- mbelleghem, on 10/10/2007, -29/+172Amazing how much talk there is here on Digg about the sorry state of affairs in the US at present. One can only hope that activities such as this will turn anger into action. They way it looks from here, it *will* take concerted action by the masses to change the handbasket-to-hell course of American democracy, as clearly those elected to Congress last year aren't up to the task. It's just a matter of when that critical mass is achieved. The sooner you folks take your country back, the sooner you can get back to being the Americans the rest of the world knew and loved.
- notque, on 10/10/2007, -22/+112http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_strike
A general strike is a strike action by a critical mass of the labour force in a city, region or country. While a general strike can be initiated based on political goals, economic goals, or both, it tends to gain its momentum from the ideological or class sympathies of the participants. It is also characterized by participation of workers in a multitude of workplaces, and tends to involve entire communities. The general strike has waxed and waned in popularity since the mid-19th century, and has characterized many historically important strikes. - GlobalistShill, on 10/10/2007, -34/+117I've already secured my day off. Who else is with me?
- wholly2b, on 10/10/2007, -17/+86I am! Except I'm not asking for the day off; I'm just not showing up.
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/10/2007, -18/+77This is going to work as well as the don't pump gas on May 18th thing.
- wholly2b, on 10/10/2007, -23/+82This is beautiful, this is inspiring, this is possible and this is happening. Seriously. If you're fed up, if you're angry, if you've had enough, then just stay home on September 11th. The government has been exploiting this date for years and now it's our turn. This is all it takes -- if we make a big splash then the ball will be rolling, the snowball growing. WE HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE CHANGE.
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -21/+78A popular strike will make people realise that they are not alone in being disillusioned about how things in America are developing. It won't explain what specifically needs to be done, but it will at least draw a line in the sand to send a message of, "Enough is enough. Something needs to be done to change the direction we are moving in." It will also show that the 'movement for change' has wide spread support. Change comes from the individual but the platform from which they are launched is a populous one.
The greater the turnout; the greater the impetus for change. - wholly2b, on 10/10/2007, -23/+61Whomever made this site: WOW! It's great! Like, wow! The fliers are AWESOME. I'm going to print some out and plaster my neighborhood. Any Upper West Side Manhattanites want to help?
- quakeIII, on 10/10/2007, -50/+84I'm going to work 2 or 3 times harder on that day to make up for the people on strike. Anyone with me?
- umbriago, on 10/10/2007, -11/+43Looks like The Revolution has hit its first roadblock: bandwidth.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -16/+46Some of you guys might call BS ...but is it better to just sit on your ass?
BTW for those of you have never attended a political rally - of any stripe - getting together with like minded people is REALLy life affirming and guess what? You find out that all the "community" and "family values" are there and available -- just not in the ***** guise we have been sold.
Power to the people; own your government and you will own yourself. - gavin422, on 10/10/2007, -16/+46I predict this will be approximately as effective as the 25 "gas strikes" that the internet has tried to manufacture over the last 3 years.
- loaff, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32This comment is ***** laughable. America is probably the most overworked developed nation in the world. It's not like in Europe where some governments mandate that everyone have five weeks off plus national holidays. Absolutely unfounded and ridiculous comment.
- theghoul, on 10/10/2007, -20/+50...And this will solve what?
Whatever you don't do or buy 9/11 you will on 9/12 - Trevor, on 10/10/2007, -35/+64Certainly, this will be the step, taken by concerned 9/11 truthers that finally causes the US Govt. to admit that "they did it". And by "they" I mean "they" and by "did it" I mean "blew up the WTC".
And by "concerned 9/11 truthers" I mean "impossible-conspiracy-minded, willfully ignorant morons". - brycelb, on 10/10/2007, -38/+65I don't care what the issue is, but when you include truthers in the mix, 99.99999% of the public are going to decline.
- Ghoztt, on 10/10/2007, -18/+45I'm in!! Peaceful civil disobedience for change!!!
- maybeinoregon, on 10/10/2007, -13/+39The greatest 'strike' that we can do here, is get off our asses and vote. And the next time some dumb ass starts talking about WMD - do some research - and find out what it is, BEFORE you agree with the idiot. While your at it, find out what type of technology it takes to deliver such a weapon - because most of the world doesn't have it.
I went into the service because I was proud to be an American, and I was proud to serve my Country - but we have become a nation of ignorant people that buys into whatever we are told -
Like I said, don't buy into whatever they are selling - educate yourself, then educate your neighbor - then and only then, will the lies have no meaning.
Lets take America back. - cusoman, on 10/10/2007, -9/+34Doesn't requesting a day off kind of go against the point of this?
- treed, on 10/10/2007, -29/+51Sorry, the presence of truthers invalidates any possibility of my participation.
- Vapor17, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25dugg for possibly unintentional Seinfeld reference
- sanman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24No sex either?? Whaddya mean no sex either?
Let's not take this too far - wholly2b, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24And even if it was, we gotta get the word out. Dugg.
- hoax689, on 10/10/2007, -19/+38this is great exactly what needs to be done
- inhaler, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26This must be how Rome felt during the last few evenings of their empire.
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Even if it were I'd gladly see it every week till the event. In the past men have fought and died for what the Republic represented. The sacrifice of reading the same two lines on the front page of Digg a few weeks in a row for the sake of the ideals laid out in that Republic doesn't compare.
- gwhardyiv, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Not really. It might encourage your boss to shut down operations for the day. You aren't trying to piss off your superiors here. It's not a stunt. It's the simplest act of political protest.
- erkokite, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23This server is on general strike
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -37/+54So basically, it's a strike about nothing?
- Toshibi, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22How is it oppression when you agree to work for a certain wage or certain hours? Have you ever held a job? Agreeing to do something, having the ability to agree on something and not having it forced down your throat is freedom. His "Capitalist Oppressor" has every right to ***** can his ass for not showing up for work since his absence without being responsible and adult could very well hurt the company or put more work on other people. How is that fair or right?
Can't wait to get dugg down. - PolishNInja, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20I'm sure the current state of the federal government is the first thing that will pop into your boss's head.
- nedzeve, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Actually, we take 2 weeks a year, unlike you Euros who take 2 months.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+26it's true, everyone but the truthers sees them as completely insane (they are) and they hurt any cause they get behind but they're too caught up in pretending to be smarter than the general public to notice or care.
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21There are more negative comments through the thread but they're all buried and the digg score is sky rocketing up. There is far more in favour than this than not! Take the day off, get your friends to take the day off and either join a peaceful protest or organize a public party.
- Freonce, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17I think it more about the message sent. If people still at work see 15% of the staff gone on one say they'll ask why...and start looking into the issue..which is what should happen.
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Hells yes!
I'l probably go to costco that day too and buy 3 months worth of food.
... in protest of unspecific protests complaining about everything and offering the solution to nothing. - stealth45, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17I am in no way implying that 75,000 deaths is insignificant.
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Look how much media attention we give to people killed in bridge and mine collapses, even though the numbers are miniscule compared to Iraq casualties. The human mind just can't comprehend such enormous loss of life. Just sit and think for a while about 70,000 people missing from the earth, and all their loved ones left behind.
- electricessence, on 10/10/2007, -14/+27I'm so tired. So tired of feeling like anything we do doesn't help.
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21I was ready to strike up until i read "and the 9/11 coverup" then i realised it's just a crackpot truther scam to get more people to beat off over lose change or whatever they're trying to accomplish.
- notque, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19There are different numbers. No matter, they are human lives. How many is too many? We need action.
- bluekangaroo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12better Yank than jerk
- Toshibi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I'm looking for a job, this is the motivation I need to actually look harder. I hope lots of people just don't show up for work, so my job search gets easier. I don't trust my government, I don't like it's policies, but we poor folk gotsta make the cash (you know, food, shelter, heat and air, splurging on internet access, the ***** that really matters.)
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12That's the problem with a general strike. People hijack it. Umbriago apparently thinks it's a way to rebel against the capitalist economic system. Many people will view it as an anti-war protest. Some will see it as a rejection of the government's story of what happened on 9/11. Some will see it as a vote of no-confidence in the Bush administration. Some will see it as a vote of no-confidence in Congress. Some will see it as...
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16They better get a website with a higher traffic capacity or this isn't going to get very far.
- mbelleghem, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Thinking out loud here, but perhaps what you see as a 'digg-down squad' is nothing more than people who think the criticism (at least as expressed in the posts in here) is unwarranted? I certainly don't consider myself a part of any digg-down squad, but I've no shame in admitting I've been giving comments like yours the downwards bonk. Paranoia for the win?
- MrObjectional, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15That's the American way!
- notque, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14No, There is a website now. Before it was linked to a posting about it.
- PolishNInja, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1409/11/07 - The time grandpa played golf on a Tuesday.
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13It accomplishes publicity and solidarity sending a real message to congress that there is real desire from the people to change.
