor girls"--it's readily apparent how off-base his remarks were.
The whole brouhaha was needless.
Regarding Franken--the political motivation behind his comment is horribly obvious. Silencing legitimate political opinions because you disagree with them is un-American. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/23/2007, -13/+28Free speech does not mean you can say whatever you want and no one can fire you or sue you for it. It simply means you can say whatever you want without getting thrown in jail or fined by the government. If your bosses don't like what you are saying or what you are saying scares away advertisers then the bosses have every right to fire you.
- fsjonsey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Remember people. Conservatives aren't allowed to be funny.
- catfud, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25I throught that was funny
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14We shouldn't "ban" rap music. It would be against freedom of speech. Instead we should educate kids that the types of personalitys involved in gangsta rap are not to be emulated. Kids need better role models then the ones they have today.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Tim...You should be commended for a thoughtful post. However, in my experience Digg is not about thoughtful posts. On the political side it is war--flaming, name calling, burying (by some), blocking, insulting, and taunting (to name a few). I encourage you to keep posting your thoughts despite the battles you might see.
- buhatkj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19franken is a tool. he's just pissed because there wasnt a market for his retarded brand of talk radio, and he flushed a bunch of time down the toilet trying to make it work. glenn beck rocks.
- alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+23I can't stand Rush, or Hannity... they spew talking points and half-truths. Beck is the only political talk-radio I listen to now... he thinks critically about (most issues) but I disagree on some of his conclusions that are influenced by his (LDS) faith. The only other radio I listen to is NPR, which I enjoy but is so biased it's farther left than Air America. Speaking of Air America, Al Frankin has to be the biggest douchebag on the airwaves today. He's jealous that Beck can get ratings and he can't. Have you ever listen to Frankin's Show? He's very, very, dumb. That's why his ratings are bad... he's dumb and has nothing interesting to say.
Stop demanding people get blacklisted from the airwaves, you McCarthyite fascist idiots. - fsjonsey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@Mihan77
actually, displaying that flag is his first amendment right. - KatieBee, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21its called freedom of speech? perhaps some of you have heard of it? if i dont like what the rap songs are saying, i turn the station, if i dont like what al franken says, i turn off cnn, if i dont like what glenn beck says, i turn off the radio station. there is power there. dont buy what they are selling. but defend their right to sell it.
- rasputinaxp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@appetite:
Bill Cosby? He's very conservative. He's been pilloried by the black media for insisting that parenting begins at home, that young black men need education and that they need to be taught respect and self-respect in order for any actual advancement to happen.
Poor guy gets slammed for speaking the truth. - KyleGoetz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17While I don't agree with much of what Glenn Beck says, he's a ***** cool guy. He defends what he says fairly well, and is quite articulate. He, like Lou Dobbs, is attacked by the left (who are supposed to LOVE free speech) for having opposing viewpoints.
Guys, when you try and shut these guys up, you make your entire political philosophy look retarded. When you represent any group of Americans, yet want to remove freedom of speech on the airwaves, you look hypocritical. If Al Franken said this and really meant it, he's a partisan hack. However, if he said it as satire, then he's damn smart, and has a great point.
Glenn Beck is a good representative for the right wing. He defends what he says, doesn't cut disagreers off, and (my favorite part)
HE IS INCREDIBLY POLITE TO EVERYONE WHO COMES ON HIS SHOW, EVEN IF THEY ARE LEFT WINGERS. You can't say that about too many talk radio/TV personalities these days. It shows character. - benman1455, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Like Michael Savage says, "LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER".
- 4thandSchlong, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Are most of the people that read Digg mental retards when it comes to politics? "Yeah, Al Franken is God!!!"... what a bunch of tards. Go form your own opinions for a change and leave politics to the smart people.
- Ninja337, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17None of the main stream Conservative news personalities are racists, you are all just giant liberal tools.
- catfud, on 10/12/2007, -29/+39Al Franken is a fool
he acts all high and mighty and clearly from this video clip he is anti-free speech
if the KKK is covered under free speech why cant Imus make a joke and why cant glen beck ask an arab if he is a terrorist
i mean come on - BrutusCato, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Al Franken can play hide and go ***** himself for all I care. He's just jealous his tasteless and boring program got sacked.
- appetite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Imus brought CBS radio $25 million per year. He made MSNBC $4.5 million. His telethon, which came in the midst of this ordeal, was doing better than it ever had in years prior before CBS yanked it. I don't think this was a bottom line sort of thing. Just a stupid P.C. nightmare.
- craka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10-owloo4o-
"Where do I say I want to silence Beck? What exactly did I "distort" by describing his technique? I actually enjoy watching him, though I very much despise what he does. He's quite a master at his art. Just trying to help people here to know just what that art is".
you are describing his technique through your world view, one in which all conservatives are evil. Your opinion of a conservative can only be distorted because you are a ideologue. Also, you are posting a thread against Glen Beck in a article that is advocating the firing of Glen Beck for his speech. I was just putting two and two together. - craka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why can't you just say you don't agree with him, and choose not to watch instead of trying to "smear and distort" things he has said. You are not a very good advocate for free speech sir or mam.
- craka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12you might be on to something.
- craka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Most people on this site are either hard-core Socialist or Communist.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14What site do you think you are on? This is Digg. OF COURSE the political websites submitted are pinko-socialist websites.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/23/2007, -4/+13No I DO have the right to demand they be taken off the air. That's what freedom of speech is. It's the people in charge's choice if they want to listen to me or not.
- jfowler27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@jonnymj
Anyone has the right to demand something, including having something taken off the air. That does not mean anyone has an obligation to listen to or follow those demands. - ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If people were fired every time someone disagreed with them we would no longer have radio, t.v. or newspapers. I don't agree with what Imus said so he was fired. I don't agree with what Al Franken said on Larry King so let's fire Larry. Come on people, this is bordering on communist control. Take a look at what Putin is doing in Russia, do you really want that in our country. People here on Digg fell high and mighty with their thoughts and opinions but if we start going down this road you won't be able to air your opinion unless it is pre-approved. Give me liberty or give me death, and crap like this is killing my spirit.
- rjccourt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So this is how free speech dies. George Orwell would be proud of how the PC police have created an organization that isn't even part of the government, but gets to control what we say, see, hear and think. Remember what they used to say back in the old USSR, there's no truth in the news (Izvestia) and no news in the truth (Pravda).
- alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"...If someone says Rosie O'donnell is a fat bitch, after careful consideration, I can't see any evidence to the contrary..."
/Hahaha!!!! - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14please don't equate the people who wanted imus fired with liberals. i saw a poll that said 70% of people thought imus shouldn't have been fired.
i'm liberal and the whole thing pissed me off the no end. if you keep saying liberals wanted this, then i'll just say conservatives like the way the war is being run. how would you like that? - mrgarza, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I agree Al franken sucks
- netmugger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Hey AL - how is your show doing on airhead america radio network?
oh yeah it SUCKS! and is BANKRUPT - alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Oh my god, I came here expecting this thread to be overrun with fascist political correctness advocates agreeing with the headline and Frankin. Thankfully, there are thinking liberals, thinking moderates, and thinking conservatives digging up the common sense and burying the right/left drivel.
Any of us should be able to agree on issues like supporting freedom of speech and fighting against blacklisting, regardless of our political bent.
Me? I'm a conservative with a libertarian bent who hates the ***** out of Republicans and Democrats and their special interests, and the way they manipulate the vast mass of morons with religion, race, class, and fear. - craka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11He's not the only one that thinks that.
- kazoolist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@BloggerRadio
"Attorney General John Ashcroft" huh? Looks like your hate-rant needs updating... - gojeda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The irony of Franken wanting people fired for saying, in his book, idiotic things.
