"Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin summon antidemocratic images of a communist state to attack Democrat Barack Obama's tax plan and his comment about spreading the wealth around. But in her home state, Palin embraces Alaska's own version of doing just that."
This is from AP?
I'm about to have a heart attack!! AP?
Did they suddenly have a fit of conscience?! - MercyPolitics, on 10/31/2008, -23/+139Of course she is not a Socialist, the right word for her would be more.....National Socialist.
- nolive1999, on 10/31/2008, -21/+113Palin has taken the low road in her efforts to win. She is but a shell of a person. She is a sad example for her children.
- thelif, on 10/31/2008, -5/+45If Obama is just letting Bush's tax cuts lapse and return to Clinton's tax rates, how come no one calls Clinton a socialist?
- shadowman99, on 10/31/2008, -5/+42Yesterday I voted early in Omaha Nebraska. At the Douglas County Election Commissioner's office there were ~150 people in line extending around the parking lot. By the time I reached the front door there were another ~150 people behind me in line. When I finally saw inside the front door of the office there were roughly 100 people inside waiting for ballots, voting, getting ballots certified, and placing the ballots in a strongbox.
I was told by one of the staffers that 36,000 people had gone though the office already since early voting had begun.
Now image how much busier Tuesday will be next week. This was Omaha Nebraska.
How long will the lines be in a larger city?
How long will the lines be in your city?
I would urge people to vote early in this election. Don't take the chance of not getting to vote because your line was too long and the polls closed..
Take an hour or two and vote today. - rvandy, on 10/31/2008, -11/+45The problem is her blatant hypocrisy....accusing Obama of something she is proud to have occurring in the state she governs.

Obama/Biden 08 - kmoed, on 10/31/2008, -7/+31MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN
To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.
(You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.)
Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas , which she does not fancy).
Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.
Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.
To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
-----------------------
1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels.&nbs p; (look up 'vocabulary').
------------------------
2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S.< /SPAN> English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'
-------------------
3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.
-----------------
4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you 're not ready to shoot grouse.
----------------------
5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
----------------------
6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.
--------------------
7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.
-------------------
8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.
-------------------
9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nati on on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.
---------------------
10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.
---------------------
11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).
---------------------
12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America . Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.
--------------------
13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.
-----------------
14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).
---------------
15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season. - Gerz1219, on 10/31/2008, -1/+22A progressive tax policy has been in place for almost a hundred years, yet that doesn't stop Republicans from calling Obama a socialist.
And anyway, the issue here isn't whether or not Alaska's redistribution of oil wealth is a good policy or not. I like the idea. The problem is Palin's hypocrisy in supporting one form of statist intervention in the economy, while scaring low information voters into thinking Obama wants to steal their house and put them in the gulag. - debwilldo, on 10/31/2008, -35/+54This lying FRAUD is working my last nerve! Nothing that comes out of her shrill racist mouth is ANYTHING but a PACK OF LIES!!
PALIN:Take your garbage back to Alaska along with your scary husband, and try to raise the remaining children in your home decently, Just leave us the hell alone! - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -17/+36Rights to natural resource development is already owned by the government and, therrefore, property that is socially owned my those people who hold that government accountable - the members of the constituancy of that government.
Capitalism is when the owners of capital are the ones who benefit from its sale. Socialism is when privately owned property is taken by the government in an effort to take the benefits of capital in order for it to be redistributed those who have no ownership rights to it. There is a very clear and important difference and implying that these two cases are analagous is to misunderstand the difference between private goods and common goods. - UselessTrivia, on 10/31/2008, -2/+21Bill Kristol was on The Daily Show last night...and when Stewart brought up the socialist aspect of Palin's state paying residents to live there Kristol said "That's not socialism, that's just good conservative economics." Stewart's head looked like it was going to explode.
That interview was hilarious though because Kristol made it completely clear that even he wasn't buying his own ***** anymore. - built2spill, on 10/31/2008, -1/+19I see what you did there.
- Omaplatypus, on 10/31/2008, -4/+22she's so mavericky
- Clerg, on 10/31/2008, -4/+22Alaska is a Welfare State funded by oil and gas revenues put into the Alaska Permanent Fund. This helps to ease the high cost of living in Alaska since pretty much everything they consume has to be shipped in to the state. There is also a lot of poverty and unemployment in the state as there are few jobs, and a whole lot of wilderness up there.
So they are redistributing the profits of the oil & gas companies to subsidize the low standard of living for their residents. If it weren't for this program they would have a much harder time getting people to live & work there. Please tell me what other state has this kind of socialist program? As Governor, Sarah Palin is the head honcho of this "spread the wealth" program. Yeah, she can bad mouth taxes because Alaska enjoys a source of revenue that no other state in the union has the luxury of... Alaska also requests federal subsidies and earmarks at 10 times the national average for states.
If she is so against this type of wealth redistribution lets see her cancel the Alaska Permanent Fund and watch how fast the people of Alaska throw her ass out of office. Her entire political discourse is just so much bullsh!t. - davdev, on 10/31/2008, -1/+19Then is McCain giving a $5000 credit to buy healthcare, even for those who pay no taxes, also a Socialist? Where do you think that $5000 is going to come from?
- mgraham80, on 10/31/2008, -7/+24Don't socialists want to nationalize industries, i.e. state-owned oil? It's a socialist policy. Progressive income taxation is also slightly socialist, but so what? McCain isn't proposing the elimination of progressive income taxation, is he?

No. I'm saying that as long as she's presiding over the biggest socialist state in the nation she should stop calling her opponent a socialist.
I swear THE best way to know what a Republican is doing is to listen to them talk about what they aren't doing, or what they are accusing their opponent of doing. 9 times out of 10 that is what they ARE doing. - HappyScrappy, on 10/31/2008, -1/+16Resources aren't money, they have to be turned into money. This was done by companies, which Palin raised taxes on (see article above) and returned the money to every, regardless of income. That is, people were given money equally, instead of on some merit-based system.
That's socialism. And it's raising taxes. Two things the Repubs like to pretend they don't do so they can smear Obama over it. - blackcloud333, on 10/31/2008, -3/+17Nah, I think a lot of people associate the GOP with fascism rather than socialism.
- lornefs, on 10/31/2008, -5/+18Why is everyone so afraid of a little socialism?
That's why we congregate into SOCIETIES, to take care of one another.
It's evolutionarily speaking a herd mentality.
All societies are by definition socialist but a little greed thrown in isn't bad either because it fosters competition.
On the other hand, one person making billions of dollars just because he guessed correctly how to gamble with other peoples money is ridiculous but I digress.. - mgraham80, on 10/31/2008, -8/+21The irony is that a lot of her popularity in Alaska is based on her "redistributionist" policies, i.e. taking from the rich oil companies and giving to ALL alaskans.
But her high oil-welfare payments depended on high crude oil prices, and the plummeting price of oil must have her spooked, just like it has the other petro-dictators such as Chavez and Achmananananajed spooked. - pintomp3, on 10/31/2008, -2/+15i don't disagree with what alaska is doing. the resources belong to the public, so the public should benefit from those resources. the problem is the hypocrisy. if she were truly anti-socialist, she would privatize all of the land and stop giving out checks to the citizens of alaska. let's not forget that alaska gets more federal dollars than it pays in. everything about the state is socialist.
- UselessTrivia, on 10/31/2008, -3/+16No...it really is socialism. Alaska has decided that it is the people who own the resources...not the oil companies developing that resource. They charge (via taxes) those companies for the right to tap that resource, and then give profits back to the people.
That's nationalizing (or would it be "staterizing" on the state level?) a resource, which is a socialist concept. It's actually a far closer to the true definition of national socialism than Obama's tax cuts. - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -1/+14Facts have a well-known liberal bias.
- phroztbyt3, on 10/31/2008, -8/+21actually... the right word is IDIOT.... plain and simple... frankly the national socialist party has many smarter people than her... so to compare her to one of them is like comparing a pet rock to a dolphin (one has a brain).
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -5/+17"Don't socialists want to nationalize industries, i.e. state-owned oil? It's a socialist policy. Progressive income taxation is also slightly socialist, but so what? McCain isn't proposing the elimination of progressive income taxation, is he?"
Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism
The big part of Socialism is the "egalitarian society" where everyoen is equal and the same.
The people of Alaska own the oil, former administratiosn gave the oil companies sweetheart deals based upon very low revenue per barrel of oil. When oil hit $140, the poeple were basically deprived of the revenue and profit fromt ehir oil. Palin gave the illicit oil company gains back to the people.
It is a shame that peopel do not understand basic forms of government because without an understanding of such, people are likely to be suckered into subservience.. - FasterGun, on 10/31/2008, -5/+16It's getting harder and harder to ignore the widespread hypocrisy embraced by the current Republican party.
- theutopian, on 10/31/2008, -1/+12There's something wrong with your assumption: Alaskans DON'T pay any taxes. No income or state sales tax.
- thelif, on 10/31/2008, -2/+13First, if he lets the Bush tax cuts expire, we return to the tax rates under Clinton. Is Clinton a crazy socialist too? Secondly, let's rephrase your final statements, Palin took money made by hard working Americans and businesses who worked hard to get where they are at and give it to the poor Alaskans. The oil companies certainly did not benefit from this, and no way in a million years is it a voluntary action.
- ozel01, on 10/31/2008, -12/+23The Alaksa Constitution as written when Alaska became a state, declared the natural resources of the state the property of the state's residents. For that reason, every natural resource extracted has a royalty attached to it., The royalties have been in place for many years, way before Palin came to power. That decision was made by early Alaska pioneers, not Palin. Buried for the non-story that it is.
- DerTeufel, on 10/31/2008, -6/+17Shame! Taking advantage of the hard work of those oil company workers!!
- jdefloris, on 10/31/2008, -4/+15Remember, socialism is a socio-political philosophy. The communists were a political party that adopted the socialist manifesto of Karl Marx.
Adopting aspects of socialist social and political thought does not make one a communist, to wit, the existence in Europe of Socialist parties and Communist parties in the same country, putting candidates up against one another regularly.
One does not have to take socialism as Marx envisioned it, but continue to develop the concepts for market-based economies. What is absurd is the capitalism and socialism do not have to be mutually exclusive, and they aren't in Europe. Your neighbor's tremendours wealth (well, you might not actually be his neighbor...) isn't yours, and he isn't interested in yours, either, but you should both have access to excellent health care and emergency rooms, just like you both call the same fire and police departments when you dial 911.
Time to parse out human and social needs for which the government has a responsibility -- and we have a responsiblity towards all our community members -- and market needs, like goods we purchase, largely by choice and where the profit motive has a place.
Help capitalism and socialism find their level in constructing a more perfect society. - eir574, on 10/31/2008, -0/+11" if she'd have not raised the taxes on big oil, she'd be lambasted for that too."
By some, sure. But, republicans in congress typically do not support windfall profits taxes on oil companies, and that policy seems to be popular with their constituents. - pintomp3, on 10/31/2008, -4/+15"owned by the state of Alaska" isn't that socialism?
- Cadicus, on 10/31/2008, -5/+16@103008
Actually.. The distribution of publicly owned profits to the public is the DEFINITION of socialism.
"Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society."
In the case of oil.. The state owns the means of production, and they distribute the profits. That IS Socialism. Most people don't know the definition well enough.. - Rotzooi, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11Palin has long given up trying to win this election. She is smelling real power now, and will from now on do everything she can to maneuver herself in top position for the 2012/16 elections.
- TimDigg, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11The right word is facist.....
"In short, what we have alive in the US is an updated and Americanized fascism. Why fascist? Because it is not leftist in the sense of egalitarian or redistributionist. It has no real beef with business. It doesn't sympathize with the downtrodden, labor, or the poor. It is for all the core institutions of bourgeois life in America: family, faith, and flag. But it sees the state as the central organizing principle of society, views public institutions as the most essential means by which all these institutions are protected and advanced, and adores the head of state as a godlike figure who knows better than anyone else what the country and world's needs, and has a special connection to the Creator that permits him to discern the best means to bring it about. " - Lew Rockwell - AbsurdParadox, on 10/31/2008, -5/+15It is truly amazing how ignorant most of these comments are.
