- n1eb, on 07/30/2008, -5/+44I have a pair, they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. For decades we've been sold poor quality rubber shoes made in third world countries. They're inexpensive, they don't last, and we can't remember a time where we didn't have this junk available to purchase. Go back 50 years and people realized that shoes were an investment. They were handcrafted by experienced cordwainers using high quality materials, and they were expensive. People didn't have ten pairs of shoes, they had one or two, and they took good care of them. When the leather soles wore out, you'd get them fixed.
Salvatore Ferragamo, like many other Italian shoe manufacturers holds to this tradition. All of their shoes are made by hand. I don't think that $500 is unreasonable for a pair of shoes that are top quality, comfortable, and will last. To criticize a 71 year-old man man for having good taste in shoes shows a lack of intellect, but then again, I don't expect any different from The Huffington Post. If you have a problem with the man, debate him on the issues.
For those of you who are still with me, here's the first of a series of videos on shoemaking. If you watch them all, you'll have a new respect for what it takes to make a shoe by hand.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=6LsE4nsEOJk - kinseyincanada, on 07/30/2008, -13/+48are you ***** kidding me, they are actually criticizing this mans shoes? This is absolutely pathetic, and people complain about Fox news criticizing Obama with Terrorist fist bumps, and radical Muslim *****. This is no different.
- Ymeg, on 07/30/2008, -11/+35Oh jesus ***** christ on a pogo stick.
Does it really matter what shoes he likes?
This is ***** lame. - Weekapaugr00ve, on 07/31/2008, -5/+23WTF an article on McCain's shoes made it to the front page!? Digg is going down hill lately.
- poprocksandsoda, on 07/31/2008, -5/+23God forbid someone who makes money spend it how they see fit.
- LastVisibleDog, on 07/30/2008, -17/+34More ***** from the propagandist at HuffingtonSpinJob
- andyliu52, on 07/30/2008, -10/+26this article is so dumb, isabel wilkinson (author of the article) is a princeton graduate who majored in art and archaeology, and is now going to columbia grad school...
not gonna lie, a degree in art and archaeology is far more of a luxury than a pair of $500 shoes... princeton is about 50k a year, so that degree prob cost her about 200k - Insightful, on 07/30/2008, -11/+25Only in the Republican 'we are winning in Iraq.. in 2003.. in 2004.. in 2005... in 2008' world, can a billionaire Presidential candidate and millionaire pundits (Rush, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc) and call two people from middle-class families who went on to Ivy Leagues schools had successful careers and then gave back to their community elitists.
Kevin Rose, since you build Digg from ground up and will likely sell it for millions, you must be an elitist too! - boorishamerican, on 07/31/2008, -3/+16The man has good taste!
- Suzilla, on 07/31/2008, -0/+10Oh, yeah, THIS will be the "scandal" that sinks the McCain campaign.
Shoes.
Gimme a break. - algaeturd, on 07/31/2008, -1/+11Amen. There's a reason why republicans are either FILTHY RICH or DIRT POOR. They're always one or the other. It's no mystery as to why. One sect controls the corporate world and watches out for their interests and their interests only. The other doesn't have enough sense or education to realize that the neo-republican way of life is detrimental to the American ideals.
Our country is in a downward spiral of epic proportions right now...historic proportions and republicans are just shouting 'further down! further down! we still have some money and pride left to lose!"
I've never figured out how some of these appalachian regions...people who have barely any shot of getting out of poverty, and they VEHEMENTLY support these candidates who buy $600 shoes, don't know what it's like to work a single hard day's work or know what it's like to struggle. They find these republican rich blue bloods and support them to their back tooth.
Meanwhile, these people are doing everything possible to keep them in poverty.
It's not even funny anymore. It's offensive to me that uneducated people are that easy to take advantage of and allow it to happen. - SheilaNoya, on 07/30/2008, -11/+20It doesn't matter how expensive his shoes are. He's already stepped in a big pile of hot, steaming 'George W. Bush' and he'll never be able to wipe off the foul smell.
- ObamaWins08, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10No doubt if he wore a $20 pair of Wal-mart shoes this article would be about his obvious dedication to sweatshops.
SHUT UP ABOUT THIS CRAP ALREADY.
I want to hear election news, not this crap! - MooseTaag, on 07/31/2008, -6/+15***** christ, you anti-McCain people are desperate.
- diadelsuerte, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10This could be the dumbest thing I have ever seen.
- hatrabbit, on 07/30/2008, -8/+16Well, there's one of the perks of being a 'kept man'.
- zenithmbr, on 07/31/2008, -3/+11this is retarded, who cares?
- Praelior, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8I like how diggers constantly claim to be on top off all of the issues and very politically astute... and then an article like this reaches the front page.
Cmon guys, can we start digging stories that:
A. Come from legitimate news sources
B. Actually talk about the issues/stances of either candidate?
This just screams childish namecalling. - penguinsix, on 07/31/2008, -3/+11And what, Obama wears K-mart blue light specials?
- dotbacher, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7Looks like the Huffington Post is getting desperate. Shoes? Please. If I kept a schedule like his, I'd buy the most comfortable shoes money has to buy. Get over it.
- Regbooker, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7Because the Argentinian leather shoes Obama was wearing during his speech at Germany were extremely cheap.
/s - Tryptomine, on 07/31/2008, -1/+8Come on, shoes? Really?
The man is a walking disaster and you're focusing on his shoes?
There are better issues to be concerned with at the moment. - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -5/+12So being successful makes you elitist? Obama isn't wearing suits from mens wearhouse I can guarantee you that.
I can't tell if you morons are jealous of his wealth or just so ignorant that you will never break out of your ***** lives of poverty. Maybe if you got off digg, things would change. - TheEgghead, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7But you've probably never actually tried wearing Ferragamo shoes, so you don't really know do you? $600 is not really much to spend on a pair of shoes. They're probably going to last for at least 3 years and they look and fit so much better than your $80 Kenneth Coles or whatever it is you people buy from the sales rack at Nordstrom's
- WSPanic201, on 07/31/2008, -2/+9I agree this ***** is stupid
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -2/+8IF any of you had a real career, you'd realize that 521 dollars is not the expensive. Sure its pricey but, look at the price of Bruno's anywhere.
Also, go back to you shoe closet, little girl. - Shadow57, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6So Obama is giving speeches in Europe like he's already won, and you're worried about what kind of shoes McCain wears? Liberals scraping the bottom of he ***** barrel already?
- Kruez, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6Please don't digg this. This is the kind of retarded ***** we complain CNN and the rest of the major media focus on too much. The man has money, so he'll wear nice things.
Doesn't change the fact he's an *****. Let's focus on that! - pintomp3, on 07/31/2008, -6/+11kinda like an expensive haircut is an issue?
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5As a democrat, I don't get it and I think its very rude to attack someone just because a guy who's going to be spending more time walking around and standing in the comming months. 500$ on a pair of comfy shoes? give me a break. Seriously, I see poor ass mofos spend 200-300 on sneakers! Personally I don't often spend more than 50$ (I wear size16, if it fits and is under 50$, I buy it, even if its not that comfy) but I can totally see people spend 500$ on good shoes. So shame on you!!!
Let me know when he starts wearing loafers made from gophers, grizzly bear underwear or vests made from real gorilla chest. Mmmm'kay? - b4cheung, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Calm the ***** down. Elitist? They're a damn pair of shoes.
- Phillyzero, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5This is sad that people are digging this story...not only because it's from the huffingtonpost (democrat equivalent of FOX) but it's focusing on his shoes...come on...
- Nereus90, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Don't get me wrong, I consider myself fairly liberal, but I'm getting sick of the Huffington Post's biased bullcrap that they spew out every day.
- algaeturd, on 07/30/2008, -1/+5two words: Uneducated. You.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Why does it matter what shoes he wears? If he's rich lrt him spend the money they way wants.
- Theod48, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4you know the huffington post will sink to any level. "John Mccain has expensive shoes how dare he make money!!!!"
- Laterali, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Just lately?
- Gosunkugi, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4I thought the Republicans going after John Edwards' haircut was just as imbecilic as this is. There are more important things to be concerned about than "OH MY GOD THEY BUY EXPENSIVE THINGS," especially when it's in regards to clothing or hair care.
- Exotria, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4I was under the impression that this campaign was taking place in America, where people could buy things if they had enough money. If you want a luxury and you can afford it, why wouldn't you? I mean, I don't like McCain, but this is on par with the flag lapel pin outrage.
- carinishead, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Who the ***** cares about his shoes? I mean honestly? I don't support the guy but could the media please focus on issues for once and not this *****?
Take this for example, the man is worth millions and has a $500 pair of shoes. I'm worth -$160,000 (student loans) and I own a $200 pair of shoes. People can choose to spend their money however the hell they want. Quit pulling out this "elitist" bs. - motivatedmama, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Prisoner of a Red state here, brother. One with the lowest marks in education in the country, go figure.
I concur whole heartedly. - sovereign3, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Frankly, this scores McCain points my book. He shows great taste in fashion and those are a fine-looking shoe. Who cares how much they cost?
- blinktude, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4As much as I would not want McCain to win, bring him down with expensive is just low
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3HuffPo what do expect? It's been shown that 43% of the stuff they post is either fake, or has information left out intentionally.
- Dunq, on 07/30/2008, -15/+18this man deserves to lose the election.
- richirwin, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4All of this talk of elitism reminds me of what David Brooks, right-wing journalist, had to say about Obama.
"Obama's problem is he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can go into an Applebee's salad bar and people think he fits in naturally there."
Now I'm not calling David Brooks an elitist, but considering that Applebee's doesn't HAVE salad bars, I kind of doubt that David Brooks knows what he's talking about.
But, then again, he IS a right-wing journalist and not knowing what you're talking about kind of comes with the territory. In that regard, David Brooks is one hell of a right-wing journalist. - hdhock3y, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Is this for real? Who gives a ***** about either candidates shoes? Buried.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2What is this, Obama headquarters ffs?
- Barbarino, on 07/31/2008, -1/+3Can I filter out huffpo articles?
