The articles I have seen describe a group of only 200 people that were violent, yet the Police reacted as if the whole city were going up in flames.

The police force was issued 300 new tasers, and the DNC had built a "freedom cage" for the protesters. Not to mention, that the reaction of the police towards journalists, medics, legal observers, protesters, kids, and elderly people in the vicinity is entirely uncalled for, and is absolutely an abuse of arbitrary authority. The democracy now! producer had his head slammed on the ground, an Indy Media journalist was tasered today, and police have been informing protesters that it is now "illegal" for them to carry signs with sticks attached to them (as in, any and most protest signs). They have ordered journalists away from all areas of protest, or where the police are operating, lest they be subject to arrest.
Because of the actions of a few, that has taken place after preparation for police operations at the RNC, ALL of the protesters are being blamed, harassed, arrested, and assaulted. Not that it matters, the facts still stand, which is that they were heavily funded, trained, and supplied with new materials in order to carry out these operations. After training long and hard for this, just like any powerful authority, they're going to exercise what they've learned and been issued.
