- graeh, on 09/25/2008, -2/+30The key to creationists, is their misrepresentation of evolution to their "flock".
The evolution related books they produce are incredibly unethically deliberately erroneous.
And frequently, aimed at small children.
Remember, it's ok to lie to small children in the name of god.
It's what they did to me - what I was taught about evolution was a lie, and I was given awesome books like "It Couldn't Just Happen" (look it up on wikipedia, and amazon) which indocrinated me further about the nature of evolution and science.
I used to say "it's only a theory" - because I was taught that theories are best guesses which are unsupported - that the vernacular meaning of theory applied to the scientific use of the term theory. Awesome. They just pumped me full of lies and sent me off to fight the good fight against the evil evolutionists, who were most likely guided by the real actual satan.
Hell - I used to take people to task, as a teenager, who dared say the world was older than 6,000 years. I was raised to believe that all science which contradicted the literal word of god was entirely wrong, conspiratorial, evil, and stupid.
Don't let anyone kid you, or undersell what fundamentalists do to their children in the name of god. They lie, they cheat, they act entirely unchristian because the ends justify the means.
If you're subjected to that - and you're lucky enough to get out of it later in life, you spend your adulthood embarassed by what crap you spewed at people, the more you learn about what science and evolution really are, the more you cringe at the stupid things you said debating it.
True story. - Dimensio, on 09/25/2008, -1/+25"'The overthrow of modern science' That's a bit dramatic don't you think? "
It is exactly what many "intelligent design" proponents advocate: a redefinition of the fundamental meaning of the word "science". Rather than demonstrate that their claims have scientific merit, they seek to redefine science so that the newly defined term will accommodate their claims. - pplant, on 09/25/2008, -1/+21This is a thorough examination from an author with a intimate knowledge of Evolution. Well done Sir and thank you.
I have always felt that science, at its heart, is about calling '*****' on people. After some examination some stuff turns out NOT to be *****. Then its on to the next round of ***** calling, this round builds on the last.
What some people never get is that they are trying to call ***** on ideas that someone already called ***** in the year 1870.
It didn't work then and it wont work now. Maybe its not just more science we should be teaching but better history. - MariusAgricola, on 09/25/2008, -1/+15Uh, Amen brother? /embarrassed
I know exactly what you're talking about, as I was raised in a nearly identical manner (pentecostal, et al). However, I have been a skeptic since an early age, and I was eventually able to overcome the limitations of my upbringing. When I look back at the kinds of things I was taught to say to other people, I am embarrassed as well that I ever uttered a word of it. - Dimensio, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11"Thats what evolutionists do, they claim they are right without any proof of evolution happening."
Please substantiate this assertion.
" All there is is fully formed species and no intermediaries, in fact fully forms species should be incredibly rare becuase the process of becoming a species is infinitesimally small compared to the getting there. "
Your statement is nonsensical. There exists no biological concept of an organism that is not a "fully formed species". All organisms are a member of a species. I do not believe that you possess an understanding of biology.
"And if you claim its done by macro evolution pure jengablocks falling into perfect place trillions of times over and over again you dont know a damn thing about science son because thats a complete impossibility."
Please substantiate your assertion of impossibility.
" Now take your religious bantering somwhere else you hypocritical uneducated evolutionist drone."
I have not addressed the subject of religion. Either you have not understood my statement, or you are lying. - ferrisnox, on 09/25/2008, -1/+11Look anyone who has seen fossils of dinosaurs, seen the grand canyon, seen the physics of the big bang.... wait .... we all know the earth is 3000 years old. So there is no sense in having this debate, the bible tells us that and every word of the bible is true because it says it so.
People need to wake the hell up... look as little as 100 years ago people were having seances with the dead and producing ectoplasm from cheese cloth.... lets face people were easily duped into really stupid ideas back when we did not have the ability to rationally investigate and explain much of our world. Fast forward to now, when science helps us understand things so that we know we won't fall of the face of the earth if we sail to far out... We need to let go of most of this baggage of the old world, its bs until proven otherwise. - ApokalypseNow, on 09/29/2008, -0/+9"Thats what evolutionists do, they claim they are right without any proof of evolution happening."
The only science in which there exists "proof" is mathematics. All others are evidence based. In that vein, here's some observed instances of evolution happening - Cit+ E. Coli, nylon-eating bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, new cold and flu bugs every year, countless college-level fruit-fly experiments, etc.
We also have much evidence for it in the fossil record, including the perfect and continuous day-by-day and year-by-year fossil record of the phylum Foraminifera, encompassing ~275,000 known species, going back to the mid-Jurassic.

"And if you claim its done by macro evolution..."
The micro/macro model of evolution was thrown out in the 1930's, as it was not supported by evidence - it attempted to make a distinction where none exists. If you do not wish to accept objective reality and the science that explains it, at least try to bring up a model from the last 50 years or so to ignore - you'll look slightly less retarded that way.

The population of states explored by a system of DNA are not governed by random chance, but by strong nuclear forces and the electromagnetic force. Learn some statistical thermodynamics before you talk about the subject. - GlassAgate, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5"God has no place within these walls (school walls) just as
